Thermochill PA140.X (For use with 140mm Fans) Voice Your Opinion!

Now that Marci has spilled the beans on the Thermochill PA140.X Prototype I felt the need to see what you guys think of the idea. Who knows, if enough of us like the idea we might get a production PA140.X radiator.

From what I could gather the radiator will be designed like a PA120.X but will be a bit wider and longer to accomdate 140mm fans like the 140mm Yate Loon fans Crediki uses. If this radiator were put into production those of you who strive for silence but have hot systems would benefit from the added surface area and larger, higher CFM fans.

EDIT: My personal Opinion is that its a great idea and if I could find a case that I like (aka is designed for silence) I would buy the largest 140.x series rad I could fit into it.

It is only a first-stab prototype, and further performance was eked out of the PA120 design after the first PA140 prototype was specced, so the PA140 prototype may not be as highly performing as it could possibly be, but it'd be pretty close. Might be another 5&#37; to gain, with an upper stretch possibility of a further 10%, but not likely. In my testing it actually outperformed the PA160 by around 5% with low speed fans (~25cfm), level pegs with the PA160 at ~50cfm, and loses to the PA160 by around 10% with 100cfm fans. Given that it cedes a 30% facial surface area loss to the PA160, that is a fairly monumental achievement, and highlights the advances we made together with the PA120 design.

If you love using very low speed fans, and can still fit a single slightly over-sized 120mm fan based radiator in-case, the PA140 prototype is the best single slower-speed fan radiator I've tested. For stronger & noisier fans, stick with the PA160. Coupled with a slow & quiet 140mm fan, which was Marci's and my final design intention, the PA140 would make for an extremely compelling compact format single-fan low-noise radiator solution that would fit into far more cases than the PA160.

Physical Size

The PA140 prototype's external dimensions are 145mm wide x 185mm long x 50mm deep (without shroud).

A 5.25" Drive Bay slot is 147mm wide.

A PA140, would therefore fit, just, within a 5.25" drive bay.

fitting a PA 120.3 is a pain in the ass in some cases already. A PA 120.3 performs like a monster with low cfm too. I dont think people need this rad...only for bragging rights. i guess it just depends on how much of a performace gain there will be switching from a pa 120.3 to a pa 140.x

I think this is a great idea. It would fit fine in say a stacker in the 5.25" bay according to Cathar. And the early numbers look good to me.

I'm currently using a GTX360. If testing showed that a 140.3 is better I'd snatch it up in a second.

i would be intrested in a 140.2 on my next build later down the line for now im happy with the 120.2

Most would say that a P120.3 is better. So accordingly a 140.3 would be better. IIRC there are tests around somewhere showing the GTX series gettings its ass handed to it.

Sounds interesting to me but I wouldn't purchase one as I'm more about performance then silence(witness my fans) and as far as I know there aren't any performance 140mm fans out there.

If I'm wrong about >160cfm 140mm fans I might be interested in this due to the ease of mounting into 5.25" bays.

There are some 140mm yates among other fans (29dBa 62cfm), and you could probably use 120mm with a shroud. So in any case, it should outperform a pa120 just how a pa160 beats a pa120.1, at least that's what I assume.

more quiet is always better imo , besides i would'nt want to break up my collection of tc rads

yeah. 140 would probably be perfect for my setup. i've got a 2x120 up top right now and it could be a little wider to fill up the whole width of the case

Exactly. Already a PIA to fit a 120.3, and only a UFO case will allow a 120.3 without modding. Fitting in a pa140 will require modding on all the cases on the market. Maybe in the future when cases get bigger and start using 140mm fans will a pa140 be useful.

I doubt it will have much of an improvement unless someday we move to triple videocards or even quad vidcards with quad core cpus. Current 120mm fans are quiet enough, even with six of them sandwiched.

-pa120.3 is a monster, I don't really see a need for anything bigger. Plus it won't be as easy to fit in to cases as a 120mm radiator. 120mm fans are kind of a standard now a days and the pa120.3 is hard enough to fit as it is, in most cases.


On a more personal note:

-pa120.3 fits in to my MM U2-UFO, a 140.X would not, so not interested by default.

-I still have a spot under the 5.25" bays on the MM U2-UFO for a pa160 if I wanted more heat dissipation as well as the space behind the hard drives for another dual 120mm radiator.

