I would try RF 0802 BIOS
Does the 802 Bios support 45nm CPUs? I have the Max Formula SE mobo only
->Muya: Bios 802 is a Rampage Formula bios... You have to do the Rampage conversion.
BTW, I try this bios & It brings me some odd stuff (USB Disappear, unstable, ...) I'm going back to 701.
:( Even with the bios 701, I can't have any USB in Vista's session... I had to reinstal Vista & it seems to be ok now.
Flash modded to RF.
After hours of trying. Seems my mobo cannot go higher than 425 Mhz on the FSB ie load into Vista and OCCT for a few hours....hit the wall I suppose at this fsb.
The CPU can be booted at 450mhz/440MHz/430MHz...but just cannot load Vista. SO 425Mhz it is, max OC 3825 MHz!
for 3825MHz
Bios Set Everest
vcore = 1.275v 1.27v
PLL = 1.58v 1.6v
FSBT = 1.36v 1.3v
NB = 1.58v 1.55v
I even tried over the top voltage for 450 etc....nada!
I'm having trouble getting a stable (undervolted) 24/7 setting.
specs:
E8400
4x1GB Crucial Ballistix (micron) PC8500
Maximus Formula SE (Bios: RF 0403)
This settings run Orthos stable. The problem is however that I get a DET DRAM error at coldstart. :(

Agreed up the vNB
Anyone have a good settings list for a starting point for high FSB DICE benching? I just got a Maximus Formula for my first DICE/phase runs to learn the ropes and not be worried if I fry the board.
I'm looking hopefully for ~560 FSB with an E8500 (or E8400)
Just dont know where to start on this board, my previous boards have had no issues doing that sort of FSB with little tweaking and what I'm finding right now is that it will take more knowledge of the Asus BIOS than I have a full understanding of

I bet I can overclock that cpu past that fsb on that board; sorry, I don't want to sound like a smartass or anything, but 425 fsb is too low, even for a quad on that board.
Still struggling with FSB over 530 or so, not going to be a good DICE learning board if I can hit higher clocks on water or air on a budget P35 :p:
I had good luck with the ASUS 9800-GT on this mobo a year ago. I want to put it back in service and wanted to get an idea of it is worth getting another 512mb 9800-GT or if an older HD 3870 on GDDR4 would still be be better bang for the buck at todays prices? Is the 4850 much better then both, even on GDDR3? (comparing all at 512mb).

1. Noticed the FSBT(VTT) will default to 2.00v after Hard Reset/Reboot related to Crash/Freeze
2. 442FSB is fine, stable 100%...I move it to 444mhz and the System completely powers off....3 sec delay...and then powers up almost as if I changed dividers...even though all I did was move to 444mhz which pushed the Ram to 1066. Can anyone explain this? After the complete power off, it comes back unstable/freezes in prime/system.

When i go above 430 MHz FSB, even if I set NB to above 1.61v, and fsbt to above 1.4v, CPUPLL to above 1.6...no joy. This is with multiplier at 7, I was trying to ascertain the fsb wall. At fsb above 430mhz, my comp boots but, when it tries to load Vista, it freezes....

Why does the System do a Hard power down (pause), then Power back up when I increase the FSB from 442 to 443 in the Bios and Hit F10 Save and Restart?
If I increase from 440 to 442, the system simply restarts, with no Power loss/Power down. Generally, the stability is much better because of the constant power to all the components, caps, etc...
If I increase from 442 to 443 or 444, Hit F10 to restart, the System will completely Shutdown, and then Powers Up similar to what happens if you change the Divider in the Bios and F10 to restart.
4.0ghz is possible with this Gem of a Chip, but I agree about this Board being janky with 45nm Quads, I've seen "Machine Check Exception" BSOD a couple of times, never saw that with the Wolfdale.
What I didn't like were the voltage amounts needed to be stable at 4.0ghz vs. 3.9ghz at substantially lower voltage inputs.

