G.Skill F2 6400CL5D 2GBNQ - testing

I can't find much info on these kits, so I decided I'll share my results.

This time around I decided to not spend money on high end parts until I was comfortable enough with this. My last 3 or 4 expensive kits were all OCZ, so I decided to try stuff I have never tried before. I got this stuff on sale for about $220 CDN which is about $190 USD. Is it worth the money? Lets find out.

Setup:

E6300
Gigabyte DS3 (F10 bios)
G.Skill F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ
OCZ 520W

Sticks are rated 400Mhz 5-5-5-15 @ 1.8v.

Starting with the basics: 400MHz 4-4-4-13 @ 1.9v

Not bad. 100% stable too.


Something more interesting: 450MHz 4-4-4-13 @ 2.1v

DDR900 and appears to be very stable. Can't say 100%, but it looks good. Here is another run, maybe this one is bugged?

Unstable. I got a shot at 465MHz but windows rebooted when I opened paint.

Is it worth it? I have no idea, you tell me :). As far as performance goes, I think from 400Mhz 5-5-5-15 to 470MHz 4-5-4-13 is not a bad deal. My 24/7 will most likely be 450MHz 4-4-4-13.

Perhaps someone here can figure out what kind of ICs these have from the information I have given? It would be nice to know.

Random notes:

• tRAS appears to make a huge difference when it comes to max FSB. When set to 12 I get no post with any timings. Maybe its a DS3 thing, but it looked like it was tied in with the sb.
• More than 2.1v resulted in nothing.
• MCH voltage was at 1.3v.. 1.2v was only sufficient up to 440MHz.
• I had to keep PCI-E freq at 104MHz for 430MHz+ and 105MHz for 450MHz+. This one has got to be a DS3 issue.
• CAS5 allowed for a much lower FSB than CAS4. I could boot upto 485MHz on CAS4, CAS5 is no where near that.
• I would test more, but vdroop is much too great for now.

Do you know what rev # your DS3 is?

my 2GBNQ runs with 470mhz 4-4-4-12 @ 2.25v and 533mhz 5-5-5-15 @ 2.25v. :toast:

I just picked these sticks up with a few other things, will be trying them in a p5n-e with a e6400. Will post results when they get here. Ordered a new stacker case as well. THis ram was on sale 199.99 at anitec, same with the coolermaster stacker 830. Really excited here lol

87x2 is almost 180 CDN. So not much cheaper... Thats some crazy divider you are using there.

Plester, Zolkorn or Riverna can you please post screenshots of memset please. I have gotten it to boot windows at 500MHz, but its not stable.

EDIT: Ok I found the magic timing. I still need those screenshots to make my life easy :D

I listened to Plester's advice and set all other timings to auto in the BIOS of the DS3. And I got this on the second try:

5-5-5-16 was no go. 5-5-5-17 at 2.2v was go :)

But auto made the timings very ugly. I need to work on those for the time being.

Kingston is not what I would consider to be generic :)

tried tighnening up timings at ddr1000 with my GBNQs and can do about 350% w/ memtest at 4-4-5-15 (2.2v) befor it kicks out the first error. just tried ddr900 at 4-4-4-12 and fully stable there.

2gbb kit is $164 at the egg now.

I need at least 850mhz and I am hoping for cas4 but I think I have to accept cas4...

My single stick does 510 MHz at 2.1V 24/7 stable, 5-5-5-15 on my DS3 3.3. But I think my DS3 overvolts the mem a bit, so don't expect every board to do it at 2.1. Past this it's not stable, even with increased voltage. I can boot at 520 but opening CPU-Z crashes hehe.

I would run 'em at 500MHz 24/7, but my E6300 won't touch 3.5 GHz and I get better performance with the E6300 at 3.15 and the sticks doing 450MHz

P.S. Got 4-4-4-12 at 2.1v, testing for stability.

what voltage you try? nice overclock

I think it was between 2.1v-2.2v in the bios (like 2.178v or something), there isn't any >standard< options of 2.1v, 2.2v, 2.3v etc. but strange >odd< voltage values on this Asus P5N-E SLI bios.

Price/performance wise these modules are looking very good, might be able to squeeze a bit more MHz out of them when I get more time.

I'm not so lucky as you are, mine are only stable at 4-4-4-xx with 2,25V! Since they are rated for 1.8~2.0 Volts is there any real danger in running them at 2,25V ?

Are you running default speed?

Check your subtimings, they make a huge difference for 4-4-4.

