Difficulty Factor Of This Board Is "10" (grin)

the memory is a bear to set once you go beyond reasonable levels for a dual core and a Quad core, like mine with dual L2's!

i went from 470 fsb to 475 and it required a change in PL level and DDR2 Comp Reconfig...it appears that a 20 fsb jump is going to require to adjust the cpu skew control, mch skew and possibly the cpu pll...i was able to use 1.8v for cpu pll...never could do that before.

also, it appears that cpu skew and mch skew might require a 200ps difference...right now i am using 200ps for the cpu skew and 400 for mch skew.

i am trying to find the balance of memory settings and those skew controls.

it would have been nice for biostar's engineers to list all these changes in the bios in a row (on one page) like gigabyte does for the X48 boards.

Hi guys first time poster. I just checked my New TPower Biostar and there is lots of gooey white stuff used on the heatsinks. Way to much goo for proper heat transfer. So the heatsinks are easy to remove. Hope that helps. I am just switching from the Abit Pro35. I have quietly been stocking Ace.:)

Its 16GB ;) 4GB modules :D I even have them at 450 1:1 now for DDR900

This board needs a ton of bios work, warm booting is an issue after a bios change, psu has to go off then on and it boots, tRD and TRFC changes can force the board to non boot and actually look completely dead.

Has anyone else noticed all this?

The only DDR2 Comp Reconfig witch work here is number "3" . PL was set to 8-9-10-12 and 15 i can't see any deference instability remain

I've found that, with the FSB set to 490 on my board, I'm more stable with the clock skew and driving control values on auto than with any of the suggestions that I've seen here.

This board seems to be a massive OCer, I'm very impressed so far. It's got a huge VDroop, but I've always been a fan of that anyways. I'm of the camp that keeps the power options enabled anyways, so it stays at lower voltage for 16 out of 24 hours of the day.

Does removing the heatsinks to replace the paste void the warranty on these biostar mobos? I've got a ton of Arctic Alumina sitting here from the swiftech stuff that I bought, and I wouldn't mind applying it if it'll keep my warranty fresh.

thank you for the heads up....... Maybe some MX-2 on my nb/sb will allow me to get to 600fsb. I'm almost there but seems like the heat is holding me back. I'm pretty sure there is enough paste on my nb for three or four boards (that's usually how manufacturers spread it on there).

i presume biostar could make a case of it but if the paste isn't showing, then they would not even suspect...i doubt they would pull the heatpipe to check.

what model cpu are you currently using on this board?

definitely a lot of bios work needed especially for the QX9650....my E8500 was a tad easier to manipulate the bios settings to get it stable to 520 FSB.

I Think I Got It Stable For 490 Fsb @ 8x For My 9650

i've been working overtime on getting to 500 fsb for my 9650...i am currently at 490...i finally smarten up and used the built in Memory test....i was able to find the memory settings and cpu configurations to make it pass the built-in Memtest

i just dual boot installed Vista64 Ultimate, alongside XP, to see if that OS is more tuned with this 710 bios...it installed at 490 FSB @ 8x without a hitch...once i install SP1 on it, i will install the various benches and re-run them.

I noticed that the GTL Refs with the "optimal settings" on my board are .63/.67 respectively. I'm able to run stably with a lower FSB voltage after turning them both to .67. It seems odd that they're not the same by default. Both of the other S775 mobos that I have here default to .67 on both. I'm running so far with 1.34 VID and 1.3 FSB Termination at 3.92. Maybe it's time to give 4.0 another try...

that is different because 45nm processors were designed to work at 63%...now, that might be for the Wolfdale and the Yorkie could be different, or higher!

looks like my Yorkie, QX9650, working at 63% GTL REF, is limited to 480 FSB to function within windows...Prime 95 is going on right now at 63% GTL REF...doing nicely after 30 minutes...at 490 FSB (same multi, 8x) it would freeze or drop 1 or 2 cores out after 5 minutes.

It doesn't really make much sense to me that they would have different values by default. Why would one die be set to .63 and the other to .67? I'm able to run for 7 hours at 490 with both at .67, at which point one core fails prime. The other 3 were still running FFTs at the 10 hour mark.

