First of all it was never sold in any fisical store, and to get mine I actually bought it used from one guy here on xs and had it imported. I hear ya, they gave AMD a bad rap. After 7 months I'm still near stock with what I expected to do near 3G out the box. I just recently flashed to 121708 and bumped the NBV one notch which finally got me stable even at stock. 3 days running at 2.558G clock bump as mutli changes just get cleared back to default. Here is the issue,
How can I get my Phenom over 3.1GHz,
Ive tried various ways upping the FSB or standard FSB and just increasing the multi, but it refuses to load into windows above 3.1Ghz. ANd ive tried upping the voltage to nearly 1.6V on the 'special add' bios setting.
I have the NB core and NB-HT link voltages increased 1 step.
Do I NEED to mess about with the CPU settings(P states etc, dont really understand them)
Do I need more chipset voltage, considering chipset and PWM run at ~50 degrees C.
Are there any settings in the bios, such as link state, unit clumping, etc that will limit my OCing headroom, Id like to think I have a good idea on how to OC, and when OCing the CPU I have downclocked my RAM etc.
I have tried using just two ram sticks in dual channel.
I have also just bought one of those akasa blue chipset coolers as my chipset temps (although smartguardian shows it under the 'system' tab) is like nearly 60 degrees.
any suggestions?

Overclocking the HTT really puts allot of strain on the Mosefts , PWM , CPU , Etc , Etc.....also raise the heat up quite a bit.
ah, well i did try just raising the multiplier (not the CPUFID and DID but the one NOT under the cpu settings tab in the bios, but next to the coolnquiet etc), maybe ill try that.
I never had much luck overclocking this board with the HT Multi compaired to CPU / NB /FID/DID

Ok, to anyone who is looking at replacing the northbridge heatsink on their M2RS... DONT USE THE AKASA COOL BLUE CHIPSET COOLER.
Its totally w@nk. it attaches by way of an adheasive backing.... which just does not work.
instead I took the original heatsink, sanded and polished the bottom of it as it was terribly rough, and replaced the springs that hold it down on the push pins, with oned from biro's as they are stronger...
Hasnt made a huge difference from before, but im using some crappy silicone compound that i had as an emergency fix.

Erm Ok well after a bit of messin about...
1stly installed AOD... which promptly meant I had to reset the bios and killed one of three sticks of ram :( on the upside i can now run the other two at their rated 1066, which i couldnt before (maybe was a dodgy stick?)
BUT no luck going past 3.1 ith AOD.
I have tried playing with the CPU and NB FID's, however on insection of CPUZ, the CPU multi changes, but the northbridge speed shows the same under the spd tab @2000mhz?
whats going on?
I wabt to get NB upto about 2.6Ghz as I hear higher NB = higher clock speed?

For NB overclocking what was voltage use to make it stable? Did they integrate the NB-CPU VID to CPU VID options?

using 26/12/2008, seems to work ok, network detects just fine and I also think it solved my usb write speed problems. Need to double check it though (I thought it was OS related so I never said anything about it)

I'm using DFI 790FX-M2RS + Phenom 9850, and I'm trying to increase the vcore voltage, I did until 1,375V. It seems ok in the BIOS, but no other program recognizes it, neither CPU-Z, Everest... is this normal? Is the vcore really increasing?
Other doubt, I can't even OC to 2.7, is some of my hardware that bad at OC or did I just buy the worst 9850 ever? My PSU is a OCZ StealthXStream 600W.
Do you have amd overdrive installed? When it was installed on mine no matter what I set it to in the bios it would always stay at 1.25 in windows.Quote:

HT Link - 800 (so x4)
and cpu at 266 x 12
and voltages are: cpu special vid + was +250, nb core was 1.350 I think, nb pcie or what ever its called was at 1.250 I think and htvtt was 1.370

As far as volts go...we are about the same.
I dont trust Everest too much when it comes to volts.
I use DFI Smart Guardian to watch those.

Maybe I will try that out...to get cpu speed up.
When u max out on cpu....you may wanna try to get that memory running faster.

OK...........I have installed the 12/26/2008 "Beta" Bios all works fine!
I made a specific point of checking for the "Garbled Text" And "Missing Options" In every single Bios Menu as well as Sub Menu..........No Problem with either is Present!
LAN Works well...........Cool & Quit working properly......NB Frequency Scales Upwards Without Issue.............The Bios is Fine further Testing is needed but None of the Issues that others have posted exists.
That leads me to believe that the Award Flasher is to Blame yet again for allot of Recent Issues in Bios Release.
I have always Downloaded the ZIP.Package and Extracted to a Formatted Floppy With Dr Flash on it and Ran the Manual Syntax Switching Commands
AWDFLASH.EXE R7LDC26.BIN /CKS /PY /SN /CC /CD /CP /LD /QI /WB /CH /E
The /E Switch takes you back to A:\Prompt and I repeat the Flash Once More to make sure the Previous Bios Code is overwritten Fully without incident.
I have Been using this Method since RGone showed it to me 2 years ago and have yet to have a bad flash yet!

I havent used cmos reloaded and havent seen the weird text or missing boot options.

