Soo.... what good is 16GB of RAM if you only have 32 bit?
Makes for a bigger e-p33n.
1GB in mine
Running Vista Ultimate, it's uptime is nearly 5 months if you take 2 reboots out of account. I never knew it was that good with low amounts of RAM :p:
IIRC, Server 2k3 and Server 2k8 can both utilize very high amounts of RAM on x86-based systems.
Oh darn it old man now i started to look for Quad socket 603 board and well those chips are cheaps as nothing, which is good thing
Well here's some data about which 32bit os's can utilize more than 4GB of ram :)
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system...AE/PAEdrv.mspx
I see.. I only know PAE from Asus mobos, helps you utilize a little bit more of your 4GB of Ram in good old XP 32 ;)
Still, I'll leave my Sammy running with 2x1GB. It's more than it needs anyway, 1GB was fine too, I just wanted dual channel on principle :D
Anything that wants or needs a lot of ram runs on the harpers o the i7 anyway, like hd video encoding and stuff (4GB per process wouldnt be enough here anyways without the program splitting it up more intelligently than it currently does...)
so to utilize the right amount of memory-what is the most ideal OS
Tried taking that ground wire to the back of the board to ground on the 8 pin.. Same..:(
Took wire to back of board and tied it into the 3.3v line and it booted and is running but at stock 2000mhz..
I tried?
Well at least you still have a working board.
Oddly enough ... if you kill it, it may not work.

A bit high I think. But may be my only chance to get some.
Couldn't get ahold of any 478 LV chips, though 771 LV chips are easy to find and very cheap. Not sure how they compare in terms of consumption, but I think the TDP is 25w.
Supply and Demand-I guess. But from what I remember the main "idea" for this chip is the greater good, this is the World Community Grid area right?
Just a ballpark, but the X7DCA-L with 12GB (!) of Reg ECC DDR2, a HD4850 and 2 E5420's (C0) draws below 180W crunching - imagine some E0 L5420's, a PCI GFX, 2 sticks of ram instead of 6 and less/no HDDs and you'd be looking at a VERY low power cruncher, maybe 140-150W loaded. Kicks out around 22-23k/d too so energy efficiency is actually better than a Sossaman. But the parts usually aren't cheap... Unless you can grab mobo and CPUs used for cheap.
Though it lacks the exclusivity. Having a Sossaman just is interesting, it's a platform many people haven't even heard of. And since you can come across them quite cheap and they are far from obsolete it's a better choice for many enthusiasts. For instance, I paid €40 for my X6DLP, €25 for 2x2GB and another €15 for 2x512MB and like €80 for the CPU's. The rest of the parts are just junk I found around the house. Low budget and fun system.
In fact, it currently serves as my main server, replaced a S5370+5110's. It's a very capable system. Do want a smaller case though, something minimalistic as I only have a boot drive in it. (storage is external)
Long story short, Sossaman is a better toy :)
If I didn't have all these crunchers and was a "normal" PC enthusiast I'd have a quad for daily usage and a Sammy for file server/HTPC and would need nothing else.
Is this a good deal ?

I am tempted to go ahead and pick up a pair of those cpus. I could use a file server and a place to store backups. It would alos be put to use crunching of course. Going to give another day or so before I make the call.
Meh, 77 for one is too high. For a pair, yes, but for per cpu.
that guy went up 4 bucks a chip; IDK it is so tempting to snatch every SL9HN/2000 up that comes along but I feel that might be over the acceptable limit.
So you are saying what I got here ain't exlusive enough?

I beg to differ - Dual socket, Octacore, 12GB Ram on a µATX board in a µATX case (LianLi V350) definitely ain't standard
HR-03 3Us.. has been running for around 1 month now.
Other specs:
- SM X7DCA-L mobo, Dual S771, Intel i5100 chipset, µATX ;)
- 2x E5420 C0 Harpertown @ stock :( - tried everything, this mobo ain't gonna OC with FSB333 CPUs, no effing way
- 6x 2GB Kingston DDR2-667 Reg ECC
- HIS HD4850 IceQ4 512MB
- WD Velociraptor 300GB + WD 1TB RE3 drives
- DVD-Burner + IcyDock HotSwap Frame for 3,5" drives (for backups)
All in a LianLi V350 cube case. I call it "ProCube09", indicating it is aimed at the workstation-market - just that it's ultra-portable and pretty silent too (2x 120mm 1000RPM Yate Loon intake fans, 140mm 1000RPM Yate Loon inbside the PSU, 1500RPM 80mm rear exhaust for HDD cooling, all controlled by a T-Balancer BigNG).
Currently pending review by a German magazine, will try to find some more pics showing the whole thing.
Now, back to topic, as you guys seem to think Sammies are better than this :p:
I guess I shouldn't rely on Sammy too much... It's darned stable, but apparantly Boinc screwed up two! weeks ago... It didn't communicate with the WCG servers... I have WUs ready to upload that were due the 27th of February
Oh well... uploading 60WUs now... I might get half of the credit for them... 532 hours of no work though :(
Installing Boincview as we speak.
EDIT: Sigh, all too late and no credit for any of them... 2 weeks wasted.
wouldn't have happened with Boincview ;)
Yeah the HR-01 X are a biatch to install.. but the 3U's are quite ok, especially since you can mount them outside the case with the X7DCA-L.
I have a bid in on a SE7520BB2 mobo. Now to start finding the other parts.

