go for the 750i for two way sli or 780i which have both proven to hit over 4ghz with ease the little extra to 4.2-4.5 wont get you any better gameing performance! or you could go Crossfire i would recommend the evga 780i or 750i with two gtx 260's in sli and then overclock the lot can play crysis @ 1920x1080 on max settings at stock and even better overclocked. which means this will play pretty much every game for the next few years. well i hope. good look finding what you want. hope this has helped
Guys congrats for the good Q9650 batches !! anyone willing to sell its first Q9650 that can go at least 4050 with a good vcore and temps cands send me a message
Cheers
Sergio
and heres my 2nd q9650 @ 4.9ghz on air

1.2500vid: higher vcore @ lower temps
1.2125vid: lower vcore @ higher temps
no matter how you slice and dice vid.. theres always a balance :D
Where are you in greenland or the northpole to get those temps on air?
Yeah, 780i boards good for about 440-450FSB, 790i boards a little better to around 475, some reports are higher but I'm yet to get one that does. Tried 3 Striker 2 Extremes and they all max'd out around 475 using 2 different QX9650's. Main thing though is that they become unstable at high (more than 4.2 GHZ) CPU speeds regardless of multi used. The good thing is that they are a genuinely fast boards although they don't overclock as well as P45, X38 or X48 chipsets.
Have 2 identical machines, one has a Striker 2 Extreme and the other a Rampage Extreme. The Rampage clocks noticeably higher and benches higher generally ( except memory read & latency ) , but the Striker based system is way faster in Windows and is game killer with 2 x GTX 280's. I have not tried any Crossfire setups so graphics performance may be equal to or better than an SLi setup !@!
Bottom line is........If you want bragging rights for overclocking ( and don't misunderstand here, the guys in this thread deserve all the praise we can bestow) go Intel chipset. If you want an extremely responsive system, go the 790i setup. Your clocks will definitely not be as high but Windows will be lightening fast when matched up with the right ancillary hardware. However, be warned that nVidia chipsets are not as easy to clock successfully as Intel. Be prepared for some painful episodes before you get it right, but it is worth it.
I've got a Gigabyte EP45T Extreme coming in tomorrow as that seems to be one of the favoured board's in this thread and I'll see how it performs. If it outperforms the Striker 2 Extreme ( in all around responsiveness and not purely overclocking numbers which I'm sure it will do easily ) then to quote NapalmV5 " I'll napalm ASUS" and move on.
Taking all into account though, I have not clocked either of these systems successfully over 4.5GHz ( with a quad that is ..) and big things happen speed wise when you get over that number with high FSB speeds..
I have the same question as SrgtGoat. I am also going the way of Q9650 and want to know the best board available. I would think it is the P53E but just wanted to make sure. Any recommendations on RAM would be appreciated as well. I am thinking about the Corsair Dominator XMS2 8500. Planning on running this with PC P&C 750 W supply. Also planning on getting a 4870 X2 and go crossfire maybe in the future
I have the eVGA 750i and I've hit a 470 FSB.. and could probably do more but not tried yet.. thats over 4.2 Ghz on my Q9650.. So my 750i is workin pretty good so far.
also to Napalm and all you others.. question. I see you said that your not sure anyone could hit 4.5 Ghz with a 500w PSU.. and I see your point. I have the Corsair HX520. I've heard they are really good PSU's. but today I saw something that worried me. I downloaded CPUID's HwMonitor. and the PSU voltages were NOT good. Here. check it out for yourself.
Now this is a SS of my system. with 4.0 Ghz at 444FSB.. with a 1:1 Divider and my GTX260 from 576MHz to 730 Mhz. (great Card.) and the temps.. bla bla bla.
