Kayl Black Frozen SS arrived - pictures inside!

Yay my Kayl Black Frozen SS phase change unit arrived just now. Here's some preliminary pictures uploaded here .

Please note is is an earlier prototype

Seems during shipping the condenser was pushed backwards from the front but i checked the inside and no actual operation damage done phew! Kayl said future units will be bolted down from the front of the condenser too to prevent it from happening :)

Unit measures WxDxH = 25cm x 50cm x 25cm with Kayl evap copper block rev3 and 1/4Hp 8cc compressor with r404a

Started the black beauty up and initially decided to use my new Digitech QM1538 DMM's thermal probe to measure the copper block surface temp but i couldn't apply enough pressure on the copper block base with the thermal probe in one hand and my digital camera in the other hand :heh:

So switched to using my infra-red thermometer with trusty rubber band so i can be hands free for taking snapshots :D

DMM measured as low as -37.3C pic taken only at -36.1C
Infra-red thermometer meased as low as -39C
Case unit display stabilized at -48C

Room temp was between 20-24C

I specifically asked Kayl to tune the system so it doesn't get too cold that cold bugged AMD64 cpus won't run, but for the system to be tuned to handle constant load better :)

Will find out if it's too cold for cold bugged AMD64 cpus or not later :D

2nd stage = applying red Performix Liquid Electrical Tape (LET) - this stuff is some nasty stuuuff... i wore a face mask and disposable gloves in handling it after reading the warning label on back http://i4memory.com/phasechange/kayl...ation_004.html - reads this stuff avoid skin and eye contact, in some californian states is known to cause cancer, birth and reproductive defects :eek: :lol:

Is that warning when the LET is wet only or when it's dry and in rubber form as well ? scary!

nearly there... just going find out how much wattage the unit draws from my UPSs.. hehe

Plugged the unit into my APC BackUPS RS 1500VA/865W UPS which already has another pc connected to it with 268W idle load for that pc. So need to substract 268W from what i see on my UPS

Unit start up = spiked at 727W minus 268W = 459W then started dropping
Leveled out load = 536 to 560W minus 268W = 268-292W operating power draw on UPS

Now that unit is in my room decided to do some more standalone tests timing how long it takes to get cold reading the unit display temp :)

1st start up
2mins = reached 0.4C
3mins = -25.0C
4mins = -42.4C
5mins = -44.6C
10mins = -46.4C

shut it down waited 3-5mins and unit display temp read 9.7C

2nd start up
1min = -31.0C
2mins = -42.0C
3mins = -45.0C

Looks wicked,

When i insulated my Board i also put the extra effort to make it 100% sealed.

TBH i enjoyed sealing the board, better to be safe than sorry.

That numbers you posted gives me idea of how much load he tuned it for... I think you are set for many years to come till CPU will ever approach that temp :) :p:

It's running now with Opteron 148 CABYE 0543FPMW but every now and again i hear like a clunk sound from inside the unit ??

Also with stock 2200mhz at 1.4v bios is only reading between -19C to -12C and windows about the same idle. Load at 2200mhz at 1.4v stock increases in temps from -19C to -8C

11x280HTT = 3080Mhz stock vcore boot into windows fine just errored in stressprime quickly so bumped it to 1.45v vcore in bios and lasted a tad longer but guess need more vcore or bad mount playing up ?

strange i tightened the wingnuts a bit more for more IHS contact pressure and my temps rose 3-5C ???

Occasional clunk (refrigerant dripping back in) is all right. It just means unit is slightly overcharged.

Pretty common behaviour. Load to unloaded software reading will differ greatly. This is what we call delta increasing with power on phase change. With about 150w, I've seen deltas going about 30c+ from evap to cpu temperature.

I honestly think the unit was tuned for much heavier load than usual :P Since you wanted to avoid cold bug all together. I bet the evap temp doesn't drop much at all from idle to load... :p
Don't think you have bad mount at all if that is what evap reads. Don't tighten it too much where you start flexing mobo,... you will actually start having worse contact.

Only cpu I know that has gone close to 3ghz prime stable (dual core) with that low of v-core was fx-60... :P In my case, I need 1.6v or so... :) (opty 175)

noise it's quieter than my water cooling but that's cause my water uses thermochill 120.3 with 3x 12038mm panaflo 103cfm fans LOL

it's a quiet humm sound and now with a probe on the compressor, compressor only reads 49.1C :)

seems it froze in windows at -24C MBM5 guess too cold for stock.. so now i have it running memtest at 11x310HTT = 3413Mhz at 1.62v bios vcore bios read -10C hehe




Guess Kayl tuned it very well for high heat loads cpuz validated but not pi stable yet

I have the exact same Opteron as you on a very similar system -evaporator, compressor, refrigerant etc...