Yeah thats a tough read, had to put it down a couple of times to keep my head on straight lol. The article was written over 1 year ago early in the 45nm Fab for Extreme/Non Extreme edition CPU's, having since matured that process during that time.
Bottomline: I just bought a MaxII Formula so I'm done with the wall hopping act on this board. Last upgrade before I wait for 32nm fabs to come out to upgrade to i7.;)
EDIT @ 02-23; Why the ignore? I pull over to ansewer questions for the foum.
Can I get a feedback on the various graphics card builders you gamers and or overclockers use and a brief or detailed reason for your choice when using on this ASUS x38 and or X48 mobo?
I'm looking for input on such builders as Sparkle, Apollo, Zotec, Saphire, Galaxy & Palit as far as anything in general.
I am also interested in reasons for choices of the big names like ASUS v/s Gigabyte, nVidia, MSI, LeadTeck XFX, EVGA, BFG and so on.
What brands are best chosen for what GPU chip (ATI or nVidia)? Which are chosen for either best quality v/s performance on a budget?
Thankx for your time.
Just ordered my MIIF as well. Got fed up with the cheapo UD3P :) At least now I'll be able to see what my temps are reading again, whilst also looking forward to viewing the inside my case each time I open it :)
Shoots across to see Grn and the gang in the appropriate thread ;)

EXCELLENT!!!
Another member
Ah haaaaa..... That sheds some light on my situation.
Would any of you guys be able to recommend something for me to read where I could read up on things like this. I've pounded through this whole thread in a quest to get my system stable on a 24hr prime run but I either have to crank the hell out of my voltages or settle for a system that is stable for a number of hours but not 24 (this is the route I chose......out of frustration).
Perhaps it's just my cpu and/or motherboard but my money's on user error. ;)
thanks
Mike
After experiencing some issues with a process named aacenter.exe from ASUS AASP folder. I stopped the process and then moved it for testing since I could get no help on what to do about it. Now I have al kinds of issues with ACPI suspend modes especially simple S3/S4 resume. How do we fix or reinstall correct ACPI for this mobo? I see an ATK fix on Windows downloads but it cannot install. In fact it has never installed and keeps saying failed since new VISTA install.
Prior to this, OC was nice and smooth and full ACPI worked in BIOS v1207 be it slow that it was, but it worked.
AmI looking at a new install just to fix? When and if I do, do I leave out the ASUS ProbeII or any other ASUS app that places the AASP folder and aacenter file in system?
aacenter is a dirty thing, this is what I did to resolve the issue, I posted this on page 221
Start > run >type regedit>press crtl +f> type aacenter.
set the value to zero, then delete the file, reboot. AACenter is now removed.
Then install updated NB driver and SB driver, this should resolve any issues.
I did not have to do a clean install after this
Hello All:
Been a lurker here forever and a member for almost a year but this is my first post. :) I just wanted to start by saying what a great community, I've learned a lot here.
Well, here's my issue:
Can't seem to post my brand spanking new q9650 at 4ghz (a couple of times I've gotten to right before Windows boots but that's it). With this setup and these settings, I should at least be able to boot into Vista to stability test. I've kept roughly the same settings and have slowly increased the vcore from 1.29375 to 1.34375 (should at least boot at that voltage). CPU VID is: 1.2375. Here are my BIOS settings:

Strange issue you have...
first pull 2 sticks and run 4GBs for the moment
Try the 333 strap runing 1080MHZ ram @ 450x9
Your NB volts are excessively high for that clock, 1.47-1.51should work for 450FSB. Enable Load line it will reduce vdroop and help stabilize the chip.
Disable these....

