So you can't tune vfsb down to 1.2v? That's really strange

Yep. As you suggested, I rolled back each setting separately, so I could see what was happening. The first thing I rolled back was the Front Side Bus Termination Voltage. I had it at 1.45v and took it back to the next lower setting option, which was 1.25v. On reboot, it took me to the light blue Asus splash screen and there it stopped. It would go no further. I waited about 15 seconds, then went through the standard bad overclock recovery drill, went back into bios and reset to where it was at 1.45v and continued with the other settings.

Now, I have another question. What would happen if I bumped the multiplier one more time to 10 x 400? Do you think the core temps would come down further? The FSB would still be 1600, but the northbridge core clock would be even more inline with the stock multiplier ratio mentioned in Tony's discussion. But I don't know if this board and chip can handle 4 gigs.

For the record, there is a correction. On the last entry, it was the Windows pre-screen, where the little blue dots marquee that the FSB termination voltage lowering caused a freeze-up. I got confused.

Increasing cpu speed will NOT decrease coretemps. What you saw before was most likely due to not manually setting vcore, and as a result, the board assigned a vcore based on fsb, which was why your 9x320 was cooler than 7x400 or whatever your two scenarios were.

As for nbcc, I believe that was to some extent been disproven. It's highly doubted that your cpu will do 4ghz, although you can of course try. Of course, if it were to happen if you had some sort of miracle chip, you should expect no less than 1.5+ load volts to the cpu.

So, like, in other words, do so at my own risk, right?

I never took any of the risk in you overclocking. But I mean that if you're going for 10x400 with hopes of having lower temperatures than 9x400, then you may need to do a little bit more research is all. That and 10x400 is incredibly difficult unless you have an absolutely lucky chip

I'd like to find out what the stock numbers are for the other voltage settings and see if I can minimize them after seeing just how poorly the auto setting for my CPU vcore was.

Thanks. If 4 Ghz is doable, then it sounds like it would be in the realm of water cooling at the least. I think I'll be well satisfied with 3600. So far it has been very stable and very fast. I was able to further lower the core voltage too, so things are looking good.

so first ive gotta ask, that symptom of programs freezing like that, is that because of the memory only? or could it be the cpu as well? was i right in overvolting what i did? im really unsure of what i should do at this point.

i have a 460 watt enermax psu at the moment, but that 500 watt earthwatts one is coming in my antec sonata 3 case, probably monday/tuesday.
too lazy to write it all out so heres some pics. i made them b&w for readability. i think its finally stable at these settings. but id need to run my system for longer to really know.

the lowest voltages you can choose are the stock ones. Can't undervolt them.

Hi all, I have a small problem with my overclocking. Currently, I have 3.2GHz @ 1.320Vcore, 1.45 NB, 1.3000FSB, 1.60 Sata, ICH 1.057 and it is stable with timings of 4-4-3-4-35-10-10-10-10. When I overclock to 3.4GHz at 1.4750 (set) and it not stable when playing BF2142, my keyboard lights would go off which means that my memory isn't working (2.25V). How do I get the right subtimings for my Kingston Hyper-X 8500PC2. I have an E6300.

well I'm assuming you're at 485fsb 1:1, which shouldn't stress the ram too too much. That said, if you're thinking it's your ram holding you back, you can try some looser settings to start.

4-4-4-10-4-35-3-11-5-13 may work better

that said, you can probably settle with 4-4-4-4-4-25-2-9-4-11.

NB 1.45
SATA 1.50
ICH Auto

Timings 4-4-3-4-35-3-11-7-13.

Any recommendation to change any of these settings to be more safer?

Ive clocked my P5b deluxe to 3ghz idle temp is 37 and 50 whilst playing games

it is hitting 70 under loads using intel TAT and orthis

is this too hot ?

i had the chip clocked at 3.2 and it was the same temp my vcore is 1.35 although probe shows 1.32

@nasgul: you're running 9x350 w/ memory @ 4:5? Why not 1:1 with your ddr2-800?

systems seems rock solid even though with the fluctuating voltage - i read up on the vdroop pencil mod but didnt quite get what i was supposed to do :P

im using an Artic Cooling Freezer pro 7 -

my paste is some old artic silver 3 i had knocking about

i know 70 is too high

but is 50 ish ok - cos it never goes above that when i play games only when i use TAT or Orthos

cant find anyone in the UK selling that cooler - can anyone recommend another ?

Here are some screen shots at 1:1 460 FSB x 8 multiplier 3680 Mhz with plenty of stability. The heat is at the upper limits, however, and I probably won't use this for everyday, but FYI for anyone who is so configured. Note that the Mem timings are the same as at 450 Ghz. I meant to clarify that 450-460 fsb pic. Used the same timings for both, but just took the snapshot of the 450. As soon as I get through testing the max bus on the 8 multi I will for sure work on tightening those mem timings as well as start to lower vcore, which now is at 1.5. Thanks.

Have been able to move up with stability just a little further to 470. 1:1, 470 X 8 multi for a rated FSB of 1880. Temps are about the same as at 1840, can't really tell a difference. Still warmer than I would like, being at idle 41C/ 43C @ ambient 20C.

