I am definatly not the only one with this issue, and to be honest its a huge pain in the 4$$....

Ive tried everything, and like I said, even the timings same as I had on my 680i board (which as normal I always manually set) I get double the latency, and terrible bandwidth...

This is extremely frustrating.

Even more frustrating is that some people are able to get the good memory latancies and bandwidth we loved about the 680i, and this is the only reason I bought the damned thing.

I tried decreasing FSB to see if it would change strap or something at least, and maybe sacrifice some bandwidth to get rid of that horrible latency, but no joy.

8GB installed and working great! You should have no problems with 4GB I guess.

One thing I'm confused about, and perhaps someone can explain, is why to get it to run @ 1066MHz, "unlinked" mode has to be set? Leaving on auto it'll only run @ 800MHz!

Anyway, now that I have everything, time to try a little OCing :D

Just await a new bios release, Benchzowner is experiencing the same issues, bios seems to ignore TRD setting... Asus has to do something with this mobo fast

Spoke too soon... Memtest86 is giving me a bunch of errors :(

Someone advised me that I should look for an "EPP" setting and change that (or play with the timings), but I can't find anything like that in the BIOS :confused:

Any ideas?

Okay here is 1202 there is also 1302 and 1402 but I can't for the life of me find either.. I will say that I have only been using this bios for a few hours but I am very pleased with my results.. That is the standard for most PC8500 or 1066 RAM.

Those default timings are way to relaxed.

Although I did just realise your using 8GB's of Ram, which is why the board by default relaxes your timings.


Also.... How can you ask someone to help make it work properly, without describing the problem?

has anyone tested 1202 ? It seems to me that its more unstable. I am back to 1001. I am getting bluescreens with the settings I used in 1001.

I'm waiting for a post to a link for 1301.

Just loaded 1202 and nothing seems to has changed about memory bandwith.System booted just fine with the same settings.

Think I've figured out what the problem is... I'm testing each stick on it's own, and the first passed without error. So it looks like at least one stick is bad and will have to be returned :(

Edit: Confirmed! 4 sticks tested - 3 error free and one full of errors! Glad that's sorted. For a while there I was afraid the S2F would not support 4 sticks of 1066MHz ram!

Probably for me I am running a Quad a QX9650 (bios 1202) and before I was running a Q6600 (bios 1101) and with the exact same settings I am getting about 1800-2000mb/s better read 8600 to 10400, my latency went from the best on 1101 say 66-74 range to 50.4 on 1202, and my write and copy are up at least a 1000 each. Also I don't think the bios is unstable just different I always start over with a new bios and bring my system up bit by bit and so far things are going pretty well.. I heard on the ASUS sight that 1302 and 1402 negate PC Probe and AI tool so they must be substantially different then what we have been using and 1202 is related to these bios as well..

Another subject I was wondering if anyone can confirm the most accurate tool for voltage readings with this board?? Is everest reporting the right voltage or is CPUZ or what are some recommendations to make sure I understand what I am doing to my chip before I go crazy... Thanks...

You mean that you changed the bios at he same time you changed cpu:confused:
As for the voltages,I have measured with DMM and I can tell you for sure that vcore reading in bios is ok.Also measured vmem and I have found that the real is a bit lower(~0.05v)than set in bios.

Guacomole - If you changed your CPU at the same time as BIOS (which is kind ahow I read it) then it may be somehting to do with strap change like me earlier theory.

If you did change, can you please just try the q6600 in so we can see if that changes anything?

Question about cpuz and the screen shot I posted above:

It says "dual" and DRAM freq. "533.4"... is that as it should be? Ie. its 533.4MHz x2 = 1066MHz yeah?

Does that sound right for 2x 2GB or should I try lower? I'm running Memtest 86+ overnight with these settings.

So for 4 GB, I need to aim for combinations that set 1000MHz for the memory?

Seems as though I have my vdimm set higher than needed too. Not sure what I should set for tRFC, but I guess 54 would be a place to start?


Anyway, I should have the other 2x2GB in soon (~12 hrs hopefully), so I'm not sure if its worth playing with these settings too much.

What I'd really like to know is how these settings would translate to 4x 2GB?


Edit: well Memtest gave me some errors, so I guess I'll leave it for now and shut down till I can get the other sticks in there. In the mean time, can anyone suggest what would be a good staring point for the 4x 2GB setup... should I try to get the RAM stable before I start to experiment with OCing, or the other way around?

I cannot get 4GB to run stable even at the capped 800MHz setting, 2GB is fine. But I'm having no joy whatsoever running the memory to it's full potentail of 1066, even with just one 2GB stick in I'm getting a blue screen cache error. It hurts...

I know it can be done - some of you here are doing it, but how?!

I'm a little new to the whole PC build world so if any kind soul here has any pointers I would love you for ever and build a shrine in your honour.

