Going by your rationality that being behind in performance is being late, yes Conroe was 3 years behind...
Either way, the R600 is late... How late from their initial plan, no one knows, but it's DEFINITELY late.

i read some info that there are also standard o'c-ed cards due to be released?Any confirmation on that?
A64 didnt beat the P4 right out of the box with a huge margin. It first really manifested with the X2 series.
Also, Unless AMD GPUs got a process advantage over nVidia. Then its still nothing even remotely equal to the A64/P4 moniker.
I hate nVidias sole power with the 829$ Ultra :(
Radeon HD 2900XT needs 750W+

1kw-1.5kw PSU for CF:p:
lol..... no.... definitely not gonna be that bad....
look at this thread to see what you can run with a 500w psu....
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=141505
the difference in power consumption between 8800 GTX and Radeon 2900 will not be 250+ W, so... no... you won't need a 750 W PSU for it...
Yup you are right. It was exactly like the Conroe/AMD 64 TODAY (as some people claim, I do not know for sure)
People were saying their P4C's at moderate overclocks with HT were FAR more responsive and smoother in windows and disappointed with Clawhammers overclocked to around 2.2ghz-2.6ghz. Funny we have the same argument today but no one acknowledges yesterday.
If you consider capacitor aging, then yea you should get a 800w~ for 1 2900xt.
It's not that 2900xt needs 750w. I bet i could run it fine on a Tagan 580w fine, but not for long term.
Does the MCW60 waterblock fit on the new 2900 series?
That's the sort of comment has the PSU companies are laughing all the way to giga-watt land...:stick:
A single HD 2900XT will NOT need a 750/800w PSU, even after capacitor aging. I would be surprised if it needed any more than a quality 550w, seeing that you can run a single 8800GTX system off a 400w PSU and a pair off a 620w Corsair, NOT that I'm recommending doing either. My choice? 600w for the single and 800 for CF. ;)
Totally agree. If max power consumption can be even 300W for the card. Well other hardware in the case will be under 300W total unless you have a highly OC'ed quad then sure needing a bigger PSU might do you good. CF will need a bigger one but surely a 850W will do you more then good on dual core systems, quad core a 1k PSU would be your ideal solution.
Lets see about that after a few months or a year. I've experienced it myself.
Ohh funny that my AXP system which use to have a Antec TP 480w couldn't handle the overclock anymore. I wonder why
If you refuse to consider aging, then you are a fool
HD 2900XT looks like a very powerful board, but if its power consumption is as big as rumored... crap.
nice to hear official statements from AMD-ATI saying power consumption will be a big focus from now on though.
/*OT. worrying to see people still think P4 was better than A64, single cores or not*/
Facts. It WAS smoother and responsive. It got beaten in benchmarks. Not as much as Conroe beat A64. A P4C at 3.8ghz is about equal to A64 around 2.6-7ghz. How many Clawhammers in 2003/2004 clocked to that very easily?
I could say the same thing but its probably not "over". Conroe is better than A64. *waits for the all the guys that kneel to their A64 and treat it like god"
Off Topic:
Sweet! So having less performance but better response while loaded at 100% because it couldn't keep itself busy means it was better. I should have reminded my friend that when he was getting ~40fps in CS:S with his 3.6GHz P4 and I was getting 80FPS with my Opteron at 2.8. "who cares that when you're in a big firefight that your machine lags, when you're running prime you can do other stuff and doesn't feel like you are doing anything!!!"
the 3.8 was, averaging most tests, about as fast as a 2.4 K8, but consumed more energy.Quote:

In rendering, the P4 3.73 ExtremeEdition was a tad slower than a 2ghz K8 btw, for a best-case pro-K8 real world scenario.
leave netburst rest in peace, it was a big failure in every aspect(performance/consumption-heat/etc)
ehem, HD 2900 topic...?
I really doubt we need a 1000W PSU for CF. Its simply a matter on how many Amps the PSU can do on the 12V rails. And how efficient it is.
I would say a good 650W would do it.
But its in the red zone.
Again, 11 days left till we hopefully know performance and power consumption.
How does making dinner while playing with your new R600 sound? Apparently the card gets hot enough to boil water...
http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?op...d=803&Itemid=1
What happened to that top to bottom R600 family launch? Where is the 2900XL?
Did I say I was ignoring aging? No. I was just saying that there's no need to make as much of a point of it as you seem to suggest.
As for the AXP overclock, can you prove it was the PSU at fault? Possibility it could have been the mobo, or CPU? How can you be sure? And also, I think you're kidding yourself if you think the TP 480w was anything other than a 'budget' PSU in the first place.
Back on subject, I really don't think that the power consumption of the 2900XT is gonna as shocking as is being made out. And, if it's because of the extra stress DX10 puts on the card, I wouldn't be surprised if the 8800GTX's power consumption goes up a bit as well with the DX10 usage.
Final point, I want independant benches!! :fact:
But the 8800GTX aint 178W..its far far from it.
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/vid...roundup_6.html
I wouldn't doubt the 100*C thing. My x1950xt runs routinely at 80 while folding, and above that when doing 3dmark06.

AMD GPU Clock Tool - Works on R600 !
Ever since R600 samples were handed out by AMD, people have been asking me for R600 support in ATITool. It's coming along nicely, but is not quite ready yet.
In the meantime you can use this nifty little tool from AMD. It can change 2D/3D clocks and lets you monitor temperatures of the card. It also works on RV610, RV630 and all previous products. It works under 2k, XP, Vista, 32-bit & 64-bit.

about overclocking the card -- do you seriously need an 8pin pcie connector?? I don't see how my 12V's 56A (total - in other words: more than enough) is going to run any different through 6pins than through 8pins.
Sampsa has one, as do many, but he is first to make a thread.

R.I.P. Official K10 Roadmap thread :(
Why is Fudzilla always post all the BAD things about the R600XT?
Is Fudzilla the AMD/ATI's enemy or something?
It seems to me like Nvidia maybe setting selves up for a fall even if they have a slightly faster card if all this pricing is true and ati ahas stock and they don't, even if nvidia responds to the pricing many users won't forget their greedy cash grab. That said of course for many on this forum the fastest card rules regardless.
So where are these cards at?

Its simply a place to ignore completely. I dont think he is biased, he is just stupid+greedy.
I have never appreciated Fuads bias towards ATi, but the insight he brought to theinquirer during his time there can't be ignored. Even though he has been a cheerleader for ATi since the onset of the R600, he has managed to include all the facts at his disposal, for good or for bad. I think the early word from his insider source/sources on the new ATi offering broke his heart.
You have a point, that really doesn't look any better than resistance.
Then again, it's the source engine... Why on earth you'd use the source engine to show new hardware I'm not quite sure, but the source engine is quite obviously outdated. Even with it's little upgrades. :fact:
Personally, I'd like to see them do a few shots of CellFactor, which IIRC is a free download on may 8th, and see how that looks.:woot:

R600 minimal requirements pictured
Update: Works with a good 400-500W as well
As some of our readers actually didn't believe that their bellowed R600XT might need 750W or more here is some proof. AMD clearly states you need a 750W or better power supply for this hot beast. You also need an Athlon or Pentium 4 of better CPU, 512MB to work and 1024MB for optimal performance or more. You can read the original part here.
The card supports Windows XP, 2000 and Vista both 32 and 64 bit one. We still have hope that the card might work with a good 500W but this is what AMD recommends. Well, it's all here.
Update: We still stay behind the picture we posted but several sources close to AMD, partners and retailers who had the card confirmed that a single Radeon HD 2900 XT works with a good quality 450 - 500W PSU as well. One of the sources confirmed the slide we posted but said that this is actually a Crossfire Radeon HD 2900XT with Quad core system requirement. Some of our friends will test the card for us and we will let you know if it works with 500W. Stay tuned. Gibbo from Overclockers had tested his card and he said it will run with 400-500W PSU and you can read it here.

