I have the same batch as you and mine runs really hot, I cant do anything with it on air...think I'm gonna sell it.

Even at stock? And you make sure heatsink is installed correctly? My temp at stock speed with underload all cores hover around 54-56. With 21x205 (4.305Ghz), all cores run around 79ish. This is on Scythe Mugen 2. I also have Extreme 120, which should run around the same temp.

WOW!..you are burning those cycles up!:D...NICE GOING!
can you boot at those speeds?..and, if not, what is your max bootable overclock???
darn, i should have bought the biostar x58 board but i opted for the evga x58 classified 760 version...i hope it is kind to me like your biostar has been to you!;)
Yay! I managed to get myself a 3849B028! I placed an order online to make sure I at least get one, but when I got to Micro Center, the one they put aside was C0, so I went to the display glass and asked salesperson to check a few there, first one was another C0, then the second one he got, it's a D0 and B028, exactly what I had in mind to get. The sale is over on the 22nd. I might go back and get a few more of different batch, test them all and keep the one I like, sell the rest.
Well, good news and bad news. The good news first. It is that it actually runs cooler than my other CPU. It defaults to a lower voltage (1.088v vs. 1.160v). I haven't tried overclocking just yet. I will take my time to make it works okay on stock speed first. Well, here comes the bad news. I think I managed to kill my GTX285 in the process. While turning it on for the first time, nothing on the screen. Cleared BIOS, tried again. This time, the screen became filled with artifact everywehere. Turn it off, and turn it on again. Nothing. No signal. Put a different video card in, it works. Put the GTX285 back in, nothing. Nothing. Once, twice, thrice...Put the other video card back in. Works. So, my GTX285 is cold dead. Will have to RMA it now back to EVGA.
Will update with OC later on.
Edit/Add:
An hour and a half later and I'm back. I think it's my board that is limiting my OCing. I get the same OCing result with the new CPU as the old one. So, I'm pretty sure it's just something I'm not doing correctly. Both of these CPUs have high potential of high OCing with the right mobo/memory and expertise like you guys have. Unfortunately, being a newbie, I simply just cannot get the desired OCing experience that you guys can.
Stock speed, underloaded temp goes to 60 (idle @30-32). Best OC I have so far is 21x205 (4.305Ghz) underloade temp is around 85. Idle is 50ish. I'm using MSI Eclipse Plus with BIOS 1.0B25.
I am wondering what these settings will do to the OCing of the CPU or board.
CPU Amplitude Control [800mV]
PCI Express Amplitude Control [800mV]
CPU CLK Skew [Normal]
IOH CLK Skew [Normal]
Is that any benefit to change these settings? If yes, to what number?
mhmm i can get a i920 3850A978 exaclty, it ocs well i see as well...

Haven't done any suicide runs yet, but I have gotten 4.4ghz bench stable. Batch 3849B028

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/7955/capture2u.jpg
cky2k6, what board do you have again? Can you give me a complete voltage rundown of your BIOS? Perhaps I can duplicate your settings and see if mine would be stable at 4.4Ghz as well.
I have an asus r2e, its in my sig. 4.4 isn't stable, it wouldn't last a minute of linx, just enough for a few quick benches. Its set for 1.4 vcore, 1.4 uncore, 1.35 nb, 1.3 sb, and 1.7v ram.
Some 4.5ghz numbers, all I changed was vcore to 1.45 and lowered uncore to 3.65ghz.
http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/8/capture3z.jpg
it also completed an 06 run, this chip seems to have very good 3d stability.
It's strange that it's semi-stable but as soon as your run LinX, it crashes within seconds. By semi-stable, I mean I can run CPU-Z, SuperPI and Everest Benchmark. Under LinX, it's a totally different world.
Just got myself a Xeon 3902A250, so far it does 4.0ghz at stock voltage everything with HT on. Haven't tried it further as i'm currently in China, just did a quick run at the shop. Sounds pretty good, they also had a 3849B507 was debating which one but i've decided for the xeon don't know if i made the right choice :(

Looking good eva. I am thinking the 4/28 BIOS is the best so far. I have been having very good luck with the Xeon and the Kingstons. I can push past 2000MHz RAM, but 201*21 is a nice "sweet spot" for 24/7 running. It's just so damned stable and reliable!
Nice going PcCI2iminal, 5 Ghz is tough to get under any conditions, congrats!