Those were left at default (P5B Deluxe). I've read the G.Skill / P5B Deluxe thread and will change them accordingly. Will report later :)


EDIT: I tested:

4-4-4-12 4-42-3-11-7-13 with 1,9V = BSOD
4-4-4-12 4-42-3-11-7-13 with 2,0V = BSOD in Windows

4-4-4-12 6-42-3-11-5-14 with 1,9V = Booted into Windows with errors...
4-4-4-12 6-42-3-11-5-14 with 2,0V = Didn't test... too busy repairing my damaged Windows

Any suggestions?

You are being way, way too conservative. I was using those timings too and I couldn't get anywhere. The ones I use now:

tRFC: 45
Write to Precharge delay: 14
Write to read delay: 11
tRRD: 4
Read to write delay: 8
Read to precharge: 6

Honestly, I don't know what these translate to in the DS3 as I am getting these from Memset and I know memset reads a little differently from the BIOS.

Basically, dont be afraid to loosen the delays. I was trying 50-16-12-8 (memset) kinda deal 500MHz on this DS3. One thing you could do is just set them high enough to get into windows, and lower them while testing using memset. Don't close memset too often or you will have to restart.

I should find the exact relationship between the bios and the memset timings. It sucks when they dont translate directly.

You should try these as posted by the G.SKILL rep:

TRRD: 3
TRC: 20
TWR: 6
TWTR: 9
TREF: 1
TRD: 6
TRFC: 42
ASY LAT: 2

With above timings I'm now running 5-5-5-15 @500MHz (1000MHz DDR), 100&#37; stable Prime95 24hrs+ blend mode verified:

You have an ASUS board (I am guessing..), I do not have all of these subtimings available in the BIOS. I am missing trc, tref and async lat. Memset doesn't support those timings either, so I am out of luck there.

Also, what is your memory voltage and CPU FSB?

i agree ahmad, seems that the ds3 is lacking a few settings for the subtimings that even my cousin's p5b deluxe has, i almost feel that if we had access to those, it might help to boot higher memory overclocks from the bios.

I can't go over 1100-1120 from bios, but with memset, i was able to hit 1260 with my cousin's crucial anniversary at 2.4v

I guess I'm just gonna give up on this...

Yeah its very hard to get high FSB with 4-4-4-12, but 4-4-4-15 or 4-4-4-16 works good :)

For 500MH FSB (1000 DDR) 4-4-4-12 is a bit too aggressive for these modules.

I can easily do 4-4-4-12 running at 400MHz FSB @1T but that needs a slight bump in the NB voltage.

There is minimum real world difference anyway between CL4 and CL5, it's the higher C2D clocks that make the most difference.

Just run it at CL 5-5-5- 15/16/17/18 at 2.1-2.2v max, better to max out the FSB clocks than just low latency timings.

Was that directed to me?

I have mine at 400MHz and I have no intention of overclocking them. I just wanted to run them at CL4 stock speed. But if there's no real world difference between CL5 and 4 I'll just leave them at CL5.

At what voltage is your NB? Mine (P5B Deluxe) is at 1,45V, a little high perhaps?

I think he has some i680 platform :)

I had 7 sets of NQ and only one did't work fully stable at 500 MHz...

Two the best sets:

1) 500 Mhz 4-4-4-13 2,4v (P5B Deluxe)
2) 533 MHz 5-4-4-13 2,25v (P5N32E)

Close, it's a 650i SLI board as shown on the page 2 screen dump, currently 1.39v NB, 60mm fan on NB, 80mm fan cooling the memory modules.

Your 7 sets of NQ dimms confirms what I originally thought, 500MHz FSB was easy for me.

I couldn't quite get 533MHz stable in Prime95 it (asking a bit too much for budget modules I guess! :)) fails after a few mins even at >2.34v~, ain't tried higher volts yet, or 6-6-6-18 either.

You got some pretty good samples there!

The pair I have can't quite reach 533MHz at any voltage/timings.

5-4-4-15 compared with 5-5-5-15 gave the rig a nice boost of between 300MB-400MB increase on the buffered int/float scores.

These 3 scores are on 3 different sets :) I had one set that did almost 580 MHz... but I haven't got screen :(

These settings are bootstable at 2,35V i will do some benches and CL4 test later :)

Try 5-4-4 instead, I've found going from CL5 to CL4 made very little difference to the bandwidth at same frequency, the 'RAS# to CAS#' setting gives the highest bandwidth boost, certainly that's the case for nVidia 680i/650i boards.

I will test it later, do you think these Sticks got Micron chips?

