OK I now have an E4300, and that isn't performing great either. Best I can manage (2+ hours stable in Prime95) is:

9 x 284 = 2.56GHz.

290 already hangs after the BIOS "Dual Channel" display. I get this same hang up to ~333 though, after that I just get a blank screen, so I suspect the CPU can go much higher (and most people are getting way better OCs on it).

Like with my 805D, nothing helps - slowing memory timings/flexibilty on, AGP/memory voltage high, with sync/async, PCI-E at 100 or 114+, disabling just about everything, removing all PCI cards etc.

I also tried all available BIOS' (latest is now 1.40), no change. However, any BIOS after 1.10 also removes the Speedstep and Thermal Throttling options completely, and of course the fan speed option no longer works, so this board is looking worse all the time.

I've only got an Antec NeoHE 430W PSU, but that was fine on the 805D (on P5P800SE), but that also runs much worse on the 4Core. Disconnecting all my 12V loads (HDs, opticals, fan & cathode) is exactly the same so I don't think it's the PSU.

At this point I'd have to say the 4CoreDual is a piece of junk. Anybody have any ideas what else to try _before_ I start volt modding?

If you want over 300FSB just pencil volt mod.
Slipstreem is cruising with 315FSB.

Your v-mods took it to 315FSB. I took VNB up to 1.65V and Vagp up to 1.8V. These are both the highest values normally given in a true overclocking BIOS where you could tweak such things. I feel 100% safe with these voltages.

As the E4300 has a multiplier of x9, that's a CPU speed of. My DDR500 RAM runs at DDR472. This machine really flies!

I think it would be fair to say that the majority of boards should make at least 300FSB with these voltages. 300x9=2.7GHz. That would also conveniently take your DDR400 memory to exactly DDR400 when the BIOS is set to 'DDR333'.

Looking forward to the E4400. 315x10=?. Mwahahahahaha! :slobber: :slobber:

OK, I did both Vagp & Vnb pencils yesterday. The layout on the 4Core is exactly as shown in the mod thread pic (including the component numbers), only I was reading slightly different values for both resistors (that's with the PSU switched off but still grounded):

Vnb: 950 ohms
Vagp: 1.96 kohms

I took Vnb up to 1.5V (~850 ohms) - it took me past the BIOS hang for another 5 FSB, but it would usually just reset within seconds of booting into XP.

I then raised Vagp to 1.69V (1.84kohms) - not only did that get me up to 305 (from my original 284), but it's been 11hours dual-prime stable now! My hunch is that Vagp has far more impact on stability than Vnb on this board.

I'm still hanging the BIOS at 310, so the next thing is to up Vcore - silver paint at the ready, I'll post results later. Strange though that 305 is totally stable, yet 310 won't even POST :confused: .

... so I then found a post where somebody substituted silver paint with aluminium tape (sticky on one side, conductive on the other), and also recomended insulating all affected CPU pins on the CPU side (probably not needed on the Core2's, but hey). I had some so I did precisely that:

E4300, marked 1.35V (max) on the box, read as 1.27-1.29 in BIOS:

First insulation tape, then aluminium tape for 1.45V (reads ~1.4V):

At first this didn't boot at all! Turns out that it just needed the usual two failed boots before it would reset to 1.8Ghz - after that it was fine.

... except it didn't seem to help at all. So I messed around with my resistors again, couldn't get the NB any higher with my pencil, in the end decided to leave them (close to) were they were. Now, for some reason, it POSTs and seems prime-dual stable at 310 :) - go figure. But even 312 hangs at the BIOS.

The real champ is my DDR2-533 memory, overclocking to ~310 (1:1) at stock timings without any extra voltage. It was the cheapest I could find 2nd-hand and actually branded for Apples :clap:.

So, I think I'm done here, it's a good result. I'm pretty sure the CPU can go much higher on the right board, maybe that'll be my next upgrade. For now thanks to everyone who contributed to make it all possible, and good luck to those about to try :toast:.

Yep, I have an 8cm fan blowing partly on the NB, partly on my passively-cooled Nv 6800. Saying that, the nb heatsink doesn't seem to get very warm :confused: (need to check under load again).

BTW, one core failed prime after about 2 hours - probably safe enough for general use, I guess 305-308 could go flat out.

