anyone know how much a 4870X2 gives with the GPU client, or if that even works?
I'm currently not running gpu folding on my G80, as it doesn't work so smoothly while working (would prolly need Vista, ugh -.-)
it works, but it's even slower then a 3870x2 afaik since you're not using the entire arch and the part it is using is clocked lower (reference 4870x2 vs 3870x2). Idk the exact numbers, Legoman posted a direct link to his spreadsheets but that hasn't been linked in any guide/sticky I think???

My 8800 is kinda buggered with the newer GPU clients, only gives like 3300 PPD and takes a full core away from WCG, which is unacceptable I'm afraid :(

OCed the PCI-E a bit, played with threats installed new 177.92 nVidia Drivers and we have 12750 PPD :p: , so another +750 PPD [ Same proteins as before ]. Might try the new drivers as well guys. They definetly tweaked CUDA , because those additional PPD's I got on the GPU , it's 8.1K now, was 7.4K.

I'm new to folding, and wondering how exactly it works. Is it a program i download? And can i fold for different things?or is it all for the same cause? Any and all info on this would help me decide if it is something i would be interested in. Also, is there certain system requirements for it, or does a slower machine just not do as much?
Yes, you download a program. It runs in the background crunches data known as work units, then sends them back when they are finished. Stanford pretty much decides what protein simulations they need currently. Nice thing is the CPU clients aren't really noticeable because they are a low-priority process. Anything else wants the CPU, it gives it up. Some things like video rendering may be affected but most stuff isn't.
System requirements vary. If you run the older, classic client, you can run that on practically anything. It just takes a long time for a P3 500MHz to get through a unit though ;) For multi-core systems, there is the SMP client available, but it is in beta and sometimes can be a little bit on the fussy side. Then there are two other beta clients, the GPU clients, that run on nVidia and ATI graphics cards. Needs to be a G80 or newer for nvidia, 2900 or newer for ATI. Those can be fussy sometimes too, but so far the nvidia client I'm running hasn't been a problem.
For the most hands-free, worry-free folding, the standard client is the one to pick. Basically set it up and let it run, it rarely has issues. The only issues I've had in the last year with it was due to an unstable system. It just scores much lower than the newer clients. SMP and GPU2 score much higher, but you have to watch and baby sometimes and be willing to rip your hair out occasionally :D
Ok, so first off, where can i get these programs?
Also, i'm seeing there is other various folding teams for different causes, internet mapping, d2ol, etc. etc., can you partake in all of them.
I was also wondering why schools don't do this, like my school for example, its a small school, but if they ran this overnight, it could do a lot of damage, i can't imagine what a school with quite a few hundred computers could do over a short period of time running overnight.
Can you not have it throttled back? If you run these do they stress on components much?
If say you ran it on 10 or so Pentium 2 age computers, would it put much of a dent in the points you rack up? or would a machine of that age not even be worth it?

There are other projects, yes, they each have their own client, and many you can't run at the same time because they all want CPU power (mostly). Dimes you can run in tandem with other projects though, it doesn't use the CPU that much, just a blip here and there.
They run at 100% CPU usage, typically, but yes you can throttle it back to whatever you want. More stress on components, yes, and definitely more heat, but I've not had any hardware die because of it yet!
Running on 10 P2 computers won't get too far with folding at home. They could do some damage in dimes though, because dimes isn't CPU dependent.

Schools don't do it because of the bean counters and power bills. I know someone on another team that was allowed to fold on 35-40 E6600s over the summer. He was putting up about 36K PPD.

So i could run dimes on multiple computers and then one of my choice that i want to fold for. What do the majority on extreme systems fold for?