-I have phase on the cpu and the only thing on the water loop is the video card, which really doesn't need anything bigger then the pa120.3.


Don't think I would ever buy a pa140.X.

I wouldn't move from a PA120.3 to a PA140.2, but if there are PA140.3s, all the better. Bigger and more.. a good thing.

Looking at the potential heat output of the R600 cards, I'd get one. If they really do draw 270ish watts on stock, imagine overclocking a pair of these things. Plus quiet is always better.

I was under the impression that the 'new gen' of GTX rads hasn't been directly tested against the PA series, at least officially. I don't doubt that the GTX gets beat by the PA, especially at low cfm, but the difference isn't enough to warrant purchasing a PA. I expect the difference a PA140 will make will be substantial enough for me to HAVE to pick one up. :cool:

Considering the PA series was designed for low CFM fans I would think that they would beat the GTX per frontal surface area, no?

I wouldn't get one as much as I would like to. I see no reason for it. I only put my cpu under water. Any triple fan'd radiator with 70 cfm fans is already good enough for a single cpu. The biggest problem is mounting it, where would I mount the sucker. It might be the greatest for temps, but I would probably have to mount it on the upper portion of my sidepanel and I own a big case (lian li pc73 slb). It won't fit up on top where I have my old radiator with a custom shroud and plenarium. I would have to mount it under the the frame to put it in up there and get rid of the chamber. I might switch from my bix 3 to a swiftech but other than that I don't see myself changing radiators($).

That being said I wouldn't mind owning a pa 140/x I think they are awsome, unfortunately they just don't fit my need. I would probably have to spend about 400 dollars to put one in a case. I would have to buy the case and the pa. I just don't see that happening.

I take some of it back. I would be able to fit in my case by putting the fans before the radiator. So the cost would just be the radiator+ redoing the plenarium.

If it would perform at the same level as a PA120.3, or if a PA140.3 were to perform better then the 120.3, and it was reasonably a little more then the PA120.3, then I would def. pick one up as it would fit snug in my Stacker.

I would love a PA140.x rad...larger fan, quiet and better cooling on the best rads out there

140.2 might perform close to 120.3..less fans and noise

size might be an issue but whenever has that matter when you have to mod anyway

I'd be all over a PA140.1 if it were made. I want a single fan radiator for both convenience and noise but the 120.1 seems a bit weak.

Agreed. No arguments here. I just need a substantial improvement before I switch. I anticipate (and hope) the PA140 series will be the one to make me switch.

Width in my case isn't a problem, just length could be an issue. But if the fans were scrunched together more - like right next to each other - instead of the wider space like on the PA120.3 it would keep length down but still have the benefit of more surface area and airflow from the 140mm fans.

kind of makes me want to just get dual 160's. not to be insulting to thermochill or anything, but it's a shame the other companies don't come out with >120 rad's

The market just isn't big enough to justify making a 140mm based radiator series. Start the production if you like, but purchases will be a fraction of that of the 120mm series. The reason is simple. The amount of 120mm fans compared to 140mm fans is just staggering. You can probably name every 140mm fan model, and I doubt it would brake 10. The cases currently in design and in production have a vast majority of 120mm fans. We are starting to see more and more 140mm based cases, which is a good thing. But once again, there are only a handful of computer cases with integrated 140mm fans. Many, and possibly most people here are willing to mod their cases to accommodate the new form factor radiator, but the truth of the matter is-- most of the people in the market are not willing to. I think the production of a 140mm form factor would be an excellent idea, but the market isn't ready just yet. With so much lack of compatible materials I just don't see it worth while. Perhaps in a year when more cases are 140mm fan based(which they will be) the market will be different. But for now, my answer is no, and I would not buy it.

Most people do mod cases to support a rad. The most popular is having standoffs and mounting the rad up top and above the case. Then is the radbox style, which is easily doable with something similar.

I was thinking about getting a PA 120.3 when I finally went to water so I wouldnt have to buy another rad for a loooong time. If I can get away with a 140.2 (assuming one will exist), it will make it easier (I think) for me to get it internal... maybe on the bottom of my Tsunami if I put some casters on it.

