hmm I've been tweaking my chip on and off for almost a year. You know the game, you think you're satisfied with your current setup then you come on here and see some guy with a similar chip who runs much higher and feel bad and you're tempted to push the chip more!
I was running at many different settings for a while, my last one was 2.85ghz @ 1.376v, LDT bus was at 1.3v, chipset at 1.6.
I specifically ran lower chipset because mine kept on overheating. Now I come in here and see people running LDT bus at 1.4v and chipset at 1.7v.
Were you guys just doing it for benchies or do you run that 24/7 and plan to for a couple of years? I do notice however, running higher LDT's does wonders!! I'm priming again, 2.87ghz @ 1.37V w/ LDT bus at 1.4 volts.
3ghz @ 1.45v cooled by a zalman 7700cu - lapped and 115cfm fan mounted

Hi guys
Im thinking about updating my trusty 3200+ to a dual core model 'cos of Vista coming and Half-Life 2 will get multi core support along with Episode 2.
[rap mode] My rig is in tha sig, my homies [/rap mode]
I was thinking about Opteron 170 ( 2.0 GHz, 939 of course) since I can get it for pretty cheap (209€).
Currently my 3200+ is rock solid at 2.5 GHz (FSB:MEM - 1:1), but I would like to have the opteron at least at 2.5 GHz as well. Preferably above, of course.
You guys think this is a good idea?
Peace ;)

nice. whats the stepping ?
Got my Opty 165 stable @ 2.9G 1.4v. It'll run at 2.95G, but not stable. Gonna have to try the volt mod on my lil Assrock mobo and shoot for 3G+.
Sorry wrong thread, eh?
No one here probably has this motherboard but I thought it was worth mentioning.
If you use the DFI NF4-DAGF, you have to use the August 2005 BIOS with it. Any later BIOS will cause it to shut down, when the computer is not being loded even at stock speeds with good temps. This is an opteron-specific issue because it never happened with my Venice. It occurs in both mobos.
I hope this helps someone who is having a similar problem.
Right now the specs in my sig are stable. I went for 2.85 GHz at 1.6v, and it failed dual prime at nine hours, so I clocked back down to 2.81. :(

I love dual cores.
The 14X are being sold here for less then 90$, and since my 3700SD is such an arse to OC (CABGE stepping -.-) I think I might go for an opt. Seeing so many ppl hitting the 3ghz barrier, damn....:woot:
What are the good steppings? CABNE?
and which ddr600 ram should be considered good (budget:performance wise).
Strange that your chip shows a TDP of 85W, I have the same stepping and my chip reports 75WQuote:

Give the guys at icomputers a call, they're usually helpfull with finding a good stepping.
I bought my SD there, CABGE stepping.. same with an old venice. Stepping was absolute terrible, so were the OC results. But I'll try none the less.
No 144 tho
Hey! I got my Opteron165 2 weeks ago, but during the time i've been rebuilding my watercooling (Dual pumps). So i've been working my as off. Anyhow, i'm up running again and the CCBBE 0616 XPMW is doing a great work. It was a bit hard to get it running over 3000mhz, but after some serious mem-tweaking i'd suddenly reached over 3100. I ended up with around 340 FSB. IHS removed ofcourse =)
Return with validation tomorrow. Got'a sleep.
How much did removing the IHS buy you temp wise? Core 1 on mine is 10'C hotter than core 0.Quote:

Just finished dual Prime for 16 hours at 3003Mhz 1.29vCore.
Lets see how low i can get the Vcore before trying to find the max overclock.
Cant seem to register with imageshack it did not send to my Hotmail.co.uk address.
Any other good image hosting sites with same or better features ?
Its s good start and will be removing the IHS later & add a 120 rad to the water cooling over the weekend and use AS5 on the water block this time.