I hope not because the failure rate for D9 Micron based modules running at =/>2.2v is pretty high (with or without active cooling) going be the reports from various threads all over the net... :D

I don't think they are Micron chips, higher clocks are one thing, reliability another.

I'd recommend you tie a 80mm fan directly on top of memory modules just to be on the safe side, especially if the system is running 24/7 in the summer heat.

I've read all kinds off things about the IC's on these modules. anything from Promos, Elpida to Powerchip and SEC(Samsung). the very first NQ's had some chance on D9, but I'm convinced you wont find those anymore.

Somebody told me these sticks certainly don't clock like ProMOS and to me its highly unlikely for Samsung chips to reach 500mhz.
so Elpida and PSC are my best bets on the IC's

just to be sure, would it be nice if somebody here takes off the heatspreader and confirms this :)

I dont think that they are Powerchip(PSC) ICs on these Sticks,
I got a 2GB kit of OCZ Special Ops Edition with PSC, they dont even
run 400 CL4 or 500 CL5...

probably not, but normally I run my system @ stock clockrates.

This settings are only for testing, my RAM runs usually 800 CL5
with all 4 sticks (2*1024MB OCZ and 2*1024MB G.Skill)

Thanks! That's the only way I can get them stable at CL4 but it's probably not worth the trouble.

I have heared, that its not so good to run over 2,20V
all the time if the ICs are Elpida, but i dont think that they are Elpida,
at least at my sticks, they should not scale with voltage like mine do.

samsung doenst react at all on voltage. PSC is at its best on +-2.1V
and Elpida scales on voltage if IIRC. so my guess is still Elpida :)

geforcerocker if your up for it, remove the spreader and give us the answer. that is if your willing to lose your warranty and have a shot at killing your ram. I know I wont remove the spreaders on my sticks :)

Elpida seems to really hate volts, low tRAS and custom timings. but you seem convinced it aint Elpida, what is it according to you?

I think it should not be Powerchips because my OCZ have them
and they do not clock that good or do that thight timings. Should not be
Elpida because they should not scale with voltage that good, my G.Skill
scale perfect till 550Mhz at 2,3V :clap: but not more even at 2,50V :shocked:

Last night I ordered a pair of these GSkill 2GBNQ's from Newegg for $81 delivered to the door. :)

Hoping they will work and overclock fine with my Corsair XMS DDR-800 (2x512mb sticks), 3 gigs would be sweet but 2 gigs will still be an improvement... I suppose we'll find out.

Not going to Vista just yet but playing STALKER made me realize I need more RAM... might reload BF2 and give it another shot now too. :D

Newegg is now selling the 2GBNQ's at $124.99 AND charging $4.99 for the shipping. Price jumped $48.99 in less than 2 weeks. I wonder why the sudden spike? Maybe somebody discovered they were putting D9's in them again? :lol2:

This is one of the few times in my life I ever bought RAM at it's lowest price point. :D

P.S. Works fine with my old Corsair sticks too. 3 gigs of RAM makes STALKER and a whole lot of other games much more enjoyable.

Jeah, I use Windows Vista (x64) and I would not have less than my 4 gigs now,
it was a big jump from 2. Vista uses 1,02GB now in idle/desktop,
just some chat programmes in background...

hmm... interesting. yesterday I was having a play about with my G.Skill HZ (D9), had them at 520MHz, 5-5-5-15, and was getting 5541/5556 in the sandra bandwidth test.

ZoLKoRn was getting 7624/7652 at 500MHz, 5-5-5-15.

Maybe the much higher FSB helps alot? :confused: Mine was at 250 compared to 500 for that.

i've been tinkering and had them running stable at 4-4-4-10 at 2.1v @ 860 ... hitting around 9500 in sandra
860 is the best this board will do at those timings and keep the cpu @ 3.0 .. it has zero options available
i'd love to see what these sticks will do at 4-4-4

on a side note, in everest with the ram running the settings i had posted in teh screens earlier, i'm getting latencies of 41.3
i'm not sure how much i trust that because that's one hell of a number for ram running at 1000mhz

damn i can get these to run 5-5-5-15 @ 500 no problem but for the life of me i cant get them down to 4-4-4-anything @ 450.

Here we are 3 years after the last entry so wonder if anyone is still around??

Picked up a set of these and have them in an Abit NF-M2 nView with an Opty 1210. OK – OK realize I the first with AMD, and can’t get anywhere near what y’all did. This setup with BHZs was able to push the 1210 happily to 3.1GHz however with the NQs I can’t even do 2.6 stable. :shrug:

Suggestions??? Running factory 5-5-5-15-2T @ 2.0v.
