ok. I see. I remember someone doing this a while ago. It didn't seem like the returns for dropping the multi were worth the time and effort. I haven't seen anything recently on this so I could be going from dated material.

I just sold a Q703 batchcode 6300 that was attrocious. 3GHz was a struggle. I got it off of ebay and was under the impression it was an L629B as that was what the seller had posted in the ad. I contacted him and asked if he had others and if he would swap with me. Amazingly enough he had both L629B and L627A so I opted for the A. It is on its way and I am hoping this will give me some serious OC as I have seem great results from others with this batch code.
I have an E6600 L644G. 3DMark stable at 3,9 GHz on air cooling and ~1,6 V. Runs really cool, about 10 degrees Celsius cooler then my old L625A, and about the same as my old L633F.
My 711A is currently doing 3.1GHz on 1.35V using low-end air cooling. 24 hour orthos stable. Was able to boot no problem @ 3.6GHz, 1.5Vcore. Haven't tested that much though.
^^^ Ok. I dropped my multiplier to 8x and cranked up the NB/Mem/CPU voltages a little and now I'm running 3.4ghz and after 20 minutes now (was only a few minutes when i took this screen) in Orthos.... everything seems good. My volts on the CPU are 1.5v.
Now what is confusing me is that CPU-Z says my Core speed is 3400mhz yet orthos and coretemp 0.95 both say 3825mhz. I know my CPU is running at 3400mhz..... odd.
When i simply tried to ramp up the CPU to 3.4ghz.... it would fail within the first two minutes on Orthos. So i think i'm heading in the right direction now.

OCCT? CPU testing program? I don't know the highest Orthos stable speed. I think it is somewhere between 3,7-3,8 GHz.
1.6 V isn't any problem as long as you have good cooling. I've given my CPU 1.66 V on air cooling, and it still runs. ;)
Right now it runs at 3,4 GHz and 1.44 V. I think I can lower the vcore without any problems, but I like to have some margins. With my Tuniq on lowest speed, 900-1000 RPM, it stays around 50 degrees on load.
Im water cooled and my E6600 is hitting insanely hot temps, low to mid 50s. Im gonna lap it today. Boots at 3.8ghz, max prime stable so far is 3480 @ 1.47v. This is better than my E6420 which needed 1.525v to hit 3480, (and hit a wall at 456Mhz FSB) but the temps were alot lower around 45c.
Anyways, I checked the base and its like a spoon so I think a good lapping will drop my temps significantly. Hoping I can overclock higher with less vcore if I strip off some of the layer between the core and the top of the IHS. Gotta hit the hardware store for some 300, 600 and 1000 grit sandpaper.
Starting to test an L652B112 now. Will update with some results shortly :)

What vcore do hw monitoring programs show when you set the vcore of your Conroe to "auto"? I also have a vdroop modded P5B Deluxe and all programs read 1.432v. I was wondering if it is just a read out error or that the board might be seriously overvolting, possibly because of the mod. The Vdroop mod worked fine with a Celly 347 atleast...
EDIT: Running Orthos Large in-place FFT's at 3.3Ghz stock vcore. Is it truly overvolting or do I have a golden CPU?
If it doesnt seem to change, try resetting the CMOS. I doubt you are still on stock. Using Everest will show the proper voltage I find. On Auto @ 3.5 my cpu was getting 1.59v - I was like wtf. its prime stable at 1.475v, so 1.59v is a bit extreme. I wouldnt leave anything for voltages set to auto, makes me nervous that it wont just spike it and fry something.
Right now I'm running my e6600 L647G241 @ 335 (3.015ghz) 24hrs orthos stable, stock volts, stock intel cooler. I'm not going to push it yet as my QuadGT is really flaky and waiting for RMA board this Monday.

In my bios settings, what is the SPP <-> MCP Reference Clock? I have it set to Auto. Will adjusting it help out overclocks? I've kept all my PCI-E settings at 100mhz.

Boot at 9*333mhz, done more tests at 3.6ghz 1.43v and this setting is fully stable. 3.7ghz takes a lot of voltage to get stable. CPU is very good at low-medium vcore which is nice for 24/7, however it's not a record breaker on air. Will test phase next weekend or the weekend after (my unit is getting fixed atm). Overall it seems like a very nice CPU, certainly as it's relatively new :)

I know this is not extreme OC'ing, but I just got a L640A823 E6600 and I've got it folding stable 24/7 at 1.335 vcore at a 3.0 GHz OC' and it seems to run cooler than my other E6600 L632B444 OC'ed to 3.2 GHz and a vcore of 1.40v (maybe a degree or two, I know more clock and more vcore) Both chips with only 1 hr Orthos (I'm impatient anal) run about 20c idle 32c load with an ambient of about 21c (please don't anyone tell me about the idle temp being below ambient with air cooling, I'm only using the software temps as a caution my HSF or case fans don't go out) and then I have to boot back to Ubuntu 64 to fold. So far so good, I think folding puts as much strain on the cpu as Orthos anyway. It's crunching a p2609 at a tpf of about 13 mins, it's only on frame 19. ("cool city" so far)
Well I lapped my E6600 with 320, 600 and 1200 grit. Didn't go for the perfect mirror finish but the base is level now. Took about 45 mins at 320 grit to remove the spoon effect and actually show signs of sanding on the middle of the chip. The chip was really bad.
Before, max stable Orthos was 3480 @ 1.475v.
Now I'm running 3500 (389x9) @ 1.46v 5 hr orthos stable. Temps are 43-44c load. Much different than 52c at 3480!! Even trying to force 3.6 @ 1.55v while not orthos stable loads about 48, before it would hit 56 - 57! Overall lapping was worth it, unfortunately the chip isn't much of an "golden" overclocker. I was hoping 1.5v would get me 3.6v.
I may lap my E6300 and toss that back in. It does up to 3590 @ 1.375v and 3604 @ 1.45v, while the E6600 3545 needs 1.5v and it just gets worse very quickly. I cannot get 3.6 orthos stable and thats all I was hoping for. :rolleyes:
My hangup is the 4MB cache. I want the extra cache, but am uncomfortable giving the E6600 so many volts when the E6300 runs higher on less. However 1M is almost 2 seconds faster on the E6600 (16.2 vs 14.2 seconds)! I've gotta test 3dMark and see if there is any notable gains while using the E6600 over the E6300, cause one of these chips has to go!
Has anyone else tested an E6400 or 6300 vs. one of the 4MB cache chips?
Yeah the vcore thing is a quandary. I have a E6420 OC'ed @ just 3.0 GHz, vcore 1.35v (in BIOS) 19c idle (screwy Core Temp) and about 35c (hopefully less than 40c) load, my ambient is about 21c. Results are with Orthos for only 1 hr, I fold SMP in Ubuntu 64 6.10 plus I'm "patients challenged". I think folding puts as much strain on the cpu as Orthos. Both of my E6600's run about the same temps with the same vcore or a little more. One E6600 is OC'ed @ 3.2 GHz (the hotter one, D'oh) and the other E6600 is OC'ed @ only 3.0 GHz. I have my E6300 in a Asrock 775DUAL-VSTA mobo ATM and it's only OC'ed to 2.1 GHz. (the 775 is not too good for OC'ing, but IMO a great interim board)
well im having problems getting over 3200 with mine. I have to run 1.47v to get orthos stable for 4 hours. dunno. if I try and go any higher i just get errors.
system will post @ 425x8 @ 1.5v but will fail in about 20 min of orthos. System will not post if i raise my mch or fsb voltage any more, they are already at +.1.
Anyone have any suggestions? maybe just a bum chip?