My software temperature readings are strange also. For example the back of the motherboard is colder than my CPU software reading by about 20C. You appear to have a good mount so i wouldnt worry about it :)

I won't be using my FX-57/60 on it straight away using 148 as a guinea pig first but soon :)

Did an umount of the evap, found a few droplets of water under the socket's metal retention lever! How ya meant to protect under there ??

i always fill the socket and around it a lil with dielectric grease.

i heard if you dont you can get ice to form on the pins but that might just be a rumor. Anyways i never had any problems with the grease. Never had any condensation at all.

i never went as hardcore sealing a board as you did though.....

Lots of dielectric grease, everywhere you have a board/neoprene or neoprene/neoprene join :)

airtight seal around ZIF socket w/ very little room for air when mounted, or use dielectric cgreese anywhere where air may end up. My unit runs 24/7 and I have alot less insulation than you do, I used a 1/2" thick peice of closed cell foam on the bakc plate held down by a 1/4" peice of lucite, and used a bit of dielectric greese on the outer perimeter to make sure air didn't get in, and about the same on the fron,t, an armaflex "donut" with a bit of dielectric greese on the bottom to ensure an airtight seal on the mobo. I've found that insulating the motherboard ot that degree really doesn't help much, but it doesn't hurt either.

coldbug is a complete pain in the u know what huh :(

now that ive got my LS modded with NL11F/chilly evap/402a all my chips are sucking but the noise from the LS compressor was doing my head in :(

anyway i've got the same 148 as you eva cabye0543 fpmw and i never got the bug under the stock LS but now i'm getting it at 310htt ....which is a shame coz i was priming at 305x11 for 3hrs with only 1.55v. as soon as i clockgen upto 310 she just wants to lock up idle or load so far. might have to try multiprocessor tweak and some drive strength combos.

evap temps were about -46c and cpu -10c full load at 3.3ghz....not sure if i had a great mount either to be honest as i've only been playing for a day.

cannot wait to jump ship from AMD now!

Well removed the insulation foam and let the board dry out last night. Then using 4 thin strips of sticky back foam sealed around the cpu socket and under the metal retention lever and re-installed all the insulation foam. Used a tad less ceramique and remounted the evap etc.

Fired up the unit and it showed -22C in bios at stock 2200mhz 1.4v, then set at 11x310HTT = 3413Mhz at 1.67v bios and bios read -12C about 1-2C colder than before, although evap on display unit says -37.8C.

Even the mounting metal plate is colder than usually normally it's 20-22C now 16C and the compressor which i have a probe on it usually is +49C to +52C. Right now compressor is +44C

Vcore is my friend too it seems 1.75v bios (1.45v + 23%) allowed me to do Super Pi 1M to 8M, 16M needs me to play with mem timings which i'm doing right now.

Had to drop the vcore down from 1.78v as under load MBM5 was reporting +13C cpu temps. At 1.75v reports +6-8C cpu load temps which seemed was enough for 3371Mhz clocked 32M

It's not always necessary to use grease if you do a good enough job sealing off the socket ;) In fact, there has been a couple of times that the grease itself FROZE on me :p: But I definately do recommend using grease if you don't have too much experience (or access to the materials) necessary to have a completely insulated socket area.

@ Eva: Nice work there with the opty :toast: Glad to see you finally decided to get some REAL cooling :D A couple of suggestions:

1. Try not to go overboard with the insulation on the mobo. There's such a thing as overinsulating - trust me, I used to do the same. I ended up running into problems with contact and leaks in the insulation which were caused by too much material. Try to keep it as simple as possible. For example, on the current board on my bench rig, all I've got for insulation is some liquid electrical tape and a layer of 3/8" adhesive-backed closed-cell foam (along with the evap insulation) and it's able to maintain -115C evap temps (-114C loaded :cool: ) Also, if at all possible, track down some insulation stuff used by HVAC people for insulating pipes -> Cork Tape. It's great stuff to use on a mobo since it's able to squeeze into little areas where normal foam tape can't reach.

2. Personally, I try not to pay too much attention to evap temps. Generally, the only times I only check the evap temps to see whether or not I may/may not have a bad mount. I normally affix a thermocouple touching the IHS of a cpu and monitor that. Of course if you don't have an IHS to affix to, then the evap temps will have to do :p:

I'm aiming to pull off a sub 21m 40s 32M time at 3366Mhz with this Opteron 148 and a few 7800GTX SLI 3dmark benchies, then will be time to pluck in my FX-57 0516WPMW :D

TBH, those temps seem PERFECT for your fx60 ;)

FX-57 is installed first windows test @17x205HTT = 3485Mhz at 1.552v cpu idle temp @-19C and load @ -5C looking good. Windows froze at 17x208HTT = 3537Mhz at 1.552v, so for 1.552v vcore cpu lies somewhere between 3485mhz at 3537mhz heh.

