Anyone else finding boot time is very slow on this board?
It's the A2 POST code - GPU initialization. It takes forever and I don't know why.
Yeah, hangs on A2 forever. Im talking up to 3 minutes boot time in some cases. Boot time is also inconsistent, try 5 boots and there is a fairly large variation in each.
I find it's longer after resetting the strap, or any changes that require a full reset and/or a cold boot. If it's a warm boot without a full (power cycling) reset, it goes faster. Not really fast (like, as fast as one would expect), but faster.
My first ever boot was VERY long. But since that its all good. Booting in ~20sec from power to windows.
Agree but even even you do 5 reboots without touching a setting boot times will sometimes be different. I did a lot of testing when I was doing my review bc I was trying to show the effects of mem caching but boot times were inconsistent so I couldnt add that section with any reliability in the results.
My boot times vary too but I think in teh most it depends if its a cold boot and / or what settings in Bios you have adjusted. No adjustment fairly usual boot times.
Yes....I experience the same thing. Like pazza316 said, cold or warm boot matters. Warm boots seems faster and more consistent in the time it takes. Cold boots vary all over the place. I think its the DRAM ""learning" that takes place every boot. If you leave the ROG splash screen on it becomes even more apparent how the boot up process cycles and how long each step takes because of the visual change. Also, as I near the edge of stability with DRAM timings and speed, tbe boot process seems to take longer as it seems to search for whatever settings it's looking for. When I run the system at stock specs (Opt Defaults), the cold boot becomes consistent and faster. Cold boots have also become faster and more consistent now that I have honed in on my stable OC settings and have not changed them.
Interesting to year your experiences on this. It is not a huge issue, more like a minor annoyance when you reboot many times in a day. I wonder how other x79 boards compare on boot time.

I have 5, 3 on rad and 2 on the board. Thought the board fan was silent.

@ Eldonko and mdzcpa- Ive been on Gigabyte for a few years now, I thought all boards booted slow :shrug:
I find this one is just abnormally slow. I run a Z68 system next to the rive and if I boot them at the same time I would be posting this message with the z68 while the rive is still on the post screen.
It does seem a bit slow sometimes. Maybe just a setting, Ive been messing around trying to see if any changes in bios will speed it up but no luck yet.
And I thought that one of the UEFI selling points was getting rid of ancient BIOS which would slow down the boot(even though my phenom x6 with simple BIOS boots very fast). Oh well, its a good thing I don't reboot often.
The only reason I found the boot time (and boot time variance) to be annoying is that I was cold booting numerous times while I was working on getting the system up and humming. I had a cold boot issue that's now been resolved. Going forward I doubt it will bother me much. I already have the RAID bios running which adds time anyway. I also really like this mobo. The cold boot issue was challenging, but now that I have a respectable and stable base line to work from, I'm going to spend weeks tinkering with things. There is so much to try on the RIVE.

For anyone wondering how much difference there is between dual and quad channel memory on the RIVE I just did some testing. I was curious to see if running some fast mem in dual channel may exceed quad.
5Ghz 16GB quad channel 6m59.656s
5Ghz 16GB dual channel 7m05.319s
With close to a 6s difference you would have to have a very poor quad kit to exceed perf in dual channel. Not a huge difference for a 24/7 system but for benching 6s is quite a bit.
When you guys talk about boot, i take it you actually mean the BIOS POST times? Because booting is the part where the OS is being loaded. For me i dont think it's ever took more than about 100 seconds from pressing power to getting into Windows. The longest thing for me is when i power up it takes a while before my monitor even turns on, and i can see the LED display on the board cycling through the codes which can take up to about 25 seconds, then the ROG screen finally appears :rolleyes:
You can speed up the BIOS POST times by going in to the BIOS and on: Advanced > Onboard Devices Configuration and then disabling any unneeded things.
I have these things disabled:
Azalia HD audio
bluetooth
ASM1061 Storage.
"ASM1061 Storage" will stop the two extra SATA ports from working, and only the six intel chipset SATA ports will work. Not sure if this affects the code cycling but once the monitor finally turns on and displays the ROG screen that part will go quicker.
Im talking about the time from pressing power to booting into windows. Most of the time is post time, A2.
Speaking of the bluetooth, has anyone found a way to make it work during posting? At the moment I'm using my old Logitech keyboard with a USB dongle. Without the dongle I'm only able to use the keyboard within Windows and with the dongle, it works during post enabling me access to the Bios :) Just seem strange it doesn't work prior to starting windows. :s
Anyone has a good recommended memory for this board?
The only 2400 I can see are the g.skill ones so far, and they cost... alot.
Better to stick with 2133 ones for now?
is that the backplate "1366" supplied with R4E is the same size as a backplate of motherboard 1366 (R3E, for example)?
is to see if I can use the backplate of the CPU block (backplate for EK Supreme HF) I have now on the R3E
and is that EK Supreme HF for 1366 mounts easily with the backplate "1366" of the R4E