Here's what worried me. I've said a few times before that my PSU's 12v rail was running at 11.92 but this is what HwMontitor reads.. NOT good. but could be wrong.
http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/4...zfullssyk4.jpg
12v Rail is at 7.39v.. (Can't be right) I'd be having Major issues right? I just played 3 hours of HL2 EP1 with NO problems at 4.0 Ghz. There's no way it would be stable with 7.30v on 12v rail right?
then the 3.3 is at 3.0v thats ok i guess. then the 5v at 4.56. thats ok but could be better. (Are these wrong)
In the BIOS the 12v rail reads 11.92 instead of this 7.36v BS.. So I'm just not sure now. and Napalm, you said a 500w couldn't push 4.5 Ghz.. what would.. the Corsair Hx620.. or should I go bigger? 750, 800. and also do you think my current PSU is "NOT" enough.. or is it ok?
Here's my hwmonitor screen, same psu as you have!
http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/1...520whz8.th.jpghttp://img234.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif
Your sure that you use lates hwmonitor?
Why doesnt my monitor show +5V rail at all ??
ohhh... thats NOT good..
haha $#!T!
Where is your 5v rail in that picture.. also it says this in monitor. but 11.92 in my BIOS. why would it be so off.. also mine shouldn't be even at 11.92.. cuz I'm not using all 520w.. the efficiency should be higher with the less voltage you use..
I don't know. thats not cool. but thanks for posting that. now I know something MIGHT be wrong... Ahh..
Installed everest and it shows 5v rail !
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/3...20w2ap7.th.jpghttp://img204.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif
Speaking of voltages......
Which version of CPU-Z do you believe ???????
vcore in BIOS set at 1.400v
If you looking for a power supply with a good 12v rail without any mod, you might want to take a look at this:
http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php...tory2&reid=104
I have used HW Monitor and I have always had issues with it reporting correct voltages on my Asus boards, almost seems like a compatability issue. I use the included software with my Odin in conjuction with the Asus monitor software to monitor my voltages. Seems to work well.
markost could you share you bios settings for this nice overclock:up:. I just purchased a QX9650 and given the challange of getting this motherboard stable with a dual core, I should would like a head start with this quad core. I took me :shrug:a week to get this motherboard stable when I first got it. Thanks in advance.
i wish.. but if you guys wanna know: seattle area
4.9ghz @ 71 F ambient just like my 1st q9650
dont trust soft..
thanks Jor3lBR
use a mm to monitor
520watt psu is not adequate for 4.5ghz.. no way no how unless its a godly 520watt psu
suggestion: 750watt pcpower&cooling
you know you dont have to buy more psu/mobo/cooler/what not.. like ive said in an earlier post.. enjoy the hardware/oc that you already got
thanks
name/luck has nothing to do with 2 x q9650 @ 4.9ghz on air.. are you guys suggesting that i got 2 golden q9650 now? lol
how many q9650 do i have to show you guys @ 4.5/4.8/4.9ghz ? :D
while it may be my skillz.. if one of you would follow my foot steps.. you too would see how easy these clocks are :)
Hey guys,
I noticed cpu-z differs a fair bit from what I have cpu volts set at in the bios, which do you go by?
dont worry what vcore cpuz shows.. go by bios
multimeter @ chokes is another vcore monitor option
Thanks Napalm,
I'm perplexed as I set my vcore to 1.33 and under load (P95)with LLC off, cpu-z is showing 1.24 and that's the most vdroop I've ever had on any P35/X48.
This is using my UD3P.
I didn't re-install cpu-z after changing from my Q6600, I don't think that would make any difference.
That's where I'm scratching my head.
Edit: I'm also a little hesitant to use LLC on a regular basis as I can't make heads or tails if the *spike* theory is fact or fiction encompassed with degrading.
Setting 1.33 in the bios also shows 1.23-1.24 without load in cpu-z, so something is just not right here.
I have mine set at 1.375 bios, LLC disabled on the UD3P. Cpuz says 1.264 full load...
screw the i7, I'll try to get a Q9550 E0 :p
the 9550 E0's are being shipped from newegg now.. everyone's getting E0's is what I've heard.
thank you for the suggestions guys. So Napalm. your saying I should get the PC PC 750w PSU.. what about some other 750w.. or is PC P&C one of the best. I heard they were Godly LOUD.. and they are not modular so I'd have cables everywhere. but I can sacrifice some cables everywhere in order to hit 4.5 Ghz or more.. lol.