Both heatsinks have that crappy turdy, spongy paste especially on the NB. If you get a chance check out the architecture of the NB. Really doesn't look good for disipatting heat. I'm able to leave everything on auto for 400 with my q9450. Once I approached 450, it became necessary to (along with the other obvious voltage changes) adjust the MCH GTL to .64 to prevent bios corruption and lack of post.

i have my bios settings on page 1 for the E8500...it should help you get on your way...

the core temps that you read from realtemp or coretemp can be inaccurrate at the lower end of the scale...remember, those are there to throttle or shut the processor down, not to give accurate temps at the lower end.

my QX9650 have two cores about 6-7C lower that the first two cores...and..that stays the about the same when i Prime 95 it.

i am going to pull mine off very shortly...just finding the top end of my 9650...right now, non prime 95 is going to be 4320...it will run Hyper-PI 32M (one core) with no problem...but...my vcore is up there to hold that mhz; about 1.57v...Vdoop is not bad for a dual core (about -0.024)..i presume it will be larger for a quad like mine...i will see if i can log it before i strip the board down to check the heatpipe.

Need any advice on going past the 475 480 with a E8400 and G-skill PC6400 memory. Board does not want to play nice after that point, though it has booted into windows desk top but unstable. Not tried to lower the multi much though...........

How far have you backed your memory timings off so far? What voltages are you running? What cooling?

although i did not set MCH GTL REF (64% a good start) other than 'auto' for my E8500, it might behoove you to give that a try!

don't forget to set a Performance level of 9 or 10 once you are up by 480 and beyond FSB.

also, i have bios images of the bios for my E8500 on the first page of this thread...take a look.

if all fails, i would flash the bios (in DOS) with bios 710 again...HERE IS WHAT I DID TO FLASH....i found once doing that, my QX9650 worked better and the DDR2 RECOMP Configurations worked better...using the same GSkill as you, i was only able to use number 3 before the flash.

Replaced the crap with OCZ Freeze. Also used 3mm bolts for remounting.

I will try to measure real Vcore with DMM ASAP and report back. Maybe the board needs Vdroop mod...
Also I have heard, OVP kicks in at ~1,84V some cases. This I can't test before some LN2 run...

Layout is quite good. I like the angled SATA ports and CMOS jumper top of them. Power/reset buttons are also very nice.
Tho, the extra molex for PCIe is badly placed...

(Worth to mention I'm not AMI BIOS fan.)

The LED screen is good for POST/BIOS info, but the temp reading is ~15C lower than with RealTemp (E8500).

I hadn't time to try OC, but a quick test got me 6x601 booted to win and spii1M up to 610FSB. (NB ~1,4V; FSB ~1,6V; PLL 1,6V)

Any help you guys can give me just some basic do's and don'ts with this board would be helpful. I would normally take the time to figure it all out myself but I am anxious to get this e8600 under xtreme conditions. I have a brand new e8600 I just loaded a quick 15gb xp32 partition on a raptor. And flashed to 7/10 . I am getting some dry ice tomorrow.
Just finished insulating the board.

I'm so spoiled by asus bios. I can't remember how the Ami bios goes. I'm basically diving into a pool headfirst with no idea of the water depth! I sold all my good ddr2 and only have a new 1 kit of Crucial Tracers from a rma which ive never used. I have a new cpu i have no idea what its capable of, then throw this board into the mix and you can see where I'm going. I see theres no oc profile option to save settings in the bios. so there's going be a lot of cmos jumper jumping around. I gathered a lot of notes and pasted them into notepad from this thread. Does driving control help?

If you need help with voltage settings and are confused by the voltage in the ami bios (+.25 etc. ) boot up into the bios. load to optimized settings. In cpu settings disable c1e etc. run at max multi. save F10. reboot go into bios advanced/hardware health configuration. take a picture or write down the default voltage settings for your hardware. Now you have something to work with. It should show your correct voltages at the bottom of the screen in the voltage options. If it doesn't try the steps I just showed.

Here's what I have so far from this thread, lemme know if I missed anything. Maybe it's time to make a quick start guide for this board?

Strange thing is that with PL9 I got better timing than with PL8 before it crashed ???
I had to relax the performance level to get over 530. Try 10 or 11.

For 600 fsb - I used rcomp config 2, set PL manually in bios to 10, left timings at auto/spd, boot at 580, then in windows use setfsb to 600fsb. Then once you're in you can drop to PL 9 with memset if you want.

