The 8GHZ Project U.S.A.

We here in Team NexGen are at Nexgen Consulting trying to break the world record right now, with (hopefully) a bit of help from koolance, and some LN2 or LHe4. We have a P5B deluxe, 631 cedarmill (ES), and 2 X 512MB Micron D9GKX Memory modules. So far we have hit 5.5ghz no problem but beyond 1.4v Vcore Air, water, and even our Prometeia Capped out under the heat load generated by the P4 631. But 4ghz at 1v was pretty cool. The use of Liquid Nitrogen is our best bet at breaking the 8179.89 MHz INTEL Pentium 4 631 (Cedar Mill) world record and bringing the title back to the good ole U.S.A.

Hmmmm very interesting. Koolance cooling is plenty capable of 4GHz, but at some point the blocks can't transfer heat fast enough.

Yep, probably have the volt mod set up already. I'll keep checking back to see what kind of progress you make. Good luck!

i can get a 631 up to 5.3ghz on air cooling.. so heat definitely shouldn't be that much of an issue with water... :confused:

Why is the ln2 pot so damn tall? You could cut about 2 feet off...

Our experience with ES chips leads me to believe that the IHS mounting process isn't perfected until around the production of the Retail chip. If your lucky the thermal resistance on your ES should not be as bad as ours. As this is the worst case we have come across to date.
with a stock frequency of 3GHZ and the Vcore at 1.6v The Koolance CPU 305 Block temp was 24C and the IHS was 27C but the Die temp was still 76-82C! the removal of the IHS should solve the temperature differential.
We saw very similar readings with the Koolance CPU 300, Intel Boxed cooler, and the Zalman 9500Cu.

I'm currently in the process of removing Dielectric grease from motherboard and will test the Voltage Temperature curve once again with Air, Water, Chilled water, Phase, and LN2 will be last.

We are looking at having a 2" diameter cylinder of copper milled to our specifications for Direct Die cooling.
Most of what has been built was to get the LN2 on the chip and see what was going to happen at -196C
we had two 12" copper tubes some couplings and a few P4 boxed coolers laying around so we put them to good use. The copper cylinder in the P4 Boxed cooler just happens to be the right sice for direct Die cooling with a LGA775 socket.

At 1.7vcore With the IHS and LN2 we saw -75c on the back of the board
More surface area in the LN2 block is definitely needed.
For NON OC testing it worked rather well considering it cost us absolutely no $$$$ to make thanks to Intel!

I am far from knowing alot about LN2, but I think Id agree with the thoughts so far, not to sure about that cooling tube there.
From what Ive seen, a solid tube is best and Id say that height might be a bit overkill.

Like it's already been said, that brazed tube is WAY too tall. If you're attempting a world record, ideally you want at least a solid base on a pot. Completely solid would be your best bet.

And as far as length of the tube, you probably only need 20-25cm. Any longer and ther isn't really any point.

i would love to see this attempt, but it won't make thesame news as the 8ghz project did i think

You should just go to the pro's, call up kingpin, mickeymouse, or gorrilakos and get the best 3" tubes ever made from any of them...

Also, why do you have an AMD chip with the IHS pulled?

And BTW, the IHS on all intel chips sucks, not just the ES ones.

Intel ES just happen to have some of the worst mounts around :P

When i get a lil more time this week ill see if Kingpin could loan us some of his knowledge his name was first in my mind when I began this project.

We pulled the IHS off the Opty for testing on a swifttec Rev 1 Storm.

But I doubt that even one out of 100 or even 1000 cpu's has the guts to reach 8GHz+. Anyway there's nothing wrong about being optimistic ;)

The problem is that the real 8GHz news was weeks ago and it won't be the same again. Furthermore, it's no good idea to say that you're gonna break 8GHz, but then there are no results yet. I'm not saying that you are not going to make it, but just saying that you should have results before posting things like that. :fact:

Get a single core Prescott drop in about 1.7-1.9v and remove the IHS. you should be able to hit 7Ghz without even trying but with some tweaking 8Ghz shouldn't be too hard with liquid Helium

right. 1.7v should be no problem for a prescott with that type of cooling.

hell, i got mine to 4.35Ghz on 1.7V and watercooling and that was Superpi 1m stable. Definitely get more vcore into that sucker.

No way it's that easy :p: I've gotten to 6xxx on a p4 650 @ -100+C, 1.75 but there was not a chance that the cpu could even come close to 7xxx even on LN2. Pressies suck :(

Your either on the pipe again or something but its no where near that easy. Much less to oc to that, but to use LHe is hard.

