no have not had the chance too, sadly I'm waiting on the mosfet blocks still, XS member mailed them April 13th and there still not here, going to wait the rest of the week b4 I start to investigate.
hey guys, i have this board (maximus forumla)for a year now, and have 2x1gb corsair xms dominator's (ddr2 800) but i wanna get 2x2gb and im not sure what you guys recommend and if i should get 800, 1000, or 1066, etc. What do you guys recommend, i have a mild overclock of 9x400, keeping my memory 1:1 so just cpu is OC'd 600mhz.
Im thinking either muskin mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model 996599 - Retail
or mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1000 (PC2 8000) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model 996593 - Retail
or CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-8500C5D - Retail
should i stick with w/ 800 or go higher? i wouldnt mind running my fsb higher and getting my cpu @ 4gh or 3.8

Shawn,
Thanks for the quick reply, this may sound stupid but, I have a black & red theme going on with my WC system. Do they make that in a different color or any other ram that is black or red that you could also recommend?
edit:
found the F2-8500CL6D (there red) but timing is 6-6-6-18 :(
I believe these are the same, just a different heat sink.

Might be selling my board and chip soon guys. Just a heads up...
Speaking of memory. Shouldn't I have better speeds then this?

Finally got my beast of a chip at 3.6 prime stable.
It was NB temp causing my issues before. Going with the slower Kingston RAM instead of the Ballistix seems to have kept the NB temp under control.
seem slightly off... heres mine

And, any advice to convert ( i mean ) flash maximus formula to Rampage formula using afudos and one of those bios. The last link posted on first page was to a beta bios 0403 - that's pretty old. Any performance test with those bios ...
It's just download and flash it, or it need to be modded first, or any other thing.
Thanks a lot for your Help

Hey for stable my overclock whit 4X1Gb @1000Mhz i need 1.55v VNB!
I think high this voltage :S
With two modules 2X2Gb necessary lower VNB or same for 4X1Gb ???
i ran my 2x2 @ 1.47.. a little lower then my 4x1 @ 1.51 set in bios which is about 1.55/56 real..
dang i got over night past prime blend at 4.5 with my settings. i fail occt about 1/2 hour in.. i upped the volts a little more to see if i could get occt but temps got to 77 eeeeks, turned it off.. occt is a animal, load temps 10-15 degrees higher then prime blend.. i have played games on the settings @ 4.5 all day long for days with out any crashes or noticeable problems and never see my temps get above 55 on a hot day.. i just went through 10 passes of intel burn test at the 4.38 settings 63/64 degrees no problems but at 4.5 the temps got up to 77 so i shut it off..
Yo guys,
I had some problems with my adi sounddriver soundMAX so deinstalled it.
Does anybody have a good one for my converted Rampage Formula?
Can I use the V610X6480_zip diver?

Yes for my self did some magic back then and i was able to OC with lower Volts.
After the 0902 trip i got issues back in 0803 but with higher volts.
go with the 0803 and i think you will be just fine

Hello, got this problem, the mobo sets vdimm to 1.89V, when i set it 1.80V in bios. If i flash to rampage bios, will it fix this problem? Or will i be able to set lower than 1.8V?
Anybody here with 8GB RAM on this motherboard? I currently have a G.Sill 2x2GB kit and thinking of getting another. What would be the odd running 4x2GB sticks as how the performance compare to 2x2GB? I have my Q6600 @3.6Ghz, will it have any effects on OC capability?
you will not be able to overclock you ram as high, honestly unless you can justify the need for 8GBs ther is no real world benifit in running it
I can get my Dominators to 1121Mhz running 8GB's but the volts on the NB are high... my GSkills will not even run a there rated speed about 1000MHz or so b4 stability issues arrive
board overvolts dimms about .8 volts or so, rampage bios will not resolve this issue
I'm pretty much done with OCing since I got my Q6600 to 3.6Ghz and I'm happy with that. I'm just wondering if I put another 2x2GB sticks in then will it have any effects on stability issue, I know it will put more pressure on the NB and all that but since I'm not gonna touch anything in the BIOS settings, I just wanna know if I can get away with it, btw I don't OC the RAM as I'm using the DDR2-1066.

