My 9650 from the egg new jersey warehouse is the same batch as napalm's which in his hands is proving to be amazing. if your new egg one is an L822B363 i'd for sure keep it.
My chip is the L822B363. and yes it's pretty good, but I sadly have a VID of 1.2500 When I first saw this I was worried, but when I easily got it to 4.0 ghz. it made me feel much better.
What batch is napalms. And personally I think almost all the Q9650's can do what Napalms can, maybe a little less but close, I think he knows what He's doing, plus giving it all types of VTT voltage. and 12v rail and what not. But it would be nice to know mine would be possibly that good. but right now I'm at 1.3312v in BIOS to get 4.0 Ghz stable.
and Real Red. IMO i think all the Q9650's are going to be good chips. I'd just get whatever was cheapest. but that L820B sounds pretty good. as it's made just 2 weeks before mine and I've easily hit 4.205 Ghz and still going. Sounds like a great chip. I think all of them are for now. So Just get one, and enjoy it.
Does anyone know how to mod my HX520 PSU, or how to get more from the 12v Rail.. it's currently pushing 11.92v that seems pretty efficient. right?
mine is L825B323 pack date 9-03-08 is a Screammer runs cool as heck ......39 to 40 under full load ............. damn Sweet @ 4GHz stable .... NewEgg Goodness !!!
Well thats because you have Water cooling.
Question. Would everyone post there Temps for there Q9650's Please.. I'd really, really like to see everyones Clocks, vcore, and temps. I have the Q9650 at 4.0 Ghz with a Tuniq Tower and my temps idle around 35-37c and load are 61/55/55/54 These are decent, but I've seen much better on air, or similar results with higher clocks. So I'm not sure. I'm going to re-seat my Tuniq Tower tomorrow and see if that helps. and add some AS5 this time.
p.s. Thats a great Avatar bigslappy, is that a sexy @$$ girl bending over to a Teddy Bear.... lol thats great.
Mine is L822B509 with pack date 08/29/08. Stepping A Rev. E0. Currently at 4.02GHZ 1.28v with load temps of 51/42/42/46 using a TRUE w/ Delta fan.
ElAguila.. whats the VID of the chip. yours was made the same time as Mine. probably same Wafer.. lol jk jk.
If you don't know how to check the VID you can see it on Core Temp, but make sure Speed Step, and C1E are disabled or the VID# will be wrong..
Also are you at 1.28v in the BIOS, or is that what's showing on CPU-Z, and I see you have great temps. Thats why I need a TRUE. as I'm getting 35-37c idle. and 55-60c loads at 4.0 Ghz.. and I've seen many people get better, but my Tuniq is very very badly warped, and needs to be lapped. I'm thinkin I'll still get better results with a TRUE, then lapping the Tuniq. Not sure what I'm going to do yet. what does everyone think? Tuniq Lapped. or get a True and sell the tuniq.?? I also have a TT BlueOrb II I got for free.. should I see if it yields better temps. lol jk
Also last question. how in the HELL did you get your PC2-8000's to do 1052 on 5-5-5-15? and what voltage are you giving the VDIMM. as I have the same chips and Only speed that will get those stock spec'd timings is anything under 930, anything else no matter the volts wont work.. What voltage you giving that thing?
The vid for mine is 1.25 according to core temp. However, when I boot up with the settings all at default the bios shows the vcore at 1.20. I have the vcore set at 1.29 in the bios with vdroop control enabled.
Hm... thats weird.. are you sure Speed step and C1E are disabled?
Thats pretty good. as mine's is not stable with anything under 1.33v at 4.0 GHz. and mines VID is 1.2500 also.. thats not cool. lol jk.
I'm going to try to add more FSB/VTT today and see if that helps me get stable easier.
I just got a new Q9650 with L823B165 batch, is it good? Do you have any feedback about it?
Well, Basically ALL the Q9650's are Great Chips. they are all clocking Crazy high clocks with low temps. You should for sure be able to get to 4.0 Ghz on air, with a decent Cooler.
you're CPU was made a week after mine.. the L, then the 8 is the year.. so 08, the 23 is the week it was made. so near the end of May, of 2008. and then B.. B's are better Than A's.