Vanderpool Technology :
Hey Grnfinger:
Thanks for the info. I'll try yanking those two modules and make the suggested changes.
Venderpool technology is kind of necessary since I run vmware quite a bit and I had enabled CPU TM function because I was being so aggressive with the voltages.
If these settings don't work correctly, I'm going to flash to the 802 Beta Rampage Formula BIOS.
Running out to visit dad in the hospital so I'll be playing mad-scientist tonight when I return. :D
Before I even get started, thanks to mikeyakame, I have a much better understanding of clock skews and their importance after reading his guide. Also, thanks to ericeod for pointing me in the direction of the read. One more thanks to Grnfinger for his input up until now. Along with the pencil mod, I'm going to try the 333mhz strap at 1080 and bump down the voltage of the nb.
Here's where things stand. I'll start with the BIOS settings and then I'll go into what's going on. (I've flashed to the Rampage Formula, 0802 Beta)

I initially tried these exact settings at 450fsb and couldn't get into Windows. When I bumped it down to 445fsb, I booted into the OS successfully (let's hope 450fsb is a fence and not a wall). I expected errors pretty fast since with only 5mhz more I couldn't boot but I wound up running stable under load for 9 1/2 - 10 hours or so. I also ran SuperPi to 1M (its in the screenie, just under 12 seconds), ran Vantage, 3D06 and moved around about 100gb's of data - all without incident. Then I decided to try and image C just for shoots and haha's (good thing I have a clean image already).
This is when I got the hard lock-up. :(
I restarted and this time I got stuck at OS load (I think it was at the scrollbar). I restarted and upped vCore to 1.36875 (mind you how terrible vdroop is on this board, at 1.36250, I reported as low as 1.27 in the OS), still nothing, this time I got stuck at the logo screen. So I upped vCore again to 1.37500, still no boot, stuck at the splash screen.
A couple of things to note:
I've set vcore to 1.3625 in BIOS but it drops to as low as 1.27 in Windows (gotta love the droop on this board - I don't know why I haven't done the pencil mod - this is one of the first things I'm about to do). I had to disable LLC to get any stability, so no help there. Temps are between 51c-60c on max OrthosX2 load with affinity set appropriately. Stable at 100% load for almost 10 hours before the lockup.
NB set to 1.63 in BIOS and reports as 1.68 in Windows (I need a bunch because I'm running 8gb and I'm trying to find a 24/7 for my rig as is but that's a bit much); this also puts it right at 47c (above that temp AFAIK it starts to loose stability). I'm at 1:1 right now so ram is 890mhz and the Transaction Booster level is set at 10.
Vanderpool Technology is Enabled because I virtualize on this rig quite often and CPU TM is Enabled because I'm shooting for as high as possible vcore.
Here's a quick screen. Oh, and feedback is greatly appreciated at this point as I'm a bit confused by a few things. :welcome:

Just made this thread. http://www.xtremesystems.org/Forums/....php?p=3688585
Looking to get some answers on a single or dual rad just for the VGA. In case anyone know pls let me know. thanks
My MF(Rampage) will be back from RMA soon and sold to a friend. After playing with my MFII I can never look back. My Q6600 is running about 5C cooler cause of lower volts all around, and my Q9550 should be in within a week :)
With that new chip, it's starting to make to itch and get that thing under some water  Would be my first time to do anything watercooled
Ahh watercooling is not so stressfull, its acutally alot of fun once you get a feel for it.
A little common sense and there will be no problems, I just upgraded a few parts so if you want a decent CPU block and a res at reasonable cost I can help you out, I just sold my spare rads and pump but there easily available in the 4sale thread
alright i've searched in here for awhile but didn't find anything. I'm sure my problem is just bios settings related but here goes. Is it normal, when booting, to have to wait for the jmicron controller to detect the IDE hard drives and then have to "press any button to continue" to get into windows? Why do i have to do this every time?
ehh nope not yet but not bad for 2x 4850's, dont worry I'm still working on it.