I am currently working on my W3540 on the classified. So far things look good(fingers crossed) with my cl7 doms on it. It seems to work with exactly the same settings on the classified as my 920,except for the vdimm now @ 1.65.This was all on air as I am planning to water some time next month.
BTW, who says 4GHZ uncore is tough on air:p:
out of this 2 D0s, which one should I keep?
3849A832
3844A934
Haven't started my i7 build yet, but I am thinking of pairing this with
mobo: undecided, but probably the UD4P or a bloodrage (dang pretty)
cooling: air, not sure on this one yet, but I can get a hand on the Xigmatek DK for reasonable price (my budget here is $50 max)
RAM: got a deal on the corsair xms3 (8-8-8-24) ==> good??
~~ i think those 3 parts are the ones important for OC capability, I can list out the rest if necessary
target: OC of ~3.9-4.2
3849A832 seems to be almost on par with the 3845B027 as far I have seen. For example this thread @ the evga forums.
Keep the A832
What are the final words from the guys that have the B028's and B203's? I have the option to buy both, but the B028 is a slightly higher premium, wondering if its worth it, or do these 2 batches fair about the same? I need to chech the Denver MC as well to see what they have.
Thanks
If you can only afford one, take the B028, it runs at the same frequency with less voltage. If you can afford two, get both. Both OCs the same, but the B028 just does it with a little voltage than the others, that's all. YMMV, so don't bite me if yours happens to be a little than mine. I'm quite happy with either actually.
Thanks, tough call I guess, but seems that less voltage for the same clock would be more beneficial, since I would be running WCG and F @ H on the system. If I could hit 4-4.2 ghz with no more than 1.3v; I would be happy. My Co's from my little experience only hit 3.8@ 1.3v.
Just found a 3849A832; would this be slightly better than the B028 or B203? Someone above said that the A832 would be equivilent to the B027 which is a great chip to have from what Ive read.
Or better yet; which batch would be of best interest? Thanks
EDIT:Would a xeon w3520 be a better option? not even sure if they are supported my my mobos yet; BloodRage, Biostar Tpower, Gigabyte UD4P
A832 is a good batch they all seem to do the same, I can do (Prime Stable) 4.5ghz HT on 4.6 ht off and 4.2 HT on with 2000mhz mem 7-7-7-20. It can go higher than this if you can keep the temps under control.
Thanks guys; Just have to think if the Xeon is worth the additional cost. I can get the A832 for approx. $265 or the Xeon for $295. I have heard that the xeons may create issues on some mobos. also I do not know if I metioned it already, but I stopped by MC today when I was in Denver (normally 65-70 mi trip from where I live, but was visiting family) and they had NO D0's at all.
I have found a couple members that are selling D0's and on ebay. Found the xenon on ebay too from platinumicro, but not sure of the batch.
I have seen killer results with the xeon, especially with dice or ln2, but I will only be on TRUE or eventually H2o. Damn decisions, or can wait for MC to get D0's in and get one for $215-250 depending on wether or not they have another $200 deal, lol
Does anyone have any experience with batch 3849A772?? only seen this result so far but it looks promising: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=224581
Wow...interest dies down a lot since last week or so.
Of course the 3845B027 batch isn't that bad....
The 5187 Mhz screen shot is included to document the -7C temperature, Vcore was 1.389.