A is the outer edge of the Wafer, and B's are the inner half of the wafer.. People claim that B's are better, but we don't really know. I don't know.
There's plenty of feedback, not on your batch #. but on your CPU.. everyone is getting great results with them. and I'm sure you will also.
enjoy!
Hi, thanks for the answer :).
I already own a Q9650, batch L822B348 which is one of the first released here in Italy. Problem is that I couldn't get to 4.0 GHz stable (cooled with Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme), I think that I got bad luck with it and I've replaced it with an E8600 which is great in my opinion. I'm really stubborn and I've bought another Q9650 hoping to get better results with it, I'm always confident when new batches come out :D.
I've made several several runs @ attempting 5ghz with a 790i ultra sli board with bios set 1.85volts and like 1.79 actual vcore with max fsb voltage out of desperation. Chip still does 4950mhz without degradation issues and clocks the same up thru the clocks with day 1 voltages. Could be pushing my luck but waiting an hour or so for temps while running a ghetto home brew chiller can push you to do strange things.
That is the rev that cpuz is giving me.
I don't have the actual setting of turning off vdroop. or setting a number. that option is on the 780i FTW. not the 750i. but I did the pencil mod to help with vdroop
I might be sending my chip in for RMA. The MB is randomly dropping two cores and blue screening now. I've been running on stock cooling until the WC parts arrive & am idleing at 36* having never pushed it yet past 3.8 for any length of time. I have a Rampage Extreme and called ASUS tech. They advised me to return the CPU. If that does not work then RMA the board.
The batch number is L822B363, Pack date 8/13/08 w/ 1.25V Max. Is this a chip I should keep or should I RMA the chip as ASUS suggests and take my chances on a new chip or get another board and see if that was the problem from the start. I have two days to make this decision to get an RMA with the Egg.
RMA the chip since that's the time pressured one.
Then you can start the process of elimination.
Unless you can find another board to borrow within two days to do the testing and find out the chip is ok.
PPL have been having BIG problems with that board & the quads it's the 16 phase power problems .. test the CPU now on another board & i'll bet it's fine
Just thrown my L822B363 in, Pack date 8/13/08, first boot with 1.25 in bios, 1.232v in CPU-Z. Vid 1.2375. Chip has potential, definately smokes the QX9650 i had.

Not too happy with my temps, i need to give my w/c a service.
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/2...hz123vavr4.jpg
cores 3 & 4 are like 9c higher than cores 1 & 2 when idle. 1&2 seem to catch up under load though.
That's probably the sensors if they catch up under load.
I have the same issue with my QX9650, but since they are the same or near the same under load I don't worry about it. At first I thought it might have been the IHS was warped, but I lapped it and I still have the same issue. Oh well, as long as it OC's high and it works I am not going to worry about it right now. I can pick up a Q9650 later on around Xmas if need be. Anyway, don't worry about it as long as there are no other issues. Otherwise RMA it.
Yep the Qxxxx cpu's have some quirky sensors.
From what I've seen, a lot of the 45nm chips (don't want to say all) have quirky sensors.
Update, 4.185Ghz with 1.264v

Unfortunately, this is my Asus maximus' limit on FSB, wont boot with 470 even when i drop the multi.
I know its these damn x38/x48 chipsets + quads. I cannot wait to get my p45 avenger :yepp:
MY 750i has hit 467 FSB for a clock of 42.05 Ghz on mine.. Stable.
Zlojack what do you mean, (Thats the Time Pressured one) and to RMA it. are you talking about the CPU.
I have that exact batch number. I thought all were different. Mine is L822B363 with VID of 1.2500 and I've hit 4.205 ghz with it and will try for more.
is that a bad batch zlojack?? Cuz I've not heard anything like that.
