t800's small, cased, daily cascade ;-) | WORKLOG

Hi

Some mounths ago t800 ask me about unit to use it daily. First we had thought about single-stage, we fast we have decided that performance won't be as good as t800 want and with big rotary compressor it'll be bit noisy :D ...so we decided to built small cascade, in metal case, using 2* 1/2 HP compressors . Goal is -60-70*C@200W .

Specs :

compressors: ASPERA NE2134GK 12ccm 1/2HP x2
evap: steeper evap 40 mm tall
XV: captube 0.8 mm/ captube 0.8 mm
HX: plate HX , 12 plates
condenser: 1.9kW + 230mm fan + 5W motor
refrigerants : R507/R23
oilseparator : HENRY S-5181
safety : RANCO cut-off with manual reset
case : metal case, 55 x 37 x 36 cm, silver paint
others: SLHX on 1st stage, small LCD HX's out temperature display, bitums sound insulation inside case, two 120 mm fans on the back of case + sunbeam CCFL red grills on them

Yes, why not ? :)

That's like 700-800watt/h of electricity added to the bill. Think about the environtment aswell, boys. You could run three pretty highend PC's with that much of power.

Small SS (1/5 to 1/3HP) for 24/7 is quite enough.

For You - yes, but not for all :D . Owner of this unit have already at home one cascade for benches, but now He want to have sth "lighter" :D for daily using, but -50*C is too warm for Him :) .

And that's it ..it'll be "light" cascade, using ordinary, not very strong compressors, and R23 gas :) .

Great looking unit piotres as allways, will be interesting to see how well this performs under 24/7 conditions, but get some sleeving or copex/spiral rap on them cables, i think that with the vibration of this unit the condenser could easy cut though the main power cables, at the best it will just short out but if the metal becomes live it could kill, so please protect the cables from damage and save life's

This is could probably be perfect for a high-clocking quad. Great build piotres, I'll be doing something similar for 24/7 use but with 1/10 HP compressors :)

I bet even after 20 years of it's work cables insulation near condensor will be looking just like new :D . Those hermetic compressors don't produce much vibrations, there aren't rotaries ;) . And insulation on high quality wires are thick and hard to damage :) .

Those cascade with that compressors doesn't eat much more power than one SS with 1HP rotary, maybe even same/less ;) .

Only -60-70*C@200W. It's owner's need :) . So I'll use R23 to make temperature warm, not R1150 ;) . With R1150 I bet exactly same setup like this can make sth like -90*C@200W, maybe even colder :) .
With R23 I bet I'll be only around -65-75*C@200W :) .

Nothing special, just 40mm tall steeper with 3 mm channels ;) . Yep, Cryostar is SUPERB :D .

I don't really think that's a trick. Look carefully at the 9th picture down.

It looks to me as though the oil return has just been brazed straight to the service port of the compressor with a tee.

Ron, isn't the bottom tube (oil return) just brazed onto the service port :confused: ? Or have I missed something?

Whats the trick? He brazed the oil output to the service port basically. Thats what we all do with a floated oil sep. Or am I missing something?

It looks to me like he brazed the oil return line into the oil sep outlet line. That's why I was asking for another picture. I know how to hook one of these up NOL. :shakes:

Runmc - like boys said - it's ordinary connection, oil back from Henry straight goes to 2nd stage compressor service port :) . Only trick is "mod" Henry's flare 1/2' oil back connection to brazed 1/4' :D . But I'll make picture of that specially for You on friday :) .

Ah Ron I think your a victim of an optical illusion. In that picture I think he had just brazed in a small peice of peice which he then coupled to a larger one in later time and pictures.

This is your call Piotres, i have a lot of respect for your work and the neatness of your builds,and what i am about to say involves everyone hear on this forum not just yourself,I am proberbly going to get slated for what i am about to say but as for safety i think that we all try and follow the codes of practice as far as we can when it comes to refrigeration but when it comes to electricity i do not see much care being taken if any at all in this field when it comes to wiring items up, there are electrical regulations which need to be followed and if you sell a unit and someone gets hurt you are liable for that injury and could face a large fine or jail sentence as you will be liable for prosecution if it is found that the wiring was at fault.

It is know good saying well the cables are high Quality so they should be OK as i only used hermetic compressors, what if the worst does happen?

