CellShock DDR3-1800 8-7-6-21 Testing!

It's been a long time ( ? maybe for me to say :D ) since I've tested/presented a new DDR3 kit here.
Well, it's 'bout time I do that again :D

This is the very first test with the latest CellShock retail kit, the DDR3-1800 8-7-6-21 2GB Dual Channel Kit ( part # CS3222580 ) rated at 1.7V - 1.9V

I haven't done any "real" tests yet ( as I had to do some measurements for a high priority review ) but starting from today, I will be playing with them and some other DDR2 & DDR3 kits for the corresponding reviews & roundups.

Just did some tests with those sticks at DDR3-1800 6-5-5-18 1T and the Q6600 @ 3.6GHz ( 450MHz x8 ) to check a just volt-modded VGA.

SuperPi 1M & AquaMark 3 stable @ DDR3-1800 6-5-5-18 1T for a start :)

Time is not tweaked, pure run in a "normal" WinXP installation used for the VGA review already :p:

Asus P5K3 Deluxe ( not modded yes, so no explosion mode :p: )

They seem to do good at 7-6-5-18 as well :D

This weekend they'll be used for my benching with some CPUs and LN2, and in the next week I shall have everything ready for the review & finishing up the roundup after that :D

Ain't gonna lose a single Hz out of them :D

1M Score = 14s 343ms

I've captured it in video with my cellphone from BIOS to final SuperPi 1M result.
Gonna upload the video later on ( have to re-encode it, etc )

p.s.1. Everest v420 Memory Read score = 12003MB/s at the settings mentioned above.
p.s.2. Memory was stable for SuperPi 1M/2M ( not all runs of 2M ) and WinRAR Benchmark

Running 2,1 Volt on my pair of sticks on a 24/7 basis. Is this too high 24/7 or is it in your opinion possible to go higher without frying them?

It's still kinda early to say something 100% "safe" about the D9GTR ICs, but from the looks of it, the max safe 24/7 voltage should be 2.0V

Higher than 2.1V for 24/7 doesn't sound like a good idea.
I'm not saying that they'll definitely degrade or die, but it's not the best idea.

p.s. I hope you have the DIMMs cooled by a fan at anything over 1.85V

It's not handpicked neither a cherry-picked review sample, but from what he saw, he told me that it's a Blue Kit that accidentally got those black heatspreaders.

I am testing an Review-Kit too, but only a kit with black heatspreaders. Sadly my cpu doesn't run with a FSB of 500Mhz. So i can't test the 1000Mhz. Now they are running with 900Mhz @ 7-6-5-15 @ 1,92V.
In the next days i will test my retail kit.

When i try to use PL = 5 my system will freeze :( But i will test it in the enext days :)

I haven't played a lot ( had some issues again :( ) but the lowest Performance Level I've got was Performance Level 2 with 200MHz Strap, and low FSB although.
At higher frequencies like the tested ones I'm usually at PL6.
I haven't tried more than 1.75V yet on the MCH, had no time to play...gotta finish all these reviews that should already been done :(

Who should i believe? CPU-Z right? because if not those are some high volts for Memset MHz on RAM.

I'll upload some tests of a kit i have here that is pretty good i'm 100% sure im chipset limited, im at 1.81v only couse the NB goes crazy hot.

if your nb gets so hot then why dont you add another fan or change the nb heatsink? :P

Removing NB fan is taking SB fan also and i dont have a good replacement, plus i have to return the Maximus Extreme :(

I do have a fan on it but it's NB cooling is not so good

metro, on the maximus board?
yeah, the thermal compound there sucks... the heatsink is glued to the nb ihs with some strange thermal glue. one guy at oc team denmark dropped his board 5cm to the table and the waterblock heatsink just popped off :D

and some other people reported the waterblock popped off quite easily too and the thermal glue was spread very badly, so there was bad contact.

can you replace the thermal glue and put thermal paste?
If yes then do it, and you should look for a thick 40 or 50mm delta on ebay :D
they call them "screamers" for a reason but they are unbeatable when it comes to nb cooling :D

To achieve 956Mhz you have to get the cpu to 4.3Ghz, i hardly think his cpu are stable at that speed, the mem are surely stable, but not the cpu, so no Prime there i think... just wait until Wolfdale, then you will see 956+ stable of people/us :)

yep, I had run the sticks on 1000mhz, but only for a cpuz valid, benchmarks are so unstable :( i think its mobo limit (maybe the 1.70 vmch was low), but i didnt tryd yet with more vdimm...

yup, my P5K3-Dlx needed more vMCH for 1000MHz to be stable for single 32M at even 8-7-6. i still haven't been able to get any kits over 960MHz dual32M stable though. the Maximus Extreme has taken care of that though so i am confident it is a motherboard limit.

one quic question Achill3uS, when your listing your settings, are you listing the voltage set in the BIOS for vDIMM or measured with a DMM? TIA

well, this motherboard doesn't see 24/7, it is just used for benching and memory clocking. with that said, the last month has seen it running pretty much 24/7 running Prime, HCI Memtest, SPI, and looping 3DMark 01/06 for long term stability testing on memory kits.

i have had the vMCH at 1.71v~1.81v for most if not the entire time. at some points it has been up to 2.00v but for the long term stability it has stayed around the 1.71v~1.81v range. i am just using a Noctua NC-U6 for cooling with a 2300RPM 120mm fan over the memory blowing on the NB as well.

In an asus P5K3 board what BIOS setting refers to the term vMCH and what would it need to be (assuming the board is volt modded to adjust higher than BIOS normally allows) to get the best from the RAM?