Doesn't seem like to big a deal. If someone posts and doesn't come through then they just fade away never to return. It looks as though they are making the attempt which is more than I can say for the skeptics.

Besides that, everyone likes pics of the process and sometimes the play by play. Kind of a new approach and in turn proves that they made the attempt and it will probably help out anyone else in here gutsy enough to try it.

Let's see what he comes up with and critique his results and methods rather than the posts. ;)

The problem is, in this sport, you can never be assured of a result. No matter how hard you try, chances are always higher than not that something will go wrong.

All you can do is try your best and hope for the best, and anyone that does this has my respect, regardless of whether they achieved their goals or not.

second thing, you should first DO this result with screen and validation, then open the 3d; when i posted the 7,5ghz@1,6V anyone asked me for the 8ghz, but i NEVER said that i was sure of this ;)

and even if you reach this record remember that our cpu is very different from yours, i don't have unlocked molty or anything else, a simple cpu bought from ebay still close; and be sure, we have an Asus Commando full modded (2,1V on the cpu), and the 8ghz barrier will fall. ;)

lol we just got our commando in last night :)
id like to compare Vdroop results with you some time this week, we found some interesting things and would like to know if anyone else can replicate our outcome.

We hit ~7 in bios but condensation killed the chip (631 ES) and Motherboard (P5B Deluxe)
Luckily we have another (ES) chip to work with.

I’ve been spending a lot of time at a ManFab working with their lead engineer on a LN2 pot and other blocks so I haven’t had enough time to put up more pics and results. We will get back to overclocking by Friday.

Just thought id update everyone about today. It was indeed a sad day for all of us here at Team NexGen, Ok well maybe for me. While waiting for our P5B to come in I decided to see how my EVGA 680i would benchmark with the 631, 2GB D9GMH, 4x 250GB SATA raid, 8800GTX and E6400 C2D. With our current project at hand I hadn't the time for building my system. It had been quite some time since my fingers were pouncing about W,A,S,D, A mist the downtime today i chose to complete my system. Working with pure devotion and feverish perfection I eagerly awaited to feel the power button click before my for finger!
In an instant the case was filled with brilliant lights, shadows, the hum generated by a plethora of miniature wind turbines, nothing was more invigorating than the witnessing the birth of my creation! The stench of death filled my nostrils as i realized the brilliant light show was actually a vreg powered sparkler, as i jumped for the wall plug i knew it was frivolous action.
my heart sank low into my stomach as i realized my creations life was as short lived as my faith in EVGA.

to cut things short the two vregs north west of the CPU exploded into a shower of sparks and sizzles ending is an eerie smoke filled sight.

it would be a lot more easy to break with a good cascade.

Iv been using my spare time to work on my Prometeia for the past few weeks, There was a leak in the stainless steal corrugated Flex Tubing (SSCFT) so i had to cut the flex hose short and re braze the tubing. im going to recharge the unit with R404 later this week.

all three capped out due to voltage, At the event we had to remove our full mod because the board would no longer post. after removing the mods it worked great but we could not get the voltage required.

Both capped out at 4.8 under Stock, Water, Dry ice, and LN2 Cooling.
the chips could hold 4.8 w/ 1.4vcore on DI and LN2 but would not go 1MHZ higher even with 1.7Vcore. we believe the silicon had hit its wall.

great results with C2D, but poor result with 631's.... i think its the mobo that hold your 631...

thats what we thought at first but the 631 was hitting a dead wall at 321MHZ FSB! we used the same board w/ 3 diff procs and hit 540MHZ FSB...

My 631 can do same frequency at 1.3v... aircooled ;)

what is the other (Alu) pot that you are using?

The old "WWII" pots just weren't cutting it for us. So we spent some time and designed a new pot from a 6" x 2.5" Aluminum cylinder, got a few test runs in at PDXLAN and couldn't get a high enough Vcore, so iv been playing w/ the Vmods and designing a rev2 LN2 pot :) ill have some pics of rev2 and our new test platform soon.

The Phase cooling unit is nearing completion, I'm waiting on a 25micron vacuum test at the moment, I will beguin recharging the refrigerant on Thursday. once we get the phase unit ready for use we will make a lot more progress on our project :)

got a celly 331 to 5GHZ last night on watercooling, cant wait to use the Phase,DI,than LN2 :) WR looking achievable

we had the WR for the 331 this morning but i just saw a post about the 6GHZ 331 on DI, i guess we have the 331 WR for water woot!

is it a cascade? because if it reaches lower then -130 your board will freeze

Its a single stage for now but i am working on an auto cascade i hope to have done in 2 months and hold temps around -150c under load.

yes we have seen "freeze lock" of the motherboard occur with LN2, but we have a way of circumventing that by regulation the temperature of the motherboard, ill post some pics of our motherboard thermal regulator when i get back from a seminar tonight.

