Unfortunate things can occur when testing a new product. Curiosity killed the ram!

So excited I didn't heat up the the ram with a hairdryer before removing the spreaders. Instead I managed to rip all the ic's off one side of the pcb.

Anyone know about these? its not d9 and it responds to high voltage

Spectec is a offshoot of Micron who use parts that do not meet Micron spec and brand them under their own, just like Aneon and Infineon

ah, ok. I knew they were micron-based but I couldnt prove it. I had no idea what IC it was.

Those GEIL's use the same Levin PCB as crucial, etc.

Dont feel bad OP, I did the EXACT same thing with these things. I've pulled off a LOT of heat spreaders, but these you do NOT want to mess with. The balls are really small and fall off REALLY easily.... plus the tape on these units seems to be extra sticky.

I agree though, GEIL can suck it. This ram sucks (even when mine worked).

Anyway, stay away from this crap. Oddly enough i have the exact same chips (same week, etc) you should hit up Rol-Co(the guy i sold my stick to) and combine my set w/ your set to have a functional 2*1GB kit again, lol.

How do these chip revisions clock? i know micron are obviously alot better. Im not the least bit bothered with timings. just want maximum OC with my 6400 :D

Yes I set all the timings manually including alpha timings.
I agree with you. Everyones saying how bad they are but I've seen D9 do worse.

Try finding a company that has BGA soldering machine, maybe they could solder them back...

I had those sticks, but I must have gooten a bad sample... the wouldn't ru stable at rated timings & freq even. Highest stable freq = 804 MHz @ 5-5-5-15, highest stable volts = 1.975V, they ra hot like hell, the fil covering shiny "GeIL" letters rolled and melted from heat :eek:

As far as I know Powerchip was never used on GeIL-memory.
Of course there's a first time for everything, but until then it's either Aeneon or Elpida.
Both have been confirmed and are still possible, unlike Micron.

yikes! I ran 1.45v into these and had a 120 yate blowing on them. no problems at all.

Yeah I set them high for a reason. I had to to hit those speeds. I'm sure I could've tightened them down but I'm not going to waste anymore time with this ram. When I test sticks I start by running really lax alpha timings and then max the ram out as high as possible then tighten the timings from there. Here I didn't go that far. But I wanted everyone to see the complete timings so I'm not misleading anyone.

Sorry about your loss. I've blown two sets of RAM, both have been RMAed, but nothing as tragic as that.

Like I said, better try soldering them back on a BGA soldering machine (cell phone service should have one) than throw them away. If you try they might work, if you throw them away they will not work definitely.
A friend of mine once moved 8 memory chips from dead Radeon 9800Pro to another Radeon, and it worked without a glitch.

BTW if they worked and OCed well that would really be extreme ;) you would have something to tell about your granchildren

simply soldering back would almost be impossible - chips need to be re-balled first and for only a few this will be even more expensive then buying new chips

Yes, on Value modules with the silver heatspreader (GX22GB6400DCK).
Not on PC6400 Ultra with the orange heatspreader (GX22GB6400UDC).

@trans am, don't feel bad man. i did that with a cherry micron based crucial kit, i called crucial told them i F'd up and they said they could repair it under RMA, so i sent it back, they returned me a new kit, and i did it again :slap: this time i just bit it and threw them away. i heated them both times, i've done it hundreds of other times, i'm not sure what happened these two times. but that really sucked.

I don't know what everyone's talking about saying these sticks suck? Sure they're not micron but a cheap set of DDR2 2gb sticks that will do DDR1000 with ease is pretty good imho.

r00n, I'm pretty sure that the GeIL Ultra DDR800 stuff mainly uses Elpidia and Powerchip ICs in their current production runs ;).

Well I apologise, I originally posted "ROFL" for the simple fact it looked 'funny' seeing the IC's stuck to the heat spreaders. Forgive me but I couldn't help it.

But I do appreciate the balls you had to do this and inform the XS members of the result. I had to pull the heat spreaders off my Team Xtreem PC2-6400 set as they were not overclocking well and the curiosity got better of me. It was a big risk but I had to do it for my own personal satisfaction. So I know how you feel before you did it, takes courage to risk throwing $$$ away when you ain't a rich fat bastard :)

and to everyone... if it wasn't for attempts like this we would never know what most of the ICs really are. few manufactures give out those kinds of specs and there aren't many people with the balls to rip off the heatspreaders. so don't kick someone when something goes wrong while they're trying to help the community.

That is one thing I was afraid of when attempting to remove the heatspreader on some sticks. Glue is too strong and ic connection not strong enough.
