AM2 FX62 Overclocking Action!

AM2 FX62 Overclocking Action!

I found that this FX62 was a pretty good overclocker. I haven’t had a chance to overclock it on water yet.
First I tested it on my -95C cascade, it lasted all of about 20 seconds, yes it has a cold bug, froze up around -40C:D
I then put it on my -30C cooler and it ran well. Nice stable speed of 3636MHz. I had to keep my HTT down because of the cold bug so I used the 18 multi, basically 202x18 using 1.58V.
The memory was running at 808MHz.

Hardware used:
FX62
Foxconn NF5 motherboard
2x1024MB Corsair 8500C5
2x 7900GTX
OCZ 700W PSU
PCIce -30C CPU cooler

The Foxconn mobo is a pretty good board, very stable, easy to overclock, and very forgiving. I like this AM2 stuff. The CPU needs very little voltage, must be that there is no stress on the chip with the High Latency DDR2:D

try cpu brain identifier it lets you adjunts latencies and reads vcore correctly

The cool thing about this motherboard is the PCIe clocks. The two x16 buses default at 125MHz as apposed to 100MHz. If you have 7900GTX cards you will find you can overclock the core on those cards a lot higher with this feature. I gained 100MHz overclock on my 7900 cards running in SLI.

It's from AMD but it's far from a engineering sample.
It's just what you'd call bare instead of retail box.
Trust me, I have much better luck when I buy a retail box compared to the Bare chips I get from AMD :D

Not at my particular settings. I looked at either Shamino or Visionarys 3D06 CPU score. Theirs was done at about the same CPU MHz only they used a FX60 and 2-2-2 memory timings. Their CPU outscored mine by a little.

By the way. You have to have new cpu mounting unless your just useing a heatsink.

I made up some make shift brackets for my Vapo mounting kit.
The new boards have 4 holes, pretty good for even pressure on the core.

Bad news for AMD, I think that the people that have try FX-60, will not buy the FX-62.
What a sad, I think that AMD must adjust this problem, otherwise many people will boicot this chip.:(

Many people? why do a lot of people live in igloos?

Less than 1 percent of users go as far as using phase change. Why would AMD spend money and resources to please the less than 1% crowd?

I didn't go higher. This 8500 I used is rated at 1104MHz 5-5-5-15 2T as aposed to what I used 808MHz 4-4-3-5 1T.

I'll have to put the CPU on water to really play with the memory do to the fact the cold bug keeps me at low HTT.

Yes I like the new AM2 myself. I think I'll be switching my 24/7 PC over to AM2.

Well you have to have cool cards to take advantage of the PCIe bus.
If your cards are doing 70C then there won't be much of an overclock gain no matter how hard you try for better clocks.

How is the HTT scaling? These chips were supposed to scale alot higher on the bus than what Intel is capable of doing and yet I havent seen anyone with a picture of them over 300 HTT? :confused:

Like I've said about 2 times on this thread, I havn't tested for high HTT do to the fact that the CPU has a cold bug. I will need to use water for testing high memory clocks and HTT.
So far I have only ran the CPU on Phase Change.

Understandable and I appologize for not seeing that remark from previous responses.

The reason I am bringing this is up is because I heard from people with contacts at AMD that the engineers designed the IMC of AM2 to withstand HTT speeds in excess of 500. I wanted to see if this is true or not which is why I asked. AM2's only saving grace is its bandwith that it can supposedly hit.

I know it can do atleast 275 on the MSI board since I know somone personally who has it. I just found it odd that you and seemingly everyone else has not pushed the HTT on their boards yet, thats all :)

The mounting holes look very similar to that of a Xeon. If you're in a modding mood id start looking there first :) Or you could get a plexi-top and drill from there

AFAIK all the FX60/62 are coldbugged to roughly the same degree.
3.64 Ghz STABLE is pretty damn impressive OPP, but i really think it needs more HTT to take advantage of the DDR2, although i'm not very sure of the HTT: DDR2 ratio and how exactly it works in AM2. Just a shame teh coldbug prevents high HTT.

