Yes, maybe different FSB has same for you, but not for me. A quick multi change to lower cpu speed @ same FSB and no problem. If it was voltage, setting 1.52 @ lower cpu speed would create same behavior..in my board it does not, ergo it can only be current. As to why the current induces this behavior is the only question, and due to the "EPU" that no other board "HAS" (at least does not install driver for this), I think we can call it case closed, and must await updated driver for "EPU". I didn't spend the last 24 hours on this for nothing, thanks. ;) :lol2:

What are you guys using too cool the SB when WC the NB ?

Picked up this board this weekend and been having no troubles at all for overclocking compaired to my last board the P5N32-E.

I couldn't even get stable at 2.8 GHZ before, now I'm at 3.6GHZ on this board without even looking. Will see if I can squeeze some more

I killed my P5K3 so I ordered this board instead. I was really keen to own the Blitz..but glad I waited:)

Been absorbing as much as possible between changing diapers and feeding the eating machines...lol

Has anyone found any negative issues running DDR2 1066 RAM like the OCZ Platinum on this board? Curious because I snagged 4 GB of that before I even knew I was getting the X38.

wow so i decided to push my q6600 go stepping to see what it could do with this mobo and i am very impressed i got it to 3.7 ghz with 1.5 v to my cpu...im water cooled and it doesnt get above 45c with load...im very impressed with this thing and this mobo i love x38 more and more every day!!

i gotta admit that it's a great case and all...BUT...when you stick two dual slot cards in that case with the power supply crowding the secondary card it gets kinda warm. Especially if you run high end cards. if the case was a full tower it would of been perfect! cough cough....Antec Twelve Hundred....

OH SNAP that's a lot of voltage! When i saw that Kinc used 1.96v on his QX9650 i was amazed! and i think Fugger was saying he was using 2.34v on his. That's way too much voltage for the average user. Unless you're gaming with one hand and you're pouring LN2 with the other! :D

3.3v on memory and you're basically asking for dead memory.

Even for guys chasing WR's they usually just drop the memory speed and tighten the timings. I could be wrong but i don't think that they go anywhere near that high of voltage. Again...i could be absolutely wrong.

The max voltage my P5E3 goes to is about 2.78v but with a stock voltage of 1.9 @ 1600MHz i really don't need to go that much higher to hit 1800 or even 2000.

Same thing happened with my PC but I did not have fresh install of windows.
I use Vista X64, and my problem was solved when I removed almost everything that came from mobo´s CD.

it happened to me as well i think it is something to do with the epu program or something like that that is on the dvd...there is an update to it on asus website and it states it can cause keyboards to stop working i didnt try it though...i just reinstalled everything and didnt install that program off the dvd!!

Aha, I´ve gotta take a look on it.
Still Asus Probe 2 dont work with me.

ASUS probe works fine here, vista x64....download the one from the asus ftp.

Just make sure to disable the print spooler service as it seems to have issues with PC Probe II for some reason...that is unless you like to print. :D

yeah, i disable all the cr*p that vista 64 Ultimate has, i have around 29-33 process's running. from the stock 44 and up.............anyone know what TrustedInstaller.exe is??? i googled it, but nothing really about it....except it belongs to MS.

Unfortunately no.got my cpu up to 85c Tjunction, but still not able to overcome the problem. Next I'll try removing the "EPU" driver...but I have things to do today before I get a chance to play on the pc.

CPU Voltage 1.35 might do it, you may need to adjust. Set FSB Term to 1.4v, NB Voltage to 1.49-1.55(whatever makes it stable, start at 1.49v) SB - 1.125v should do it.

Also set CPU GTL Ref - .63x and NB GTL Ref- .63x or .67x whichever lets it boot, then stress test, if you get errors check your voltages this one like my board may need to goto .67x with quad and however much RAM you have.

EPU driver, i didnt know we had to install one??? is it auto installed when you do a fresh format, or do i have to manually install it, because i dont see anything in device manager for EPU????

When you install AISuite from the mobo CD, it asks you to install it prior AISuite installation.

ASUS Maximus Formula, and ASUS Maximus Formula SE use the same driver and BIOS right?

yea all works fine as you recomended. Thanks. Though I have some questions. My memory is Crucal Ballistix 8500 should run at 2.2 so is in BIOS but PC Probe is showing my 2.29 - 2.3 what is that suppose to mean? Any danger? I havent tested memory yet coz of that. Then next thing is I use Everest to monitore temperatures and it shows that CPU temp is 47C though I have 4 more below and they are like 64C each. So which one should i look at during OCing?

Sorry to ask this in this thread, but I'm kind of in a hurry. Is the plain P5E worth it, what are the major differences to the Maximus in terms of overclocking?

I know the BIOS are different and also, they are some minor, minor changes on the boards. Not sure what are the differences between the 2 boards in term of OC and perfromance.