Okay, let me just make sure you realize what you're doing. Chips get tested in rigorous enviornments and let's say an Opteron 170 chip can't handle 2GHz with available error safe headroom, they will downclock it to an Opteron 165 speed and test it again in the same enviornemt, and if it passes, it is boxed up and shipped as an Opteron 165 chip. Overclocking get's rid of an error room that downclocking the chip provided, in other words, your chip will be more prown to fail. You will also shorten the lifespan of the chip, regardless of coolant, and no matter how "stable" the chip is, there's always tiny errors being processed each cycle that seem "unnoticable". Overclocking, on the other hand, gives you extra performance for less money, and it's a very addictive hobby. I'd say just be sure you're going to replace your chipset/CPU/RAM sets within 10 years and you'll probably be okay Overclocking. You may have known about everything I've told you, I just wanted to be sure you knew what you're doing to your chip. In response to your question, DO NOT just find the top speeds that people say and jack the clock speed up that high, take baby steps, up the clock speed 100MHz at a time and test it, then if it passes up it 100 more MHz, test it again, and when it fails to pass as "stable" bump it down 50MHz at a time till the chip can stabilize, that's the best way to OC it in my limited experience with Opteron Chips.Quote:

U think it will oc as the 0614 week? i hope so...
Why didn't you go dual core?
well i dont move to a dualcore because i dont need it, and i prefer single core because are more cheaper and have better performance on games. I bought this opteron cab1e on Ebay, and it cost to me 32euros (40$ +-) + ship cost, and its a NEW item :woot:
what do u think about this cab1e 0615 ? Will it overclock as 0614 cab1e week ?
I hope so...
I bought myself this evening a brand new DFI Lanparty UT nf4 Ulta-D mobo on eBay that came out of RMA,... just got out of the bag to test if it functions well.

I'm curious how high I can get my brandnew Opteron 165 on the DFI.

Hi! <-- new here
Just got my 144 yesterday... Pushed it to 325x9 so far, on stock Vcore (my DFI overvolts a bit)
BUT, i can run only 100MHz RAM divider stable, when i switch to 133, it won't even Boot. So now Im running my rams at 325MHz using 2.5-3-3-6 timings... But they can do 495/cl3-4-4-8. Is there any solution to use 133divider? Maybe some BIOS? I use 711 now. rig in sig :D
Thanks, and sorry for my crappy english.
I don't know if this is the best place for my question, the forums are soo big

Opti 170
OSA170DAA6CD CCBWE 0550UPMW
I may buy this one. What would you say? A good stepping?
Im looking at getting a 180 to run and A8N32 but not sure about the 13 muilt. I know they are already clocked fairly high, as you can tell by the 2.4 ghz but does anyone think I should be aiming a little lower like a 170 or 175 and then OC?
Im sort of interested in stability too, but, hey, you gota try and turn chips up with a little OC'ing.
Got 4 X 512 3200XL corsair to plug in as well. Suggestions anyone..
It should have a 12 multi. 12x200, isn't it?
It could actually. I thought it had a 13 multi, or I could be thinking of the 185.
My main concern is trying not to waste my 4 sticks of 3200XL so I want the E6 stepping. I have a 4600X2, and I was under the impression it would come with the E6 stepping, but, alas, it can come with an E4 or an E6 and, I, being the lucky guy I am, scored the E4 stepping. 3200XL is too good to waste and I was hoping the 180 or 185 would be able to put it to use.
I was mostly trying to push my memory but here is me horsing around on air cooling.
http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/5...nairio7.th.gif
Anyone want to talk me out of this fixation I have with geting a 180 Opteron. 165's are a dime a dozzen and are showing some decent OC results but I cant seem to get the '180' signature out of my head. Someone please talk some sense into me...
New question: which Opteron 170 should I get?
????? 0609FPAW or CCBWE 0550UPMW
Unless you can find out the complete stepping of the 0609, not really much to say. According to http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...ad.php?t=96900
CCBWE 0550UPMW (Some are crappy actually) is 3g
CCB1E 0609FPAW is also 3g
CCBWE 0609FPAW is 'Unconfirmed precise averages, but seems to be 2.8-2.9'
So you could go with 0550 and get the some that are crappy (bad) or the 3g ones (good). Or you could go with 0609FPAW CCBWE (bad) or CCB1E (good) or something that may be worse or better...
That was the weirdest post I've ever read. Moving on--->
How is this thread still alive? It should be as dead as the opty in my sig which I think my mobo fried when it died.
Good day, folks. If a few of you wouldn't mind assisting by way of a purchase recommendation, please view my post here: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...13#post2189013
Any info is greatly appreciated. Oh, can anyone explain to me how with all socket-939 Athlon's specs defining their HT @2000MHz, and all socket-939 Opteron's specs defining their HT @1000MHz, the two are supposed to be comparable, etc, with Opterons usually offering slightly higher performance, etc? I can only guess that their HT speeds are actually the same yet are listed differently for some reason. Its one of those OPty vs FX things that has been irritating the hell out of my analytical thought process. Thanks folks!
the HT is DDR so it's sometimes quoted as 2000mhz, sometimes as the more accurate 1000mhz (similar to the way DDR400 ram is sometimes said to be 400mhz). But both are the same. The next gen/K10 with AM2+ will have HyperTransport 3 which supports up to 2600mhz. I don't know what Barcelona etc will launch at.
HyperTransport 2 supports up to 1400mhz from what I can tell but AFAIK 1000mhz is the highest ever used by AMD.
BTW, it appears you've posted the wrong link. Either that or your trying something funny. Either way, I strongly recommend you change the link ASAP
Hello
this is my first post on this thread.
i have an asus a8v deluxe rev2 a 1gig kit of geil pc3200 ultra x (bh5) and i have an opteron 144 coming from a mate in a day or 2 to play with.
is there anything i should be aware of when oc`ing , will let you know the stepping as soon as i get it
cheers
pob
These are the results of the first play with my 144 opty cab2e (forgotten the rest of the number) only problem i have is i am using an asus a8v deluxe rev 2 board and the fsb only goes to 300 and the ram will only give me 2.8v
Did some tweaking of my CPU and RAM. THis is what i end up with
opty 170 CCB1E XXXX (cant remember :D)