The NorthBridge Voltage (Vnb) maverik-sg1.
1.70V ( max available with a non-modded P5K3 ) is ok for daily usage.
Up to 1.9V should be ok with efficient chipset cooling.

On the P5K3 I have northbridge modded so I can set for benching with 1.91v and a nice 80mm fan blowing on NB, and one on each of the MOSFETs sinks all should be well with benching for a few hours or more?

Might try and do something tomorow or monday on this :)

sorry robert... im still in my hometown up in the north and a couple of blue kits together with your blitz board are still in southern germany.
I didnt think you would need it... sorry... my plan was to go back to the south after new year, then pick up the hardware and head over to munich and fly to ces.

dropping PL and i can get away with 1.76v for single 32M at 500FSB 1000MHz 8-7-6 on 200 or 333 strap, 1.81v for 266 strap i think...can't find my notes from that testing right now.

hmmm interesting... so you needed more chipset voltage for tighter pl and not really higher memory clocks? but you DID notice that increasing vmch is necessary to get higher memory clocks or its making the same clocks with less vdimm possible and higher clocks with the same vdimm possible?

well, this motherboard doesn't see 24/7, it is just used for benching and memory clocking. with that said, the last month has seen it running pretty much 24/7 running Prime, HCI Memtest, SPI, and looping 3DMark 01/06 for long term stability testing on memory kits.

Blitz Extreme was for a long time my dream mobo, but some people told P5K3 Deluxe with mods is much better (no coldbugs, ect) ... I hope so :)

no, actually i dont used wolfdale in x38, but i dont think that mobos could handle much more than 600fsb...
btw i prefer asus mobos, and we could read a lot about the maximus problems on sub-zero... so waiting position for the rampage and the p45 as many others...

hehe, like everything with these last two motherboards, i am not 100% sure because i have been so crunched for time that i haven't had the chance to fully test all of those theories but i can say for sure that...

i could not get 1000MHz single 32M stable with the Ballistix before the vMCH mod. i worked with the board for about a week and could not make it happen. after the vMCH mod, single 32M 1000MHz was not a problem. i just can't remember 100% if that was all that was adjusted. my notes seem to reflect it was but i can't be certain. now, i also haven't tested that theory with more than one kit of ram because at the time i only had the one kit capable of 1000MHz single 32M...so it may have just been the Ballistix.

no problem and yes, the Noctua has been a beast from the day i got it. now that i have the Maximus Extreme, which has an accurate NB temp sensor, and the chipset seems to be sensitive to heat; i would like to get a mini-NB round-up going if i can. i have started working on the details but something tells me the Noctua will be right up there at the head of the class with the rest of them.

x38 is good for high fsb, but ROG boards for some reasons suck... i guess its caused they are tweaked for higher ipc?
and sorry to dissapoint you but even p5k3 boards have problems under cold temps :( not all... and sometimes it works... but not for long :/
ive seen thoseproblems with 2 boards myself and i heard from 2 other people having cold problems with the p5k3... :/

I shall be benching with the board & LN2 in a week or so...I'll give you pics of my insulation, etc if you want :)

you don't make me disappointed don't worry, everybody told me my blitz forumla has coldbug for sure, and it booted at -130C without problems, so i hope i will be lucky again :D (and this mobo is made in china, not the taiwan version)

the p5k3 i tried under ln2 was made in china as well... i dont think this has a big impact on whether it likes cold or not :/

well i dont like rog boards... they are way overpriced imo... :P
ive seen a roundup of p35 and x38 boards, i think it was on the hardware site of jmax. he tested the p5k3 vs blitz and p5e3 dlx vs maximus i think, so basically the normal asus board vs the rog asus board. and every rog board got around 50mhz lower fsb speeds than the normal asus boards.

let me see if i can find that article...

i've read about somewhere made in taiwan mobos are much worse on sub-zero...

yep, they are not cheap, but still what i've got of ROG (Commando, Blitz Formula) was my best mobo's, without any bugs like many others... maybe i was lucky, or just don't try such a lot of mobo's like you :D

that article could be interesting, but it's only one review, and i don't believe to normal testers, not real overclockers (and i don't talk about jmax)... the most favorited hw forum in hungary was made a review that foxconn mars is a crap board, worse than p5k deluxe... and they used around 450fsb walled cpu for testing the mobo's oc potential... i think you know what i'm talking about :rolleyes:

as you can see rog boards reached much lower fsb results in their reviews.
i dont know what straps and voltage options they used though...

Performance Level 6 for the DDR3-2020 7-7-6-21 tests, and Performance level 8 ( 7 proved to be stable as well ) for the DDR3-2056 8-7-6-21 tests.

damn lucky board you have there. your one of those cases where the chipset is about as good as its going to get. vMCH mod probably won't do a whole lot for you except add a little more stability at high FSB low PLs like 500/6. it will be interesting to see what it does for that board.

would like to see single 32M maxes and could you pretty please list BIOS set voltage for all your screen shots. one thing i like about the Maximus Xtreme, vDIMM gets picked up by Everest for ease of doing that.

i have a bunch of p5k3 deluxe boards and the best can do 985 stable more or less... but if you look at all the new boards with x38 and p35 they seem to hit 1000+ consistently...

when did you get that new p5k3 dlx bill?

the new p5e3 i got last month does 1000+ as well...

I'll give you any info ( NB steppings, etc ) tomorrow ( if it's viewable with bare eyes...need to pick up a new camera :D )