Thanks, that was excatly the problem. After uninstalling it, the sky was blue again :) CPU-Z recognized the increased voltage and it seemed stable at 3.0. However I had to stop my tests because it reached a wooping 80ºC in one minute :eek:Quote:

I read the whole thread (well skim read alot of the non-relavant stuff), thanks for the info, I have aswell read LOADS on the 9500, 9850, 9950 and the dfi m2rs and m2r motherboards aswell as general K10 overclocking guides.
I am running the latest bios that dfi website show.
I have also tried about a million and one bios settings and have changed settings from default, one/two at a time to find out any sources of instability.
Ill update my sig.. been busy and sisnt get round to it.
On the plus, I should be building a Phenom 920 rig soonish for someone and will let you guys know of the outcome, whilst Im on that, anyone know of a cheap 780G mobo that supports the Phenom II's, Im currently tyring to research to see which boards other than my own that have had bios updates to support them.
Thanks alot anyhow, I think my phenom is just limited (or the board is). At the end of the day, 3Ghz is fast enough for any game to be played at max settings.
My future upgrades im looking at are.
1)replace the 2GB Geil Black Dragon with 4GB patriot or corsair dominator.
2)buy second 4870 512
3)replace HD with a faster one, OR buy a cheap RAID card and RAID 0 two of my current ones.

I got a little problem i ran into today and wondered if anyone here has had similar issue with a dfi board.
got my p2 940 today :D, overclocked it upto 3.9 just using the multi, then went back to stock settings to see how it would play by upping the htt, first attempt was only 220*15, it worked but i've now lost the ability to read the temp of each core in everest & core temp. They just say each core is 0'C :shrug:, be nice if it were true but until i changed the stock htt it was working
does this mean i've boinked something on the board?, oh btw its a dfi 790fxb m2rsh.
any help be much appreciated
i heard of that in the case of an asus user today as well... just rely on the cpu temp board readings i'd suggest...
Software needs to have microcode update to read values correctly for new chips.............I would not be to concerned:)

I ran a test with NB at stock speed and volts - only upped the 940 BE multi to 17.5. NB according to SmartGuardian was 66c and CPU was 49c.
I really want to watercool my NB (I have the PWM/NB heatpipe which can take a WB on NB in place of passive cooler) but cannot find one that fits, so I have the Akasa AK-210 40cm fan HS which I will try.

Interesting reading the last couple of posts, especially regarding the NB/PWM temps....i noticed with my 790fx-m2r that the temps on the north/PWM were way high while clocking the Phenom 940's i have, really spiking, like up to 85*c, actually burn hot to the 'fingertip' test....back the clock down, shutdown, added a fan right over the scorching hot areas, gots the temps under control, then started again....
prior to the Phenom II going in the rig, i never had problems with this particular area of the board going wacko using 6400+'s....
now I am beginning to wonder if the board is going to fry itself to death PWM wise????....

@ rammsteiner: oddly my chip needs 1,475v for 3,5gig stable... so 3,64gig at 1,5v is kinda sweet spot to me. 3,7 i cannot get stable even with 1,6v...
Looks like i will be Buying an MR2 again for Phen2 as there is no other mobo with the same PCI-E layout & power section.
I will be water cooling the PMW/SB & maybe the NB as i have found some EK water blocks that should fit.

M2R got me tempted again as well, PWM section is quite good. However Gigabyte's newest mobo's seem very nice as well. Looks like on M2RS (SB600) doesn't any settings for CPU-NB voltage. If I want high NB clock I need the k10stat or AOD to increase it. CPU vcore on bios was at 75 mv + and failed prime test in 2 mins with 3 attempts. It seems to last longer with K10stat with CPU vcore @ 1.325 vcore and NB @ 1.375v

As far as Vdroop this Board has none! 1hr OCCT High Priority CPU from start to finish CPU Vcore is Dead flat across the Board 12v . 3.3v , 5v , 5vsb all Flat Line without Fluctuation;)
Found my issue seems my Opti UPS is giving me Issues probably need RMA after 2 years. Plugged PSU Power cord in to Monster Cable Surge Protector and no more Failing Prematurely with same voltage set in Previous 12/26/2008 Beta Bios.
HT scales higher then 1.8ghz now, New layout is Good considering they Provide no documentation on HEX map Out beyond certain Point:rolleyes: kinda really liked setting up cpu/nb OC through HEX but I suppose this is for the best if its going to be a universal Bios Layout across all D.F.I AMD Boards because this will expedite quicker and better Bios Releases due to less mental shifting for the bios engineers from board to board.
Notice same OC same settings in previous 12/26/2008 bios yields allot less Latency compared to this one!
mmh i use % because i'm on cnq and thats what i know about it:
setting 1,35v (auto) + 110,13% should give 1,487. with the 12/26 cpu-z is reading 1,508v, dmm is reading 1,512v
with the 01/16 bios i need 110,29%, should give 1,489v, now cpu-z is 1,504v, dmm is 1,510v, so its less then with 12/26 at one voltage notch lower.
i dont have the time to test right now but i will do, measure what it gives the cpu when 1,3625v are chosen in bios.
Vdroop i must agree i dont have either. Stock plain voltages in OCCT graph, at least vcore....
@olli...........Have you noticed any General NIC Latency increase with New Beta Release? This 1/16/2009 Beta has a hell of allot more Latency in General compared to 12/26/2008 Beta confirmed with Everest Cache & Memory Benchmark:yepp:
I know you are using Vista 64 but do you have dual Boot config with XP32 Bit that you can check on?
Please check Vdimm with DMM as well Please.......These past few Bios Release Really Need the Voltage Tables in Bios Looked into by the Bios Engineers so as much you can bring forward with DMM and submit it to RGone so he can pass it onto Taiwan would be very helpful & Beneficial.