I'm trying to rekindle the love we once shared...please keep it going, shall we? :ROTF:
Okay, so lately has anybody been able to get any earlier batches (3845/3846) from Micro Center? Trend tends to indicate that earlier batches OC better than latter batches. Haven't checked any 920 lately at MC, so I'm not sure what kind of batches they have now comparing to a week ago or earlier.
Does my Asus P6T Deluxe needs any bios update or will it just work out of the box these new D0's?
Right, I didn't realize that when I posted, this was right after my first ever sub-zero run. On that topic, I've found a temp meter, but still haven't found a suitable probe for it, one that goes down to Dry Ice sublimation point (-78C). Anyone know of a source that is relatively cheap?
The other volatges are 1.325 Vtt, and pretty much everything in green in BIOS. My take is that voltage other than Vcore doesn't make much difference with this chip.
Hi peeps another batch check. Iv been offered a 3850A795 920 D0 retail at a pretty good price 2nd hand. The owner has got it up to 4.3Ghz with 1.36v on a Biostar Tpower and air cooling. I can get a new one OEM for alittle more but not sure on batch. As im going watercooling, can i expect that a newer D0 should clock further or should i just grab this one now? I have a UD5.
Cheers Brad.
Well found a 3849A769 D0 going at hardly anymore so went with that as the only result i have found was at nearly 4.5Ghz with 1.38v HT on stable. Hopefully mine will perform close to that.
I picked this one up today at MicroCenter in Tustin, CA I plan on going back and looting the store.. :shoot: I will try to buy as many as I can :D --------> H E R E

picked up a d0 920 slbej // batch 3849A866 at microcenter in NJ last night wondering if anyone has any experience with this batch or if i should return it and look for a more known one?
edit: pack date is 4/07/09
guys I've got a pick of DO's from a local and I'm about to buy it.
is this batch any good #3912A801 ?
IIRC, someone got one of those...unfortunately, I don't rememeber where I have read it and honestly don't remember what's the OCing potential of that batch.
It's the newest batch out there, I believe. You be the first one to try it and let us know how OCable it is. People might flock to find it if it OCs like crazy.
Good luck and keep us posted....
I guess I got one of the worst batches :(
4.0 GHz needs over 1.3 V, bios setting 1.4 and cpu-z reports 1.36 V when stressed. I tried lowering but when I do occt crashes after a few minutes. (no bsod though)
Changed BIOS Settings :
bclk = 200
most of the cpu settings off including turbo (ht still on)
vcore = 1.4 V
qpi/vtt = 1.4 (found some guide that suggested 1.5 but lowered it to 1.4 and it's doing fine, could probably go bit lower still?)
ram multi = 8x (results in 1600 MHz) using 1600 OCZ Reaper
uncore multi = 17x
rest of the voltages are set to auto
Any ideas here?
Batch = 3851A262

I got a 3849B310 (which I haven't heard mentioned), pack date 5/15, so its new? Anyone have any word?
yay? (Rig not build yet and I'm a new OCer so I won't have much of a review for a while)
Stopped by the local Micro Center and checked out a few batch #s...
Here is what they have (all DO SLBEJ):
3849A799
3849A925
3849B018
3850A849
Any of these rings any bells of OCing?
There were also some C0/C1 SLBCHs, but wasn't interested in them...
is the A and B differs anything?
I heard B's are better with C0/C1, is it same with D0's?
I've been pretty happy with my C stepping running @ 3.8Ghz stable on air. What kind of increase can I get with these D0 stepping chips? Am I better off just waiting for some higher clocked chips to come out?
A D0 will give you at least 4Ghz (my does 21x205 on a crappy mobo). But if you are happy with your C1, there is no reason to get a D0. People who get the D0 are the the absolute maniacst of the PC users. They want the absolute best every single time. :ROTF:
In general, yes. But I have read there are A batches that OC like crazy as well (IE: 3849A832). It's a certain batch (whether it's A or B) that are distinguishable among others...that can OC like crazy. It's not every A batch or every B batch, that's why it's so hit and miss. Sometimes you would get a B that would OC like crap. And the same for A batch. There is no garantee unless you can hand pick one that has already provened by someone else. And even that is not a garantee because every chip is different, even if it's the same batch # as what the other users have.
Xeons are also welcome?