New Opty 152 has arrived!!:D
I will do some more SERIOUS testing on this one as soon as I can get some better cooling (TEC etc), I have a strong feeling it's much, much hotter than what core temp says.
In fact, the temp DROPS by 1 degree when I go from idle to orthos lmao. Just can't be right, even if it's a naked core on water.

dunno my crap luck again gets 146 cab2e 0604 cpaw only got 2.7ghz @ 1.45v like 50+c at load. Ethier that or its im running a crap amd cooler which i sort of washed the paste off using water and im using some generic paste which i dont think i applied properly :(
What kind of temperatures do you guys get with your Opterons?
I just managed to salvage a "broken" Opteron 165 off eBay (I had to bend a lot of pins back though :D). I'm cooling it with a Thermalright XP-120, but even at stock it goes up to 50°C at load. At 2.6Ghz (stock volts) it goes up to 60°C.
Any ideas?
mine at 42ish semi load up to 45 if the fans are at full speed, depends on fans since i use a fan controller A LOT, its an opty 146 cab2e 0604 cpaw @ 2.95ghz 1.55v, almost got it stable at 3ghz 1.630v, trying tomorrow for 3ghz at 1.65v if i cant get that to run aquamark stably im calling it quits at 2.95 :( REALLY wanted 3ghz
I have no idea, I was too excited to note it down when I put the chip in.
The CPU seems stable at 2.6Ghz (testing with Orthos now at stock volts), but the temperatures are just ridiculous - up to 64°C load.

Opteron 185 responds to cold as in chilled water loop.
I may D.I. soon.
^ Wow that's crazy.
Update on my Opteron 165, now 52°C load, at 2.6GHz. Still at stock volts, but this time the layer of AS Ceramique is a little thinner. :)

Opty 146 CAB2E 0602 ~ This is my 100% stable 24/7 speed. runs at 37* Load under water. Great little chip..
The 1000Mhz OC has also nocked 18s of my SuperPi!
Thought I would give mine a little run. Zalman 9500. Load temps were low 50C's with a 20C ambient.
I thought amd cpu's are very bad for overclocking..
Hmm, thread resurrection. Notice the date of the first post and the thread title? This is with old s939 AMD chips, which kicked the pants off of Intel chips back in the day. Not modern sAM2 Opteron chips ;)

My opty 180 is still powering one of my comps, very reliable! :)
I posted about my opteron 5 years ago in this thread...seems like a long time ago.
found this shot on my old hard drive from 2006, this is as fast as i ran it day-to-day, i could go to 3.5 but it wasn't stable.
loved that system. and yes it did kick the pants off intel back then.
today it runs at stock in a family computer.
Cooling? Very nice chip if that's water. What was the most you got out of it? Cold bug?
it was under mach II phase, i have a screenshot of 3504mhz somewhere...didn't seem to have a cold-bug.
Very nice :D
