Swapped over to 2x1GB Crucial Ballistix 8500 dual channel kit.

• It seems for my Q6600 B3 max FSB depends on how well memory modules can handle certain settings. Why ? Because my Q6600 B3 can hit 495-500FSB alot easier with this memory than other memory I've tested. Other memory hit max FSB around 490FSB.
• Also I might have found a possible strap change for Asus P5K Deluxe (maybe only noticeable with very very tight subtimings ? ) @500FSB. At 7x500FSB, memtest86+ v1.70 reported 6216MB/s bandwidth. At 7x499FSB, memtest86+ v1.70 reported 6505MB/s bandwidth!.

Nice find , just got one yesterday still playing with it

:eek: Man I am trying to sell my memory I have now so I can get some ballistics too. I cant get my Q6600 over 460x7 with current mem and cooling. Still this ATI branded stuff @4x1gig @931 is darn nice. I will reach 500 mghz FSB! LOL, Great work EVA! I just love this board, kinda hard to get used to after all the options on the icfx3200 tr/g but once i figured out everything its a marvel. Eva, I flashed to the latest bios but I still do not have the option for 1 or 2t command. ??? I think I will have to reflash . Maybe thats whats holding me back with fsb?

Since you've got all that memory laying around Eva, have you done testing with those Ballistix in 4x1GB configs?

what cooling are you using on this system?

i was trying to find the change point on Gigabyte P35 DQ6 and from 266FSB to 470FSB i haven`t found nothing,i stoped at 470FSB(goes unstable) cz that Gigabyte needs more ram tweaks and to continue the tests i need to re-run all those tests from zero :(

later.. i do some memtests on memory before even loading windows - but 4GB takes ages to do.. time better spent on 2GB configs especially when i only use 32bit winxp pro sp2.. not touching vista 64bit for at least another 6 months heh

i tried a test with 1:1 but i didnt notice any difference.
these were made with 1.4Vmch and identical settings.

On Asus P5K-series there are two strap changes:

At 293FSB the board changes FSEL strap to 1333FSB to make more memory dividers available. This doesn´t have any effect to performance.

The performance level is also changed for following dividers:

1:2 Performance level changes from level 2 to level 1 ;)
Level 1 is the tightest possible, so expect some huge bandwidth :D

Dividers 3:5 & 1:2 are FSEL strapped to 800FSB.

At 500FSB the performance level of all dividers are set more loose.

1:1 Performance level changes from level 6 to level 10.
Level 10 is the loosest one. Usually the chipset can handle level 5 just fine ;)

5:6 Performance level changes from level 5 to level 8.
Setting level 4 should not be a problem.

4:5 Performance level changes from level 4 to level 7.
Setting level 4 - 3 should be fine.

Since the memory frequency would get a bit high at bigger dividers I don´t have actual values for them. But I recon the values would be following:

2:3 Level 3 -> Level 6
5:8 Level 4 -> Level 7
3:5 Level 2 -> Level 5
1:2 Level 1 -> Level 4

I thought about "upgrading" my Commando to a Striker or P5N32E SLI Plus but no thanks. If I upgrade to anything it'll be the P5K Deluxe, but only after seeing what ASUS does with the BIOS.

Most of the time I see you dissables PECI under Advance CPU Settings but this time I noticed that you've changed it to enabled. What makes you need to change it this time??

I've an exactly same pair of RAM...well, I think they're the same, Ballistix Tracers 8500. At 2.2v and stock 533mhz, 5-5-5-15 and auto sub-timings, they're getting considerably hot already. I've active cooling on one side from one the front intake case fan at the top but I think I might add one more directly on top of the RAMs.

What sub-timings would you recommand to use on a daily basis (~2.2v and stock 533mhz speed)? I noticed you've 3-30-3-3-3 in your previous 600mhz+ configuration and now you've 2-25-2-2-2 in your current 500mhz configuration at only 2.15v. Do think 3-30-3-3-3 is the ideal sub-timing to use for me?

eva: I've noticed in your posts you are testing with only one SATA drive (Raptor 74) and that drive is on SATA port 2. Have you done any testing with a drive on port 1? Or better yet, with all ports populated?