AFIK most case's are around 200mm wide, thus making it perfect, as it utilizes more of width of the case. I would love it, but not in a single fan size. The primary problem for me, would be to get 140mm fans, but for a start that could be dealt with by using shrouds for 120mm fans, so I would love a 2*140mm rad :)

It's a great idea but i wouldn't buy it because:

It is allready a pain in the *** to mount a 120.3 in many cases, so even bigger I wouldn't dare to start with it.

for reference the PA120.1 is 167mm long (not including bleed screw) which is only 18mm shorter than the PA140.1

Therefore if thermochill were to use a tighter fan arrangement the lenght of a PA140.3 shouldnt be much longer than a PA120.3 Hopefully only 5cm longer.

Wow...that means in a P180 internal placement of PA140.1 will basically be easier than my PA160 and perform as well with my undervolted Panaflo L1A@7v or with a nice 140mm YL fan probably better becasue as I recall it has a high cfm (although the lower static pressure may equalize this)...
my PA160 cools the items in my sig fine..so the PA140 will be nearly as good and probably better

wow makes me want to get a cheap P180 and mod it for a PA140.1

but a PA140.2 will perform very well fbased on expectation...probably not far off from PA120.3 and better than almost all other 120.3 based on the fact PA120.2 did...you will get less fans and more airflow and it will be quieter

PA140.2 depending on overall size could be an awesome rad.....

Now if Petra could stock it and few 140mm YL fans

It would be difficult to fit into some cases as 120.3 rad is already a problem .. good idea but dont seems to be practical to me IMO .

a 140mm radiator wouldnt really appeal to me, not cause of the radiator, but cause the 140mm fan market is really poor in its selection, as they all tend to be low CFM fans.

I realized how bad the 140mm fan market was, when I saw the new 140mm thermalright heatsink and began searching everywhere for possible fans to use with it, and found few fans anywhere in that size, and the fans I did find I just kept thinking "damn, even a cheap 120mm fan will do more CFM at the same sound levels as these... why bother".

personally, theres got to be a big range of fans available for me, so if I want high CFM, I can get it... if I want low noise, I can get it. not be limited to one type of fan.
so for me, the 140mm radiator would be a hard sell...

I don't see any reason why both shroud types couldn't be offered. Heck, may even be quite desirable. Use a 120mm shroud for mounting onto a 120mm case-fan location, and use a 140mm shroud on the other side if you have a 140mm fan.

You could just make them with the holes in the side, for a 120mm shroud, and make native 140mm holes for fan mount? Like the other rads..

LOL. I don't manufacture the radiators. I just design them :idea:, and then needle the heck out of Marci to make them. :stick: We're about as close to opposite sides of the planet to each other as it gets.

im researching for a watercooling loop im going to get at the end of the year, and a pa140.2/3 would definitly be in it if it will be made.

Great idea if they could come to the US at a reasonable price why not buy one?

I'm not sure I like this current radiator trend though pretty soon we will be strapping car radiators to our cases.

I like the idea. Frontal area not far off a 120.3 but in a much friendlier form factor. I can see it fitting easily inside my mid tower for example, whereas the 120.3 is too long and would have to mount externally which is something I'm not the least bit interested in doing.

So yes please bring this to market.

not really.. since it would be larger in all directions you would just need to make the hole larger using a deremmel instead of just making 3 individual holes.

Or make a homemade shroud for it, for 3*120mm fans ;)

I would probably use it with a 120mm fan, and mount two to the inside fan ports of my PC-7 - it would clear the HDD rack :)

I'm sure they will have separate shroud to support 120mm fans so you can use it for more convenience to those own PA120 Series to switch to PA140 w/ additional shroud IF NOT bring out your dremel and cover w/ Fan Grill if they make one for PA140 Series

PA140 Series are longer in length and your modding was very close to the end which will not going to fit PA140 Series with the same holes, you will need a custom piece of anodize aluminum to cover up your dremeling work if you want to fit PA140 Series in the future, this is too soon to be conclude anything right now so wait and see the final stage of PA140 Series and exact dimension of it first to make any changes

Given the same 120mm fan, by around 25&#37; with very weak fans (25cfm), and by around 15% with strong fans (100cfm). That's just the prototype though.

