What ever happened to this?!!? I was really hoping intel would produce this cpu.
there would be no E8700 CPU!
It makes no sense to für intel to produce a new (Mid/High-End) DualCore CPU because AMD makes Quads for the same prices.
So I think Intel will works hard on i7 and i5 but Core 2 Duo are on its end...
It's not about pricing, but the extra half multiplier that can make all the difference to breaking the 7ghz wall. When has any intel extreme processors made any sense in terms of pricing?
I beg to differ. Yes the i7 is new and better but that doesn't mean I'm going to shell out another $1000+ for a new system when my socket 775 system is only a year old. It would be more cost efficient to upgrade the cpu and gpu in the long run. Plus intel would make more money if they actually made a cpu that doesn't suck and is overpriced like the QX9770.Quote:

I talked to a guy yesterday that is "in the know" and according to him he had heard discussion of a E8700 but it is not on the Intel roadmap at this time.

I have an E8400 and an E8600. The E8400 clocks significantly higher. So I'm not so sure about this "binning" that Intel is supposedly doing for the higher rated SKUs. After all the only binning they need to be doing is down at the 3Ghz end of things. Up at 4Ghz+ that may not count for much. It certainly hasn't in my case. In my case the 3.33Ghz rating didn't buy me anything at all compared to 3Ghz, and it's not hard to imagine why. An E8700 would just be a waste of money IMHO.
Well of course every samples are different, some E8400 might be better than some E8600 BUT the only proper way to compare is by comparing the average overclock results of bunch of E8400, E8500, E8600 etc so we can get some average overclock results. Take 100 E8400 vs 100 E8600, I'm pretty sure E8600 will give higher average overclock result. Overclocking results always depend heavily on the sample you get.Quote:

Seems like E8600 or E8700 would be fun to clock with. I've had an E8400 at ~475-550mhz FSB, but limits by the multi don't let me go above ~4.5ghz.
I always wanted to do 450 x 10 or 460 x 10 for 24/7 use, but had to settle with 472 x 9 at around 4300mhz. An extra multi would have been great for that stupid SLI chipset, hell even an extra 1.5 - hahah.
