Rick!!! Those last few shots are absolutely amazing!
ahhh!!! It's coming together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :up::party::party2::party3::guitar::cheer::YIPPIE:
Awesomeness.
Your pictures never cease to amaze me and are only left behind by your incredible dedication to every detail. I'm loving every bit of the build, thank you for sharing it with us Capn'!
wow captain. i take a break from looking at builds and come back to this. simply stunning
Thanks my main man Callen. Hope you enjoy the wallpapers!
Thanks Graeme. Still debating whether if that 90 will stay there or move to the second card on top or altogether be replaced with a 45. Just trying get the tubing route just right.
I just realized I typed all that and didnt answer your question. lolz.
The tube that leads into the first (bottom) card is from the midplate below which leads into the pedestal. Pics soon!
Did away with the tape and I instead doubled-up on O-rings on the 45s. Seems to be working. However I am unable to stop playing with PTFE tape. It's like silly string crack on a roll.
I'm so glad I was able to hook up a talented modder such as yourself, GK. I've been a follower of your worklog and I'm sure whatever arrangements you have planned towards perfection will be spot on!
Thanks so much James! Can't wait to see what res is coming in for Hulk!
It's getting there, Vinas. We have some more stuff to do but yes, its is indeed getting closer to port. Thanks for your continued support. Helps me a lot!
Lol! Your screen pic cracks me up. (Yes. I'm 12 sometimes)
I'm so glad you have enjoyed my worklogs, NaMCO. That's a huge compliment coming from you! I have thoroughly enjoyed both Storm Sniper and The Project worklogs. Thank YOU for sharing with us!
Thanks Tox! Much appreciated me hearty!
I thought I'd put this bout with insomnia to some use and post a few pics tonight.
I'm kicking around on how to route the GPU loop and taking some pics as I go along.
I'm not too concerned about the restriction on the 90 degree inlet of the first GPU.
I'm more into having the fitting route the tubing in a more uniform way.
Then again, I'm known to shake it up at the last moment, but I'll be sure to share me decision in pics within the next update or two.
Wow. I just got sleepy rereading that. Note to self: Got insomnia? Read own post.
Shot of the Pedestal I'm trying to keep tidy:

The GPUs during leak testing (no leaks yay!).

The GPU loop's res during leak testing:

That's all for this update. I should have more pics showing some acrylic work and outfitting the front panel soon.
Thanks all! More to come.
It's just so beautiful.
Thanks mate for that insite.
But I'm hoping that the next lot of pics from the up coming photo shoot will help me out as to how this all fits together. :yepp:
I must admit when I looked at this photo I found myself scratching the side of my head (Humm I am thinking)
Where does this tube go to need that 90?
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S2...0/IMG_4698.jpg
I am not sure but I think I scratched the other side of my head when I first looked at this one to.
Why does the clear tube need a 45 degree fitting.
I know, you know, (draw 4) that I am not having a go at you at all, but please understand from my side I only see a small proportion of the rig at any one time
and man I'm still a little lost champ how it all fits together. :yepp:
The only thing I came up with, that makes any sence to me, is that the tubing was not in it's correct placement when the photo's where taken?
Am I even close.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S2...0/IMG_4686.jpg
love it!
do we know yet what's going in that top rectangle above the optical bays in the mountain mods front panel?
Rick, I've already said this but I love your straight line GPU setup
Thanks, Laine! I'm a huge fan of the lighting in your awesome photography!
Lol @ carc it. Had to ask wifey what that meant. (She's Aussie.)
For now, I'm using an old Tygon tubing leftover from me last build to leak test. So the placement of fittings and tubing isn't quite where they'll be in the final build.
The 90 fitting make the tubing route in a way that could work visually with what i'm trying to acheive.
The 45 on the Pedestal below will go straight into the 480 Rad. It's on a 45 and a shorter sized pass-through to have enough clearance for the Monsta rad.
Sorry to confuse you. I hope my little explanation above helps out a tad.
I shall post more pics to provide some kind of visual to hopefully help you clear out the head-scratching situation.
Thanks John...I haven't disclosed that publically yet because I only thought of an idea while I'm typing to you. lol.
It''ll be outfitted with power and reset buttons with a logo situation all mounted on a piece of smoked grey or opaque black acrylic.
Thanks, GK  That straight line setup took a while for me, but now it kinda grew on me.
I should have something substantial to show perhaps by midweek.
Arrr and thanks for the feedback all!
Two superpowers I want and what I would do with them:
1) Travel back in time
2) Push people over TCP/IP
What I would do is travel back in time to just before you took the last set of photos, stretch out my hand across the internet, and firmly (and rudely) push you about...10~15ft backwards. 'Cause then we would get to see the whole thing and go oh-that-loop-goes-there-this-rad-goes-there instead of close-ups which are just oh so terribly teasing.
Good thing I don't have superpowers. :D
...
:(
Thanks mate for that info I do appreciate it, the last thing I need is a bold spot.
Aussie wife hay, you my friend are a lucky man.
From one Aussie to another mate, say G'day to her, hay.
Haha, sorry Capt, I'm glad you have an Aussie wifey though ;)
Ha ! Too funny, Kibbs
Coincidentally, I just installed TOIP (Touch Over IP) over me network.
It's still in beta, but it allows me to digitally push you back. There are still some bugs to work out.
For instance, if I have TOIP running while having my FTP port open, it mysteriously opens iTunes and plays "I Touch Myself" by The DeVinyls at full volume. :p:
I thought I saw a flux capacitor on sale at eBay and a DeLorean on Craigslist.
Might be worth checking out if you're serious about the time travel thing.
The GPU loop was undergoing a leak test during those last shots so the tubing was pretty much all over the place not even seeing the light of a rad. Taking a full shot would have caused even more confusion.
Once the fittings are in its proper home and tubing will be at least in the same zip code as they will be in the final layout, I shall post full-bodied, centerfold pics.
Thanks Graeme and James  She extend her hellos to you both.