After having spent the last few days reading various sources, it's apparent that every S2F out there has differing preferences when it comes to RAM. I think I got lucky and bought a board that isn't too fussy, but others seem to be very fussy when it comes to RAM.

For instance, when I try to enable the SLI ram mode, I can't even post, and have to clear CMOS, but for others it's the only way they can get their RAM to work.

I think it's working. Mangaged a boot and now a post with 4GB set at 1066.
Got it going with the settings stated in here but with the Mem voltage at 2.10, NB at 1.40.

Will have to run some tests and just keep my toes crossed that all things run smoothly from here on out but it is looking grand so far.

Good to hear you are getting somewhere with it. You may well need to do more tweaking to get it fully stable. Get Memtest86+ if you have not already, and run it a few times to make sure you don't get errors. Let us know how you get on :)

Any word on 1202 BIOS yet?

Looks like I won't be getting my replacement RAM for a while (last time I use Scan to buy anything!), but I really want to get on and start tweaking/overclocking. So can anyone tell me, is it worth trying to find a stable overclock before I get all my RAM in, or will I just end up having to start over?

If I can't do that, is it worth playing around with RAM settings to try and get it stable @ more than 800MHz, or should I also wait for that?

Edit to add: I suppose I could at least try and find what my FSB wall is - there is probably variation between S2F boards in that respect no?

I really want to get going, so if someone could help me here I'd be very grateful!

You could try up to 888 if it is PC 6400 RAM.

Best method I have found for finding an exact ratio is as such:

Set the desired RAM freq., then change the CPU FSB to near what you want it to overclock to. then press "enter' twice. This will then show the correct actual RAM freq. Continue by increasing the FSB freq 1 at a time and then pressing "enter" twice. Makes it easy to find a FSB freq. that works.

PGE DWN (Could be up - I forget)
ENTER
ENTER
OBSERVE
REPEAT until actual meets desired.

Get CPUID if you don't have it.
Run the ram at 800 mhz (default bios), and check the SPD tables in CPUID. For PC8500, it should be 1066 mhz
The one on the far right is the max settings your ram should run at. Set those settings in the bios and it should work.

Setting the unlinked ram speed at the SPD table setting and then working the FSB freq up as I detailed should be best.

If you want to try set other advanced ram settings , then download MEMSET 3.5 beta, . Use it to tweak your ram further if you so desire, but further settings might cause instability. Note: CAS latency cannot be changed in MemSet, even though it looks like you can. To change CAS latency, you must change it in the bios. Also, tRFC of 38 seems to be a magic number for many people. I've tried lower and higher, but 38 is stable for me.

I have PC9600 ram, and can run it at 1200 mhz (rated SPD table), though even rated at 1200, it runs better at 1180 (no bsods at all).
1066 should be no problem. I can't even get into windows at 1230 mhz, though it will post.

CPUID = CPU-Z right?

OK I'm still trying to get my head around this. It sounded easy, the way you explained, but trying it in actual bios has me a bit confused, and I'd like to make sure I'm doing this correctly before I proceed...

So in bios, my FSB is set to 1333, and to overclock to 3.2GHz I'd need to set that to 1601 - is that correct?? Should I just enter this figure, or start off a little below (1598 for example) and work my way up 1 at a time - is that what you meant?

What's really confusing me though, is when you say "hit enter twice"... What exactly should be selected when I hit enter?

Also, and sorry for being dumb, what am I observing for? ...when "actual meets desired" ? Could you go into a bit more detail here please?

Thanks for the RAM tips again - I set the timings according to the SPD in CPU-Z and a quick test with memtest confirmed I was stable @ 1066MHz, although I left tRFC on auto. I'll do a sustained test later, and if necessary set to 38.

Ok, set the RAM freq (unlinked) to what you want it to run at. In your case, that's 1066.

Now select the FSB freq, and set it to whatever, say start at 1550 by selecting the FSB freq and pressing <enter>, typing in 1550, then pressing <enter> again.

Now look below the ram freq, where you set 1066, and you will see a number (actual ram freq). It might not be 1066. Just for the purposes of this, I'm going to say it is 1056.8

Now, still on the FSB Freq, press <PGE DWN> to change the number to 1551. Then press <enter> twice. This brings up the new FSB number, but when you press the <enter> button a second time, it refreshes the "actual ram freq".

Look at the ram freq below 1066. lets say it is now 1058.4
Repeat until the actual ram freq reaches 1066.

Clear this time?

Got my first overclock - 3.2MHz/FSB 400MHz ;)

Only trouble is, after a few minutes of running OCCT, I get BSOD :(

Is there anything I could try that would cure it? Edit: A bit more Vcore I guess?

Not sure what my correct Vcore is. Everest and CPUz seem to show different values.

Couldn't get it stable. Tried raising the Vcore, one step at a time, but OCCT kept failing or giving me BSOD. I took Vcore from 1.275V - 1.312V in bios (6 steps), and on the last OCCT said CPU was too hot and failed. The cores were hitting 70 degrees according to OCCT.

The only thing I can think of doing now is removing the CPU cooler, lapping the CPU and re-mounting. Have I got any other options?

Up the OCCT temp shutdown... but watch those temps via real temp plz

Temp you see there in Everest corresponds to the VID of the cpu... not the voltage given in windows, you need to watch the sensor tab for that...

I couldn't find a FSB that gave me ~3.4GHz and integer value of 1066 RAM freq, so I set the RAM to 1000MHz, and found an integer @ 3.5GHz which seems stable after 1Hr+ OCCT, but with loose RAM timings. I've tightened up the timings and will run OCCT overnight to test stability.

I keep getting "code 4" fails in OCCT whilst trying to get 3.5GHz stable. I tried loosening the RAM timings from 5-5-5-15 to 6-6-6-18 and lowered Vcore a notch or two (was @ 1.3625 which is max recommended for the CPU), but that hasn't helped :(

Did you lower tha actual Vcore, or the numbers in the bios? The numbers in the 1101 bios have to be approx 0.25 to 0.3 v higher than actual to attain it.

I've been going by the values in bios. So that means I have some extra headroom?

I was thinking the monitoring apps (Everest etc.)were showing wrong/misleading values! :eek:

I'll try a bit more Vcore then, and see what happens!

Think I have 3.5GHz stable, using 1.368 Vcore (set in bios). Runs 3Dmark03/06 fine. Trying some Prime95 now. Very close to max. safe temps though. Gonna be touch n go during Summer unless I do something I think!

Think U type is for near the backplate and the S type above the CPU...

HR-09 has two types. How do I choose which one to install on my motherboard?

If your motherboard is by ASUS and its single MOSFET is near the I/O port, HR-09U would be the ideal version to install since HR-09S would more than likely get interfered by the surrounding components. But if your motherboard is of Gigabyte, You can purchase two HR-09S, or one HR-09S and one HR-09U depending on the size of your CPU heatsink


But for my case it worked best other way around lol :

Well sadly Leeghoofd, never got to test that BIOS.

Board popped a mosfet not last night but the night before, took it into
place of purchase, hopefully they will get back to me soon
if I can RMA the board or something.

Seriously irritating, I had not had the NB/mosfet etc heap pipe cooler
off, it was all original, obviously it had bad contact and wasn't touching
all of the mosfets, because theres a nice melted area there.

So system down, very dissapointing... Good thing I just bought a 500GB
and external enclosure and had just backed everything up...

Well I think I can safely say 3.5GHz is stable (see attachment).

The only thing that baffles me, is I installed the extra 4GB of RAM which I got today (so now I've got 8GB instead of the 4GB that I had before in there), and my 3Dmark03 benchmark score has gone from 43153 to 25168!?

Is this normal? What gives?

If you look at all the top 3DMark06 scores, they only use 2 x 1g ram. More ram actually equals lesser benchmarks, something you now know, hehe.

If you can get it stable higher, the max CPU FSB you can go to on this board, is 450, prior to a huge latency increase and bandwidth drop (strap change). From all my reading, this occurs on the 790i too, so we've saved ourselves some money not buying the SIIE...

Note to all:

I've flashed to 1201 bios, as the 1301 seems to be vapor. I can't tell any difference.

Might explain why whatever I tried I could not get it to post @ 500 FSB :D

I did also try for 450 FSB last night, but I didn't want to push the volts too high, so I gave up before I could get it stable.

I think I'll probably stick with 3.5 GHz as this seems to be a sweet-spot for me, and should make for a good 24/7 setup as long as I can bring core temps down by a few degrees. I just picked up some sandpaper to lap the CPU/heat sink with :yepp:

Also bought a few small fans so I can cool the NB/SB, but after looking at my setup, I can't see an easy way to attach one to the SB, as my sound card is in the way, and it's on the only slot I can put it on right now :shrug:

I'm with you on the part about not buying the 790i Hor$eman. The savings in not having to max out that board with RAM alone were attractive enough. Then there's always the 790i corruption issue!

Is there a switch in bios to disable ram slots, so I could switch between 4GB/gaming system and 8GB/work system without having to physically remove modules?

If not, there should be!!!

Was the bench drop due to CPU or GPU? If CPU, thien it's the ram. If GPU, then I'd suggest uninstalling and re-installing the video drivers. What are you using? 6.14.11.7474?

Not sure what the drop was due to. I'll run again later (just doing a 24hr stress test @3.5 +8GB) and see if I can find any details. I'll have to check what driver too, but that might have something to do with it I think. I could also switch back to an earlier image of my C:\ drive if that might sort out the problem... which ever, I'l probably need to download and install the latest drivers, which is something I've neglected to do so far! :p:

Going to look for them now...

what I have noticed is that if you change your FSB over 1495 the Ram suffers a huge drop in bandwidth amd huge latency increase, and also can anyone link bios 1301/1302?