It's not a bad deal:) that's where I got my 3;)
That's the place and do NOT buy these if you have or are going to get the Intel board..
These are for the SM and Tyan boards and are totally different:
http://www.censuspc.com/product-pr-5920.html
Trust me people, I will crunch 24/7 with a Sossaman rig if you can find me a pair of CPU's!
That is the only thing stopping me from getting a Sossaman rig. I can get the board @ $19 + shipping to the UK, I can get memory/GFX/PSU, etc.
Its those damn CPU's, I swear they are like gold dust!
yes, VERY picky with memory.. Wes got some DDR2-533 ECC reg to work but I grabbed some and it wouldn't.
Thats why I always tell people to stick with that Kingston DDR2-400 ECC REG fromm the egg for $36.00 for 2 gig..
Not many people are using as much mem as you are.
So long as you have ENOUGH RAM, it's the CPU that's the bottle-neck. An excess of RAM doesn't make any real difference to crunching times.
Well there is place which sells 1.66ghz sammys with price of 45$
http://www.itxchange.com/itxchange/p...UrlSrc=Website
They have hundreds of them :D
Was hopeing for the 2 Ghz sammys. But it looks like these will be a good start. Now to start buying parts.
Anyone find more stuff on eBay. I may just jump on these... considering the price of a system is equal to a single i7 chip, muchless the RAM and board!
http://oemxs.us/shopping/index.php?p...arget=products
Would that be the right heatsink for the Intel board? I am getting ready to start ordeing parts.
Those are the 1'sQuote:

Yes, BUT that place is VERY high on what they charge for shipping.. First time I bought there they charged me $25.00 to ship two of them.
I'm going there next week to get 6 for CaptMorgan, if you want some let me know and I'll grab and ship to you..
MUCH cheaper this way..;)
This is the backplate for the intel board right?
http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=21884
Yes.
Well after 40 pages I'm still none the wiser on wether Sammys can be overclocked lol
But I do know I want one!:rofl::ROTF::clap::up:
You should change your title to "sossaman dealer" :ROTF:
No, you're not. I know.
The Sossaman pusherman would be a better name for you
I went ahead and ordered the cpus and mobo. Just need to decide on psu and hdd. Will probably run it without a case like my other crunchers.
I am considering that also, where I am going to have, so far, 3 of these setup Crunching exclusively 24 hours. I have a clean relatively dry area in my basement that I was gonna set these up in. How would you go about this? set them on a shelf, or secure all the parts to something; board, psu, and HD?
2 of my cruchers are on tech stations. The other is just sitting on a wire shelf.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371016
Would that psu be good enough, or should I look at something different?
This is the PSU I got
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139008
unfortunately I think it was slightly less when I got it
Try to buy 80 plus supplies, they do help reducing energy.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3.../random007.jpg
These are the SL98Q's I got from itxchange.com, the 1.67/667. Though to be honest I might wait on these as I got a few of the SL9HN's coming and already have 3 boards, 2 PSU's and a bunch of memory:)
This will show my tech level but- I have seen a CPU not encased. sorry for the not so great pics
That one is sold out so I went with the 450. Also ordered some ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820134272 and a hdd. All the parts needed but heat sinks are ordered. Just need to wait on Dave for those.
Maybe I should get his number and bug him a bit.:poke:
If those lines are actually cracks then I seriously doubt those chips will work ever again. :(
http://www.tradeloop.com/broadcast/?bc=639906
Who want to register and make a offer for that guy? :D
I thought SL9HN was 2.0ghz?
Yea me too
http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL9HN.html
something interesting I came across:
"A planned successor, codenamed "Merom MP" was to be a drop-in upgrade to allow Sossaman-based servers to upgrade to 64-bit capability. However, this was abandoned in favour of low-voltage versions of the Woodcrest LV processor leaving the Sossaman at a dead-end with no planned upgrades."
oMg I went to bed and was not able to point my entirely crappy photography. I didn't know what sOLID and D A were talkin about till I looked again-those lines are the reflections off the cpu's of my ceiling! whoops
