shazza btw, where did you get blue 24-pin connectors? In ppc and frozen they are out of stock for a long time :(

shazza btw, where did you get blue 24-pin connectors? In ppc and frozen they are out of stock for a long time :(
Yes ... I know! I think I got the last one at PPC - they said they don't expect to get any in soon, because AC Ryan is requiring huge orders for restock...
lucky...
have to use boring black ones
black matches the mobo connector so whats to complain about?
I'm so excited to show you guys my new cable sleeving... too bad I have to wait till probably monday to get my crimper and pins from P-PCS....;)
I got a 20/24pin to 20/24pin extension I'm sleeving right now. Because it's a converter of 20 to 24 and/or 24 to 20, it's got some Y connectors that fit into 1 socket. I've cut off the excess arm of the Y so that it's now single stranded. But I also noticed that some of the reds and blacks cross over and do not go straight across to their respective holes in the plug relative to one another. Some are twisting in and out. I just want to make sure, is it safe to rearrange them so they are straight?
All I'm doing is extending the PSU's 24-pin ATX cable so it's just a direct extension nothing fancy. I think even if I rearranged the wire colors it would be fine as long as they are straight and in their relative positions, although I'm black to black (GND), red to red (5V), etc...
my asus has white connector, but it doesn't matter. I wanted to make extensions with blue connectors at the end to all mobo ports such as ATX 24pin, 8pin and also 6 & 8 pci-e for GPU, but pieces of the puzzle don't match so I'm going with black connectors + black sleeving with may be blue accents.
waiting for it :D
btw which pins is suitable to made extensions for GPU cables? and also which wire?
i'm goin to order them from ppcs
2 quick questions...
I have a Cosmos S which comes with a lil ATX 24 pin extension. I want to sleeve each cable. Is there a tool I can use that will remove both ATX male and female plugs? I won't have to re-pin them will I? I'd hate to have to buy a crimper for just 24 pins.
By the way, awesome guide, I was somewhat afraid of doing this, especially for SATA cables but now I realize its not that bad.
I do have a reccomendation for those who are looking at buying a crimping tool from Performance-PCs....
spend the extra few bucks getting the deluxe model, I bought the basic model, and I hate it, the grips pretty much slide off on their own, and well, overall, just feels cheap
wondergod, Best personal and cheap guess would be to pick up the sunbeam toolkit, it's decent, mudermods also sells one thats direct from the "creator" of molex connectors, and from what I keep hearing is absolutely amazing, but also a bit high on the $$ side
Thanks Dragoonxx, honestly, I was going to get the Murdermod sleeving anyways so I'll pick up one of their molex tools. If that doesn't work I have a store by me that sells the sunbeam kit. I was just worried about having to re-crimp them.
@ wondergod. You won't have to recrimp as long as you aren't cutting your wires to a new length. (Caveat ... I've had one or two pins where the wires popped from the pin when removing it from the connector, but let's chalk that up to user error.)
After doing two PSUs, I've finally gotten the hang of the little $5 tool (check out Petra's Tech). Much easier than staples. I also have the more expensive one from PPCs, but the blades are slightly thicker, and I find it doesn't work as well for most of the pins. If you are going to go the tool route, you'll probably need a spare or two :p:
I've been using my power supply and was wondering if there's anything i need to do before i go pulling the whole thing apart so i can sleeve the 24pin so i don't electrocute myself? i remember reading somewhere about capacitors storing power even when unplugged, and i think i need to remove the entire outer casing to sleeve the 24pin.
Unplug it, give it 10 seconds, you'll be fine..... Get to it! :D
@ CptDreadFlint ... fantastic job. How did you manage to get your heat shrink lengths so nice and even?
Posted this in my worklog, but will share it here for the cable sleeving club. (Note ... all of this has to be redone, as I'm switching PSUs )
From left to right, 1) PCI-E 6 pin, 2) PCI-E 8 pin, 3) Sata, 4) 4-pin Molex, and 5) 24-pin ATX.
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...00_8Pxtj-L.jpg
yep
so, as I'm going to do extensions, I should take this males and this females?
and does this crimper ok?
thanks :)
Oh man these power supplies look good. Now I'm itching to attempt sleeving mine. :p:
If one were to individually sleeve every wire for the PSU, should not have any problems right?
Nothing will be wrong IF YOU CONNECT all your wires correctly. If you haven't messed with this type of stuff much, I'd highly recommend you do one wire at a time ... that way you don't mess up where they go. You also have to make sure you reseat the pins correctly, and that they don't pull/push out when you connect to your components.
Would also recommend you get a PSU tester, just to verify everything looks good before you plug it in.
Not trying to scare you, but you can damage components or your PSU if you aren't careful.
I take the extra step of testing a newly sleeved PSU on my husband's computer before I plug it into my stuff (shhhhhh...don't tell him ;))
Ok thanks!
Planning to do 1 wire at a time.
Will be doing for 2 PSUs
-Antec Signature
-Seasonic M12
Will probably try on the Seasonic first...lols
Thanks, Shazza! Based on your pics, you've done a great job in lining up the heatshrinks yourself.
@ Shazza & pingpong and all:
It took some trial and errors and there were some casualty heatshrinks along the way, but finally came up with a method. The following describes the adventures with the 3/8 sleeve. The measurements I'm using will obviously vary depending on what gauge sleeving you're using, however, the same principles apply.
Heatshrinks are all cut ahead of time. Mine are at 1 inch each. Having the heatshrinks precut makes the process a little easier.
After cutting the correct length of the sleeving (also done ahead of time), line up the end of the SLEEVE at about 5mm to 7mm BELOW from where the actual naked wire ends. So a length of 5mm to 7mm wire will show off the top. Eyeballing it may be required since the wires inside the connectors may not all be uniform in length.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e2...ingle_1593.jpg
Grasp-Shrink-Move-Shrink dance step:
While firmly grasping the sleeve in place relative to the wire, place the heatshrink 2mm ABOVE the the end of the naked wire. Away from the top part, hold all three tight enough that the heatshrink, the sleeve and the wire are held in place relative to each other.
Carefully heat, blowdry etc (away from fingers) to shrink the top part until it "catches". When the top shrinks, carefully move your hold away from the heatshrink while keeping all 3 players in place. Shrink the remaining heatshrink.
This 2mm leeway (length varies depending on size of heatshrink) should just be enough to perfectly line up with the top of the wire upon shrinking. Any more above the top, you may not be able to fit the pin back in the plug holes. Any less, the naked wires may show through.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e2...eving-1766.jpg
From there its just a lather rinse repeat for the rest, using the previous sleeved wire as a reference.
What you'll be left with is a sleeving job I guarantee you'll be proud of. Post pics of your work, all! Savvy?
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e2...-Sleeved01.jpg
Thanks, Cpt.
My end result came out okay, but I did have several redos ... I'm having a problem getting the end of the sleeving near the opening of the connector, but not too far ... as it seems I sometimes have a problem getting the pin in correctly. More practice today!!!
And one last question ... It looks like you sleeved your Corsair all the way to the entrance to the PSU ... did you actually open up the PSU, or were you able to get it looking that tidy with careful shrinking at that end?
Also ... I spy a new Classified build coming, that I'm sure is going to blow our socks off!
No shots of the entrance of the PSU, but yes...I went the careful shrinking route and didin't perform open cover surgery. Still came out ...fairly decent.
And yes! A Classified is in the house! I'm way too excited to get started on it. So little time and not much rum er... I mean just waiting on a few parts. Still debating on which case to use. A stripped HAF sits lonely in one corner, MM AE w/ Ped sits in the other. Decisions. Anyway, I digress. Pardon!
With 8-pin ATX and 24-pin ATX extension cables, what do you use to remove the pins from the connectors? Using a pin removal tool, I was able to remove the pins from the male end of the cable, but I couldn't get anything out of the female side.
thinking about getting a 8pin and 24pin extension and sleeving those along with my fan wires and USB/audio front headers
call me lazy, but I don't want to spend 8 hours doing the whole PSU and then having to redo my whole case
I think my system is pretty clean already so why not just do the wires that show?