I've already forgotten the # but I think I need 50...or 100 posts to be able to view the for-sale thread so, could any of you guys give me some ideas what it'd cost to buy everything: decent pump(s), radiator(s), tubing and so forth to cool this mobo, the cpu and a 3870x2 for now or maybe something from the 4800 series down the road, and prob. something to cool the NB and/or SB of the mobo (unless that's just completely unnecessary)
I mean, I know I could spend a friggin grand buying the best of the best all brand new but I'm just trying to get some ideas on how much we're talking here before I go spend 100 hrs reading up on what components to buy.
I've got two pumps, a 120.2 and an EK Supreme that I've just put up for sale on HardwareCanucks, but I'd be willing to ship to the USA as well.
You will need
RAD ---------PA 120.3 $115
CPU Block----Swiftech GT $35
NB Block----------MCW30 $20
Res--------EK or Swiftech $20-40
Tubing----------Primoflex $20 ( for 10 feet)
Pump--------------D4 $40-60
Total $250-290
You can most likely do it for a little less but I wouldnt cheap out on the pump or CPU block.
Try to stay with trusted names
Some will argue the res is not needed and I suppose its true, but it helps to remove air from the system very quickly and would be recommended for your first time.
How is the Maximus Formula with q9550? Currently have one with a q6600 but couldn't pass up getting the q9550 for $60. The q6600 will move to an old p35 board.
I'd like to know on that Q9550 too as far as what are the known good revisions. I had poor luck with my Q9450 on this mobo so I'm moving the 45nm to my RAMPAGE EXTREME mobo. What canI expect out of that core on that mobo as far as FSB or overall overclocking?
Also, am I the only one then who has Vista x64 edition w/ 4g RAM on S4 Hibernate issues? My notebook has the same and all ACPI S3 and S4 works perfectly. On the decktop, it sucks, Ihave to do the reset to get it to detect. And on my MAXIMUS FORMULA SE, I have to put it to sleep (S3) like 3 times for it to stay aslepp in Windows 7 Ultimate beta.
I moved from the Maximus X38 with my Q9550, as I have posted b4 the Maximus X38 is 45nm quad FSB limited
425-435FSB seems to be the max on this chipset, yes there are a few rare chips that go beyond this but I have yet to see many of them.
Tested my Q9650 on the board with same results it would max out at 427FSB on any multi
just flashed to the rampage 0802 bios and it seems to have turned my board into a beast... whats up with my vantage scores?
525x8 stable for hours of 3dbenching so far. on water.
ok so it was a year or more ago since i had my computer overclocked, so i have forgot all settings needed :D
got a maximus formula with newest bios and a e8400 intel that i wanna get to 4 ghz again like a had it before, could anyone give a starting point of the bios settings?
Guys you can use 0803 BIOS, it's on support.asus.com already ;)
yes i stand corrected i am running the 803 bios and not the 802 bios.
i managed to get it bench stable at 4.4GHZ and it put my cpu score up over 40,000... but the thing is.. is that im like 10,000 over the WR on CPU score... whats up with that?
Using the 803 bios, haven't tried any others yet. Changed my q6600 to the q9550 and can't get past 425fsb. It does 8.5x425 with all voltages @ stock, vid is 1.225. It will boot up to 505, but it won't load into Vista at anything past 425. Any suggestions, other then getting a new board?
You could try the 0308 instead of 0803 for those not having the newest processors.
It has better memory latency than any newest bios that that (tREF = 16383T)
Hello people,
I've been reading this thread trying to figure out the memory on this board.
Could not find any post with my kinda hardware or clock speeds.
I've currently have 4.6Ghz stable with these bios settings. (pics below)
But i want more :D
I have been told my memory is holding me back and i need help adjusting the setting for the memory that i have no clue what these settings do.
As you can see most of them are set to auto.
I want 4.7 or 4.8Ghz.
Cooling custom water.
Idle temps are about 25c and load is 62c with IntelBurn. (yes its 18c room temp)
Here are some screen shots of my bios so that maybe some one can help me with some adjustments :)
Specs.
Intel E8600
Asus Rampage Formula
OCZ Reaper PC8500 1066mhz 2x1g/was using PC9200, but could not get to run at rated speeds with the auto settings.
Corsair 750w 60amp rail.
WD 250g SATA with Windows Vista 32bit
XFX 260GTX 192 version water cooled.