help! lcd poster says "VGA BIOS" then it will automatically shutdown. I've tried other video cards but the same output displays
what changes if any have you made or has this just started on its own???
See if the card boots in another rig
PSU is 100%?? could be a failing PSU not giving enough juice to the gpu
Bios could be corrupt (doubt it) but you could do a full reset and re flash the bios.
I would look at the psu if this just started and the gpu will boot in another rig
I got this new processor Q9550 (c1) stepping with my Maximus Formula x38.
Can't even boot up with 3.7ghz. I'm not new in overclocking but this is a bit strange to me. sometimes my RAM doesn't post even on its stock frequency with exact voltage, my LCD poster is pausing at "DET DRAM". when I overclock the RAM, let say from 1066mhz to 1133mhz. it will boot up, but not in Windows.
I got feeling that this is some kind of FSB wall for paring this X38 to a 45nm processors. My friend managed to OC his Q9550 (E0) stepping to 4.4ghz stable with Prime95 torture test and 3Dmark benchmarks but he's using P45 chipset.
here are some of my overclocking screenies and links with my previous Q6600.

anyway, back to my problem, is there any way to push the clocks of this Q9550?
Thanks!
Asus Rampage Formula BIOS (using it on a Maximus Formula)
It has the JMicron_JMB36x_Option_ROM_v1.07.04
And Intel_Matrix_Storage_Manager_Option_ROM_v8.7.1007_ ICH10R-DO_wRAID5
I actually don't use the Intel RAID, I bought a real hardware based add-in RAID5 card but thought others might find this useful...
There are no other mods in this BIOS, only the option roms have been replaced...

@necrolyte, flash your mobo to Rampage Formula with bios 802 and enjoy higher fsb speeds by setting CPU Skew Control to 100ps and NB Skew Control to normal. I got 483fsb stable and 496fsb win bootable.
Im having trouble ith this motherboard and a Q6600. Since september last year I have this motherboard and CPU combination running @ 3.5ghz but I upgrded the bios to 0902 last week and have been having prblems since then. So I went back to bios 0803 and put all settings back to default. Then I rebooted and set my OC to the way it was and started Dual Prime95 4 instances.
I had my Q6600 G0 stable @ 3.5ghz with dual prime95 8 hours up until about 2 weeks ago when my machine became unstable. So I thought it was my bios so I upgraded to 0902 but that didnt do anything so I went back to 0803 today and it still wont pass Prime 95 for longer than 15 minutes.