Mine had a stuck sensor & i let it idle for 12 hours & starting working JUST fine after the burn in ..... Now it screamms ..................
hi I have the evga 780i q9650 and flex 2 9200 running at default ATM but looking to overclock the cpu to 4 ghz can anyone help me with bios settings I also just got 2x gtx 260 which play crysis at 1080i on max setting min fps are 37 but got all these highend parts but running stock settings want my ram running at 1200mhz 5-5-5-14 which they can do with ease and CPU at 4 ghz + pls help thanks Davidoff
getting the CPU past 3.4 Ghz will make the SLI run better. as they need faster CPU..
you can very easily get to 4.0 Ghz on these chips.. even more so with the 780i. my 750i did it no problem. I'm sure your BIOS it a little different than mine. but start by disabling Intel Speed Step and C1E in CPU Features.
Then for the overclock. Start by getting Core Temp and telling us your VID. as that will help with letting us know what voltage to set.. Also at default voltage you should be able to hit 3.6 ghz or more. just punch in the number, save and exit.
Start with doing something like this. I'd set Ram to Manual and leave it at whatever the default stock speed is. clock that later after CPU is stable.
in BIOS do this.
set cpu voltage. aka vcore to 1.3v
set cpu fsb aka FSB/VTT to 1.3 also.
set VDIMM memory voltage to whatever mfg spec's call for. usually 2.1v
then I'd add a little to the NB as thats a big part of clocking Quads this high.
with those settings you should at least be able to hit 3.8 Ghz. at and 1.3v you might even be able to hit 4.0 ghz depending on what VID you have. Mine is 1.2500 and thats the highest you can get. I can't hit 4.0 Ghz stable with anything under 1.3312v but if your VID is like 1.2000 or so then 1.3 should hit 4.0 Ghz pretty easily.
Give that a try and get back to us!
will i need to do the pencil mod or any other mod im running water cooled cpu. i had a asus p5q dlx before which killed my 9800 gx2 but had no vdroop well maybe a tiny little bit but the 780i have quite a bit so i have heard. if the mod is need can somone point me in the right direction. i will check 2moz when i go home. then i will get back to you thanks for your help and advise so far thats why i love this forum every will always try to help you the best they can. thanks everyone here.
mine shows a VID in core temp as 1.1375v @ 4050.00MHz(450.00 x 9.0) Prime 95 Blend=100% load
:up:YaHoo !
ya Need to burn-in the CPU in for awhile before pushing these CPU's Hard ! the sensors will take a few days to move correctly .. as u can damage them & the CPU if pushed hard too early
.. A word of warning !
my CPU sensors were wildly different the 1st 3 days i had my Q9650 & then they have settled down......the sensors are now within 4 degrees of each other
& you should use the newest RealTemp 2.79.7 it is way more dependable with the newer quads
can't do SS right now off to work
temps under load 100% is 39,38,38,41 in RealTemp Prime 95 Blend @4GHz
I bet you have C1 or other energy saving option enable and if you don't upgrade your CoreTemp, Everest and etc it will show a lower VID also...
I had the version before 0.99.3 and my 'true' VID was 1.11v and after I updated Everest and coretemp it corrected the VID to 1.2125v.
all these CPU's(the Q9650) are great everyone is hung up on the VID # not to worry .. just don't push them hard until burned in ...
An intel rep came on the forum many months ago when QX9650 first came out. He suggested slow increase in voltages, running TAT or similar, for break-in. Huge jumps in voltage aren't a good idea...even 1.25v to 1.35v is a bit much...I have followed this and even after running IBT for a week @ 90c, I've noticed absolutely no degredation, and if anything, temps have dropped a few degrees.
I just picked a a rampage extreme to try out with this 9650. I know most people say the maximus 2 formula i have atm will clock quads better, but i'm stuck at 480fsb with the maximus. Maybe i can get more with the rampage. bbl with results.
Those are great VID's. as mine is 1.2500 and I need over 1.33v to get 4.0 Ghz stable. I was worried when I saw 1.2500 but it seems like ALL of these things are clocking great.