Memtest allowed booting into at max 3570mhz at 1.552v vcore, so from my experience 1.65v vcore would probably be where 3550+ mhz will be i hope heh.

edit: looks like with vcore of 1.552v will be able to pull off 3515Mhz to start... more later :D

Okay needed 1.60v to stabilise 32M but yeah baby sub 21min! But man look at -20C idle cpu temps at 3515Mhz at 1.6v with load around -3C to -6C!

Seems 266mhz 2-2-2-0 at 3.65v is okay for a comfortable overclock on Kayl Black Frozen SS with FX-57 :)

I'm pretty sure my FX-57 is limited by cooling right now to clock any higher >3.6Ghz probably needs colder load temps.

Difference between idle and load at >1.65v vcore is as much as a +28C delta.

Here's some load tests with less vcore applied (thus colder temps heh)

FX-57 @13x233HTT = 3029Mhz at 1.504v vcore

Room temp = 23.7C
Compressor with probe on top = 40.8C
Evap idle = -42.6C
MBM5 idle = -24C to -22C

Eva2000 told me he had the cooler running for 16hrs the other day testing ram. I feel sorry for that little 8cc compressor:D

Yeah 16+ hrs running yesterday hehe... compressor never went over 55C

Tried same load test but at 14x250HTT = 3500Mhz at 1.62v

Room temp = 24.4C
Evap idle = -40.0C
Compressor = 50C
MBM5 idle = -19C to -18C

load after 1min +5C / -36.0C after that BSOD hehe guess enough to be 32M stable but not Cpu Burn K7 load stable :)

Tried upping vcore from 1.62v to 1.65v

Room temp = 24.5C
Evap idle = -40.0C
Compressor = 51.1C
MBM5 idle = -19C to -18C

Please run some sort of/any upclock memory divider...Those times are horribly painful to see for that speed :p:

oh darn it.... seems my system with FX-60 just boots up into windows then shuts down :(

if i try to power it up again, it immediately shuts down ?

i removed the evap and insulation foam to dry things out, put a hair dryer on low heat to the cpu socket to ensure it's not condensation...

left it for a few hours, then installed the insulation foam again and remounted evap....

go into windows at 200x16 at 1.552v and tried stressprime dual prime test it went for around 5mins and then rebooted, and then shutdown itself again ????

the idle and load temps are like normal idle -18C to -20C and load +0C to +1C to +2C....

soooo what can be wrong ? still condensation in cpu socket ? with all the insulation i did of the board, could it still not be enough ?

any ideas guys ?

You put dielectric grease in the socket & all over the cpu pins?

Nah didn't put dielectric grease in the socket or pins... the top side of the board was dry as a barren desert really.

But decided to take it all apart and guess what i found when i lifted the motherboard up to see the back side....

But the actual back side of the cpu socket area is dry, so maybe the puddle of water was touching the non foam/LET painted area of the back of the board ?

Luckily i had PCB lacquered the entire backside of the board so the motherboard should be safe.

Hope the same for my FX-60! Going to pluck it in on my DFI NF4 Ultra-D i have spare to confirm ....

with the pool of water on back side.. do you think that was accumulated over time due to condensation or it happened within the last 24hrs or last run ?

i only turned the system on last night for some runs.. then it was off for 8+ hrs and only turned it on this afternoon....

It's weird as the backside of board foam is dry and the inside of the perspex back plate is dry, only the outside of the perspex back plate is wet ?

Can u post some dual Core load [with 2 primes ] :) to do some compare that i want [give temps from motherboard sensor eg ite smart or ai booster if u run intel 8XX 9XX]

Ok i saw it .

must of been that puddle of water on backside of board causing the shutdowns.. as no probs right now..

did the following

1. extended the red LET covering a wider area of back side of motherboard
2. added a whole piece of neoprene foam that covers entire backside of motherboard, then added existing grey piece, then the back plate... so added an extra 6-8mm in thickness of insulation on entire back side :)

Well i ordered off Kayl an extra 9m roll of aerotape/sticky back insulation tape and 2x sets of evap mounting kits (4x bolts, washers, 4x wingnuts, 1x backing plate per set) so i can insulate other boards and just swap the boards around to play with my black beauty :)

Next board getting the insulation treatment will be my DFI CFX3200-DR http://i4memory.com/cfx3200dr/ for Crossfire :D