Yes you could run dimes on all the computers if you like.
I wouldn't say the majority run any particular project, there are a lot of us on F@H, a lot on WCG, and a lot on other projects. You pick what feels right to you :up:
With your PC, you could run the SMP client and the GPU2 client together under vista, as long as you don't mind babysitting them every so often. I don't want to scare you away from those, but they are beta so I figure a warning is necessary ;) However like I said I've had no issues with the GPU2 client and the SMP client has been pretty stable recently again.
Your 1.3GHz P3 can fold, using the older standard CPU client, slow but capable enough, so it is up to you whether you want to pay the electric to have it run. If it is running anyway, I'd say go ahead :)
I am using XP Pro 32-bit atm, not vista. Now to just decide what i want to fold for, thanks for all the help so far, more may be needed though...
Great, you can answer my question about GPU folding under XP, how much CPU usage does it take? If it takes one whole core you're out of luck and won't be able to run SMP until you move to Vista.:shrug:

There are too many computers in my house just sitting there doing nothing so might as well do something with them
the only problem is I got a nice quad but all the cores are sitting at 25%...when I'm not doing anything I want it to run close to 100%...any ideas on that

What client are you running on your quad? Just be aware that in task manager processes tab 25% on a process means it is taking up a whole core on a quad. Four threads at 25% then is 100% CPU usage. That tab treats it as CPU usage not core usage. Performance tab shows each individual core load.
Im using 6.22 beta2 for MPICH...the weird thing is I have it installed on my dual core laptop and its shwoing 4 fahcores loading in the process tab and 100% on both cpus...my quad is showing 4 FahCore_82 processes with only one using the cpu, the other 3 are showing 0% cpu usage...under peformance the total cpu usage is hovering between 25-28%
DeanZ you're running a single instance client it seems, try adding -smp to the advanced configuration options as desribed in the setup guide.
Stop the client, run it with -configonly flag, change the advanced options to include the additional client parameters: -verbosity 9 -smp
Delete qeue.dat and your entire work folder, restart the client. Install fahmon to monitor the client, and report back what project you got :up:
ps. If you want to be a 'good boy' you can finish the wu, but it's their fault for making this client act this way so they should take the deleted wu's as their own doing imho.
I agree, if you download the SMP client then you kind of expect it to run SMP units from the get go.

Also, I'm running one SMP client on a quad but it loads all 4 CPU's on 100, can I run two SMP's or one will cripple the other and the PPD will go down.

You have to run in non-SLI mode to fold on two GPUs anyway, so I don't see why it wouldn't work. And if you are running Vista it shouldn't affect SMP too much, it may drop it a little bit but more than make up for it from the GPU. Just don't mix and match GPUs in the same system, that makes things get grumpy.
Well I've been folding for a couple weeks on the base client(6.20) and its been working good. so today i'm trying to set up on the smp client(6.22). uninstalled 6.20 and installed 6.22 run install.bat enter user/pass and it says fail, so I try run as admin and it pops up then disappears. could use some help figuring this out. using sig rig

You have to disable UAC in Vista to allow SMP to work right.

GPU's need to run independently...aka no crossfire or SLI
ATI GPU2 doesn't play as nice with the SMP client either I found out. Somehow running it on my rig (Q6600 @ 3.2GHz and ATI 4870) dropped my SMP PPD super low, like, lower than the PPD of my old opteron 165 @ 2.8GHz! I don't understand how. And it was really unstable too... ATI's client needs more work :(

so its now running at 100% on all the core...i didn't do anything different...don't understand why but whatever its working...Fahmon was very annoying to set up and they need better instructions (don't click on the work folder click on the larger folder) and finally...GPU's rock the socks off CPU's point wise lol
and finally orthos stable, OCCT stable and Prime 95 stable mean nothing compared to folding stable...had to back off 100mhz but whatever 3.6 is good enough
so i'm off to install on the other computers in my house
btw does the gpu client work on mobile...i got a 9600m gt in my laptop that i wouldn't mind using
Yes it works on mobile, if you get some modified drivers for it. I don't know the details on that. The thing is, I'd be worried about heat unless you can crank the fan full tilt while running GPU client.

Started it and this is quite different for me, how can I tell if it's working? (oh nvm my temp was up to 64C @ 50% fan speed, down now to 56 after setting fan to 100% so I guess it is working), why bother overclocking my CPU if my GPU is the one being hammered and finally should I try overclocking my card?
I'm able to run games great @ 725 core speed but I'd hate to fry my card as I suspect it's being tested now as never before.

Are you running Vista or XP? If you are on Vista you can actually run both GPU and CPU in the SMP client, if you so desire :) XP doesn't handle the core loading very well so it gets a little grumpy and the SMP client suffers a lot.
Core speed on the graphics card isn't as big of a deal with F@H GPU. Shader speed is where it is at for F@H :up: Of course core and mem have to be in reason but shaders are the biggest factor for sure.
I don't know if the -advmethods does anything for the GPU client. Can't hurt though I don't think.

Give the SMP + GPU a go first. It'll probably work fine, I know people who do it without issue. Just be sure to set them so they have different machine IDs (like SMP on 1 and GPU on 2 for example). Don't want them getting all goofballed up and confused ;)

For Folding the SLI doesn't matter it's not used, If you buy the new ASU nehalem Board with 6 PCIE and put in 6 nVIDIA cards with no bridges [ SLI ] you'll run 6 Clients without any problems. In Vista you don;t need to assign Processes, Vista handles it well, especially the x64 edition
What Kondik said. You can still use two nvidia cards in a crossfire board, just you can't run them in SLI. But you have to disable SLI anyway while folding. It kind of depends on what you are after for your main rig which way to go. I went with a 4870 on my main rig, I knew it wasn't as good with folding but I wanted the graphics power for my games and I wasn't going to spend more money for a lesser card (I got my 4870 for nearly $100 less than a gtx260 at the time).
You can still run folding on ATI cards though.. theoretically. I'll admit I've had big issues getting it to work on my PC for some reason, and I don't know the reasons yet :(

I have been looking around the F@H threads and doing a lot of thinking and have decided I'm going to sell both my rigs. CPU folding doesn't get as much credit compared to GPU folding.

How much do you guys in the USA pay for those parts? I'm under the impression you can get the GSO's for $80 or so. Over here they work out to be $130 :rolleyes:

The diffrence is big enough but mostly for projects with the same 'worth' they tend to give simular ppd.
Ya I do run FAHmon, pretty handy (that's where I read the PPD).
Just tried to raise shader higher, but got errors in ATITool. GPU was at 85C though, so I put the fan to 100% and voila.. 1728 shader 20min stable.
Oh well, I really need to mount that wtaerblock I had on my GTS (fortunately it fits both card types, Watercool FTW). 45C loaded instead of 76 with fan on full speed should help some more.

Yeah well, it's a new Ultra actually. Had 3 of them for a Tri-SLI setup for a customer a while back, before GT200 was released. One card was broken, so I RMAed it. They took their good time, and when they sent a new one back, it was 8 weeks past and the new cards were here, makiing the Ultra pretty much worthless. 500€ down the drain.
Since I couldn't get a good price for it any more, I said what the heck.. sold my GTS 640 (which was a Vmodded A3 that ran 780 core/1900 shader BTW :D ) and kept the Ultra. Still fast enough on XP x64 (no DX10 anyway) and my 24". Hell, I played Crysis on my pimped-up GTS in 1920x1200 all on high, so who needs new cards anyway :D

Got a different OS now (server 08 x64) and a new vid card.. HD4870X2.
So I gave the whole GPU folding thing a new try... set up systray client with FAHmon, so far so good. It takes around 6-8% CPU time on one of my Quad's cores, way better than with XP. Also there is no sluggishness while surfing the web now.
However, as always, I can't get the stupid client to start on the 2nd GPU. Following the official multi-GPU guide, I set up 2 different folders in C:\Users\bla with the modifiert shortcut and all, but when I want to start the 2nd it just says that the GPU isn't supported.
I do NOT have a 2nd monitor attached to the card, nor do I intend to get one. Is that why it doesn't work? Because I'd need to connect both DVIs so both GPU cores work with folding?
PPD rating is ridiculously low anyways.. what's up with that, still all NV optimized? FAH really needs to work on that.
Vista absolutely has to have the 2nd monitor or a dummy plug with the desktop extended to it. :) For some reason X24870s are tougher to get 2 clients running on but people at F@H are doing it. I've seen ppd reported as high as 8KQuote:

Did you measure the 300w power draw? Just curious, seems people tend to use the max draw from the manufacturer of max draw while gaming which are not the same as power draw when using fah on it. About the dummy plug, afaik you can use an old tvout cable to initiate the other display as well ( atleast I know for sure on Nvidia this works, not so sure about Ati ).
You're not alone though with the complaint about Ati's powerdraw while folding compared to Nvidia so I guess it's not even a matter of having the numbers exactly right but more about it being so much less efficient :(