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/35025/i7/...s/IMG_1080.JPG
or maybe just sleeve the end of the cable like this
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/vv...uide/24pin.jpg
what do you guys think?
Personally, If I was taking the time to uni-sleeve, I'd use extensions, that way, they're re-usable
I think i see an Intel SSD....kissing ur Corsair?
Lols.
Sleeving the extension would be so much easier
Welcome to the jungle!

Kinghong? :)
dangals that looks good :D
Do you guys think i could get a special order from mountain mods? I am going to need red and blue accent sleeving with the black mm sleeving(the cheaper one, smaller one) in the summer?
I think this thread started being so classy that it must be renamed into
"Cable Sleeving Gallery":toast:
He just looks evil, but he is handsome!
http://img4.abload.de/img/bananensle...pcx-02zbfo.jpg
Nils....ahahha.
alright then ill make a thread on it then thx dangals :)
Woo yellow!
Do you hink you guys could list some of the places that you get the sleeving you are using? The good stuff seems to come from acoss the pond.

Has anyone ever come across any colored mylar sleeving (besides the readily available silver and gold i.e.; http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...oducts_id=2135 )?
I am looking for red and blue chrome-like sleeving if possible for my first themed watercooled build.. :)
No hellstorm, but the Mylar examples I have seen, did not look very classy and of course very-see-through..
Anyways: Here we go with banana flavor :)
http://www.abload.de/img/gebackenebanane1xgn.jpg
mm tasty :D
sweet
If you got some more widescreen photographs ... then I won't be out of wallpapers anymore :D
Can't say I did the yellow/black mix all that much. Makes it look too much like an unsleeved cable.
The coloured sleeves from MDPC-X are very nice however what bugs me is despite all the exhibition going on, they are still not available on the US or Euro sites. Only on the MDPC-X german site.
Whats going on?
sleeving of a new air to the case more here in Brazil, we have no meters for sale in packages with only small amounts, it is a pity as the case makes much more organized and beautiful!
hey has anyone heard bought nils new white sleeving or his new international site ???
im trying to decide between white and red or black and red (in a black case)
thanks for any opinions and great sleeving guide
I tried using these to crimp the pins for the 24 pin connector
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/4567/deluxestrip01.jpg
Turns out, not really the right tool. That thing is more suited to stereo and automotive wiring then computers. I read people saying you can crimp with just pliers and maybe so, but me crimping with just pliers is hit..usually miss on a good strong crimp and always ugly. Finally figured out I shoulda bought this when I got all my sleeving, heatshrink and pins/pin removers
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/6504/slt16.jpg
I'd look at the factory made crimp and wnder how they got it to lock down like that. I thought I had to rotate the thing as I crimped lol. Made two ugly, probably easily pulled apart crimps and thought there has gotta be an easier way. Then I looked at different crimps and this picture explained everything
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/6255/slt162.jpg
Thanks for the note, I was just about to get the same yellow one from ppcs to save a few bucks, but I guess I'll spring for one of the other ones if it makes better connections. An extra $10-$15 is worth not having to deal with finicky tools.
I know several people have used hairdryers to shrink the tubes, but I was wondering if hairdryers really work as well as heat guns? I'd rather get a cheap heat gun if I'm just going to have to re-shrink the tubes after a few months.
Yep ... those blue crimpers work fine.
I find a heatgun works better than the hairdryer - but the heatgun works best for me. If you're doing black, a lighter also works quite well, but you have to make sure you get the heatshrink in the low end of the flame ... not always easy if you have a bunch of other wires nearby.
Anyone know when Murdermod will be getting more sleeving kits in?
Very soon Jake! Sit tight ;)
anyone have pics of a EVGA X58 board with dual sleeved 8pin AUX connectors?
Not sure if this is what you're looking for - a pic of my 8-pin connector on the EVGA X58 board, with two wires per sleeve. Sorry I don't have a better pic, it's in an area of the case that's hard to photograph:
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/4...33_niH4e-M.jpg
Two wires per sleeve works okay for the 8-pin, but I wasn't happy with 2 per sleeve on the 24-pin.
only the EVGA classified has 2 x 8 pin connectors
iv unisleeved the cables on my classified build (and am using both 8 pin connectors) and basically it just looks like another 24pin bundle...
so look at any of the 100000 pics of unisleeved 24 pin connectors.... take away a few cables and it looks like that :p:
if murderbox started making the murdermod weaved Black with red tracer (aka uptown red) I'd switch from using the regular stuff, I happen to really like the black red tracer stuff, adds a bit of flair to the look, without being overly flashy,
im at work at the moment and these are the only pictures i have online at the moment that show my sleeving
http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/3748/imgp0679a.jpg
http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/5093/imgp0680.jpg
when i take some better pics of the whole case and build ill post them for you
:ocau:
Staples are very useful O_o