For almost two weeks now, I've been watching the rains rob my opportunity to do any kind of power tool situation since the great outdoors is my work area.
Having aluminum shrapnel flying inside the house is generally frowned upon so my only viable option is to wait for the rain and the thunder to quietly pass me by, Sweet Child 'O Mine.
I've been experimenting with several different types of tools to obtain straight cuts and rounded corners for a good while now.
(Just so you know, spraying a garden hose and pretending you're water jetting is way overrated, noneffective and pretty damn strange to people who may be watching.)
I've been watching Shazza's very awesome worklog closely
and I figured it's about time I post an update showing my little contribution on how I managed to cut my midplate.
I wasn't quite satisfied with how my cuts were coming out on some aluminum testing sheets using a jig ; too much deburring/sanding/filing/F-bombs was going to be involved even using a straight edge.
CyberDruid showed how to get amazing cuts with rounded corners by guiding a router on a template created using a table saw and a jig.
Since my plans don't include duplicating the same cuts and access to a table saw escapes me, I thought I'd post my two doubloons on how I managed to cut my midplate using a router, a drill bit and a couple pieces of wood.
The literal storms have subsided for now, taking the figurative one with it.
So I took the rig apart, and delivered the midplate to the operating table:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4718.jpg
These holes will be remade onto a piece of acrylic. For now we mask:
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4725.jpg
The bit to drill the corners:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4729.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4728.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4731.jpg
This particular model is interchangeable between the fixed & plunge base.
This pic shows the plunge base attachment:

Clamping straight, strong 2 x 4s to act as my guides:
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4754.jpg
One will be used to guide the straight cut:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4704.jpg
The other will be used as a stopper.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4706.jpg
I like tools that light up my life:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4759.jpg
Please note that these things can spin a sharp bit upwards to 25,000 revolutions per minute.
That's a lot of power and there is no Undo button when you make a costly mistake.
Should your future plans include the use of a router, I'd like to say a few words regarding safety:
Wear eye protection, ear protection, short sleeves but long pants.
Tie long hairs up, under a tight fitting cap, remove jewerly, key chains, hanging badges etc.
Don't wear open-toed shoes.
Make certain that all bits are firmly secure, clean, and sharp.
Please see this awesome safety checklist for more valuable safety information:
http://www.shopsmithhandson.com/arch...afety_tips.htm
Onward to the horizon:
I place the bit to cut just inside my penciled guide lines marked on my masking tape.
With a firm hold I feed the router at medium speed against the direction of the bit until the base comes in contact with the stopper 2 x 4 piece of wood waiting on the other end:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4733.jpg

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4739.jpg
Meet Zsa Zsa, the aluminum cutting router bit.
I call her that because when she's in the house, things are gonna get slapped like the hors d'oeuvres that they are:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4742.jpg
To be continued...
Good clean straight cut with minimal filing ahead of me:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4745.jpg
Started out with my BFF (Big Freakin' File) and work down to a smaller finer file:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4770.jpg
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4767.jpg
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4777.jpg
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4794.jpg
I'll be routing the sides down of a piece of acrylic either white (pictured) or black,
so that the exposed section of the acrylic sits up flush with the panel:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4797.jpg
Only three more holes and we're one step closer to getting the case powder coated:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4811.jpg
Thanks for checking in all! More updates soon!
How many holes per step?
Nice work BTW!
Another sweet update! Good to see you've pulled the router out mate, now get creative ;)
edit: i wasn't implying you haven't been creative of course, i just meant do some cool stuff with the router :)
Nice, Nice, Nice - thanks for sharing!!!!
(when you get the flux capacitor hooked up, please reach out and do my cuts :) )
And go back in time and convince me that I do not want the parts I bought!
Nothing but trouble getting these damn blocks :shakes:
Good update! very informative, and I like your router; it's impressive and looks as good as the work it does.
Nice work, Flint. I, too, prefer the router for this sort of work and used the same straight-edge method for my RoZip.
Very nice work on those corners w/ the file.
Really great work and again gigantic pics
The cut is faultless, nough' said.
Excellent work captain, very sweet.
I love working with the router, there excellent fun.
Incredible work with the file, anyone who's used it before knows it is no easy task and your results are pretty astounding.
*drools*
Nice blocks and really good attention to detail with the file. How long did it take you to file it to perfection like that???
thanks for the update BTW... still checking everyday!
Wow, great mod
matey :)
great update! really nice cut
Thanks Weev...Let's see...
...The midplate needs 1 more drill hole for wires to pass through to the pedestal and two more cuts for the tubing.
So I reckon that counts as 1 step.
Haven't figured out yet how many steps altogether before powdercoating, but I'd be one step closer.
Aye, main man Callen...it certainly is about time.
As far as the creative part goes, I'm looking to you to further corner that market as
you've got a strong handle on that as it is. :D
Let's chat.
Pleasure's mine, shazza.
I'll be watching closely at your build log to see which direction you'll be taking in cutting your midplate (hopefully not in reverse oopscouldn'tresistmybad.).
If anything I hope I offered some kind of assistance in helping you decide which tool that's best suited for you - router or not.
Thanks wez  Much luck to you in getting your last mcw60. That EK Supreme Tweaked red block still looks amazing to me.
Aye, Xion, I named those two pieces of wood Cheech and Chong. :D
Hopping in the Delorean with a working Flux Capacitor would reveal that they made an earlier appearance on page 5.
They guided the RotoZip to make the holes on the midplate back in October:
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/Su...0/IMG_3592.jpg
Appreciate the feedback, Xien  Glad you stopped by!
So are your builds, James. I'm still checking out pics from the Hulk. (Take more!) And thanks!
Thanks very much, Graeme...It's is indeed a great tool.
Currently using a routing table to shave off a couple of mm on pieces of acrylic.
We'll see how that turns out.
Thanks, Liderc. Yes filing can be tedious and repetetive but the results were worth it. Thankfully, the raw cut came out straight to begin with, making the filing situation a little easier.
Cheers Vinas...if memory serves, it took roughly about thirty minutes altogether. Thanks for your continued support!
Arrr, Beast!
Thanks, GK
*************
The verstile rotozip may make filing a little easier for the remaining cuts on the midplate:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4814.jpg
Thanks for all the comments all! More updates to come.
killin' me ... this is one build log where one does not want to miss the fine print. You boys with your routers and Roto-zippers are sure raising the bar (speaking of which - :toast: )Quote:
Reason: VOWEL MOVEMENT: i before e except after c
I was hesitant in posting pics or an update showing progress on the remaining cuts left to be made on me midplate, because frankly they were rather boring.
But it's Valentine's Day morning, pandora.com is nailing it by playing 3 songs in a row that I actually like, and the smell of bacon is in the air.
So what the hey, I say.
Furthermore, I had a little visitor inspecting my work and the shots I took of her came out pretty decent.
This is the hole for the wires of the components from the pedestal to pass through. It's name is Mini-Me.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4825.jpg
Although Mini-Me's edges came out smooth, I'll still be outfitting it with a C-CHannel (or is it a U-Channel?) edge molding for extra protection of the wires.
Hole had to be big enough for a 4-pin molex to fit through:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4831.jpg
It will be eventually concealed by the center aluminum bar that supports the mobo tray:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4832.jpg
My pet bearded dragon is scratching and jumping inside her tank. So I decided to give her an up close and personal look at the latest adventures of midplate mayhem.
If you were to ask me, she looks like she's smiling. I'll be bold enough to say that it's a smile of approval.
Meet Lilly, everybody!!
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4837.jpg
Inspecting. Smiling. Approving.
In. That. Order. :D
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4842.jpg
More to come!
Here I go, stalking your worklog again, but those cuts, and especially the photos of Lilly are just stunning! What a great poser she is.
lili is an awesome name for such a beast
O and nice build you really are an inspiration to me :toast:
Very cool pet--great pics of her! And I think, like everyone, I'm excited to see this build come together. A lot of detail going into this one.
wonderfull dragon :)
actually I thought you have parrot on the shoulder as a pet :D
Howdy Lilly! And...I agree with AK ^^
any more pictures of Lilly?!
How tall is that pipe?
Nice lizard!
Man i've wanted a bearded dragon since i was like 5! you lucky :yepp: and those shots make me glad i just bought a
50D, all stunners as usual. Oh, and nice mod too lol, but i like anything you post :p:
Man it's nice to finaly not be speed limited on the net anymore.
Now let the photo's flow!
Excellent work captain and thats one sweet looking bearded dragon mate.
Treat her well champ, your one very lucky crusty old sea dog.
Thanks Sharon! Stalk all you want, as I do enjoy and value your comments! (I've been known to stalk your worklogs as well.)
I'm pleased with the results of the cuts so far. And Lilly is indeed a great looking beardie. Well-behaved, hardy and unassuming.
It's an awesome feeling to know that I'm giving something back to the community from where I get my knowledge and inspiration from. Thank you for saying so, melle!!
Thanks, Xion  I'm pretty much excited myself. It's taking a while but we're getting there. Totally appreciate your continued interest!
Busted.
Knew I was gonna get called on that.
My only answer is:
That'd be too cliche`, me hearties. Savvy?
Heh.
Certainly!
Here's baby Lilly a year and a half ago.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/LilyBaby.jpg
Here's a shot of her basking in her terrarium I took yesterday.
She's still isn't full-grown, but she's a lot bigger.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4904.jpg
Ahoy, Wez....It looks to be just over 23 inches:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4908.jpg
Congratz on the 50D, Callen! That must mean we'll be seeing a post from you soon, right? Good times! :toast:
Yes. I am lucky. :)
We've had Lilly for a year and a half now and she's been nothing but a darling of a beardie.
Now that your surfing limitless, we're going to be seeing a project from you, right? Can't wait!
***********************************************
After seeing James's (dingdong555) Hulk build, I had to purchase myself one of IandH's new res.
It's truly a beautiful, well-made piece of craftmanship.
The spring load holders design is ingenious:

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4950.jpg
Thanks for checking in all! More soon...
that is an awesome res its so clean :D
after seeing your work.
I think i need to buy dslr camera too if I ever built my own water cooled pc so people could enough nice quality photos
The cut of Dragon that I did with my dremel for my project very similar to its :D
http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/2...ct05971.th.jpg
lol'd at the Pirate ring on your finger.
Great work here man, really interested in its out come!

Avast, sir Captain.
It appears there is a nasty wedging-effect with your video cards... They look like they are being spread apart and causing stress on themselves and PCI-e slots because of that BP connector.
I am referring to the picture of the pipe.
Nice idea with the cable routing, btw. Clean, efficient, and you can cut holes as needed if cables need to chill in the middle of the case for no discernible reason!
That's the spirit Rick! Beautiful reservoir!!! Will suit your build amazingly!
She's a freaking awesome pet!
Nice res, those clamps look really nice. Are they the spring loaded clamps?
Lilly is cool too. Looks like she is waiting for dinner to pop out of the mini-me hole.
I see what you mean Wezly about the cards.
I am not sure if it is just the angle of the photo or if the BP fitting are holding the cards apart more that they should.
But arr, is having a "nasty wedging-effect with your video cards", anything like having a wedgie while riding your bike down the freeway ( in between all the cars) during peak hour?
As for my project, that part is really bugen me.
I can say that, I have gotten quite a few of my parts together already.
In fact, I thought I had nealy gotten all my ducks lined up, when those damm birds got wise and moved the goal post on me.
So now I find myself waiting on the release date for the new mobo I want.
Also before I can really start putting my rig together I first need to build a desk in the front room for the PCs, plus to add to everything we have just started
to getting quotes in on re-doing the kitchen and the floors throughout the house,(not the bedrooms but)
So looks like it might be best to hold off a bit longer, Grrrrr
Just as well I have most of my parts but, hay. :ROTF:
I will give you the heads up when it all happens mate. :yepp:
Something that has been puzzling me. After several re-reads, I wanted to ask why you didn't use the Rotozip to do you rectangular cutouts. Obviously, they came out great with the big router- is this type of cut beyond the RZ's capabilities? Thanks for your help.
Aye, Melle, IandH doth bring cleanliness to the game :D
Coolness marx  Photography is just a hobby of mine. Modding makes photography fun and sometimes photography can make modding fun.
I've seen brilliant photos taken with point-and-shoots and even camera phones.
That's facinating work Ulysses!
Thanks, vista! (I can't wait either.)
I'll try to keep it interesting as we near the horizon.
Hi Wez! Good eye, me hearty. Aye. It is indeed nasty. It much worse looking in pics than in RL, but there definitely is a wedgie situation going on there.
Tis a shame too. Took me 3 days to rattle can that d-plug black and all.
I've pulled the cards out and have ordered a shorter BP Black Matte d-plug in hopes to relieve said wedgie:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4963.jpg
Thank for turning me on to those, James
Thanks, Vinas! Yes, those are indeed the spring loaded clamps. Very solid design!
I know about starting a build only once you're ready. I've saved some popcorn when it's time for the Graeme show.
Thanks Alexandr0s  I'm hardly the intimidating type; and neither is me bling. When Lilly is hungry on the other hand...lolz
So yes, shazza...
Me easy answer: Because I'm not as gifted as Charles. :)
The longer answer: A straight cut is completely within the capabilities of the RZ, with the right bit, it can even route fancy cutouts, dovetails, slots, etc.
I found that there are things the router can't do that that the RZ can. (Precise engraving for one. I heard its like maneuvering a jet airplane around a go-kart track).
Some may find cutting with the RZ easier to use since you can plunge into the work piece making the start of a cut and continuing your cut from there. The RZ can cut smaller pieces much easier since the footprint of the RZ is generally smaller than base of most routers.
Yes. How nice for you. But that doesn't answer my question, big mouth:
- Since he already has a router and purchasing a rotozip wasn't worth the cost of your marriage (I know you jest), I thought I'd share my adventures in making a straight cut using one.
- I was already working on routing acrylic, so it was just a matter of swapping out the bit for the straight cut using Zsa Zsa (the metal straight cutting bit).
- I lost my metal cutting XBit for the Rotozip. :( It was here somewhere. And like Mum says, "What? It didn't just grows legs and WALK out of here." referring to a pen she lost.
So my apologies Shazza. Didn't mean to cause any confusion. Using the router wasn't really purely out of personal preference but a little out of personal laziness.
It was also to show you what you can do given the tool you - oops sorry - hubby owns.
One more hole to go. I may look in my garage in one of those boxes I have yet to unpack and see if I can find the RZ cutting bit.
For now TIVO over a cold one wins.
Updates soon!
Aye, that thar be one nasty wedgie. Hope ye get it fixed soon.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S3...0/IMG_4950.jpg
Very Nice!
Talked to Ian the other day about using a couple in one of my projects. You should show him these photos
http://forum.nexthardware.com/749739-post1.html
re: SLI fittings-I'm hoping to give these a try. I thought you might like em as you can see your liquid go thru (would be nice w/ the blue I saw in the post round new year's "...borrowed, something blue")
Glad we were able to take care of that before it was a problem, or the rig was more-complete.
I'm having fun trying to serial my video cards right now (T_T)
Tubing is kinking....
Cpt I love your work man. Very nice and you know they make pills for that limp GPU you got going there.
Thanks for visiting, Bill! The grill is gorgeous.
Nice find, John! I'll be going the d-plug route for the cards but that link gives me an idea on a fourth res situation.
Thanks for pointing out my wedgie in public. lolz.
I've managed to successfully unwedgiefy!
I'm liking your 3 card configuraration with the anti kink coils
Thanks Huff, appreciate the feedback! lolz @ gratuitous anti-flaccid pill reference. I went the less medical route and managed to find a d-plug with a more suitable length.
*******************************************
A short update showing a little unwedgiefying procedure.
I purchased a shorter d-plug to replace the one currently being used on the cards:

Deployed:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S4...0/IMG_4976.jpg
Looks like we're good!
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S4...0/IMG_4969.jpg
Thanks for stopping by. More progress pics shortly!
Yay! No wedgies!
I was mostly concerned that you were wrecking those PCI-e slots and the threads on the acrylic tops... 'twould have been a sad day for WC'ing...
And thanks. The tubes are flattening out despite my best shaping efforts (T_T)
I EVEN USED ZIP TIES!
Can't wait for the rest of this monstrous monstrosity of a mountain mod!
much better now
I like those tiny levels ^_^ :D
Nice work mate, looks good.
Phew!!! Thank god the wedge is gone! That was driving me crazy, but I knew you'd get it fixed up right! Good work, sir!
(keep them coming)
your time limit for this build is Dec 21 2012 btw :D
Bro, i had to search three pages of worklogs to find yours again..whats up with that?
we demand updates!!!
Cheers me hearties...thanks for all the words of support and continued interest.
I've actually been all over the map with the build as of late ... routing acrylic to sit flush with aluminum holes, making a hatchway to gain access to the pedestal, getting a little high breathing in Goof Off because I forgot to put on me respirator, and working on an idea for an Instrument Panel situation.
The good news is progess is being made. I am taking pics as I go along and I shall post them soon! :cheer:
I'm taking my family out on a nice Sunday outting and heading over to MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) here in L.A., with sketchpad in tow, to further develop an idea I have in mounting/creating a drive bay/holder/cage situation.
Thanks for the visit!
I'll have tea and biccys prepared next time.

P.S. I really like this smiley:
:eleph:
Very much love this build more pics though!!! I need my fix:yepp::yepp::yepp:
Very nice work on the hatch, it'll look great when it's flush. Looking forward to a nice juicy update soon :yepp:
Looks good mate, I hope the hatchway is water tight!
Hope you find what you need at MOCA and had a good time.
Hay, I have a cupa, blond, no legs. (white, no sugar)
Can't wait to see the Pirate touches that will be a part of this build. You know it's gonna be good stuff.
 you are right mate. Since I have started building my own system. I got a dslr recently. I cant get enough of my camera too. I really enjoy taking pictures. Do check out my worklog and tell me how could I make it better for rest of the xs members to enjoy.
Nice progress Rick. :)
Looking forward to hearing of your visit to MOCA and of what inspiration you gathered from there.
I'm glad your GPU is now even-keeled my friend.
Keep up the great work Rick - Oh... and just say "NO" to Goof-Off. Sure the high is great but that stuff will fry your noodles!
:eleph:
wait there's an aquatube too? (I've got a white delrin one waiting to show up...)
Thanks .:R32! An update is indeed in the works. Kinda all over the place as of late, but planning to share stuff minus all the chaos. lol
I lied. A d-plug wasn't all that was needed to help "things along."
I hired a female Thai escort to provide a private "massage" for the lower GPU and it looks as though a solution aroused.
Thanks, callen! Flushing Hatches is going to be the name of the next horse I bet on at the tracks.
I hope to bring some juice on me next update. "Hope" being the operative word.
LMAO Classic! Blonde no legs. Gosh. I'm 12 again.
I SO want to say that at my next visit to Starbuck's and see if either the cashiers give me:
A.) the whole "we-hear-that-20-times-a-day" courtesy laugh or
B.) a blank stare
lol
Thanks, Sharon! I'm hoping not to go cheesy overboard with the whole pirate theme. Perhaps just a hair short of a bowl of nachos.
Heyas, marx. You may already know this, but JIC, there is a great photography section here on XS with really inspirational work. I shall check out your worklog and provide some honest feedback.
JIC stands for Just In Case. I have no idea why I first acronymed it. lol
Thanks Charles! "NO" to Goof-Off it is. Yes, the only fried noodles for this kid is when I go to Won Kok Chinese restaurant and order their Seafood Crispy Noodle dish. Deee-lish! (Yes. That's their real name.)
John! Just wanted to thank you again, for that off-the-hook link you sent earlier. Can hardly wait for those!
************************************************** ******
I intend to share a little of my experience at MOCA on my next update.
Until then, thanks all!

It is fantastic how well you're sticking to your theme, love it. Bring the juice I'm waiting (for your next update)!!
been a while since i stopped in here but its looking great as usual Captain.
a little OT. i dont know about you but I cant wait for the UFC card out in Abu Dahbi. its going to be a great list.
I started off with a gray, 12" x 12", 6mm piece of acrylic:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S5...0/IMG_5059.jpg
Made some really awesome pencil guides and notes to self. Pic may not do it justice, but those chicken scratches you see on the protective paper were actually the single most awesome thing in the world.
I just had really bad lighting :p: :

I may use this lens tint to darken her up a bit...

Routed 1.5mm off all around the sides.

Meet Sonic the Acrylic cutting bit:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S5...0/IMG_5068.jpg
After routing the perimeter of the rectangular acrylic piece, I used Sonic to cut out the rest of the excess.
This acrylic piece will fit over the rectangular midplate hole.
Holes will then be drilled into it to allow the tubing to pass between the pedestal and the hull.
Sonic makes the edges of the acrylic look fashionable:

Created a template during the design phase showing measurements of the holes where the compression fittings will be situated.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S5...0/IMG_5110.jpg
The template was transferred to the working piece:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S5...0/IMG_5112.jpg
Followed this template for an opaque, white piece of acrylic situation, but it's looking like the gray acrylic situation will be the color I'll be using:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S5...0/IMG_5087.jpg
Held my breath to see if it fits flush:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S5...0/IMG_5113.jpg
Exhaled at seeing the results! Completely happy with how perfectly flush it fits:

Chuck doing his thing:

A side note here. It was at this moment, my iPod started playing Marilyn Manson's cover of "You Spin Me Round".
It was seriously freaky perfect. (It really was. )
I took that as a sign that I'm doing good and that I should continue with my bad self:

Open up your lovin' arms
Watch out, here I come
You spin me right round, baby
right round like a record, baby
Right round round round"

Ok. The pic below shows the underside of the acrylic piece with marks showing where I'll be placing the pass through fittings.
This measurement had to be very precise since the compression threads had to line up perfectly with the pass-through threads. I needed a way to see if the actual holes that were drilled were aligned with my center marks on the masking tape.
I eyeballed it by shining a light from the other side to see if me marks were gtg:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S5...0/IMG_5152.jpg
I used a Forstner Bit to make the flat bottom holes for the pass-throughs to sit and fit snug as a bug in a rug:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S5...0/IMG_5127.jpg
Flat bottom wood test:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S5...0/IMG_5052.jpg
It makes a 25.40mm hole which is just right for the pass-throughs to fit tight and cushy. (25.40mm = 1inch, but speaking in millimeters makes me sound like I know what the hell, I'm talking about):
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S5...0/IMG_5156.jpg
Drilled down to leave a thickness of 1.5mm so the threads of the compression fittings and pass-throughs could make enough catch:

Flat bottom hole for the pass throughs:

A pass through "sinking" into its new home:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S5...0/IMG_5193.jpg
The exposed top part with fittings:

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S5...0/IMG_5171.jpg
Removed the masking on both sides to see how it all looks fitted into the hole. I'm quite pleased in how in turned out:

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_QLiEm5wyerY/S5...4/IMG_5203.jpg
It isn't quite mounted with epoxy just yet. I'll have to remove it as I continue putting the finishing touches on the hatchway I'm creating.
That update shall be posted soon!
'Til then, thanks for hanging out for a bit!
I had to run outside at one point to grab me face protection before returning to my dry sheltered area where I was working. I dropped it enroute.
I thought it was a pretty cool shot sitting there in the fresh rain covered pavement:

*lyrics from Dead or Alive's track, "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)"
WELL. DONE.
My God all you guys with your routers, fantastic work man.
EDIT: Last pic gives me an Equilibrium/Minority Report vibe.
Holy $h!zz burgers!! That's an awesomely wicked idea for the pass-through fittings. It looks like the bits are tapped
straight into the acrylic which looks damn nice. Quality quality quality work cap'n.
I found it quite difficult and time consuming to make the acrylic res in my project sit flush with the aluminum and
you've pulled it off beautifully! Not to mention you must have rounded off the corners by hand, how else could you
round-off corners with a router??
And, of course, the pics are all stunning as usual. You can have all the gold stars charles gave me, and some :)
(sorry charles lol)
Ahhh it feels good to get my fix
Ahhh, the wait was worth it. Knew you were planning something sneakily good for us all. You just REALLY don't want that ugly bottom of those pass through fittings to show, do you? Your new creation looks perfect.
What a full chapter ... we've got an action shot of Chuck, Marilyn Manson spinning, a drop in appearance by Sonic & Forstner, The Minority Report, and those awesome pencil guide drawings ... a heck of a way to start the week!
You've already got gold stars, and  just isn't enough - so this one gets 5 of these:
:eleph: :eleph: :eleph: :eleph: :eleph:
Love the row of BP comps
Where will they go?
just perfect man, brilliant job :up:
amazing update. that pic of the face shield is awesome. if that was an ironman mask, i think you'd be getting paid a :banana::banana::banana: load of gold doubloons so that some studio could use it as an advertisement imo.
Excellent work mate, Outstanding Quality as per the norm with you Champ!
I do like the way that the BP fittings are recessed as well, very smooth. :yepp:
Hey Cpt.
Looking really nice. :)
Oh Jesus, i'm beginning to be scared to come into this thread. This is becoming Godlike, real real real NICE work Cap'n!
A true temple of awesomeness, your work is remarkable. Congratulations, i cannot express how anxious i am to witness the final images ;)
 New acronymed, you might have create a new acronymed people might use in future, you may never know.
I am looking forward for your honest opinion mate. My ears are open to listen to your advice. I am still stuff with few components I need to get and then I will concentrate on building the system. Hopefully, you enjoy my build as you are letting us enjoy yours.:)
gogo i want to see a next big upgrade and a fullshot of the case plz :)
Amazing work, that row of fittings is so sexy.
holy crap.
Will YOU adopt ME? :p:
I saw that your bit was named sonic before I looked at the bit. Makes perfect sense haha.
Holy shiznat, that's insane man! Pure awesome craftsmanship and I'm really diggin' that last shot! You should print it, it'd make a nice picture in your workshop ;)
Keep it up Capt!
^^ yeah, I forgot to mention, last picture is really dramatic :D
man that's gorgeous. I had always wanted to cut fan holes into a pedestal top and then make pass thrus w/ a piece of acrylic covering the 120mm fan hole, then back light the acrylic piece some color.
what's Sonic's the bit's trade name?
BTW-those fittings i had mentioned earlier from bitspower-where one bought the acrylic tube and then the o ringed sides for SLI-ing are now for sale at performance-pcs. probably excessive for me (as I have some d-dens but mostly as i don't dye my water)
That's an Oscar caliber update Rick - awesome stuff!
Speaking of which, you should consider doing a video update sometime. I bet you could create a very cool and highly entertaining "video worklog".
Think about it at least. :)