Cathar: is PA140 based on PA120 Series designs w/ few additional row? any changes make to the fins density?

if i can get a stacker case and fit this in it plus 2 or 3 cd drives, damn need to find a space for my 4 hard drives plus a 120mm fan maybe the back? we'll see but yeah i'm down for the 140.3 if u can make a universal mounting kit for stacker cases so we don't have to modify i'll be extra happy :) this would be nice too cause i was gonna go phase change cooling for cpu and WC the mobo and gfx and i was scared a pa120.3 wouldn't be able to handle it

one 140mm fan will be larger than three 5.25" bays, if you want to fit it in front of Stacker then you got nothing left for CD-Drive :)

Since I had to mod my case to fit in a PA120.3 rad I wouldn't be put off by having to mod again to fit a 'PA140.3' (I'd find a way to make it fit :)).

Aren't we taking a liberty by talking about a 'PA140.3' anyway? (I think the PA140 was only mentioned in regard to replacing the PA160).

if a 120 shroud had the same space between the fans holes as the current 120.x series that would solve all the fitment issues with precut holes, no?(depth might be an issue)

If you were using 140mm fans it would be wider and the rad would be longer. thus you could just use a fan gril like those sold by thermochil on top of the case and then cut a larger rectangular hole for the radiator. Thats how I have my current radiator setup.

btw, the way you ahve your rad setup is EXACTLY like what I did for a member here.

I'm just sitting back and watching the general response for now... we're still working flat out just to meet demand for PA120.2, 120.3 and 160 format rads... need to drum up some in-house support for the 140 footprint to take it any further. Now would be the time to mail me with any tweaks since the original design tho fella...

I would certainly purchase PA's in 140 format.

So Marci would do a PA140.1,2,3, and would you even like to think about 4?

What stacker do you have?

if you are thinking what I have already done I can show you with my case.

As if the 140.2-3 goes from drawing board to manufacturer then I could just disconnect my 120.3, and connect the 140.X and all would be good, maybe just a little modding to the base of my case.

We do a production run of 500 (won't break even on prototyping etc til first 1000 have sold), and we have 60 folks who say they'll buy them... do the maths. 60 people isn't "a lot"... it's a handful. And this is from the "best attended" forum for watercooling worldwide...

I already bought two 120.3s :-P

If I hadn't just ordered a 160 and two 120.2s I might have bought one (or more) of these - but if they are ever made it will be a while, so that's pretty academic.

Still, I'm probably (almost) the only person who wanted a radiator that sized in about 220 x 220 of active surface area, requiring maybe 240 x 320 to mount, and with a shroud for 2 x 120 fan - strange - couldn't find one...

A single 160 was too small, ended up with 2x 120.2 and a bit dubious that I can actually fit both of them where I want them. If pressed can always stick them outside the case.

a pa140.3 or pa140.4 would be just the ticket for external mounting especially on the big cases.

i'd like to get my idle -> load temps down a bit more so I could probably be put down for a 140.3 or a 140.4

I would be most interested in a PA140.1.:slobber:

It's hard to say I'd buy it or not since we didn't see the actual rads and performance data yet so a lot of us still observing and waiting for more details on PA140, once it had been done and proven its performance and I'm sure lots of us will consider to get one to replace PA120 Series. I'd get PA140.3 over Quad-120mm Fan Rads due to compatible for internal mounting!

Even though a PA140.X is tempting, i don't think that today's cooling demands and space limitations can't be covered by current PA's.

We would have to look at upcoming GPUs as they are racking up the heat these days. The R600 is rated at 240-270w power consumption stock according to the things I have read. Imagine overclocking.

i rember when 2 80mm case fans on a p1 was overkill even overclocked to 233mhz

A 140.3 would work nicely as a monster intake system in the front of a stacker...

Would I buy one? Probably :D

I think the key is fan support. If you can somehow create shrouds that can accommodate both 120 and 140mm fans and please wassup with the foam gaskets, it will gain more acceptance. I mount my PA120.3 and I think its better that way. Fresher cooler air.

Sure thing, but I'd say on many cases you could fit a PA 140 where a PA 120 fits. So it'd give you just a little extra performance or just some even quieter fans (due to even lower speed), so in the end it'd be a good solution I think.
Why make rads longer and longer if there's still some space left on the side :D