Also Devious. I can't believe your complaining.. Thats so NOT fair. you're very very lucky to be prime stable at 4.0 Ghz with only 1.23v like that first shot you put up. I need 1.3312v to be Prime stable at 4.0 Ghz. also at 4.0 your full LOAD temps are around 45c. thats very very good for air cooling. I WISH mine were that good, and you said you were not happy with the temps. lol.
So. I lapped my Tuniq. and now my Q9650 at 4.0 Ghz idles around 34c but I've yet to replace the top 120mm fans on my case, I ordered new ones. so maybe they will help my temps.
http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/8185/1000530sg5.jpg
I'm thinkin about getting the TRUE instead. as I'm still not happy with temps. Loads are around 61/55/55/55 or so. I've seen many people with same, or higher clocks get better, and lower load temps. just like devious. I know he's on less voltage but still. these temps just aren't good enough for me.. I know the true is a little better. you guys think I'd benefit from getting the TRUE.
as i posted earlier I idled mine about 12 hrs , then did a Light O/C for the next 2 days off & on , then stock voltages as I primed it for an hour at a time
Think it's like a new racecar run it easy at 1st but run it thru the gears idle/load/idle/load/idle/load/idle but not balls to the walls,or Redline it , till she's broke in !
I've been messing about with this CPU trying to get it as far as I can within reasonable voltages and this is what I reached with a vcore of 1.42 actual. These are not prime stable, but they are benchmark stable. In terms of prime stability I'm only up to 474*9 at 1.4v with all other voltages fairly low.
I was aiming for 4.5GHz with my ram at 1200MHz. Not there yet...

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...body/oc495.jpg
Drop some water on that Puppy & yer off to the Races !!!
But Really .. Yes get a True ! but also play with settings as u should be able get the Volts down & still get to stable ,, but everyone's boards/setups are different soo what one guy gets u might not , but also you are getting better O/C's than some PPl also ! ............
I mangaged to get 4ghz @ 1.32 volts in cpu-z @ load. Temps are idol 28 and load 54 after 2 hours prime stable. Off now for a night out on the town now so will post back when I get up. Gona try and drop voltage abit seen as this was first I tried. mines a 1.25 but flys
I vote against the True, go water or you probably won't see a that huge temperature difference. I know you want to use your hard earned cash anyways. :p:
Well my volts are 1.3312 in Bios.. and in CPU-Z they show as 1.296v and thats where I'm stable in prime.. you think I could go lower?
also yea I'm probably going to get a true. as they are a lil better. I would consider going water, but I for one don't know anything about it. nor I have the cash ATM. what about something like the swiftech 220?
If you are going to just cool the CPU the 220 would be fine. If you want to cool the video card too, then do like Big Slappy says and get the individual parts. I had a Swiftech H2O Compact 120 cooling my Q6600 for awhile and it kept the temps under 60 degrees under load (ambient 27). It was OC to 3.6Ghz at 1.47v vcore.
well to be honest.. I don't really need to water cool my GFX card. ya it might help a little bit, and maybe, maybe I could Oc it more. but I've not had any problems with heat with it so far.
I've been able to get the max OC with the shaders stopping me, not heat. With it from 576 Mhz core to 744 Mhz core my temps on full load stay around 61c. thats not bad at all considering how high it's clocked.
Maybe later I'd get something for it. But if anything I just wanna water the CPU, as I'm not happy about current temps... So the Swifty 220 is for the CPU only. and it's not to expensive. like $139.99 or so. would it last,
and how good of quality are there parts. I'd not want any leaks.
Also I'm missing my top mounted 120mm exhaust fan as it was to big for it, and my Tuniq in there. So I've ordered some smaller 120mm Medium speed YateLoons. they will be here tomorrow. I'll try those out. if they
don't help my temps. Mainly my load temps. then I'll be even more upset. as before I lapped the Tuniq, or took out the fans that were to big, at 4.050ghz my load temps were 61/55/55/55 and now they get over that
within 5 minutes. so hopefully the new fans will help, otherwise I'll try a re-seat, if that doesn't work, then It will be either a TRUE, or H2O..
Hi,what'is the CPU GTL Reference ideal for Q9650?
Got my vcore down a little.