OK sorry for the double post.
I just updated bios to latest and greatest and now i cant get it stable at the above settings.
Going to start over and i will be back.
Or you can use 0803 (highly recommended) and use mchbar to load tref on windows startup. See the Rampage Formula thread for my little guide.
NOTE:
Just wanted to give those of you with dead-ended x38 maxforms a heads up that my venerable Rampage Formula x48 (I think it deserves that title - see my sig) is looking for a new home. Got the board new, comes with all accesories, some new, unopened. I really want a forum member to have it. The board currently holds the world record with quads and 8Gbs (unless someone can show me a board that has managed 9x528 fsb with 8GBs of ram; on water no less. Really has the potential to do some real damage on the ORB with 2x 4870 x2s. You can also count on me for help if need be as I've known it for 5 months. Thanks.
@ zucker... could you share your bios settings for the 8400, I have a rampage formula and an 8400 but cant seem to get stable past 479x9 (4.3). as of lastweek im running the 803 bios. I am able to achive 10.3 in 1m super pi. I would like to break 10 , and also get stable at higher speeds seeing as how I have a phase change builder workin on a single stage cooling system for me. Plus I would like to push it further just to see how far i can take it, hopefully with sub ambient temps.
yeah i have done that prior to flashing the bios, ive flashed it about 3 times since i had it, the latest was about a week and a half to 2 weeks ago.
@ zucker i am also interested in that 8600@7.5, is that on liquid nitrogen? or maybe u meant 5.7 (600x9.5=5.7)
i tried it didnt seem to help, i can boot into windows up to 550fsb but i have to put the multiplier down to 7 or it wont even make it to windows without crashing. I can reach high fsb without a problem it just keeping it stable is where im having trouble's.
489FSB Stable, This with with the Maximus X38 board, but the settings should play well on the Rampage.

Set REF Cycle Time to 55 or higher.
Up your dram volts to 2.1
set TREF to AUTO for 52.
Your fsbt may be a bit high - 1.30 should do for 500 FSB.
Set NB skew to = Normal (bios 803)
CPU core volts seem high for those clocks. What are all your temp readings?
I suggest you set AiClock Twister to stronger, for starts, moving one notch down when you fail ram-related benches.
That's all for now.
Hey, all! How is everyone? I just got a pair of OCZ Vertexes & just thought you might like to see some benches in RAID-0 of Raptors vs. SSD.
LINKY.
Sorry I haven't been around. What's the latest good BIOS for the Rampage hack?
You can check out my benchmarks HERE. I just installed them (RAID-0) today. So far, they are performing superbly. It is so awesome to click on a program & have it immediately come up. I haven't so far run any complicated applications, but I'll keep you posted.
i finally water cooled my maximus se yesterday.. d-tek fusion v2 cpu block, ek s-max nb block, 355 pump, ek-ddc x-top and tripple rad.. the temps are nice at 4.0 compaired to being on air on those settings. the oc is a little tricky over 4.3 for me still. i have never messed with setting much over 4.0 on air... seams to be stable at 4.3 at 1.31 cpu and 1.22 fsbt.. right around 50 load temps. i got it to post 475x9.5 with 1.38 cpu and 1.26 fsbt but failed after about a hour of testing.. still playing.. and working on new buggy stuff... i noticed is after removing my e8500 and re installing with water cooling my temp sensors are stuck at 36 and 38.. before they would start up at around 27 29 so i think they are sticky arfter re installing it..http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/5199/img0017s.jpg
i keep dropping #0 core on prime blend.. 460x9.5.. 4.38 started at cpu 133 real and vtt 1.22-3 real worked up to cpu 1.36 real vtt 1.26 real.. llc enabled.. still testing.. i think i am getting closer as it makes it longer each time.. the load temps are starting to get up there though.. 54, 55.. still 8- 10 lower then on air at 4.0. the nb is about 15-18 lower now..
thanks,, i think i got it.. re seated my ram, upped volts a little more turned it on, fell asleep and woke up still going no errors.. a little over 7 hours.. 9.5x460, strap 333, pci 100, dram freq, 1105, 2t, timing 5,5,5,18, auto on the rest for now, static read enabled, ai strong, trans booster disabled, relax 0, cpu 1.39375 bios, real 1.376, pll 1.50 bios, real 1.632, nb 1.51 bios, real 1.552, dram 2.08 bios, real 2.208, fsbt 1.36 bios, real 1.296, south bridge 1.075 bios, real 1.104, llc enabled, cpu gtl .63x, nb gtl .67x, ddr2 a auto, ddr2 b auto, ddr2 controller ddr2 ref, cpu spread disabled, pcie spread disabled.. temp hit 57 on #0 and 56 on #1.. i think i am happy for now.. i have tested my ram at those volts, either 400 or 333 strap well over that frequency before the water cooling. i have a pretty good feeling it's prime.. going to do a 3d06 run and see what it does on that. at 4.10 it ran a 21.9k so lets see..
Hi. Totally unrelated, but here's a picture of the latest shuttle launch from my front lawn in Tampa. Please don't ban me for this. I've had a lot to drink & this is my first offense.

Okay. Now I deserve to be banned.
But here's the separation of the boosters:

My wife has some students over & I've been expelled from the living room. I'm extremely bored. Sorry.
***EDIT: Nikon D40X with a 70-300mm on ISO 400 with a 1 second exposure time.
NICE, that would be killer to have that as a view in your backyard!!!!
yeah that is pretty neat.. the cooliest thing i have seen all day.. did you feel it when it took off? as for the se.. i am having a little harder time getting 4.5.. i tried going up a little on pll, cpu and fsbt from where they are at the 4.38 setting in the above post.. i tried this,, cpu 1.39 and 1.40 real, fsbt 1.32 real, pll 1.64 real. just a bump or two more then before in bios.. i am wondering how much volts/heat the cpu can take.. at those settings the temps were 59-60.. still a little lower then it was on air but core #1 failed prime blend, test 2 on the second pass a couple times.. before i got the right combo for 4.3 core #0 was failing the same way... kind of wondering if i should push a little more volts or be happy with what i got.. vid on cpu is 1.25 so i think it may not be a very good clocker for volts.. at 4.3 we have been playing games since my last post pretty much non stop and it screams.. my 12 year old son says it is so smooth.. he's pro at ut2k4, been playing it since he was about 7.. pwn's me.. i have to turn off crossfire in that game and just run one hd4870 because the screen is all tore up when running both.. i am pretty happy with 4.3 but still wondering a little because i have never even been here before and stable..
I ran my E8400 at 4.3 for 24/7 use, I would think that 8500 of your could do 4.4 with a little tweaking.
This was on a Maximus Formulat bios but if your running a Rampage bios the settings are easily adapted

when i was at 420x9.5 on air stable this is what i used for volts with loadline calibration disabled.. vcore 1.26875 bios-1.232 real.. cpu pll 1.50 bios-1.623 real.. fsbt 1.30 bios-1.232 real.. south bridge 1.050 bios-1.088 real.. nb 1.51 bios-1.552.. that is all it needed at 4.0.. my nb volts needed that using 4x1 ram.. i couldn't run it any lower then 1.47 in bios or it would cause problems..
Hi, New bios ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/so...rmula-0902.zip out today, not tried it yet...
Chris
thanks for teh info
Cory, fired up the RF yet?
Any release notes on that bios?