Radeon HD 2900 XT for 365,90
Asus distributor or a etailer leaked the specs and the pricing of the future cards. You can pre order them today for 365.90, but the shipping date is still unknown. This pretty much confirms out €399 price as some guys on this price search engines go lower then they should to get more attention.
The Suggested retail price for any Radeon HD 2900 XT card is still about €399. The Asus card is called ASUS EAH2900XT/HTVDI and it is based on a Radeon HD 2900 XT at 757MHz and 828 (1656 MHz), it has 512MB GDDR3, 2x DVI, ViVo, PCIe and it comes with Stalker.

[B]ATI's R600 HDMI dongle revealed
:
OUR OWN WILY FERRET ran couple of HD2900XT stories earlier in the day, touching n the subject of HDMI dongle. This unique feature brings HDMI not just to high-end, but to the mainstream and low-end markets as well - without messing up the dual-display capability, which was a norm for first-gen cards with HDMI. We asked around some of AMD's channel partners and managed to snag a picture of the dongle that will bring HDTV connectivity to the masses.
So, without further ado, here is the adapter that is giving Graphzilla nightmares since it means the R600 can do HDCP, Daamit, in any resolution out there. Same thing goes for integrated sound.

Side by side comparsion with a classical DVI-to-D-SUB adapter that is being shipped with millions of cards today
http://aycu11.webshots.com/image/170...9078024_rs.jpg
The HDMI Dongle is a bit longer than a regular one, but it should prove a no-brainer to HTPC owners
As you can see, it looks very simple. Regardless of all the delays that have plagued AMD and ATI, we have to admit that this dongle just looks as it should – simple. We hope that it works as advertised. µ

Radeon HD 2900XT R600 heats up to 82 Celsius
Out of the case, Pictured
We created a lot of noise with the 100 Degrees Celsius article. You can check the original part here.
Luckily we have friends who wanted to help us out in our quest for truth. It turns out that outside of the case on a 20 degrees Celsius environment temperature Radeon HD 2900 XT will heat up to 82 Celsius.
There is a catch in 2D mode temperature will be about 58 Celsius almost all the time. In 3Dmode R600 chip heats up to average 68.4 or in worst case scenario 71.3 degrees Celsius.
In closed case the situation gets even worst so you can expect even more than 82 Degrees Celsius close to 100 degrees that we originally reported.

Radeon HD 2900XT works at 500W, tested
€80 PSU enough for 2900XT
Our sources confirmed that the Radeon HD 2900 XT works great with a Silverstone element 500W. This PSU has two power rails and each can provide 18 Amps. So this should be enough and the card works well under these conditions.
This PSU has two separate rails for the graphic card and it is doing the job well and it can power the Core 2 Duo system at the same time.
The good news is that at least in Germany this PSU costs under €80. You can buy it here.
But for Crossfire you need 750W+.

True, Source-based games might not show off the best DX10 capabilities of the card, but I think the point is make an attractive bundle (possibly because the card itself isn't the best performer) and they succeeded there. You can bet your ass every gamer and his momma will be in the market for Ep.2.
that would be a stupidly lame case if the worst case is 71.3c open air then approaching close to 100c when inside. they must've covered all exhaust/vents.:stick:Quote:

82C...holy nuts. There should be warnings all over the card.
The PSU requirement is scary. If so, it would cost more in electricity than the card after a year if 24/7 gaming.
Im happy about AMD stated this would be the highest power consumption one and the next generations will be lower.
i just hope that watercoolers that fit the 2900 xt will be avalaible very fast after said card launches.... i don't want to wait aslong again as back then with the x1800xt supernoise

yeah if heatsink is that hot, component in much hotter:fact:100c is truly believable seeing that, except that I could point sensor @ boiling water, quickly move it to card, and then snap pic, if i really wanted to show card @ high temps.