I'm looking at three different boards ATM: P5K Dlx, P35-DQ6, and the IP35 Pro. I'm quite hesitant about the P5K because of the reported SATA issues. Have you discovered any SATA problems in your testing?

I have 4 SATA drives, though none are RAIDed.

@Eva2000, got the Ballistix in today, however, I tried your template and my system fails OC everytime. I've got a batch F4, not sure if that makes any difference.

PECI enabled = lower cpu temps on cpus that support PECI, disabled = higher temps... for everyday i like memory that does 3-30-3-3-8 which is just slightly faster than AUTO

I originally used SATA1 port but when i was testing 8800GTS it was cramped when SATA1 was used as i didn't use a right angle SATA cable so moved it over to SATA2 ... no diff between the two.. haven't tried all SATA in use as i'm running awfully low on spare hdds :(

Okay, little progress. Putting memory in black slots, able to POST and boot into Windows and doing Everest benchmark. For the past hour or so, it seems stable, but haven't done any stress test yet, so stability remains in question. Right now, it's at 7x499 and 1.4V vcore. Doing OCCT and temp is around 65 with the Ultra-120 Extreme. Seems high, but this is only for benching as I will never use my PC regularly at this OCed state.

Sorry for the Off Topic: I must have PECI on now after I updated to the 0404 bios because my temps are "WAY" down, I will enable it and check temps again.

eva2000, do you know what other affect this setting has? I am running the same setting as before and I don't have any issues as of yet.

I wonder what evil they found in 403 that caused them to replace it? Proabably had the plague or something. maybe that's why I had to reinstall Nvidia drivers right after the flash. I guess I'd better flash out just in case.

not sure... not all core2 cpus support PECI even for same model if you look at intel spec finder sspec database so if you cpu doesn't support it enable/disable won't matter.

Bios 0403 is working fine, but I don´t think this strap has anything to do with the performance. It just makes using of more dram dividers possbile.

But I´ll check it soon.

The guys at asus who run the website must be smoking pot. I called tech sup reseller line yesterday and told them about the 501 bios up there by mistake and they said "nonone goes to the ftp site so it doen't matter" u h h h h . . whatever. And it still hasn't been corrected. Anyway, 0404 ezflashed and for the first time didn't reset any of my settings and didn't have to reload nvidia drivers. Something a little strange going on there.

I've the SL9S7, earlier E6700 batch before they update the hardware to SL9ZF, suppose better overclockability but higher heat than the ZF.
Best thing is it's PECI enabled...no wonder my temp were a tad high when I always kept PECI dissabled :D

Did you guys see the follow-up P5K Deluxe review at xbitlabs yesterday (June 26)? Some interesting test results there re: strap changes, though I'm not sure the author's conclusions are correct.

yeah saw the article at Xbitlabs.. interesting that 0404 bios didn't have a strap change at 500FSB. I wonder if it was due to the settings used ? IIRC they had ddram static read disabled version my AUTO and much looser sub timings.

so eva what is better leave it @ AUTO or disable, I am using your settings atm, seems to work great tho:)

TB and Static read at AUTO should suffice for 0311 bios at least... 0404 wasn't as stable for me so didn't use it much went back to 0311 bios :)

Thanks eva2000, my board seems to run better w/ static read on Auto too. Of course I'm using a quad so strap change at 500fsb is not a factor. (At least not yet!!) ;)

Damn , just used your settings and wham* I get to set my memory up to 1176 stable as a rock. Thanks a bunch! I'm amazed that 4 gigs needed to have timings tightened to oc better and stable. go figure.

