Maximus Extreme - Results/Info/Bios

Hey, Im going to get my hands on one of these on tuesday, and thought a thread about this mb could help, have noticed that some people allready got one, and more will i think :)

so please post some results and findings etc etc :)
will update with results on my own soon...

Bios 702 was removed from Download by ASUS. 802 and 901 are the latest with 901 being BETA. I know you can still down load the Bios 702 from the link you provided but from the Main web site it was removed because of problems!

now i see, you have mixed FORMULA up with the EXTREME edition.. :)

latest bios as of 26/11/07 is 802 which i have installed no really obvious benefit but is penryn ready as it allows for .5 multipliers,
500+fsb no problem on this board as with most p35 and x38, really fast board for crossfire paired with ddr3, i can run the pc15000 at 2000mhz plus on this board and pass memtest in windows on stock volts which is 1.9v on these patriots at 9 9 9 28 , still exploring the bios really , lot in here ,

if anyone knows of a new 901 beta bios

anybody whos thinking of replacing the thermal paste on the northbridge do it before you use the board as the paste used set like rock once used a bit

any other helpful info i'll post on here ,

personally can't take my e6850 any higher than it was on my p5w dh just over 4 gig so maybe cpu limit or some other bios setting i haven't figured out although i can run this board at the 8 multiplier over 500fsb stably

Aahhh! :D that was what ive been looking for the 8x500 and ddr2000 STABLE
my p5e3 cant handle 500fsb, tough my cpu CAN handle 4ghz 16h stable..but not on this board! looking forward to play with this, its goin to be my wolfdale board when it gets out :)

is it needed to change the paste on the nb?

if you check on pc probe the ram seems to get overvolted so 1.9volt set in bios shows 1.97volt in pc probe , i would change the paste as on my motherboard it was like this, half on half off and on the s/bridge and crosslinks itr had those crappy thermal pads if you were going to put replacement paste on the mofsets use artic ceramic instead of artic silver 5 as its a non conductor, i am using the watercooled fusion block as well , seems a good motherboard to me always resumed from over ambitios overclocks, mines still a bit flakey yet still playing about with settings, theres so many

I've had mine for a few days. Early observations:

According to PC Probe, FSB Termination voltage seems to overvolt -- watch out for that one.

403 has been the best overclocking bios for me so far.

450 fsb with 1:2 ratio runs great off the 266 strap, nice low latencies.

My first time taking a quad core (q6600) to 500 fsb. :D

Also interested in this, currently have an E6850 maxed at 3.915 on a P5B Deluxe. Expecting my Maximus Extreme any day now, not sure weather to fork out for a Q6600, or maybe stick with E6850 and wait for 45nm? Also looking at that Cellshock Memory, seems to be getting good reviews!!

i'd stick with the 6850 for now the new cheaper 45nm quads are out in roughly a month

Im picking it up today at the postal office..
hope that i will mount it today and get it ready :)

I know i can do 4ghz stable atleast on any board..
and 4.2 in 3dmark benches etc..
will post some results later.. :)

And yeah, the cellshocks are great!! its board limited so far... but 2000+ is no problem for the mem itself!
couse i have crash in windows at 2000+ its probably the NB that cant handle it.. couse it is error free in memtest :)

EDIT: you above said, that the temp showed, MB and NB, i thought that MB temp was the NB temp? so what are the MB temp then if not NB..?

new 803 bios just posted on asus go to the ftp link in my post higher up to get it

803 bios is the best bios so far , load line calibration works perfectly , seems perfectly stable at 4090 and booted in at that thats at 1.5875 set in bios shows 1.58 in pc probe and 1.576 in cpuz i watched it while doing 1meg super pi and it stayed at that no vdroop

my 12v were about 11.59 before hehe...now 12.15 stable :P

anyway, What is the MB temp , where does it measure that?

now in with new bios and OC!

glad to see your in the maximus club the 803 bios is a lot better than previous , just superpi'd at over4.2ghz at 1.6volt , with the other bioses i needed around 1.65 volt just to be stable over 4ghz so whatever asus has done has done the job, if you get an error with pc probe after a crash just reinstalling it solves it, loadline calibrator works rock solid shows slightly lower values than reported in bios but rock solid and never moves, not a lot more time tonight to play about with it but seems a winner to me

i think the motherboard temp is the pwm measurement

FSB Term overvolting issue I had before seemed to be a function of early bios; with latest bios FSB Term drops around .04v for me from bios to actual, according to PC Probe.