For a few extra $ you could do a job professionally and correctly following the electrical regulations and giving a better job to the customer at the end of the day and safeguarding yourself if anything did go wrong.

But as i said it is your call, i have seen far to many people get hurt badly from electrocution when they thought it would be OK.

I go by a good old German saying, good is not good enough, live long by it or die with out it, is another one guy would say about safety regs.

From an industry I grew up in, there are old logers and bold logers, but there are no old, bold logers. In other words, it never payes to not take simple action to remove the possibility of a failure.

I see 4 inputs to the condenser. Can we see a flow chart? And I thought LukeXE's builds were pretty good?

Yes, because condensor is splitted for 2 parts, and smaller is desuperheater for 2nd stage :) .

nice work there piotres, r507/1150 will go very well in this cascade, this unit is very similar to my personal cascade also using 2x 1/2hp compressors even with a highly clocked QX6700 with 1.85vcore. Maybe get some heaters to help with 24/7 application.

Yes kayl, but that is planned to be working with R507/R23 as I've wrote some posts over ;) . R1150 isn't need, with ethylene, cascade rather will be too cold for owner ;) . For sure first I'll try R507/R410a, maybe later I'll put R507/R1150 just for test (if mine new ethylene portion arrive on time ;) ) . But that's not sure . Finally I plan R507/R23 :yepp: .

You could always use some of this mate (Spiral Cable Wrap), it is very cheep and easy to use and will do the job it is intended for.

Some fitting of case .... :) I must put some alu mesh inside holes for gauge, becasue first that had been planned 1.5 kW condensor,that 1.9 kW is just little too high and there aren't enought space for gauge .

With the oil seperators when the float opens and allows oil to return to the compressor, have you ever noticed benching or on a load tester that the temps at the CPU drop during this time?. I have read others have had troubles sometimes that temps just drop for no reason, and only thing we could think of was when the float opened and system under great load.
For this reason they made the suction return more restrictive from the oil separator, ie used a small amount of capillary line to return the oil. For this reason i have always just used few feet of capillary line for oil return from the oil separator, but never just piped it straight back with say 1/4" copper tubbing like you do.

Probably as long as the life of the fan(s) or the compressor before anything would need doing!

I'd say the fans would go first, then compressor so long as the assembly was handled with "clean room" conditions. Excellent build piotres if I haven't said it already :)

That's temperature of evap with R410a on 2nd stage. Loaded with 225W :yepp: . 1st stage loaded has been around -35*C :) .

Anyway, I had expected bith lower with R410a, I guess making sth like R507/R410a cascade is nonsense, becasue ordinary SS with compressor like used in that cascade can make around -35*C@225W with R507 :) .

To be sincere I'm after tests with R23, I had got problem with oilseparator and must change it, but that's longer story which I'm going to write about in some next days :) . Now all is OK again, and cascade is working very fine with R507/R23 :yepp: .

@t800 : sure, I have stickers :). Inside case is veery little space ..I think that can be hard to find space for sticker LOL, but I'll try to find it .

I must chaged Henry oilsep becasue it had been damaged - all the time is has been pouring some of gas directly to oilback line, so to compressor's suction port ..as a result I got +1 bara on gauge, very slow pull-down and no way to hold any load :( . So I've changed it for another Henry S-5181 which I got, that one works ok. I've mount this time it in bit another way - some 2 mm captube as a oilback (Kayl's advice :) ) + castel sightglass :D .

Maybe anybody know a way in which I can fix float in old Henry S-5181 ? If I'll use handvalve on oilback line will it be working ok ? :rolleyes:

Unloaded evaporator temperature with R23 :) (BTW. UEI is mine new, next thermometer :D ) . -35.4*C is end on plate HX temperature (outlet pipe, 1st stage) .

And here loaded with 225W dummyload :) .

Cascade is near ready to go, only I'll hold it in mine house for one (some) more week/s to check if it's sure leak free :yepp: .

PS. Ohh You can see part of surprise on that photos ;( ..nah, but I'll show You that on full picture bit later ;-) .

That small thermometer on front panel show 5*C too high temperature ...and it can't be tunned ...gah . :shakes:

have you tried to load it with bigger loads to se how it performs then? would be interesting to see temps with 350-450watt load

No Tim I've tried . I don't have so strong dummy .

I've found that mine 225W dummy is enought to simulate load from QX CPUs :) .