However, since these 2 boards are similar in price and they are both available (at least in Toronto), I do not see any reason to buy the P5E at all.

none.... i have the P5E and its amazing..... i can run my quad at 4gig for benching and 3.6-3.8 24/7. the bios for both boards are now almost identical. the initial bios the board comes with doesnt have as many options as the maximus bios but the update has virtually the same settings as the maximus.... its £70 cheaper than the maximus and if you look under the P5E sticker on the board youll find it is a maximus. its just the lcd poster crap that you dont get and a reset button....

Great mobo really great mobo!
I must put 1,38Vcore to be stable with 1200mhz cas 5 crucial pc8500 with 1000 cas 4 i am quadprime stable with 1.35Vcore hem...why? any idea??? :)
Now i try to put down the Vdimm... for a next lap of quadprime!
So the only bad new about this maximus is NO SLI support!!!!!
Intel why don't u work for a chipset that support scalable link interface??

my temps in my room are around 77-80 degrees F....lol i know i know my computer and tv really put out the heat...my processor idles @ about 36c i could probably increase my multi to 9 and overclock higher i hope this board gets better overclocking than 465 fsb eventually...but i like faster fsb

My board overvolts vDIMM by .08 volts, i.e. 2.02 in BIOS will give 2.1 actual. Actual is going off of BIOS monitoring and Probe software.

Yes overvolt the dimms.... with a tester the real vdimm is about +0.07V but depend about the dimms r installed... with 1,80 from bios u have about 1,87v with tester... so i try to rase down the voltage... ;)

Hmz so Asus Probe is close to accurate:X

i guess i should ask where you're getting your temp reading from? i was using core temp and it's higher then every other program... my 3.825 was 55 or so in a 72 F room on full load and around 28 or so when idle (according to core temp).

i am using everest 4.20 ultimate but ill get core temp and let you know what it says

UPDATE: i cant get core temp to work its not certified drivers and it wont let me load it

i tried probe 2 and it too is much lower then core temp.

Went out to buy milk and bread, came home with a Maximus Formula SE. :shrug:

I had to stop by the computer store anyway... both of the motherboards my brother owns are dying, so I asked about RMAing... then I saw the Maximus box staring at me on the wall. Cheapest I've seen in Canada too, $258. :D

Will be joining you guys in tweaking once I get back to my own place next week. :up:

No. enless you have a fan directly on it, it might work.

What do I use then ? The only thing keeping me from watercooling this board is the SB. If I dont find something, im just stick a fan over the NB and leave it be.

if it fits use it, if not use the other one and put a small fan over it, active cooling will be needed if you use the heatsink only, its wayy too tiny.

I've been waging a holy war with the supplied soundcard. Initially it worked but after installing the ATI Catalyst drivers for my vidcard it stopped working and every attempt at re-installing from the ASUS CD gets a message about my hardware not being supported. I figured what the heck just pick up a Soundblaster because that will be easy . . . WRONG. So . . . a fresh format and reinstall of XP Pro without the daughtercard installed, get all the Catalyst stuff up to snuff for the HD2900Pro vidcard and then add the supplied ADI Soundmax soundcard back onto the board . . . still no go. The ASUS utility on the CD still says "The audio drivers do not support your hardware".

So - from any of you with this mobo and running the supplied soundcard - advice? TIA

Do you have it in the Black PCIE 1x port? If not you made the same mistake I did, it is a proprietary bus specifically for that sound card. If it isnt in that slot, your sound isnt going to work.

Yes it is in that black slot (the most 'north' slot in the mobo). It worked for just a while during my initial install but now it is a real PITA. I had figured I'd get something that would work 'for sure' and tried a X-Fi GamerXtreme from Creative. Hooboy, big mistake; I know Creative dominates the genre but I'd always hated their drivers - that hate, years later, was not misplaced. So I yanked the SB card and did various registry cleaning tricks and finally just decided to do a format/reinstall of XP Pro (just build the system 2 days ago so no big deal). Did the full XP install, the Diamond Sapphire Catalyst install and update to latest drivers and Windows update to install 85 updates. THEN I shutdown, installed the Maximus soundcard, and rebooted.

Now the sound app in Control Panel has ATI HD Audio rear output as it's selection and I can't change it. I'm really wondering if there's a conflict between the various and sundry drivers that ATI installs for the HD2900 and my soundcard for the Maximus. In any case it's been so frustrating that there's a giant do not disturb sign all around my office.

I have the feeling my temps are too high, when I play a game MB goes up to 52C, NB 55 and SB to 60C .. are those temps safe or should I start worring?

I had similar problems, with the installer claiming XP was the wrong version so I reinstalled without SP3 slipstreamed and no problems since. SP3 is fast and everything, but I'd only recommend installing it AFTER everything is installed because so much software refuses to install (and sometimes run) on it, thinking it's the wrong OS! :D :shocked:

If you're running a late model ATi card with sound, your sound will default to that. You have to go into windows control panel and manually select the sound card you want to run. Hope that is the issue.

is that sound any good? will it perform better than something like a $100 creative?

