Well FFS, what the hell is my temp? I thought all those threads about this were just weird, now that I have time to bench a bit, decided to try afew of the programs mentioned, and this is what I am seeing. What the hell is my cpu temp?
And like everyone else, block is cool to the touch, dunno..:rolleyes:
the more annoying thing is they are likely all wrong :)
@budwise, aww jesus kriminey, they are all wrong? So is my temp like 90C and I am in danger of cpu death and solder breakdown?
Hehe, well just thought I would add a new thread, if others would not mind posting multiple temp monitoring programs, so I can get an idea if my values are matching theirs
i.e. everest 9 degrees less than coretemp and coretemp 5 degrees less than asusprobe...
Any time you run dual Prime on Conroe with VCore above 1.5v, expect to see crazy temperatures like that. The temps displayed may not be 100% accurate, but I would imagine the CPU is getting pretty hot, especially while running small FFT's.
sierra I can live with the 59 in everest, but the 73 in asus probe has me a bit concerned.
Do you have any indea which is more accurate, or should I just take an average, and assume I am running 65-66 at small fft load?
i assume my water cooling loop is fine, as the northbridge is at 31 on load, much lower than most people have reported on this chipset, I have reset the block for the cpu multiple times, I do think the cpu itself is slightly concave, so I can expect a bit higher temps than most.
But will resolve that later, will probably contact intel or some such to try to get a replacement, have not thought about it yet, as I finally have some days off and get to play with my new rig.
I believe Asus Probe reads temps way too high, especially on this board.
well, that is a relief, the 68 in core temp ain't great, but I think i can live with it, as not many apps, other than encoding are going to bust my cpu to it's limits.
I really appreciate your help with this board, now my only issue is the cheap ass memory I bought, not to thrilled with OCZ at the moment, but will give them the benefit of the doubt because of their reputation, and hope it is a motherboard issue.
One of the warning signs that the CPU is overheating is programs will start to feel sluggish. When that happens, you should definitely lower VCore, even if it means running the CPU at a lower speed.
have you tried speedfan ?
and which board p5b or p5w dh ?
and even with my water cooling @ 1.5v my 6600 will climb up to 60 deg or darn close so you can believe that air cooling or whatever your doing is just smoking that cpu. these little chips get hot real fast once you hit 1.45v vcore and higher.
regardless, those temps are way too high for normal operation
try speedfan and turn on the graph play a game for a good 10 minutes or so and come pack out and look at the graph in speedfan and see what it says your temps are, it will show idle temps along with temps under load. and gove you a good idea of whats going on.
i never use asus probe or core poop (core temp) speedfan. for me atleast has been more accurate than any. thru all the various amd and intel boards i've had.
if you KNOW its wrong and have a good idea of what the temps really are you can even set speedfan to have an offset so the temps show more accurately.

Dunno about P5WDG2 WS PRO, but on latest P5B Deluxe and I guess at newer ASUS mobo as well, they're using the Multi I/O and Sensor chip is Winbond W83627DHG which so new that latest SpeedFan doesn't support it yet.
Mind check what is the sensor IC does it use ? Find for rectangular IC with Winbond word on it !

I suggest you to use ThrottleWatch to detect if it was throttling.
The sensor chips on most boards are generally inaccurate. And since most programs read temps off the same IC, they will also be inaccurate.
A thermal probe under the heatsink is the only real way to tell what the temperatures are, at least on the IHS.
The other thing, which I believe linflas is already aware of, is that this board overvolts a little which will affect temps because you are running with more voltage than you think.
i'd trust core temp the most if any proggie.

It reads the on-die sensors and reads slightly lower than coretemp. But I still think they're a bit too high..
Here is a quick test run on my P5WDG2 WS Pro. Air cooling (Tuniq Tower 120). VCore set at 1.45v in BIOS. As you can see, Asus Probe reads it slightly higher. You can also see that Asus Probe and Core Temp are in virtual agreement regarding the temp, for what that's worth which may not be much.

It has a Winbond IC. But I can't make out the numbers because they are all washed out.

The IC is etched, but there's no white paint. The only way I'd be able to make out the numbers is by putting the board up to my face. Unfortunately, the board is not in a position to do that right now.http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...lies/smile.gif

Thanks Sierra, so this confirmed that Asus is starting to use this new Winbond chip for it's IO and sensor at their latest mobo fleet, dunno whether value class has this or not.
This chip has some new "Current Mode Temperature Sensing" technique, dunno whats that mean.
Btw, since its so new released in early Q2'06, just a wild guess that their BIOS & PCProbe team is still learning how to use it ! :D

Tried mail WInbond for it's datasheet but no response yet and still they are not putting the spec PDF file at their web site as their other product like the mainstream W83627EHG chip.
sierra, thanks for th post with temps, and at that voltage I also was getting very similar temps with asus probe and core temp, but when I set it for the 400fsb clock I like, I need to set the bios vcore to 1.5, (so board vcore 1.55, lol) does not prime stable at 1.45, and that is when the temps start getting funky like you said, I am going ot let it slide for right now, I am fairly confident thigs will go well.
bing: if you have any luck with sorting out the winbond sensor, please post back, be very interested to hear what you find out.
I have a retail E6600 L625A481, it has the rounded edges, decided to lap the damn thing, and this is the result, nice temp drop for me. Quite happy with the result, I know my warranty is shot.

Well I don't trust Core temp and Gigabyte program on my DS3. When my previous Opteron 165 was running more than 45C then my rad got really hot but now core temp says 60C but water is warm. So I think that all those programs shows too high temp.
Just my 2 cents...
