They really should have gone with a 2 fans setup as a base. That 1st GPU pulling out it's heat into the 2nd GPU HS isn't a good cooling solution for those monster X2's.
Is it that the 2nd fan cost that much for not adding it in a way where the X2 would be to pricey. At that point consumers wouldn't care the added cost of a fan for lower temps and stability over the headaches users had previously with the 4870X2 overheating/failures. Since i've got my AC xtreme 3 fans, my X2 is never getting past 57celcius, now with that "OC protection" they put into the 58XX one could have lot of headroom for OC :D
Same garbage cooling as the 4870x2. Its gonna sound like an airplane. No thanks. 2 bigger fans would do much better, id pay $50 more for a better cooling solution.

Ha! I *so* called the clock speeds on this thing. I knew it wouldn't be 2 full fully clocked 5870s from the get go and seeing that confirmed makes those 5870 purchases all the better. And 13.5"? Jebus Christoph! Do they offer installation via fork lift? I have a feeling that this card won't be nearly as well received as the 4870x2. As for this "up the sleeve" deal that AMD are said to have, I'll believe it when I see it.
Next thing to do in the mean time is have some CF 5870 users downclock their cards to 725/1000 and bench. I am assuming we will be graced with the same old PLX interface between the gpus so performance should be very similar after altering the clocks that said.
There is supposedly a full speed 5870x2 coming along...

I would agree with you, but... it is a known problem that eyefinity is NOT working on the X2 at this moment (or at least at the release of the 5870). So they surely wanna fix that first, they are not going to launch the card without eyefinity support.Quote:

We've come across an early listing of AMD's upcoming dual-GPU Hemlock card, or the HD 5970 to be exact. AMD dropped the X2 moniker from its dual-GPU cards, so now we will have a bit more numbers to be confused by.
Bear in mind that the spec is still unofficial, so take these numbers with a grain of salt. The HD 5970 apparently packs to RV870 chips clocked at 725MHz and 2GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 1000MHz on two 256-bit buses. If you're thinking these are HD 5850 clocks, you are right. However, the HD 5970 has 2 x 1600 stream processors and 2 x 80 texture units, twice what you'd get on an HD 5870.
There's still no word on power consumption, but we're probably looking at more than 300W. AMD is still facing serious shortages of HD 5000 series cards, so don't expect you'll be able to get your hands on an HD 5970 anytime soon. Nonetheless, Hemlock will secure the GPU performance crown for AMD over the next couple of months.

If those specs are correct, I don't know how can they say that power consumption is going to be higher than 300W. HD4870 TDP is higher than HD5850 one, and HD4870 was lower than 300W. If its that long, even my TJ09 will have a hard time to fit that card :p
Taller card would have much more preferable considering the amount of lever pressure this is going to cause without support. Imagine a full face copper water block with water to add weight. Most cases can accommodate an extra half inch or more on the top of the card instead of making it so damn long.