No, its not better than a creative sound card, because all on-board sound cards use your cpu to process sound, x-fi has its own cpu wich is very powerful, but its plagued by mediocre drivers.

Amen to that. I was trying out the X-Fi GamerXtreme (or similar name) and OMFG I quickly remembered why I hadn't bought a Creative product in a long time. Scanned the Creative user forums and found my problems were shared by many without much good news. Followed some different methods to make it work and, after twisting myself into a pretzel, decided it wasn't worth it and I'd instead return it and focus my efforts on making the supplied Maximus sound card to work (which did work briefly after initial install prior to Catalyst install).

I'm not looking for glorious 7.1 sound, I've got a home theatre for that, I just want my computer to make noise through two crappy desktop speakers. Like my crappy AMD nForce (1st gen) mobo with Athlon XP 1800+ does (albeit incredibly slooooowwwlly).

On the positive front, without breaking a sweat, a couple tweaks in the BIOS and my E2160 is running at 3Ghz on air with maybe 1 or 2 degrees increase in temps. Amazing.

Curiously the only audio output option in Control Panel Sound menu is for the HD Audio Rear speakers. Plugging the speaker jack into that hole (or any other one) yields no sound. This is after a fresh format and install of XP Pro - without the sound card in the mobo - then an install of the ATI drivers off the CD Rom then a Windows update then an update to the new 7.1 Catalyst drivers then finally installing the sound card in the mobo and running the install off the Maximus CD.

I'm wondering if I caved to the dark side and went with Vista would this become easier? I've got a box of Bioshock waiting to be loaded and the call of DirectX 10 is like a siren song pulling me towards the rocks.

btw does this board suffer from "RAID / SATA(II) issues "?

You issue is user-error. I have no issues with 2x2900XT's and maximus, I simply changed the default audio from the ATI cards to the SupremeFX2.

And I'l ltell ya why user error...you installed the ATI audio driver, making it the default, and expect windows to be smart enough to find another card?:rofl: :ROTF:


SRy, pls take no offense...Windows is stupid, and you must hold it by the hand and lead it where you want to go. Maybe next time don't install ATi drivers until last?


I had no issue with audio install in either XP or Vista. :up:

Only thing that "concerns" me is that the Dimm is probbly overvolting by 0.07-0.09, but then again u can just "down clock" the volts respective 0.07-0.09.
Is this already known by asus?

im having few trouble with my HD's when ever i boot up sometimes it will recognaise my hd and sometimes it wont...

well i can raid it ... but windows xp installation will get a blue screen. so i can raid them using windows vista...

Typo on my part - I meant to type ADI (not ATI) HD rear audio - you know as in the ADI 1988B 8 channel CODEC that is associated with this card. There are no other sound card drivers installed, ATI or otherwise.

No, I don't expect Windows to be smart at all, I know better than that.

Ah. that changes things a bit lol. However, as you said, it worked before installing ati driver...and when you installed driver windows would have taken ATI audio as default driver(this is what happened to me, both Vista and XP).

You must also make sure that windows has installed the updated codec for HD audio devices...there is a KB on it, but I cannot remember the number. Is your windows updated before driver install?

When i install windows, upon first boot i install DX SDK, mobo drivers(including audio and netwrok), update windows, and then install vid drivers. After installing vid drivers I had to go to audio settings and enable the ADI codec as default audio device, both in XP and Vista.


Did you take the same steps in the same order, or did you do differently?

I read that it may be difficult for a newbie like me to set the various settings for the BIOS. Sure I can go through the manual and experiiment but this will take time.

My question: Straight from the box and leaving all the settings to AUTO (default), will the board boot and be able to install OS?

DX SDK as in DirectX? If so off the CD or from a download? Just want to be in sync in case I go with a fresh install (cuz I really like talking to the automated Microsoft voice, lol). One of the problems I was having was the mobo audio driver install process crapping out with an error message about not having the right hardware (since resolved, but maddening at the time).

I'm still totally open to it being user error, in my experience these things typically are, which is why I'm just picking the brains of people that are actually using the card to see how they did it so I can replicate that process. Thanks for taking the time to reply, it's appreciated.

It should but mine did not. CLR CMOS had no effect either...but once I forced a bad overclock and the board reset itself(CMOS CHECKSUM BAD), it works a treat. My board had signs of being used before I got it tho...

I downlaoded teh SDK from windows website. I have HDD with all my "needed files", drivers, benchmarks, monitoring apps, etc. that I use for windows installs...has come in handy MANY times. Don't worry about my comments...I posted just like you so we can compare and see what went wrong..might help someone else out in the future!

Can anyone verify wether the attached Fusion block is copper ? I just received it and i'm thinking of just adding it in with my loop ?