Is this a sign tat my CPU or motherboard is starting to die or is there something wrong with my settings? My CPU reaches 66 celcius after a few minutes. All cores of the CPU stay going except core 3 which fails. I run small FFS test.
i think my bios got corrupted.. not sure but the other day i got det ram when starting up after off all day.. once i finally get it to come on it f1 screens me with stock settings then i can go into bios straight to exit bios and it fires right up like nothing happened.. i tried clearing c-mos, removing battery and also lowering my oc back down to stock.. after i got home today it wouldn't come on. det. ram again. i removed all ram and started with a stick to get it to f1 screened me again so i could get in and out of the bios to get it to start.. i think it is forgetting my memory voltage or something,, i don't know.. stupid thing.. anyone have this happen before? it has been solid for months and months until this.. the only thing that has changed is that we installed crysis and steam a day before it started..
i think i figured it out.. 2 sticks of memory took a dump..
yeah but you'll need to run thoes G-Skills at 1081MHz they will never do 1200MHz other than that it should work just fine
Has anyone used ocz2b1200lv4gk kit together with this mobo?
How good they work together?
Whats the best bios for this motherboard? Im running a Q6600 but the last 3 bioses make my CPU run hot.
Rampage bios 308 is best for bandwidth, 803 is stable and a decent bios
Hello, I wonder if the Asus Rampage Formula goes well with Q9550?
which the maximum FSB with Q9550?
thanks
I call hot 40 celcius idle and 71 celcius 100% load hot. I dont have any way of reading the water temperatures but the rad does get very warm (More than usual) and I am using Real Temp for reading temperatures of the CPU. I might be going back to my Asus Crosshair motherboard soon though.
Also the motherboard has some bad droop. I have the CPU set to 1.425v and in CPUZ its showing 1.408 but when I run Dual prime95 the Voltage drops to 1.385v. Bu when I enable Load Line Calibration the voltage seems to stay the same. With Load Line Calibration turned on the temperatures are hih but with it disabled the temperatures are 4 - 6 degrees celcius lower.
I have been trying to get the CPU stable at 3.5ghz again where it was good with 1.45v and a max temperature of 65 celcius but now the CPU is'nt stable with the same settings.
Are you sure you calibrated real temp properly? Also if its the TJmax is wrong you can change that in Real temp also.
When you dont bother to update your sig how is this my fault??
I read alot of posts in a day its hard to remember everything a simple im running w/e bios and update your sig would be all thats required, regardless of what bios your running the chip is still the same temp so if false numbers are what your after just off set the tjmax to what ever value you wish your chip to run at...
Realtemp and everest will show the same temps when the tjmax is set properly, if you still have a 120 rad on your quad and your still pumping 1.45vcore you might want to grab a 220 as the 120 rad might be a tad weak for teh job, load line calibration is best to leave enabled it is very hard to get cpu stable without it.
This was done on bios 308 with a Q6700 so you should be able to adapt the settings easy

Ok sorry about that. Anyway I have TJ max set to 90 in real temp and its showing 1 degree celcius lower than Everest. I have lowered all the voltages and set load line calibration to enabled. Currently I have the CPU set to 1.4125 in the bios when CPUZ and Everest are showing the CPU voltage to be 1.40v. also the temperatures are about 10 celcius lower. Im not sure if its stable yet because I have the computer running Prime95 small FFS now for about 10 minutes now. Its still running as of now.
Also I have never touched the most of the ram timings except the timings that set it to 5-5-5-15. I am unsure what all those other ram settings do.
Its still failing @ 3.5ghz even when I have the voltage at 1.45 in the bios (but CPUZ and Everest reports 1.42v) Also the temps are staying below 60 celcius now. Im at 3.4ghz stable now with your voltage settings and 58 celcius with 100% load.
Cant do that tonight. I installed windows 7 Build 7264 and its too late in the night to reinstall everything so Ill continue later tomorrow. BTW I used your ram timings and it seems to make things run a lot faster.
the ram timings will help a lot....
Windows 7 will make your rig fly I like it and have been using it 24/7 since the RC was launched..dont be too concerned with running 1.50vcore on that chip as long as your temps stay in check the cpu will be fine, depending on what IC's you have on your cell shock that ram will do amazing things and will be alot of fun tweaking it to the maximum.
keep us posted on your results
I dont have anything installed in windows 7 but I am pretty sure I have the CPU on its limit until I change my watercooling kir. I can get it to post with 438 x 9 1.5v bios but it wont boot into windows. 420x9 wont boot into. I now have it @ 3.6ghz with 1.4875v in bios showing 1.47v with everest and CPUz running 100% @ 64 celcius.
I dare not push the CPU any further because my watercooling kit isnt up to it. Im planning on having a watercooling kit built into a case for me ASAP with a 240rad for the CPU. Even at that I think I have hit the limit of the CPU. My Q6600 G0 has always needed a lot of juice to OC.
Going to leave Prime95 run overnight and see if its stable @ 3.6ghz. Its 1am here so im off to bed. Will report back tomorrow.
BTW Would it be a good idea to buy a Q9650?
PS. I have been using indows 7 since 6801. Have installed many leaked builds since. 7264 no longer accepts RC keys. Windows 7 is fantastic.
It fails at 3.5ghz still. Im gone back 3.4ghz. Im just goin to have to stick with 3.4ghz for now. It failed @3.6ghz after an hour and I left it run prime95 overnight @3.5ghz but it failed.
post your setup for 3.5GHz maybe your just missing something
Its the same as the settings you posted but I lowered the voltage in the bios to 1.487. It fails prime95 after an hour with 1.5v
[EDIT] I take it theres very few people with this motherboard now
Most have moved on, I have the board on my shelf in the basement for a spare if I should need it...
Tweaking GTL's might get a 100 or 200 more MHz out of that chip but you'll need to decide if its worth the effort..X38 boards seem to be 45nm quad core limited you will find the odd board that will prove me worng but you wont find many...my Maximus X38 could only run a Q9550 and a Q9650 to 425FSB on any multi, I'll hunt up my old profiles for 3.6GHz and a few other templates to try it might help get you a little higher