Yes the loadline calibration is working very well now ... vdrop is maybe .01v at this setting, with another .01 vdroop under full load. So far very pleased with the board. :up:

hi,
i have a probleme with this board and corair dominator 1800 cl7
i have test every thing but i can´t run the ram on 1800.
450x6 ram1200 works perfekt
450x6 ram1800 don´t work
the problem is that memtest says 0 errors but 3dmark and prime hangs on at 5-10sec.
i have test bios versions 701,702,802,803 and nothing works.
i have test default settings and i have the same problems.
is the board bad or the ram? or are you thinking that the cpu are bad?

what speed are you running 3dmark at and what processor , i have the patriot pc15000 and can bench 3dmark01 at 2012mhz , the board tends to overvolt the ram according to pc probe i get errors on memtest when i run the ram at 2.0v but at 1.94 volt no errors,what volts are you giving the ram 2.0volt ? so if you think its the ram at fault slightly lower the volts on ram and try it

i have set 1,94v(real 2v) because when i set it to 2v it becomes 2.06.

i become next week a q6600 pretested @ 4,05ghz (450x9) stabil.

all settings are the maximum that i have tested.

sbk 1,07 (real 1,075)

dimm 1,94 (real 2), i have test 2v(real 2,06) but the same problem.
dimm vtt auto.

cpu features all disabled.
temps from cpu mb gfx ... are ok!
cpu,mb,gfx,hdd are @ watercooling.

kowa, honestly I believe this is an issue with the Asus X38 boards. I had a P5E3 Deluxe with the same 1800 C7 Corsair ram. It would boot at 1333 but no higher, no matter what timings or voltages I used. I knew the ram was good because I had used it on a P5K3, so I traded the P5E3 board for a Maximus Extreme. The Corsair runs fine for me on this one, but I have seen at least 3-4 other reports around the web (besides mine and yours) of folks having boot issues with Corsair 1800 C7 + Asus X38.

How is hot PCIe chip? I am building rig with this mobo, but i want to use my watercool setup and i have only TWO chipset blocks ... ONE for NB, ONE for SB ... is it necessary to active cool that IDC chip?

Dont know how warm it is, couse there are no sensor for the crosslinx, that im guessing that you mean, but putting my hand on the BLue cover, it feels pretty warm.. NB keeps around 40ish MB, that may be the PWM, keeps lower than 40.. SB around 40 too.. and this with a fan blowing over the Sinks.

it gets pretty warm, even if it works the fuzion are the way :)

i need to know how hot is only PCIe chip, not with SB under blue heatsink ... but only way to test it is disassembling of cooling system and touch the IDT chip ... :mad:

big thanks. now i have my q6600.now i can run it @ 9x425 and the ram 1700mhz 7-7-7-20 1t prime stable. i test next weekend more. i report the results.
but with 1800 the board starts and windows too but not stable.
the bios version 803 is very very good.

I cant Downgrade the bios, Ezflash says its older than existing (ofcourse) but it should work anyway? been working all the time until this MB :)

You must have went to 0803 and want to go back to 0702.Just reflash with 0803 and interrupt the writing of the flash with the reset button.This board has crash free bios so put your disk in the dvd and a usb flash drive I a usb port with the bios you want it to write.Just rename it extreme.rom and you can go back.I have done it several times.

I have had this board for 3 weeks with a QX9650 and corsair 1800 C7DF on phase stable at 440x10 with the vcore on auto for some resone I cant raise it but I know it just a bios setting.

:confused: How much volts You guys give to the NB? I set it to"AUTO"and at 9x467 (RAM 934MHz at 7-6-5-15 / 2.144 volts) the board set 1.52. This was even not 1M stable......:mad: - so I tried 1.55 now and 1M & 2M is stable, but 4M did not complete. Seems the board needs hi voltage on the NB - maybe I should try 1.6?:shrug:

At 9x445 with the same RAM settings (RAM 2.000 volts) the board is 32M stable with only 1.44 volts on the NB. Makes me wonder......:confused:

Any ideas?

Camo, my board definitely needs to have the NB voltage cranked up when the fsb gets up to 450+. At 10x400 fsb (yorkfield processor) I'm good with NB at 1.4; at 450, NB needs to be 1.61.

:D Yep - have exactly the same, 1.61 to the NB for 9x467 SP32M stable.

DDR2 X38 on P5E only needed 1.43 to run this stable..............:confused:

Im having a HELL of a time with this board and the OCZ DDR3 PC3-12800 Platinum Dual Channel.

Running it with SS on CPU, Water on Nbrige and a E6850.
ALL the time when I change somthing in bios, it has boot problems.
I will have to start from scrats once more, if I cant make it run I will take some bios pictures just to make sure im not messing somthing up.

The IDT chip is not very warm to be honest, at least when it is not working to split the second PCIe 16x lane. I placed 4 Swiftech Memory coolers on it just to make sure: (that SB heatsink was taken from an old Asus P5B :D)

Using an infrared thermometer, it is at around 33 degrees, which is just 2 degrees higher then the motherboard PCB next to it.

While I was at it I discovered that the FETs for the Northbridge was really hot, so another memory ram sink was placed on the 4 FETs, which fits perfectly:

These sinks, when under load goes up to as high as 48 degrees, also measured using the infrared thermometer.

Another was placed on the Memory FETs, although they were not that hot anyway powering DDR3, with temp reading at 37 degrees under load.

These little heat sinks can be found on DFI boards that are factory fitted, but not from other manufactures.

I have tried 1gb OCZ plat 1333 and 1gb Corsair 1333, if i put in 2 sticks everything works fine, if i put in 4 sticks the board locks on vista boot, if i do a vista memory test everything is fine, but as soon as it tries to boot vista it locks up. I am thinking of going to 2x2gb and try that... FYI this is all at auto everything, no OC.