So you think a big part of my problem might be the fact that I only have a 520w PSU.. also do you think it could be causing any problems currently.. like do you think I'm maxing it out. right now.??
and how would I use the digital multimeter with my system still hooked up. or would I unplug that wire going to my Mobo and test it.. or what would I do there.. and so should I go by the 11.92 that I saw in my BIOS instead.. thats better, but not great. and don't worry. I'm enjoying my hardware right now. but I'm always wanting to change things and try new things and what not. i may, or may not get a new PUS. but I want to.. even more so if this one is getting maxed out.. also would a 750o PCP&C be enough for SLI 260's.
oh and guys. question.
How well would a Swiftech 120.1 RAD and water cooling system with a ULTRA KAZE cool my Q9650. would it be better than my Tuniq, or a TRUE.. or no not really. I'm possibly going to trade someone his swifty 120.1 setup for some keyboard and mouse I have.. they are worth $100.. but I'm only paying $20 bucks for them.. so I know price wise it's a good deal. but will that cool good enough to make me happy.. or will it not be any better than current cooling? let me know please?
thanks!
xguntherc
the 520w psu/tuniq cooler is not enough for 4.5ghz..
once youll get a beefier psu/cooler than youll run into the mobo/chipset wall
if the 750i handles 500fsb great if not than your best shot is p45 and please no asus p45 if you want an easy 500x9
Cool..
thanks for the straight answer.. I might need a new PSU then soon. lol. sadness.. also I'm lookin to go water, or get a TRUE.. is the IFX-14 better than the TRUE?
thanks for all the input!!
Hey markost, lots of good advice! sounds like for me the rampage x would be the way to go for a noobie overclocker like myself, but a got a few Q's for ya:
is the qx worth the double price over the q?
ddr3 worth it or can i use my OCZ Reapers(2g ddr2 1066 pc8500)?
rampage good with sli(gtx280's)?
things i've read say the intel chips are easier to clock, (like you said) and that there friendlier to quads and sli, true?
one last Q, you have water cooling on your regulators??(what are those)
oh yeah from my last post i said about having a slot or vid card problem , confirmed! it's the flipin #1 slot on the board, guess i,m updateing sooner than i thought.
can't wait to get into this , those AMD numbers are SOOO weak compared to what you guys are gettin!! who cares if it's dollar for dollar the q6600 is just as good if not better and the Beater phemon 9850 is as good as it gets!!
time to step up! thanks again for the input ,
SG,
Only get a QX9650 if you can't get over 450 FSB and from what I see in this thread the Q9650 clocks way better. Yeah DDR3 is faster but also more expensive at this point.
SLi only with nVidia chipsets ( not for long though). Crossfire with Rampage.
I just received the Gigabyte EP45t - Extreme but won't get a chance to try it till later this week. NapalmV5 is on the ball here and I'm going to try his setup and see what happens, even if that means getting a Q9650 as well to see "exactly" how much better it clocks over the QX.
I seriously think that this is the last throw at socket 775 so it would pay to get the research right if you are going to fork out over 3k for hardware.
Regulator block is from Alphacool (old photo. using 3/8 tubing now)
Watercooling
Regulator Waterblock
Rampage / OCZ ReaperX
Striker 2 Formula / Reaper 9200
I'd say get the Q9650.. it's E0 stepping is better than the QX.. and it can clock just as higher.. or higher.
also Markost. thats a crazy sweet H20 setup. i wish I had it. Did you see my post above. is the Swiftech 120.1 RAD and ULTRA KAZE any good. would it cool better than my Tuniq, or a TRUE. as I might get that setup. even though it's cheap and CPU only. I really wanna put water on my CPU. as the GFX card doesn't need it for now. but I don't have $300 to add water to this thing.