Its not the BIOS, the memory controller is bugged. AMD has come a long way to fixing the divider issue but its going to be a persistant issue for running ram asynch since the design relies off of CPU speed to determine ram.

lmao^^^ my memory controller is a single channel, and can't go high htt with 2 sticks and it is in this scenario that i know of too well, that i say it IS the imc. htt is issue, not ram speed 'nuff said.

Why am I seeing all these AM2 CPU-z screenies of cpu's with a 200mhz HTT? I thought AM2 was going to have like a 400mhz HTT. Maybe I'm imagining things, but I coulda sworn I heard it was going to run DDR2-800 at 1:1.

the Opteron 170 is $400.
the X2 4000 AM2 is $330. same speed, came cache.

the 3800 AM2, costs almost exactly the same as the 939 3800 X2...

across the board, the prices are either identical, or lower then I expected.
FX60 = 1100 a week or so ago.
FX62 = 1039 today...

maybe you need to shop somewhere new.

Thats correct but CPUz has not compensated for DDR2 yet therfor it is 400.

I have the same board here with an FX62, I have not run over 280HTT as of yet, i tried 300, 350, 400 all a none boot, maybe there is some tweak im missing.

Also, im finding 2t settings while making huge bandwidth and high ram clock speeds are not giving the best 3d benches for me, i can beat 1100ddr 4-4-4 with 3-3-3 at 700ish 1T in 3d01...seems latency is still king over masses of bandwidth with AM2.

I have some 7200 EPP OCZ here, i think OPP has the same also, it clocks quite well at low latency with the SLI memory option turned off.

To give you an idea of the bandwidth i have seen, when Sandra 2007 would work i had 5600MB/s unbuffered with 3500MB/s in memtest86, so god knows what i had when i hit 4100 in memtest if i had run a sandra bench..LOL.

I just wish i had 7900GTX's here to run some sli action, all i have is ATI cards at this time.

don't expect miracles from DDR2, and we're not going to try and mimmick the 1000 other hardware reviews out there. Some general benchmark and some more unconvential tests, still brainstorming on that last bit; Friday is AM2 benchmark day;)

if you look at X-Bit labs DDR1 vs DDR2 comparo you'll see that you need DDR2 800 ram at lowest timings (CL4) to match performance of DDR1 at CL2 2-2-2.

here, in the UK from www.scan.co.uk-

X2 3800 (939) = £192
X2 4400 (939) = £299
X2 FX-60 (939) = £587

X2 3800 (AM2) = £ 213
X2 4400 (AM2) = £ 330
X2 FX-62 (AM2) = £ 720

So bar the FX-62, we are paying some £20ish premium for DDR-2 support and an extra pin.

i know that DDR-2 merits faster speed ( when running @ 1000 mhz) , but im happy with the speed of my
X2 4400 (@ 2.35 on stock cooler @ 1.35v) with 1Gb of PC-3200 ATM (3-3-3-8 @ 210), it beats my mates Wc'ed P4 EE (3.73) and it cost like half as much, so i see no need to upgrade unless, there is a huge leap in performance. ATM the thing i like the most is the nVidia 590 SLI chipset and thats it.

I got a hold of Corsair 6400C3 3-3-3-5 1T 808MHz memory and really got a boost in my 3D scores.
Later today I'll put the CPU on water and really start testing this motherboard and memories I have here.

These early revision 62's sure don't like the cold thats for sure.
3800mhz 200x19/1t would bust 21k, 13.5k+, and 52.5k. I think a another revision chip that takes 1.7v+/-50c will do it man.

I put my FX on water to test HTT. I just started and the board is running at 326 right now. I think I have to downshift on the multi:D

Is bare the same as OEM? I know OEM is only ment for putting in selfbuilt machines and so forth, I'm asking cause it's an OEM FX-60 I have in the mail.