ya know.. a x1900xt got pretty hot with just the stock heatsink, the mosfets,
idk. i think according to rivatuners monitoring bit got to well into the 70's (°C)
at stock speeds. so adding a fan to blow towards the mosfets, open end of
the heatsink was mandatory. even today with a ek-waterblock on it, i still have
the 120 fan in place, slower these days, but still. now the temps are in check,
but give it the beans and you'll get 60°C no fuzz - watercooled. so a new card
using way more power than the old generation, i most certainly would expect
to hit these temps. - remember the 6800 series? with the flimsy 1 slot coolers?
they got those temps too, easy.
It is seeming to me that different manufacturers are giving their cards out with slightly different clocks. The HIS was to be released with 750/850 and Asus above is saying 757/828. I know the differences are much but if this is so I hope we can flash the card with a new bios shortly after release if a certain manufacturer offers a higher clocked bios out of the box. All the card are probably reference so it shouldn't be a problem. If this is the case it would be really good if certain manufacturers were charging more for cards with higher clocks than others. We can get the cheapest OEM and then just flash.
Has anyone heard if any OEM (non retail boxed) cards will be available or will they all be retail boxed? I know Sapphire had boxless OEM x1900 when they came out but also noticed that Nvidia never sells cards that aren't retail boxes, or am I wrong on this?

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=143104
Actually, I'm using a bit of common sense on it..
Think about it. If they had THAT kind of headroom, do you think they'd launch them at 750mhz?
Yes, I do not have the card, that is a fact. I do know, however, that the 8600gts, which is less than half the transistors on the exact same process took over 1.7v(IIRC, may have been more) to achieve 1+ ghz on air. How hot do you think a 700 million transistor part would get at anywhere near that voltage on air?
Therefore, while it may technically be speculation, it's going by other parts on the same process. Other parts that should theoretically clock higher due to a smaller transistor count.
In end, there's no need to roll your eyes. :fact:
just launch the card already ...
Hard launch my foot. That would mean that they would be shipping units as we speak in order to expect it to be available by the 14th. That would also mean that store employees would know the price of them and date of arrival (in some cases, not all).
What do you think the little tidbit aboput May 1st was about? That was why it was thought the NDA lifted, as it's hard to keep such under wraps. Stores need time to add pages to thier websites, and get them up...such takes time. The current fervor over this subject is due to that. WHere do you think most of the leaks are from?:stick: 3This is a well greased machine, and every ATI product-line launch has been just like this, same people posting the same sort of info, blah blah blah....should be no different than a standard AMD launch, for availability, however, form what I can gather....why do you think it was delayed so long?
why is AMD/nv NDA so tight?
Your comments don't either, in the face of reality. The marketing machine that is currently underway, the leaked "info", the XIP's posting, all signify certian stages in the release of a product. You must not look at the info, but the motivations for the info; the causes to know who has what where.
The majority of info I have seen posted has come from people that would be in the position "in the channel" to get cards, while the "false" stuff comes from employees that work @ distributors for various retailers, who, in order to have a launch, must update websites, post product info, and be ready for a sale. Contents of included parts, like the games included, clockspeeds, driver versions...website programmers and disc assemblers as well as sales people have this sort of info. Long before things can be on the shelf, people must handle them, and Shamino posted that the NDA lifted on the 1st simply because he knew of a retailer/distributors who has got cards, or was expecting them on that day. Once the card are in the hands of retailers...it's hard to keep the info "shut tight". Shamino doesn't stick his head out to get it cut off.:fact:
Info is starting to come out...which means only one thing...and you have overlooked this, obviously.:slapass:

Being the first on the market with mostly 65nm design could turn out to be a first among many good things about this product series. We heard a lot of people talking about incredible overclockability of these chips, given the right cooling considering the fact that top-of-the-line products are pretty power-hungry. It seems as though AMD will not launch the 1GB XTX version in 90/80/whatever nm process at all, but rather wait for the 65nm process to be ready for the masses. Smart decision, if we might add. 512-bit ringbus memory controller is also very much "to credit" for the incredible bandwidth Radeon HD 2900 cards have, but we'll get back to that later. There are also these pretty high clock speeds and other stuff to discuss...