i just got this board and paired it with a 8400. i am using the stock cooling. i just want to overclock to a 3.4. can i do that with little problem. if so, can you give me some of the settings for cpu voltage, fsb termination, north bridge, etc. thanks
You will need to change the cooler to be able OC. The stock cooler wont cool the CPU enough when its overclocked.
i think the stock 45nm coolers have no copper in the heat sink like the 65nm coolers have.. since the 45nm cpu runs at lower volts i think they figured they don't need any copper to cool it.. so if you have one laying around from a 65nm cpu with copper, it may work fine for that mild oc. i would just get a decent cooler for it though.. another thing i would do put a fan on the the north bridge heat sink. if it is the se with water block, i removed my water block and made up a regular heat sink with a small fan.. it made a huge difference in temps on my north bridge and in the entire area around it.. including my ram temps.. i am on water on my e8500 and north now so it doesn't have any heat issues other then at 4.5 with my ram at 1141 i fried 2 sticks before i put a fan over them.. i plan on keeping this board for a while.. i am going to try to get a set of g.skill 1200 for it to see how it does and may get a gigabyte ga ep45 to play with. especially after seeing the oc's with lower volts and temps in the gigabyte thread but i don't plan on upgrading to i7 maybe upgrade to a amd and x4 if i do upgrade.. i don't know if i am missing anything by not upgrading but i kind of like this board..
Ok haven't had a RAID setup sense getting did of my two Raptor 74's. So now I have two WD2000JS (200GB SATA) drives. And when I try to enable RAID in the BIOS I can't get past the USB detection of the bootup. I think it's hanging before reading SATA drives. Am I doing something wrong?
It fited perfectly between the cpu cooler and the video card after I sealed it with plastic foam to absorb vibrations.

how do you like those g.skills? i have been thinking about picking up the 2x2GB pc9600 to try out..
i was tossing up the two, the ocz 9600 are out of stock and after reading the elpida graveyard thread i wonder if those blades have the same elpida chips?? maybe wait and see if anyone reports any dead ones or hope the g.skills come down in price like everything does right after i buy it..
hey guys,
Its been a while since i was last on. Had some issues resting my password after forgetting it...
Anyways i am still playing around with this board.
I have a goal of taking the cpu to 4Ghz~ with the memory at 1200Mhz, yet still remaining stable.
It seems that after about 400mhz FSB, that i need to start droping my memory speed down to be able to boot.
I was wondering what steps i should take to get my north bridge capable to handle the same memory speed at FSB speeds higher than 400MHZ.
I have test the system with Intel Burn test at the higher FSB/lower Memory speed and Intel burn test says it passes, i would just like to run the memory at the speeds it rated at.
System is in sig.
I am running 533 mhz FSB with 4 sticks of kingston hyperx pc8500 cl 5 mem.
i'm using 8 multiplier so that gives me 8*533= 4264 mhz.
Using rampage bios 0601
Here is my everest mem benchmark:

I am trying to further OC my Q6600 on this board (fine tuning settings at 3.52 ghz now), and got some questions:
1) If I lower the ram fsb strap from 400 to 333 mhz, do that put less strain on the nb? And if so can I lower the volt a bit? It looks to me NB temps is lower when running 333 strap...
2) What is a safe 24/7 OC of a q9550 on this board?
3) Anyone have a odd temp read from nb/sb on this board with everest v4? Not tried v5 yet. The earlier version I had it said about 45 degrees C, after I changed to a newer version it says usually 50+, and when OCing OCCT testing close to 60 C.