Am I the only one who actually set the Dram Static Read Control from AUTO to Enabled???
It's EVA2000 who referred this link to us on I4memory and mentioned that there's no negative effect of strap change for 0404 BIOS but yet I still see everyone including EVA2000 setting DRAM Static Read Control to AUTO..:confused:

With bios 404, my board wont even post with DRAM Static Read enabled:down:

interesting indeed... worth a look later.. can't right now as E6750 G0 has an FSB wall around 490-495FSB

Any ideas on 404 why it wont post with DRAM Static Read enabled? No voltage seems to do it, and the system just seems to throw up when I enable it.

0404 already tightened latencies more than 0311/0403 personally i'd go with 0311 for more stability

As for me, if I set DRAM Static Read Control and Transaction booster BOTH to enabled, the motherboard will boot but NO post and screen.

I find there are only two options:

1. Dram Static Read Control set to Enable OR Auto
Transaction Booster set to AUTO

2. Dram Static Read Control set to Dissable
Transaction Booster set to Enable 0 or 1

Either options will boot and post fine, np.


Performance wise, I'm still uncertain which configuration is the best.
We all have seen EVA2000 excellent personal findings and contributions.
Now there is another new "Ultimate Overclocking Guide" done by X-Bit Lab with the new official BIOS 0404. The guys over there have some very interesting and informative results to disprove the "FSB Strap Change" in our mobo. Apparently, FSB Strap Change is solely upon to the user and not the mobo itself.

So Transaction booster (0) is faster than (1) right? And I have it set at 0 with DRAM Static Read to AUTO.....I had a problem with windows freezing, fixed by going to 30 on TRFC.

Just as I mentioned in Stilt's thread two weeks ago - post - if you can (which depends on how high FSB and Mem you're on) - the ideal set of settings as far as performance goes is: Static DRAM Control as Enabled, Command Rate at 1T, and Transaction Booster Enabled on Boost 1. But with increasing memory frequency, one will have to finally give up first on 1T, then Static Read Control will need to be Disabled, but even at DDR DDR2-1200 4-4-4 one should be able to stick to Transaction Booster Enabled at Boost 1. I have some screenshots at work, but forgot to transfer it to USB key, which show Dual SPi32M at DDR2-1212 4-4-4, with it Enabled on Boost 1. But at this speed, it was 2T and Static Control Disabled.

I just ran the Everest test above and came out with 47.6 latency,
10,252 on the read and I haven't tweaked much of anything mentioned here (bios 0404). quad cpu speed is at 4.381ghz, but mem is at 486/584 5-5-4-15

Great that's what I need to know :)

Performance wise(maximum bandwidth), which of the following will be your pick under the same clock speed (DDR2 1175 my example)?

1. 2T, DRAM Static Read Control Enabled, Transaction Booster AUTO

2. 2T, DRAM Static Read Control Dissabled, Transaction Booster +1

I don't know how much voltage you set for your rams at DDR2-1212-4-4-4 and with Transaction Boost set to 1. My mobo doesn't seems to like Dram Static Read Control and Transaction Booster both set to Enabled at the same time...even in as low as DDR2 800 and relaxed timings, 2T.....

Thanks a lot! I think that could be why I'm getting random Orthos Blend fails anywhere from as soon as the first hour and up to ~7 hours 30mins.

I had a screen shot of ~10 hours Orthos small fft stable with 1.465v Vcore and FSB470*8 but I suspected it could be that my Vcore is still not enough all along so I'm back running orthos small fft again.

Right now I'm not even sure if it could also be my timings and subtimings are still a bit too tight at given Vdimm 2.2v (5-5-4-5/6/8/9-3-25-3-3-5/6/8)


Well, so performance wise as in max bandwidth, Dram Static Read Control Enable or Auto and TB Auto is > greater than Dram Static Read Control set to Dissable and TB +1 ? I'm just trying to find out what's the sweetspot for my configuration:)

I'm running 400@2:3 so 1200 5,5,5,12,3,30,3,3,3 vc=2.3v vc=1.525v