I noticed that too. If the E0 Q9550 gets to reach the same FSB level as the Q9650 does, it'd sure be a great bargain (esp. for poor boys like me ;))!
Shall we include the Q9550/E0 discussion in this thread (needs to update the thread title then), or start a new thread focusing on the Q9550/E0 alone? Anyone?
A stepping.. you mean A in the batch number..?
Just get a E0 Q9550. or a Q9650 and you'll be happy. any one will more than likely hit 4.0 ghz on air.. most have with no problems.
Installed a UD3P tonight and at last ive managed to boot at 500FSB which i couldnt get near with my Asus boards.
Ive left nearly everything on auto iin the bios which imressed me but looking on easytune its raised some of voltages to scary levels:eek: which probably explains the 500FSB
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/8094/capturedf8.jpg
Its not stable at all, it will run prime small FFT for a few mins before BSOD but blend fails instantly.
Nice start. Once you get that joker tweaked hopefully you'll be fine. My 24/7 goal is 500x9. Once i find a board that'll do that fsb i'll pick up a few more chips. ive been waiting on quad results for that UDP board. I'll get that one or try the one Napalm is using.
weird.. your not on insane volts.. at 4000 with 8 multi CPU-Z shows 1.296v.. thats not very high.
and my machine at 4.3 Ghz on 1.3456v fails Small FFT's instantly, but blend goes for about 10 mins then system crashes BSOD. and Large runs for aboug 5 mins. but I'm still tweaking and need better coooling.
but I've managed a 478 FSB on my 750i and I'm sure I could get it stable with the right tweaks.
How can I tell from the Intel retail box if Im getting a E0 or a C1?
All 9650's are E0 :)
yup they are... and great ones at that.
oh and guys. Question.
what would be a better choice. They are both Lightly used. The GT Odin 800w PSU.. with the software adjustable pots, on sale for $81 bucks or something. or the Silverstone Decathalon. aka the DA750 for $115.00 I know the Odin 800 is cheaper.. but witch is better and would be better for pushing my Q9650. should I just get the higher w, cheaper one. the odin 800w..???
Apolla.. i see you said to get the Silverstone 1200w.. thats huge. I don't think I need all that.
I have the Odin 800 and I think it's one of the best PSU's I have ever owned. I had the OCZ Gamestream 700w before and this Odin kicks it butt.
just got my 2nd Q9650 batch #L827B623 pack date 9-25-08 .too tired to install it . too burnt out from last nite tryin\ oc'in theGigabyte P45UD3 which I RMA'ed this morning (it was a DUD ) & I get another UD3 tomorrow Love that EGG Soo easy to work with !! ..
lol same batch/pack date as my 2nd q9650.. may yours be better than mine bigslappy :toast:
well i finaly got to os boot the ep45t extreme + 2 x 1GB supertalent 2000ddr3.. wacky/loco combo to say the least :shakes:
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/8985/sysjw6.jpg
ep45t extreme
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/7271/aqua3xx6.jpg
ep45 dq6 - 1:1 500mhz ddr2
http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/2643/aqualg2.jpg
http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/8702/9251065uv9.gif
despite the benches.. dq6 is way more extreme than the "extreme"
ill keep trying at 4.8ghz os boot but if i do get it to boot itll be a miracle.. ill get more ddr3 kits before i give up on the extreme
dq6 (1.94vtt bios max) - if you want the highest/max q9650 clocks
extreme (1.80vtt bios max) - 24/7 @ 4.5ghz maybe big maybe @ ~4.8ghz
the idioticity of things huh ?
wow.. some 2000 Mhz Ram.. thats some fast @$$ Ram. I'd sure love to have some of that. instead of my ghetto 1000 ram that only runs on 933 Stable.. anything else BSOD.. lame huh. haha
So Napalm. what do you think about those 2 PSU choices.??