Eternal, Do you have a pic of the board from a bit further away. I'd like to see all the components. What cooling do you have on NB and on Mosfets now?

which ram slots everyone using i am on the white ones from installing and seems ok any ram slots preffered, don;t know where but i read somewhere the white slots are supposed to better but not sure

2x around here couldnt even install windows last night loading setup defaults on BIOS, had to set stock clocks for the cpu manually.

Now im having all kind of issues with it, bios 803.

CPU at 400x9 = windows boot but SP2M stable only if dram is under 1333MHz tryed 2 kits of DDR3 same issue.

8x400 also completely unstable if ram at 1600mhz

Can anyone put bios screenshots of a working set up please.

Also AiSuite doesnt even load give a error :(

:D You just found my thread - forget AI Suite yet..........

There are two important things in BIOS - do not set PLL voltage to AUTO, the BIOS will give 1.85 volts which is pretty much........, and the NB voltage - set it only to AUTO up to 450 FSB, BIOS will give 1.44 volt. But above 450 FSB the board needs 1.61 and BIOS will set only 1.55 which is pretty less...

All mentioned voltages are real shown in hardware monitor in BIOS, setting in BIOS may vary.

I have the heatpipes off and am about to take off the fusion block to reseat but thaT IS AN INTERESTING watercooling setup, man everything is watercooled, tht must cost a fortune>?

Can you help me to overclock my system
QX9650 + Maximus Extreme + 4 X 1GB Dominator DDR3 1800 + toughpower 1200 + wc system swiftech + D tek fuzion ...the system don t reach more than 4000 Mhz i don t know why...
P5E3 i reach 4500 Mhz to bench...and prime more than 4 Ghz

The Extreme are More NB voltage hungry even at a Dualcore..

And a Quad plus 4x1GB i think you will need some NB voltage, maybe you have tried that? Got to check atleast :) one tip if not..

Tried all slots? usally memory plays better if changed to secondary slots, the black ones.

EDIT, tired after work, didnt read good enough, you do have 4x1 hehe..

hiya infa what volts are you giving the ram, are you on watercolling whats the temps like with that vcore on the e6850

at that time i had 2.06 vDimm, vMCH 1.67, and 1.73** at cpu resulting in 1.72, and loadline is working great.

Temps now in vista with orthos, same vcore, couse i forgot to change it, and were doin orthos now at 4ghz, the temp got to 70c.

I got so much dust between the fans and radiator hehe, its Full of it, thinks its doin 5c atleast, the fans are barely pushing trough hehe..
but its a PITA to release all the screws, and then release moore screws to get the fan of the radiator, and i DONT WANT to tear the system apart so all the hozes are still there when im doin it, and its a pita :) but i think i really need to do it now tough..

Hehe, thanks for the timings of memset, they did work perfekt on my Cellshocks.. i almost had a 32m at 4250, but it BSOD me at nr 22 :angry:
werer at 10.33 on nr 22 looked good, well well ..to late to try again ..new day tomorrow :)

What is the BEST stability checking program for mem and CPU? I have been using everest, but does it truly test the memory and cpu? After runing a 1 hour stability test, the next day i had a total lock while installing Direct X.

Orthos, Prime, loop3dmark, Games ar a good measurement sometimes..

what is best bios for Maximus Extreme?
now i have 0803 and i think work fine
i have look voltage on bios and vNB, Vsb and vram is overvoltage
ram 1,84 on bios is 1,90 -1,91 real
vpll if i put 1,50 is 1,59 real

Yepp, Extreme tends to overvolt all settings, just have that in mind then its no worry... and 803 beta i think everyone can agree on are the best bios so far, wonder when the final will come, and what it will bring :)

Infa/camo I especially like the high bus speeds you're getting. At 9x450 it feels like I'm almost there with vcore 1.55, PLL 1.5, FSB Term 1.54 (big drop on that one according to PC Probe anyway), and NB 1.61 but Orthos errors at 6 minutes remaining. Interesting that my Yorkie seems to require so much more vcore to run at higher FSB (400 fsb is stable at stock vcore, 450 fsb requires 1.55 for same clock speed).

Also for me it is important for ram stability at higher clocks to keep dram static read and dynamic write on auto.

Can it be that the CPU-temp seems to appear higher than real ???
What I mean is :
I just changed the board ( this weekend ) - had a ASUS P5N32-E SLI ( nForce 680i ) before... now I realise that the CPU appears much higher than the core-temps ... I am used to it that it was in fact vice versa.

my problem with the difference between CPU- and core -temp is gone :)
the temps are like they should be.

just forgot to report :
oc like before ... just with little lower cpu-temps.

installed bios 904 all seems ok i will post back if i find any difference to 803 but seems ok

i've just checked it out and the 1002 is for blitz extreme not maximus so don't use it, its obviously been uploaded to wrong folder on asus ftp

When I logged on a few hours ago... there was another post concerning the question if sombody could load him 0803 cause ASUS took it off the server.