Can any kind soul point me in the direction of what settings I should fiddle with first to try to get higher clock speeds?

More vcore perhaps? Try 1.35v for example to start with. 4/5 divider is much harder on P5B then 1/1 or 2/3. I would set pci-e at 100.

RAM timings set to "By SPD" which means CL4-4-4-12 :)

this setup 12 hours dual orthos stable.

Like mentioned, try 1:1 instead of 4:5. Your subtimings may also be too tight. If you're looking for an extremely loose set, 5-6-6-18-6-42-4-11-7-13 or even weaker. I've found vfsb to be fine at 1.2v up to 500fsb even with c2d on p5b. pcie of 103-105 would be nicer maybe, although I usually ran 110 as well.

You shouldn't need more than 1.45v or so

Other goodies include PC Power & Cooling 750 PSU, some Raptors and XFX graphics card.

I was after a mild overclock to around 3 to 3.2Ghz, while i understand the FSB and mutlipliers i get totally confused as to what speed the memory is running at (ratios?, no need to overclock to memory as i would be happy if it ran at its stated speed), what voltages should i use to achieve these modest gains, any help appreciated.

i tried to oc following this and my system hanged on me, then computer would not start then had to wait 10 minutes for it to auto default settings. i jsut suck at overclocking.

There should be a noob thread for noobs like me how to OC Cpu's and ram with it.

Okay for some odd reason on my P5B deluxe the Vanderpool Technology is grayed out and I can't change it at all. When I press the down arrow key it skips and jumps to CPU TM function. Does anyone know why?

Since you already have an E6600 with a higher multiplier, getting a 600Mhz increase in speed is a piece of cake. And you may be able to do it with everything at stock. Right now your FSB is default to 266, just up it to about 350 and you should be able to achieve your goal of mild OCing. To get a little higher than that, up your vcore to 1.4, NB to 1.55 and your FSB to 400 and you will have a 3.6Ghz PC! Easy. Now, this is with an assumption that your E6600 is an average to good OCer.

Power down and enter the bios from a cold boot and it'll be there.

I am new to OC. I tried to apply Freecableguy's bios settings on the first page of this thread and my bios would not even post. Is there anything I can do?

I have encountered a problem I have seen mentioned a couple of times in various threads, but never seen a real explanation/solution to... namely, the PC boots up, right through into windows (with the welcome sound and all) but without video signal. If I push the power button, the machine shuts itself down, so I know that everything else is working fine, there's simply no video signal.

Mainly happens when I drop the multi, and head into the 400+fsb range. cpu is stable as, sitting at anything around 380-390x9. It's a while since I done it, but have a quiet week ahead, so hope to be able to spend some time trying to sort it out, and would value any ideas to try.

Value any thoughts. The card is a BBA 1900XT with an Accelero2 on it if that info is needed.

I am completely new to overclocking (my first time) but I have been reading this thread the past couple days which has helped me immensely but I can't seem to get any of the results that are posted in this thread. My computer will start but I will not get a video signal if I try to go anywhere past 325 CPU Frequency. The following are my system specs.

I have had this system since November but finally decided to do some OC'ing. I reformatted everything and updated the bios to the most current one but I have not been able to get past 325 CPU Frequency. Any suggestions? Is there are glaring hole in something that I am doing?

I would say your Ram is probably the problem. You should be able to use tighter timings at 790Mhz. You might try using only 2GB of Ram. I had 4X1GB and fryed one set at high voltage. When I was only using 2x1GB it was much easier to reach 400FSB. I am stable using air cooling at:

Try 8x4XX - there's a strap change at 400+ fsb, at 390 your NB is screaming.

I've used 1.55v for the NB and 1.6v for SB (7x450) for the last 9 months with no problems.

Just for grins try setting your ram by SPD (1:1), NB 1.55v, SB 1.6v and boot at 8x450 - If that's a no go keep the same settings and give it a squirt of vcore, late 6600s like volts. GL!

My first post here, do ignore it if its too noobish :p:

I've had this board since January and have had such a nightmare with vdroop, FSB issues and issues with my pci-E video cards running at 1x... I personally don't think it's too much to ask for a product without so many glitches... ANYHOW back to my issue, I currently can't boot... AGAIN yes AGAIN... usually when I have that issue I just do the switching RAM trick, but it's not working now and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. What's the best way to do the RAM switching trick? I usually put generic RAM in it... it boots fine, then I change the mem voltage to desired (usually 2.15 or 2.25) then save/reboot... wait for it to false start two times in a row and then either flip the switch in the back or hit and hold the power button during the real startup until it shuts down again... and switch out the RAM... I've been doing this for like over a day now and I still can't get it to boot. This happens to me like once a month... I'll come in the room and the PC is not responding so I reboot and can't get it booted up again without switching RAM... Does this happen with ALL RAM that require more than 1.8v or is it just certain brands/kinds of RAM? Currently I have OCZ platinum 8000... anyone know if this RAM has a life time warranty or good customer service so maybe I could ask them to switch out my RAM? Or is there a brand of RAM I should get instead of this? Please help, as I need my pc for my job. Thanks in advanced guys. :confused:

Ive had this mobo for some time now and love reading about how you lot like to push the limits of the P5B.

