I've had indirect airflow on them (120mm low speed intake fans blowing in their general direction) and had temps of about 45C.
Right now I have direct airflow from a slow 80mm on each one, I should check the temps and see how cold they are.

alright so that's a yes. well i'm gonna plan one of these babies out and hopefully get her added to the mix. i'm sure i'll have some more questions soon :) which OS and how much ram to use comes to mind..
1GB works fine, ran that in one for quite a while. My current has 2GB but it also folds on the GTX260 I stuck in it, so it needs more ram. XP Pro works fine on them, I'm running server 2008 currently but that's only because I got it for free when I was a college student :p:
and that's what i am currently :) finally found a good reason to download those server editions from dreamspark ha. well since today is my birthday i just might have a little extra cash coming my way :)
Happy birthday shoota, mine was yesterday.
so if building one of these for parents that want "quiet" computer what psu should i use? sound card/USB audio?
also with video cards can it take a pci card? only 1x pci-x?
I was willing to buy 1 or 2 of these boards but the shipping to canada (62$) kinda disturbed me. I have paypal : Can anybody in the usa with some spare time give me a hand? They look like a blast to build.. I guess we'll be rebuilding i7 in a couple of years :D
Edt : I'm looking forward to tommorow morning. The girlfriend is sleeping in bed.. I guess I'm going to bed too NAOW. Too much sossaman in one evening
The chips are 31W TDP, so they don't require much. Mine is currently running in the cardboard box that the mobo came in (though the PSU is sitting on the bench next to it) and with the lid a bit more than half open (and the fans cannibalized from a couple of old Northwood P4 HSF units) it's running at temps my dual core Opterons could only DREAM of!
Ok, after 6 days of 24/7 it's averaging 6700 for me (running my filtering web proxy with virus scanner as well) so I've recompiled my kernel to wring some more out of it. Cut almost a full second off the boot time, which is irrelevant in itself but illustrates the reduction in active processes being loaded.
Okay, I have a question. Will a regular xeon 771 heatsink work on these or will they not tighten down enough to have good contact with the chip?
I should have taken some pix and measurements before mounting them ... the proper items have a significant step machined into the mounting face to produce a little platform the same size as the chip assembly (not the die, the whole thing) but standing about 5mm proud of the rest of the surface. That step needs to be exactly right or you'll either crush the die or not make contact.
*sigh.. I'll finally get home 2nd june.. cant wait to work, earn money & *finally build a sossaman rig... in the mean time, the wait continues :(
Hey if you want more ppd we're organizing a bulk buy of a quad socket quad core amd build. Just look for it a couple threads down.
Ok nub here, what's a Sossaman?
just worry about the arima board lol! j/k, (but not really) it's a dual socket server board that takes two dual core cpu's that can built for around $150. pretty good point to dollar ratio
Cool man, thanks.
edit: oh and back to the Arima!
can any of you find any of the sossaman stuff in stock?
http://www.centrix-intl.com/details.asp?productid=4675