Oh yeah! I've been running RM Clock to enable SpeedStep - for me it only actually drops the multiplier if C1E is enabled. But after doing the Vcore mod, I heard this really weird intermittent high-pitched whine that I couldn't explain. It's actually coming from the CPU, but only if C1E is enabled!

No idea what's going on there, I guess changing Vcore screwed the SpeedStep voltages somehow :eek: ? But why would it create audible noise?? I can record it if anyone's interested.

I think your overclock is achieved able with CPU stock voltage.;)

This would allow you to reverse the pin volt mod to enable C1E with no audible noise hopefully. :)

I think you're right, haven't had time to try it yet but I will.

One simple question.
Can I make on this asrock mod for cpu voltage? It will be more comfortable for me - v-core boost is IMO too troublesome.

Just wanted to chime and say I am loving this board. Dirt cheap and stable for me. I even halfway killed the thing, but only lost a IDE channel from my stupidity!

I want to maybe throw out a suggestion for people using the e4300 to see if it you can gain higher FSB's with a different strap.

Try this BSEL mod to fool the mobo into thinking you have 1066 CPU. It worked wonderfully for me.

BSEL1 to VSS

My e4300 boots at 2.4GHz with no fiddling of the bios.

There is a pin mod (for the 800FSB CPU’s) that makes your CPU boot at 1066FSB default instead of the 800FSB.
This should help the Overclock the E4300 a bit.

You cannot lock the memory speed on this motherboard, but you can manually change the divider to bring the memory speed back down when you overclock.

The dividers aren't expressed as dividers in the BIOS. They are expressed as DDR speeds which can be a little confusing.

I'll try to explain:

At 200MHz FSB (quad-pumped 800MHz for an E4300), the motherboard will give the following memory speeds for its stated 'DDR' speeds when used with DDR memory...

'DDR400' = 1:1 = 200MHz = DDR400,
'DDR333' = 6:5 = 166.7MHz = DDR333,
'DDR266' = 3:2 = 133.3MHz = DDR266.

These dividers hold true until the we reach an FSB of 240MHz where a new set of dividers are invoked as shown below. Now, suppose that we take the FSB straight up to the level that most unmodified Dual-VSTA motherboards will reach. This seems to be around 290MHz. The dividers and memory speeds will then be as follows...

'DDR400' = 4:3 = 217.5MHz = DDR435,
'DDR333' = 8:5 = 181.25MHz = DDR362.5,
'DDR266' = 2:1 = 145MHz = DDR290.

These new dividers make perfect sense when you consider that at an FSB of 266MHz, the memory speeds are actually DDR400, DDR333 and DDR266 again. This gives the correct memory speeds for processors running at a quad-pumped speed of 1066MHz, ie, the E6300, etc.

So, we don't have precise control over the memory speed achieved for a given FSB, but we can predict what it will be and select the appropriate 'DDR' setting in the BIOS for a given FSB.

Good DDR memory with slackened timings should manage at 290MHz FSB on the new dividers. If it doesn't, then knock the setting in the BIOS down to the 'DDR' setting below the one that matches your memory's actual DDR speed and try tighter timings to compensate for the underclock.

I hope this makes sense."


In my case i have fsb 290 async, DDR's are in 200Mhz without flexibility, and cpu-z says that my memory run in ~417Mhz with 5/4 divider, and that seem to be quite a max with my ValueRam's (Dual C, 1T, 3-3-3-8).

A word of caution to everybody out there who is, or is thinking of, dramatically increasing the 1.35v "Vnb" identified by Mallet at Vr-zone ( http://forums.vr-zone.com/showpost.p...76&postcount=1 ) ----> if the 4CoreDual-VSTA is just a 775Dual-Vista with a proper Quad Core Kentsfield capability, then I have just checked a 4CoreDual-VSTA mobo and found that the said Vnb voltage is actually the CPU Vtt supply. And the 4CoreDual-VSTA default Vtt of 1.35v would already be considered high for a Core 2, so who knows what is happening to the life expectancy of the CPU with the insane 1.7v or higher levels that some people are trying?

I don't believe much will be gained from increasing the CPU's current Vtt level, however if you are someone who must do it then I recommend limiting your activity to no more than 1.5ish?

Yeah what does that mean? I found a new option in Chipset, it's "Echo TPR Disable" and the options are Disable/AUTO. What is it used for?