Here's 6.06ghz 1m with e84
I had the same troubles as you, with corrupted bios and not being able to post over 450fsb.
I used the AMI bios recovery method to bring my board back to life.

I thought the same as you more volts needed, but its not.

Changing the MCH GTL REF voltage from AUTO to 0.64xVTT got me over the 450fsb hurdle.

I am at 460fsb, occt 1hr stable after changing that setting, give it a try

NB/ SB voltage at 1.088 (+0.100v added to Chipset Voltage)
FSB voltage at 1.104 (+.0100v added to FSB Voltage)

Honestly mate, try it

Vcore i left @ auto in bios so the high volts
ddr +.6v
chipset +.35
FSB +.35
CPU PLL 1.6v

set MCH GTLREF to 64%

Nope, just as shown with clean boot.
BTW, I had noticed many screenshots with the cpu skew thingy set to 200ms. When I tried this my machine would not boot. So, I'm thinking not to use this with quads.
Basically auto on everything except setting divider to 1-1, 64 on the Mch, PL9, no finetune, 1.55v to NB and FSB, 2.3 to ddr, 1.48 VCore

Bad stuff happens everytime I try to tweak a bios setting out of the auto setting - so when in doubt, leave it in auto including strap and all ram settings except PL-9/10.

I think you may not get to 500 stable without using some other ram unless maybe you try 6-6-6-18. It is just so damn sensitive to the ram when using a quad. I tried 4 sets, and the Mushkin 6400 was very much like your GSkill 8000 whereas that same Mushkin would run at 525-550 topside on the IP35XE w/8400 with a 5/6 multi. As mentioned the Dominator 8500 could not break 400 on this board while it would run 500+ on the IP35 w/8400

What happens when you do 1 stick single channel?

yeah, i found 1.6v cpu pll as non workable the other evening...i leave that now at 1.5.

as for the C1E, i noticed there are two options in the bios that need to be disable to keep your voltage from dropping....the 1st "C1E" is under the "Advanced" tab in 'CPU CONFIGURATION'...the 2nd "C1E" enable/disable feature is under the 'O.N.E.' tab..look in "CPU CONFIGURATION"...very strange to have two C1E settings...anyway look in those two spots.

I was benching 3D last night at 575fsb and my settings are close to what you're advising.

@mattkosem: If Ace's settings don't get you stable try mine:

CPU SKEW 200ps
MCH SKEW 100ps
Driving Control 800mV

PLL voltage 1.6
NBV .350
fsb .325

Memory AUTO
PL 11 (you should be able to do 10 or 9 between 500-530 if you have good ram).

That's all I remember off the top of my head.

These setting are real picky so be prepared to spend some time trying to find out what works for you.

I'm a knob where in the bios is this? Also I freaked out when I found memtest built right into the bios:up:.

My settings so far and I have gotten it up higher now but not stable around 515 FSB.
Cpu,water, +.400, E8400 temps on the board show 30ish
NB +.150

my mem devider now is to high for the ram @around 1040 or so? So I set it to auto.
Thats about it, I turn most CPU features off. I have tried bumping the GTL ref to the first setting, will try the next one also.

Nevermind. I don't need help ;) no clockgen. right from bios.
550x10 was the max I could get from cpu on d.ice. nothing exciting. There are a ton of dudes on HW bot with e8600s well over 6ghz. This cpu didn't turn out to be the best -0 clocker. I tried every setting you can imagine.
ram will easily do 600mhz cas 5 but this was my sweetest spot. THis cpu is going on ebay tomorrow.

recommendations in red

you are missing "w to w delay (same rank)" which is normally 4 but set it to 5.

if this does not do it, you will need to list from top to bottom in your post starting with voltages, CPU and MCH GTL REF settings along with skew settings and then top to bottom with memory settings...

it is the only way to narrow your problem down...we need to see the whole picture, not just snippets.