Well I don't know what happened there, but I got an error when I was running prime95 too... so I went back to an old image of my OS, and tweaked a little in bios. Had another go for 3.6GHz too, but didn't get anywhere so went back to 3.5GHz and ran 3Dmark again. This time I'm getting benchmark score more like I was getting before with 4GB of RAM. 43153 was my previous best averaged score, and I'm now getting 43050.

Also checked my video drivers, and they're the latest available as far as I can tell.

I just need to tighten the RAM timings, which are a little slack at the mo.

Are there any rules when it comes to RAM timings? Right now I've got 5-7-7-23 @ 1000MHz. Was going to set 5-5-5-15, see how that is, and then perhaps take them down a notch from there, then test again. I'm just running a prime95 torture test before I try anything else.

Only change I see so far is that Auto works for Vcore now up to 1800.

Still waiting on RMA, though it wont be much use... no where to use it.... never mind, figure something out.

Well, I just, after three months of trying (built this rig in February), finally attained greater than 20,000 on 3DMark, with a score of 20,015 :toast: :party:

I had to put new ram, a wd raptor, ram cooler, nb and sb coolers, a cpu cooler, and akimbo coolers on the vid cards to get there, but I got there.

I attained it with everything overclocked to the nuts (E8400 @ 4.5). My normal daily wattage is ~215 to 230 watts, and while running the bench, it reached over :caution: 415 watts.

Congrats on hitting 20K man, i just did the same thing with my setup:D.
I think i still have room to push it a little higher though, Cpu on crappy water cooling and Vga`s @ stock, till the rest of my WC parts arrive.

damm, this board is like the first board that I can overclock the FSB over 1900, but sadly my CPU getting to hot so I think I may need to go water cooling for some soild results, and this ram latency problem keeps bugging me

I have noted that a huge decrease in bandwidth and increase in latency occur at 450/451 FSB (1800/1801 Clock Freq). The ram latency bugged me too, but as per my previous post, I just went ahead and brute forced my CPU at 4.5 ghz to get my new high 3DMark score.

I have made 2000 FSB with the Zalman 9700LED and the CPU doesn't even reach 60c under load. What's ur CPU?

Has anyone with a Quad made 4k with air? If I remember, 3.8 is about max.

you could always try doing this :D

Using a Q6850 (G0), I can get 4Ghz with 450 and Multiplier at 9 vcore 1.5, and temperatures range from 66c to 70 every core on full load and idle at around 37-43 on every core. so just have to wait untill I get watercooling to push it real far, because those temperatures on load are a bit to high for every day use :P

also using RealTemp 2.5 for temperature readings.

EDIT: just tried again to clock my CPU but getting to hot and is yelling at me to get a watercooling system, not going to go over (vcore) 1.5v :(

This is where i'm at after 2 days with this board and Q807A E8500. 1866fsb 467 x 9 Bios vcore set at 1.375v Loadline calibration on. pc probe and bios voltage monitor both show vcore @ 1.41v. ( is this to high for these 45nm?) Mem at 2.3v All other voltages on auto. 4200mhz 8hrs prime stable so far. Temp Max was 72c during 8hr small fft run measured by realtemp 2.5. What voltages would you guys go after next? Are the voltages in pc probe accurate for VTT, PLL etc? I'm air cooling Mem. I have a small fan on the NB and am using a TRUE with 2 fans for the CPU. Antec 900 Case.

I don't appear to be having bandwidth issues over 1800fsb. Ive had this board 2 days 1301 bios. Still tweaking i'm sure i can get a little bit more. I havent touched mem timings yet since initial setting to 4-4-4-15. This OCZ 4x1gb is rated at 3-4-4-15 @800.

I could boot 4.05ghz too hot and unstable though with my Q6600, though it was on water.

Still its good to see the S2F hitting those FSB's with a Quad not like the striker 1.

With this mobo, can i run the vista64 DVD and see all the drives without needing SATA drivers?

This board will also run with 8GB DDR2-800 ?

Is it flaky using Vista64, eg. Install finishes then first run get a BSOD or some crap like that.

Yes you will see the sata drives during setup. RAID drives show as well.

As far as the memory, if you install using vista w/SP1 DVD you shouldn't have issues with the ram.

I don't get it, you guys dont seem to be having a problem with the ram bandwidth latency going crazy when you up the FSB, maybe its something to do with the Kentsfield CPUs, when I get home I will post some screenshots of the problem.

I have not tried my q6600 in this mvb since getting an e8400 but I can almost match the 600mhz doms with $84 A-data ram at 540mhz with 4GB. 11207MB/s.