4) Is there a problem running the Ballistix 2x2gb 8500 set in command rate 1 on this board?.. If not what settings are adviced?

I found this on asus boards from a guy there, is it correct?

Maximus Formula needs stock 1.25 voltage on NB to run 2 x 1GB DDR2 800 at 4-4-4-12 timings and needs 1.45 volts to run 4 x 1 GB DDR2 800 at 4-4-4-12.
When you set DDR2 800 at 5-5-5-15 at 2.2 volts, its more likely that you get errors because of unneeded voltage. DDR2 800 5-5-5-15 doesn't need 2.2 volts at all. It will work better (and more likely flawlessly) with about 1.9-2.0 volts or even lower.
I.E. never set voltage more than needed on RAM modules, otherwise it is the best way for errors and system instabilities.
Also Crusial Ballistix uses Micron D9 memory modules, which can work at 3-3-3-8/9 at DDR2 800 and 4-4-4-12/15 at DDR2-1066 flawlessly, so try to tighten your timings a bit more.
I have tested myself OCZ Reaper HPC PC-8500 and Crucial Balistixs on my Maximus Formula (both Micron D9s) and they worked flawlessly with correct voltage and correct settings.

i think they are not supported by the mobo and many people had issues with the newer crucial ram.... my crucial double sided 4x1 8500's ran error free at rated specs and volts.. they ran at 1141 for about 4 months then i water cooled the cpu and nb and didn't put a fan back over them and fried 2 sticks.. my nb had a fan that was offset a little and it cooled the memory.. now i only have 2 sticks in with a fan over them still running.. i tried 4,4,4,12 - 4,4,4,15 and i couldn't get them to be error free.. 5,5,5,15 ran error free at 1066 with rated volts but as soon as i started overclocking them i had to go to 5,5,5,18 at rated volts to get them to not error.. it could have been me being a rookie and or other settings like ai/performance level stuff but i tried..
Crucial ram and the Maximus are not compatible this topic has been beaten to death, also OCZ is not the best choice fort his board...I know its a long thread but there is a search button.
60c for your NB is not a good thing, you should look and remounting the NB heatsink with some better TIM, and no one can cay what volts your NB needs every board will be different depending on FSB ,divider and ram speed so wherever you got that info you should toss it out...
Right now I am trying to get my current rig 100% stable, but the problem is the NB it looks like. I have to run 1.51volt in bios/1.54volt in everest, and the NB gets very hot (everest says close to 60 C under heavy load and hot inside but dont know if I can trust it, see above for more info about this), and it looks like that is the reason for hangups.
The FSB is set to 400 strap, ram is running at 880 at 5-5-5-15. In OCCT is stable, normal PI has been stable at all clocks, extremesystems PI is unstable and has been so for all OCs over 3.2ghz I have tried, CoD4 is stable but after 3-4 hours of Lotro (it stresses the NB ALOT) it hang. I uped the CPU volt to 1.45625 and rest of the night it was stable, but also it got colder in the room so not easy to say if it really helped or not.
What I need to know is what stresses the NB the most? Do low ram timings stress it more the high? Do the strap to FSB mzh have impact, will 333 stress it less then 400 strap? etc... I need to stress the NB as little as I can without going down too much in OC.
If I have to start to refit the chipset coolers etc to get it to be stable, I am considering jumping over to a i7 or Phenom II rig...
The machine has been rock solid at 3.2ghz for about 19 months at low volts all over. It boggles me uping the fsb just 40mzh (400 -> 440) should make it soo much harder to get it stable.
Can it be the ram that for some reason create these problems? Can they cause the NB to 'overheat'?..

Your overclock is a modest one and running 1:1 should not tax the NB to hard.
I would run the ram through 3 passes of memtest on your current overclock to rule out bad dimms if you get errors try stock speed settings and re test.
If your still running bios 401 might I suggest running something a little more recent