X48 (ddr3) AGAINST P45 (ddr2)

i thought this was interesting comparison.

i did a PCMARK 2005 bench on the IP35 Pro and then ran it against Gigabyte's X48T-DQ6 (ddr3)...as you can see, the X48 was ahead anywhere between 0 to 8% in the four categories....all the hardware was exactly the same except for the obvious ddr3 memory on giga's board.

what i see now, the P45 chipset is just about X48's equal...the obvious difference is the PCIe 2.0 bus speed..the X48 has 16x link speed for both 16x slots while the P45 offers only one full 16x speed...if you put it into the crossfire mode, the link speed drops to 8x for both 16x slots..you really do not see a big drop with the video card at 8x speed...graphics speed declines only 6% in performance...you kind of get faked out when you see a 8x linked speed for the P45 in the crossfire mode and then observe 16x link speed for the X48...it doesn't even correlate to even coming close, obviously, to a 50% drop.;)

reason i mention this is for users like myself who want to use the 2nd 16x PCIe slot for a raid card like the areca raid card (8x card)....so...i have to set crossfire mode to make the areca card operational, at least on the Biostar board.

EDIT:...need to add the reason for a higher PCMARK 2005 score...mostly due to my new WD Veloci-Raptor drives in Raid 0

I initially had problems with Crossfire, but that was just because, in my stupidity, I was only changing one jumper instead of all nine. For some reason my mind just couldn't fathom that all those red things needed to be moved...;)

My biostar is completely dead now it just show a FF code , restart once and again show the FF code no beep nothings , Tride toremove the battery over 8 hours and to clear the CMOS but no luck , any one got similar issue is it the MOBO or CPU dead . too bad i don't have another motherboard or CPU to test .

try to find a WHQL (windows lab tested driver) approved driver.

EDIT:..could be your vcore is not high enough or your memory timings need to be refined (slower)...try switching PL to a higher number within windows before running the game.

Thanks for notice but , Removing the battery and clearing the CMOS do not help , moreover i placed a boostable flash disk with the bios inside and AFUdos in autoexe , but the motherboard do not even reach the USB disk (USB light is off) , I also used floppy disk but it also do not light , I tried a PCI card and again nothings .
Any why how to clear the bios or to force the reflash it may be using pin or somethings similar ?? .
CPu FAN work and post lead show FF and notings in the screen :mad:

Yes only one memory stick installed , i tried OCZ and Geil ram the same result .
Nothings , i just power the motherboard CPU fan spin and i am getting FF code , later after 5 or 6 seconds the motherboard shut down then power up again directly with FF code and in this time it remain working with FF code no beep no display nothings ,

I'm running the 710 bios, 2x2gig G.Skill, 8x500 with a E8500. I have both the C1E and Intel Speed Step disabled, but at idle, CPU-Z is showing the cpu multiplier going to 6x. Did I miss something?, or is the board flakey, or the bios flakey?

if you tried holding down the "Cntrl+Home" keys while powering up and the floppy does not come alive, then you have to RMA the board...you have a bad bios chip.

there are two "CPU Configuration" categories where C1E shows up...just make sure both are disabled.

P45 Comparison

here is the latest image of PCMARK 2005 with the same raid drives attached to an Areca Raid PCIe 8x card...same memory was used on my Abit IP35 Pro, along with the same 9800 GTX and the same QX9650 cpu.

this completed test is slightly lower than Gigabyte's X48T-DQ6 (ddr3) board by about 400 total points...the difference is graphics and memory scores.

all the benches were run at 4 ghz at the same FSB except for the Biostar board where i had trouble holding (stable) 5:6 memory strap (DDR-1068) so i decided to use 470 FSB (8.5x) and use 1:1 memory strap with fairly tight timings along with the QX9650...biostar obviously needs to tweak the bios some more for the straps and overclocking stability.

the very bottom slide shows the WD Veloci-Rapto drives...they made a difference of about +900 points more in overall system performance.

EDIT:...i should add: if i did not have to set crossfire to allow my Areca Raid card to work, i would had the first 16x PCIe slot working at 16x link speed...then, i would be ahead or at least equal with the X48T (ddr3) board.

Can someone tell me how to properly increase the VCore, im used to my AMD build where i can increase it simply by entering the number, but with intel im a bit lost, it has "+, and - numbers"

RIght now my CPU VCore is i think, 1.17V which option d i choose to increase it by small increments? -50 or +50 ???

enter the "voltage configuration" on the "O.N.E." page...you have to switch it to manual overclock...once there, the very first entry is the Vcore...increments for this board is in 'plus' or 'minus' increments.

other intel board makers usually allow setting the vcore by selecting an actual numeric number within the design limits of the board.