Just thought I'd revisit this post I made awhile back. 8 months later I haven't had to change any settings (other than tighten up ram timings and my pc has been rock solid. Although I am getting that pesky double bootup thing where my pc boots, then shutoff then boots up ok. I remember reading threads about this way back when but I forget the fix. Oh well... guess I'll keep on diggin.

Somehow it fixed itself..... go figure :shrug:

did anyone ever put up p5w dh bios screens for "optimal" oc, maybe i missed them...

Are any of you guys with 2:3 in the mem ? Any problems ?

Some times when Saving & Exiting the bios, using 2:3, it freezes and doesn't restart ! But the changes ara all saved.

Any idea of what it is ? Could it be because of the 2:3 memory divisor ?

What happens to what timing signals (RAM frequency) that is different at an FSB of 400 vs 401? If possible could you use my FSB of 400 running my memory at 1:1 (DDR2-800, 400MHz to memory) and tell me what happens to what numbers if I bumped to 401 (I think that's the 'strap change')?

Thanx, read it... good write up. Everything else I've read on P5B-Deluxe and P5B-E says the strap change appears to be at FSB=401 instead of 400. Maybe a newer BIOS.

Guys, please help me out, which is the better bios i need to use for my QX6850 using my Asus P5B De Luxe mobo? this is not the Wi-Fi Edition, i have read in one thread that you need a bios 1215 for you to run the qx6850... I am contemplating between the 1215 bios and the Latest one, which bios would you prefer i you are going to update your bios if you have qx6850? Thanks...

my P5B with my Q6600 @ anything over 4x425 - seems to need 1.45Vfsb

Why is cpuz 1.42 reporting different cpu temps than 1.38?

I'm getting some different readings from 1.38 to 1.42. Specifically the cpu voltage readings with Speedstep enabled.

My Core Duo 6600 is overclocked to 3.2 gigs.

With cpuz 1.38 at idle, the cpu voltage is 1.050 volts and cpu speed is 2136 mhz. When running an intensive program, the cpu volts jumps up to 1.28 volts and cpu speed jumps to the 3.2 gigs.

With cpuz 1.42 at idle, the cpu voltage is 1.29 volts and the cpu speed is 2136 mhz. When running the same intensive program, the cpu volts actually goes down to 1.28 volts and the cpu speed jumps to 3.2 gigs.

Something is clearly not right. I would say cpuz 1.38 is right and cpuz 1.42 is wrong.


I really need to know what's accurate here.

I would think that cpuz 1.38 is correct when it is showing a lower cpu voltage at idle for the lower cpu mhz reading. That makes sense.

I would not think cpuz 1.42 is correct showing actually a higher cpu voltage reading at the lower cpu frequency at idle than when the cpu goes to full speed.

I'm going to get a e6850 to replace my e6600.

I intend to not overclock it too much as I'm trying to get a near silent machine so I want to overclock the e6850 just a little, e.g. maybe to 3.2/3.3 GHZ to avoid having to make my fans too loud.

Woud you have any recommendations in terms of the correct settings to get such a minor overclock on an e6850 using the Asus P5b?

Can anyone shed any light on a video card problem I am having.

just put a 4870 x2 in my P5B Deluxe board and the system seems to be running slower playing games than my 8800 GTS 320MB card. Are there any BIOS setting I need to set for the card to run properly? This is BUGGING me because it should be screaming with the 2 4870 chips and 2GB of video memory.

Folks...

My rig specs are below. This comp is plenty fast enough for us. My son and I are gamers, and play online COD-WaW. This comp is the 'gaming' machine in the house.

However, I think I got carried away a year ago and bought memory that's too fast for this MB. (G Skill 'F2-8800CL5D' DDR2-1100/PC2-8800 5-5-5-15) I have had to slow it down to get it to run. Also, will not run 8 gig. (I did change AHCI in bios).

One local tech said this Asus P5B-d will not run 8 gig of ram if the cpu is OC'd, regardless of whether one has the latest 1238 bios or not....so, either OC the cpu, or run 8 gig ram.

Having 8 gig versus 4 gig ram is not going to improve gaming performance, correct? If this is true, then i don't care about running 8 gig of memory.

I think the latest 1238 bios helps getting the MB to run 8 gig of certain types of ram, and does nothing to help overclocking the cpu.If this is true, then there is no reason for me to flash to that 1238 bios. The rig is stable and fast now.

What I would like to do, is have a more aggressive OC of the cpu, to get it to 4.0ghz. Many peeps who have this MB and cpu have had little trouble getting it to 4.0 on good air cooling. I have an excellent HSF, the Xigmatek s1283.

What do you folks think?

All i have to say is that this board still rocking on my rig with a 3.7ghz quad core and 8g of ram :):D
