My WD Phenom HD [thoroughly tested as perfect as you see above] just randomly died on a P35 MB. The trigger was adding a PATA and SATA drive together, killed the drive totally and all my work 10 mins before backup schedule :shrug: :mad:

Areca , L.S.I , or 3Ware is all I recommend and of course the best is Areca and LSI Areca being the one I recommend to Overclockers that need high compatibility Support do to jumping from Board to board. I started X and fgl_gears (or so) worked and looked accelerated in terms of speed.
All that took aprx. 30minutes. :up:
Then I installed the compiz stuff with synaptic package manager.
My current Desktop system for some strange reason did not boot my lenny install (had it installed on the M3A and moved it to the M2A-VM).
I moved that systems hd to my 780G setup and tried to customize xorg.conf.
In short it did not work and I went tru dozends for forums and tried all types of modifications without luck.
I booted my other desktop's system which succesfully ran compiz on the M3A (not sure if i had used the hd2600xt or the hd2400pro that time).
compiz did not work here also. I also had beryl/emmerald installed on that system before. I was able to start berly but the emerald window decorators did not show up (guess some stuff got overwritten from compiz/compiz-fusion). However if I opened or closed windows i saw 3d-effects.
Will try to sole the problem more systematic later (after at least 8 hrs of office work) today, all above testings where AIGLX related, i have not tried XGL yet.

I've had Compiz running once in Ubuntu 64b, but some update messed it up.
I'll try again, have 2 free drives now.

Compiz fun will start once dri2 is finished. Before that using opengl apps together with compiz will not work or cause problems for most apps.
I did a fresh install like i described above and have a basic desktop system with fglrx running using the onboard hd3000 chip on the GBT780G, so i will try the phoronix-test-suite now.

The only study I've seen about MEM on perf. was by Intel on P4->C2 and the result was very clearly 4x1GB better than 2x2GB. I would prefer that myself.

Finally, after so much work, 18 hours non-stop, I managed to get my K10 HD working and restore all its contents! ;)
Just playing, check this:
The Athlon X2 4850e and 4450e [45W], both read whacko core temps, CPUZ does not really recognize them yet.
The GBT 740G also overvolts under load - 1.264v idle -> 1.296v/1.312v load

Core temp idles -1/-7°C at 25°C ambient with no TIM :rolleyes:
But BIOS does not read those temps, it reads far better
BIOS reads 31°C with core0 fully loaded
I tested till 93°C BIOS, k-type measuring TCASE was 8-12°C lower than BIOS temp, so that looks perfectly in-line
Anyway, EastyTune5 can access BIOS temps, so thats OK
Problem why I'm ticked is, I can't now run low HSF speed and HSF ramping on demand, since temp is always reading too high or too low in windows! :mad:

You use a 330W Seasonic PSU? I use this one in the 4850e setup also, gonna check power consumption and post results for comparison later.
With M3A+HD2400pro+4850e and The GBT Odin 550 i measured ~45W DC (idle) and 90W DC (load) at stock voltage.
BTW: How did you get the HD running again?

And when I load it, the GPU that is, i.e. a game, it always freezes the system and monitor switches off. Me thinks its drivers, I still have Catalyst drivers on.
Did you install Cat drivers or use chipset drivers only?
Funnily, it can use Cat drivers if you install them although a little unstable :p:
