For me, the jury is till out on 1880/acards.
When I've been able to get the 4gb cache to work - performance has been - maybe - as good as the 1231 but as yet, I cannot say it is better.
What type of BBU should be used in ARC-1880?

check your error log on the controller. copy/paste if you find anything unusual...
there is no evidence of any trouble in the log.
i have had an issue where it almost seems like the battery is keeping bad info or something on the card myself twice. almost the same symptoms now that i think of it. each time i had to disconnect the battery, reboot the system, then power down and reconnect the battery. it was when i first got the BBU so i chalked it up to it being in the charge cycle. but it does seem that each time if it didnt boot initially that removing the battery fixed it.
is your bbu new? i bought mine off of ewiz and it looked used when it came in. i was worried initially that it was defective because of this, but then the issue went away.
EDIT: did it say firmware timed out briefly before the reboot cycle?
I got the battery directly from Tekram the same time I got the memory. It showed up as 88% charged when I got it and looked new. There was nothing unusual in the log at all which really leads me to believe it might be a conflict with the P6T. When I first got the P6T it wouldn't boot into windows installed on the 1230 until the mobo bios was updated. I'll have a new 1880 Monday that will eliminate the areca as the problem. NewEgg has the best customer service I've ever seen. They sent me a prepaid return shipping label and shipped the new card out overnight:)
I changed the stripe size from 64 to 128.

It's hard to find a 4GB Ram for ARC-1880, how about 2GB Ram?

its almost like if for some reason you have an errant boot where the firmware times out if you hve the battery on there, it wont reboot correctly unless you disconnect the battery. earlier i tried pushing the pci-e again, and it caused it not to boot, and i had to pull my battery so i think we are having same issue here. when i was pushign pcie before i didnt have the bbu so i didnt run into the issue. I think the battery is allowing the controller to 'remember' it isnt booting correctly, or that it is timed out, so it doesnt try again. maybe some type of protection feature. who knows?
I've been up and running all weekend without any incidents and the BBU is connected. I don't understand how but it seems like flashing the P6T onboard sas controller fixed the problem I was having???

Finally making a little progress with the Areca 1880ix-16.
The 4GB Unigen came yesterday, it seems to be working well. :)
Screen shot below is xp32, 12xAcard 9010, UD7/980@4.5, pcie@107, memory – slow
W7x64 might be a little faster as I have to use scsiport (not storport) with xp32
Controller settings may not be optimal, need to spend some more time with that.
Acards all are still set to sata-150, probably losing a little performance there.:(
The jury is still out as to if this is faster than the 1231 for Acards.
Access times are coming down nicely. :)

I had similar problems using Hitachi 15ks and I'm running on a P6T Deluxe. When I flashed the P6T to the latest bios to accommodate a Gulftown , I didn't flash the onboard SAS controller which was recommended but since I had it disabled, I didn't bother. Just a thought - did you try DISABLING volume read ahead cache and/or disk read cache? I think these would not be needed for ACARDS. The sequential might hurt though as a result.
Alternately, try conservative Volume read ahead.

Tried three times - 584, 509 and 368 are my xp start scores so far.
I think I could post a pretty decent score with the 1880/acards but I can't get over this one problem, any advice from the pcmark05 gurus? :)

TCQ is older than NCQ. What Areca calls TCQ might not be the old TCQ though.

The 1880ix has the LSI2208 ROC, correct? If so that's a massive improvement in the controller capabilities :up:
well, mixed bag there. as you see the areca is tuned for low QD performance with its storport drivers. they are just fantastic :) they do not scale as high as the 9260 though, which is tuned for high qd loads. of course the lower qd load is what is more beneficial to us, so excellent job from areca there :)
the arefcca handles differently with the scsiport drivers. l will do some comparisons and post those results to compare to these...

Yup, that's what I was commenting on. Only at work do I hit queue depths that the 9260 would shine in. That being said I haven't measured the queue depth of PCM05/Vantage yet. It's on my immensely long list of things to do :DQuote:

I have 1680ix-12 2gb and 1880ix-24 4gb. 1880ix is faster on everything. Raid-5 and 6 , build time rebuild time, lower latency! and sata3/sas2 :up:

well CT i think you've convinced me to dump one of my 1880i's and grab an 1880ix-12 w/ 4GB module in its place. main concern about the ix's was the integrated expander, given that the one employed on the 1680ix's was fairly problematic and a lot of drives didn't work with it, but this new one is solid and implementation is solid (based on some research and Q&A w/ areca for an upcoming review), its multipathed to the RoC so all 8 lanes are communicating at 6Gbps per. OT, i think I finally found the first flaw with my beloved HP SAS Expanders and that's that they only negotiates @ 3Gbps to SATA-III drives, whereas the integrated LSI expander on the 1880ix *does* negotiate a 6Gbps link to SATA-III drives. i'll have to confirm once I get it, its only a theory based on various benches of C300's I've seen.
anyway I guess there's still no consensus on best bet for 4GB module - based on everything I've read (here and elsewhere) it seems the parity chip(s) are pivotal in whether it works with the 1880ix or not. when you look at similarly spec'd modules, the presence or absence of the parity chip also seems the dividing line between whether its a $125 or $450 part. i know a guy at kingston, i might ask him what it would take for a small production run on a discontinued SKU. i'm 99.9% sure the news won't be good though.
Are there any newer (than posted) firmware files for the 1880 yet?
I tried the ones linked to the beta ftp site earlier and they don't seem to do much.

I've had that issue with the battery on a sudden shutdown. With the system off the speaker on the battery will tick. Unplugging the battery for a few seconds resets the card and allows it to boot again.Quote:

Bandwidth is okay - just over 3.2GB/S W, 2.7GB/S R.
winsat disk will NOT give me a 7.9 across the board with this card regardless of stripe size, read ahead, etc. No problem with the 1680. I know should forget about the MS stuff. Other things it does fly - things that matter most. Using 1880ix-16s here. All of 'em have displays attached to them, 4GB cache. BBUs not in my possession however the ones I use on the 1680s work fine. No change in speed with BBU as suspected possible, however. (longer flush times?)
It's a neat controller that's cheap (IMHO) for what it does.

OK I'm convinced the EVGA 762 does not like the 1880ix at ALL. No BIOS settings will get the card to initialize. (except in the top slot) Does little good when you have three video cards. LOL!
Even tried the brand new EVGA BIOS (77) released yesterday (full CMOS reset). 1880 just sits there with a rapid blue LED flashing in back. No beep from card on power up. System completely ignores it. :(

it's only a little disappointing that there is no benefit going subzero on GPU....it's supposed to be a full system benchmark and PCMARK05 does have some impact from higher GPU clocks. That's the only thing i would like to see change for the new version of PCMARK :)

you are definatly right, pcmv has a great deal more to do with optimizing your raid array...
in pcmark05 it is definatly at least 50% of your score (try getting much past 20K on a single optical drive), but it also has some nice components like scaling with graphics cards..
i really like pcmark vantage but thats my only gripe, i just run GPU on air in this benchmark because it doesnt seem to matter if I underclock or overclock my GPU, the end score hardly scales...
i will spend some time now to work on my pcmv efficiency before i rebench, i can see some areas where i am certainly lacking..

Server memory with DDR and DDR2 has always given me headaches in the past. I work as a Network/Systems Administrator. What we can see from the Mushkin module is that it is:
- Registered
- ECC
- Dual Rank
- DDR2-800
- 6-6-6-18
- x8 (8bit)
- but doesn't mention parity
Registered adds a bit of latency but improves signaling for better stability. Anyway, a quick swing onto Kingston's website shows two modules that matches this description:
- KVR800D2D4P6/4GEF
- KVR800D2D4P6/4G
The second one mentions Parity in the product description. Did a search on NCIX (I'm in canada) and they have it in stock: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=52...cture=Kingston
Did a search for KVR800D2D4P6/4G and areca 1880 online and found this:

If you search that model number inside, it mentions that someone is building a MacPro 12-core with Areca 1880ix-12 with this module. However a response to that says that the controller requires x8 (8bit instead of 4bit). The Mushkin/Proline module known to be compatible is x8, but the Kingston is x4. In fact, Kingston doesn't make 4GB single module with x8!
If anyone's brave enough, they can try the x4 from Kingston. I've never actually seen issues with x4 versus x8 on servers. I've only seen issues of dual or single rank being a pain in my behind. Those specifications in point form above is what you'll want to look for in a module (exact timings might not be a requirement).
I shall get my 1880 at some point, when I have the cash for it.

have u ever tried running PCmark05 with SSD(no acards or irams just ssds) only in HDD suite?
if u did can u post the results so i can explane to u the difference in ur config.
for me it scores ~220.000 on HDD suite with intels :)