Also Napalm I have one other question for you. I'm at 4.0 Ghz with 1.304v in CPU-Z but in order to run at 4.1 Ghz Prime Stable I need 1.354v in BIOS and I've only gone up to 1.35v on FSB/VTT.
would I have a better chance at being stable at 4.1 Ghz if I went to 1.4v FSB/VTT.?? and do you really think it's ok to run VTT that high 24/7?
and my last question for you. is what clock are you running for 24/7 on your Q9650??
So Mate !
Is it worth pulling the Striker down for this board or going back to DDR2 and a DQ6. I can swap the EP45T extreme over for a DQ6 from my wholesaler if required seeing I haven't opened it up yet.
It seems that the EP45T Extreme isn't all that great at clocking the CPU and memory together. Is that what you are finding ?
thanks for the info markost and xguntherc the q9650 it is thinking of the striker II as well does it have the overclock protection like the board i have now so i not pulling the cmos batt every bad try?
on psu's, my antec 850 quattro in hwmon says 12.03v , whats the diff between that and one running at 12.48v if ya only need 12.0v, is it just to close so it can go below 12 easier?
how about this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817379009 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153043 and is the 80 plus thing that big of a deal? sounds pretty cool, consistant power , lower heat and all, but are they really better? so many don't need to go as high useing a 80 plus?
getting amped about this new sys ! bought a evga gtx 280 today to give it a shot i think it's numbers will be as good if not better then the 3870's x2 i have , so 2 of those on the striker II could be the plan for me.
Markost do you have fans on Both sides of the rad? wow pullin and pushin! that would be some flow!
SG,
Yeah, the idea here is to use low RPM fans so noise is kept to an absolute minimum. Volume of air is what's important and not the speed at which it goes through the rad. I tried a 'normal' type setup with single fans running at high RPM's and there was little or no difference to temps, so the quiet way got the nod.
Those volts are high for this chip it only needed 1.216 for 11hours small fft @ 4ghz. Volts hasnt never been the problem with this chip, just FSB.
I guess its all down to how high you a prepared to have vtt, especially for 24/7 use. Looking at hicookies quad @ 540 FSB he has a vtt of 1.63
Been trying today to get 500FSB stable on my Q9650.
Ive set vtt/Mch higher than i would normally dare (1.7+) but it didnt make any difference. Ive also copied Hicookies settings in this post but it still fails super_pi and blend instantly. My ram is OCZ flex 2 9200 so normally handles 500Mhz with ease.
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/6126/capture3dc8.jpg
This chip only needed 1.216vcore for small FFT with 445x9 but fails in a few minutes with 500x8 with 1.3vcore.
No one else so far :)
yeh i didnt know i have so many twin brothers from another mothers LOL
goodness xguntherc youre a handful :)
please dont ask me what vtt/vcore/vpll/vi/o/vdimm/vnb is ok for 24/7.. this goes to everyone.. thats up to you guys to decide.. all voltages kill hardware.. whether it takes longer or less time to kill the end result is all the same
i have suggested what psu to go with.. but at least give the odin psu a try
my goal is 4.8ghz 24/7
since road-runner posted 4.6ghz on the 750 pcpower&cooling thats what ive been suggesting.. but i can not guarantee since i dont have the psu.. up to you guys to try
its worth it if you got ddr3 kits to play with
the 4.5ghz im only able to do @ auto ratio and auto vdimm
that 1000mhz is @ 2.256vdimm.. not much more i can do with..
if i set vdimm manually: no system boot
if i set anything other than the auto ratio: no os boot
some kind of protection or the bios needs lots of fixing.. my hands are tied up at such low vdimm
if id have the corsair dominator 2133 kit id be able to show you guys 4.8ghz/2136ddr3 @ auto ratio/vdimm.. but im not gonna spend 500+$ on the kit but instead ill just ditch the ddr3 extreme and try the ddr2 extreme
but of course no one else.. not one of you got the same parts i do
some think they know better
some always looking for shortcuts
i can go on and on
its like pulling teeth and it is tiring but once one of you get 4.8ghz out of your q9650 my work here is done
-
alright.. your voltages are all messed up
ill get back to you with a ss of easytune @ 4.5ghz