And very small :D
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/3...emoverever.jpg
Thanks for the guide :) now I can finally clean my vinyard :)
:( another 2 to 3 weeks on MurderMod sleeving to come to US. Can we buy it from Europe and have it shipped international to beat the wait?
do you guys know what color both mdpc-x sleeving red and blue look like since murderMods is offering them?
Do you guys use heavy duty staples to get pins out? I have been trying with a old psu with regular staples just doesnt work
use 2 regular staples attached to each other. use 2 it works great. I tried using one and I could not get the PSU connectors off for the life of me. Good luck.
Re the color of the blue sleeving ... the MDPC-X sleeving is aquamarine ... it's pretty, but it's not a dark or royal blue if that's what you're looking for.
I used staples my first time ... actually found the smaller sized staples worked best (also put two together). They worked, but it just about killed me getting it done. Since then, I've switched to this little $5 tool -
http://shazza53.smugmug.com/photos/5...64_yMGBc-M.jpg
If you go this route, you definitely need to order a few spares, because you will break one or two early on. The key is doing your work in a well-lit room so you can see that you are getting the prongs in between the sides and the pin.
my spaghetti is back muhahahaha

http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/840...045copy800.jpg
My first go at sleeving, thanks for the guide!
HAHAHHA well the staple way to remove atx pins is definately easier, I thought i was so good at it i can just push and pull. SO I kept doing it all went well then all of a sudden, i pull the wire outta its pin. silly me.. Now I have to wait for PPCS to get back in stock with Female ATX Pins. Anywhere else I can buy???
Great guide btw
Frozencpu
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/17...tml?tl=g44c155
maybe moser, mcmasters
better yet, HERE and then scroll down to p/n: WMF-3917FT for 15 pins at $1.50 or p/n: 39-00-0039C-100PK for 100 pins at $7.95!
thx Jakethesnake011 and shazza
i might just get the hx850 and sleeve it, 2 accent sleeving to make it look pretty :D
Tcassius, I can't see the pictures. It requires us to log in first.
I recently got this little kit from SunbeamTech
http://www.sunbeamtech.com/PRODUCTS/...TOOL%20KIT.jpg
Works great, but now I don't have a psu anymore to use it.
@Herc130
Thanks buddy I just ordered some, Now I need to find the correct crimper...
redŽnŽwhite
sata meets 5.7mm sleeve :)
http://www.abload.de/img/dsc02063mqdg.jpg
i think they like each other :)
Nice, white sleeving inside a translucent tube.
How did you do that? Just sleeve a regular audiocable and put a tube over it with a chrome bit at the end?
If so, where did you get it? The chrome bit I mean.
@TCassius: Still nothing. ;)
I can see the forums, but only the links of the pictures. Why not host it at Imageshack or pict.com?
It is a 3 pin fan lead, as i am playing with few ideas. As the stereo jack has 3 connecters it works well. :)
Hope that explains a bit more bout it :)

Holy :banana::banana::banana:, that's :banana::banana::banana:ing brilliant. I love this outside the box thinking!
bentleya, I love it!
Major props for creativity, Sir. I'm looking forward to seeing more on this concept. :)
Thanks for the kind words, next step is black sleeving, so just nee to wait for Sir Nils :), also need to modify the fan side a little bit :).
Dangal's Guide + Straw Method by WestCoastMods = WIN
Bentley I love the idea of using stylish plugs instead of these darned molex configurations :) at least for fans if not other parts its wonderful
wow bentleya, this is really nice idea. Agree with Sniipe - your concept hundred times better than awful molex :)
btw, just imagine backpanel of fan controller that looks like hi-fi audio receiver with lots of slots for connectors - I'd love that  Also it would be much easier to connect/disconnect
stereo plug mods have been around for a long time, never has gained in popularity because of the amount of work+costs entailed.
Check these out for examples orac3 + der meister
good job benty!
Does anyone know where to get 1/8 heatshrink and 1/8 sleeving in canada? i would hate to bring it across border and get dinged with charges.. thanks!
perhaps from a well known auction site ?
Hey All,
I was wondering - How much would someone in the UK charge to sleave me 3x 120mm fans in a row? (so they come all off one fan header - Dont worry though, I am going to be using a molex > fan header cable :p)
I cant briad for shnit :(
you're unlikely to get dinged by performance PCs if you get it shipped USPS
Yes, correct it has been done a few times, i have done it already on a project back in beginning of 2007. But This time, its changing a bit, making the idea more common.