Thats why im building an Auto Cascade (Multi stage AKA multiple compressors) to reach -150c under load

Ummm....No offense, but maybe you should do a bit more reading before you decide to build your "AutoCascade".....AKA "Standard Cascade".....an autocascade is a SINGLE COMPRESSOR phase change system with 2 or more stages.....and how would I know anything about autocascades? i apologize for any confusion as the lingo for multi stage and blended refrigerant systems seems to be different here in North Idaho. Ill defiantly be reading up on alternative sources from now on and taking a look at what you have done. hell iv always been taught no never say "phase change" in reference to a mechanical refrigeration cycle...

Just out of curiousity, what does Micron use these systems for? What you're describing could possibly be an autocascade only it uses multiple - more than likely just a pair - of compressors in series. They're most commonly used as water vapor cryo-traps in vacuum chambers. Cryo-tek builds such units for a living. His autocascades are powered by 2 5hp Copeland scrolls in series and have an approximate capacity of 3500W @ -160C....

I was told that they are used to test components for space applications. Damn thats a killer cascade.... lol he just happens to use the only compressor i have yet to see :)
From what i gathered it has multiple Comps in series with multiple stages in the form of blended refrigerants :) mmmmm just sexy! so basically its a multi compressor series with an inverse Glide effect

i wish i had the money and tools and age to build cascades :(

well technically an autocascade can have as many stages as you want, but at least one of them must contain more than one gas.. at least thats what I thought.

I am not sure if this will help, buy my Cel-D 352 hits 5GHz on stock cooler.

You might want to use a similar CPU because of the high multiplier/low FSB so you'll have less thing to worry when trying to hit 8GHz.

You're right about an autocascades' ability to go multiple stages, but you definately DON'T have to have a stage which contains multiple gasses. You may be referring to the entire charge as a whole for an auto and if that's the case, then yes - you do have to charge it with different refrigerants otherwise the unit wouldn't be able to autocascade. My unit is a 3 stage autocascade charged with R123, R22, R23, R14, and R740. It's capable of -100C temps @ 200W using a single 1hp compressor.
Autocascades are truly the future of phase change as they are more efficient, are more quite (for the most part), and pull down faster than multiple-compressor cascades. The only thing that's really a drawback is finding someone who can actually build a functional unit for use on a computer. At best, there's only a handful of people in this world that could accomplish this....

The Celeron 3xx Cedar Mill series are pretty good but I think they max out with FSB too early. I'm personally looking at the Pentium 6x1 Cedar Mill series to push the 7-8Ghz range, probably the higher the multi the better.

680i boards are definately not the way to go, blew up my BFG last weekend trying to push a damn Quad Core :( :D

Hmmm..I'm still not quite sure what you mean...the definition of an autocascade is a unit which uses it's own gasses to cool another one of it's own, hence Auto- (self) cascade. The gasses are cooled in stages and ideally, the gasses would be "pure" in each of the stages. Otherwise your phase separators aren't doing their jobs ;)

If I have understood the project correctly, the task is to go beyond 8Ghz, Ok, first of all, I have never seen, or heard of a cascade that can outperform LN2. So first of all, stick to LN2. Second, the deal is not to get the right cooling, cause for the cooling there is only one way to go.. It is rather to find the right chip to use.
Since my first X6800, i have constantly been trying to find one better. I have now gone through around 30 of them, and still the first one is the best.
Meaning, stick to the LN2, go get a bunch of 65nm cellys and 631's and start trying them out..
A mediocre chip will never do 8GHz, regardless of cooling and volt.. You guys should put your efforts into finding right gear..

I'll give you lots of cred for the project, and I am sure if you put out an request here, someone will be willing to help you to get a hold of a chip.

Try Intel, they are usually cooperative when it comes to glory, honor and sweat for the motherland..

As I already said: It might have been a bad idea to broadly talk about the planned 8GHz without having results to back this up.

Your results are good, but you simply seem to have exaggerated with your claimed expectations.

I doubt that you'll hit 8GHz with this CPU, even with LN2.

Its mainly a learning process for us ATM, We are not attempting 8GHZ with a dual core.

We are mainly trying to fine tune the test system we are working with. our LN2 arrives next week and we are using our time over the weekend to test on Dry Ice.

at the moment we don't have any CPU that is remotely capable of hitting 8000MHz
we have 5 631 CPU's 3 of them are ES chips and only one turned out to be a good overclocker and was killed by a wet Mobo :P
