Maybe its worth to wait a little longer for the 55nm die shrink. :D still fine with the 8800GT. hehehe
Very nice, but as I feared needs quite alot of energy. 65nm is a safe bet, they can do an optical shrink to 55nm, when they are ready.
It's interesting though, this is really similar to the 7900 Series vs X1900 Series, ATI was a bit faster but at the cost of larger die size, Nvidia was slower but had greater yields due to lower die size. This time, ATI is slower, but not just by a bit, but they have a smaller die size advantage, and they keep the feature set advantage. Nvidia has way better performance on a single die, bur also more costly.
If ATI can do their Crossfire on a stick right, and charge a good price, they should be sitting in a good position. The extreme high end will belong to NV though with 3-Way SLI on GTX 280.

R600 was left stranded on 80nm even when the rest of the family was on 65nm.
So how long before 55nm on high end?
i think nvidia wont switch to 55 nm (they usually dont use half nodes) at all and the nextnext gen card (lol) will use 45 nm, due in q4 2009

RV5xx began with 90nm but switched shortly after to 80nm
R5xx stayed 90nm
R600 series:
RV610/620 65nm
R600 80nm
later:
RV620/670 55nm
even ati had, most of the time, the highend n-1 process node schema.
Since ATI doesnt produce any singelcore highend solution they can go with the lowest process with every core the have, RV still mean Radeon Value. ;)
