Hey vapor I got atm, 2x S-flex 1600rpm on my TRUE, would it be good to replace them by 2 x Zalman ZM F3? I need to replace my 2 exhaust fans ( 1 rear ) / ( 1 @ side for the VGA) anyways, so it is either the zalman or the Scythe going there, i got atm the Nexus but I find them abit "weak""
Who said that the Papsts are hard to find. There are lots of them around. You may not find their prices attractive, but there is an ample supply. And its not just the 4412 FGML that's around. There are other models.
Here are my impressions of the Zalman fans.
No scientific data, just my own experience.
On default (12v) speed they move a good amount of air but are what I would consider loud in a case. However they come with a resistor that you can place in-line to slow them down from 2000rpm to around 1100-1200rpm which mostly silences them. The airflow is quite diminished but they are very good for building a quiet system.
I am not sure that they are much better than the NZXT 120mm case fans that I removed though...those are surprisingly good and upon inspection look almost like a Zalman clone.

Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000 vs Panaflo L1A
This is a medium speed fan vs a low speed fan.
Now this isn't what you would consider a real hot CPU. I don't have any real high clocks to test with yet but it shouldn't really matter. I also could have used Orthos if I really wanted to test temps as it gets the cores a good 5c hotter on average but I was only testing this while I was already testing for stability with OCCT so it didn't take any extra time. Multi-tasking ;)

The Sharkoon seems to produce roughly the same results. I can't say one is better than the other because the temperatures reported by Core Temp were within 2c higher and lower throughout my OCCT 30min load test. Both fans hovered the CPU around the 50-52c range. My conclusion is there isn't a big difference. To be honest, the load temps with the Sharkoon actually reached 53-54c however the ambient temp in the room also had increased 1-2c by that time.
Sound wise, surprisingly the Sharkoon is not a lot different. In open air it is louder, but inside the case it sort of fits right in and it is not any louder than the Panaflo. It also does not make the little clicking noises that the Panaflo L1A does.
Final decision will be made when I get the Corsair 520HX in to get rid of the power supply noise but I think I like the Sharkoon Silent Eagle better. It just sounds really smooth and is not annoying at all. I'm surprised it didn't have a bigger effect on my temps though. I also did some quick testing on stacking CPU fans. I took my 120x25mm NZXT case fan (very very quiet and decent air) and put it on top of each of these two fans during testing and both times I dropped around 2-3c off of my full load temp without adding much noise. It also helps by creating a longer funnel to draw the air from. You essentially end up with a 120x50mm "dual fan". It would work best if they were both the same type and speed though. I want to mark off and cut a custom opening right where these "stacked" fans would reach to on the case window.
One more thing to note, the Panaflo L1A is a 38mm fan while the Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000 is a 25mm fan and it shows. The Panaflo is a lot thicker and quite a bit heavier too.
Anybody want to see a lopsided comparison? Best vs. worst.

And, YES...the fan really was spinning at that last data point. So slowly I could visibly track it with my eyes, no more than 100RPM. AND IT STILL MADE NOISE! No measurable airflow though.
I'm so glad I got the san ace. I broke one by mistake though. Thats a big whoops! I have 2 (waiting on 3 more) on my radiator right now and it keeps my temps 6 degrees cooler than my artic cooling fans. I am very glad I didn't touch the sunon. WOW.
Ever thought of testing any of the fans that push 200CMF while still only being 120mm? I know they can't be as silent, but wow, thats a lot of air movement.

That is quite an improvement! Those San Ave fans seem to be worth all the hype they are getting. Now I just need to find out if I can run them quieter :(

The San Aces can easily run lower than 5V. They can start lower than 5V even. That last data point is 5V though.
Previous results are not really comparable to this set (very different environment). They're roughly comparable, but really, I wouldn't compare them. BUT, the San Ace 1011 is a standout ;)
Around 26dBA on the new scale is inaudible from a foot away. At 5V, these fans are awesome. So awesome that they're what I'll be running on ALL my HSFs in my upcoming twin-system build (link in sig), even at $20 a pop.
I really don't know much about A.C. Ryan fans, but I would feel safe betting that like every other form-over-function fan, they aren't at the top of the pile. (they may still be good, like Yate Loon LED fans, but I'd be shocked if they were great)

Now Today I got a package in the mail -->San Ace 172mm Model 109E5712Y5J04 I also aquired the data sheet (not sure if thats what you would call them maybe "Specs") it is a 5 blade metal body housing 12V 2.3A pluged that one into the power supply and it pushed a lot more air and was quieter than the Sunon. I will see if i can post the specs on the San Ace 172. Also don't see it in the data sheet but the Rep. told me ...........Max.CFM: 282 CFM

The San Ace sounds very nice....I've really taken a liking to their fans. But damn, a 3800RPM 172mm fan is not quiet no matter how you dissect it, lol.
I'm not sure what the green wire on the Sunon would be.....a 36W PWM fan doesn't sound right, but I guess it is. :shrug:
Those are what, 320CFM 120x120x38mm fans? Gonna be loud man....lol. And yeah, very little public info about the PSD series of fans....they're OEM-only it seems.

Basically, after like...60-70 fans, I'm pretty sick of it. And more importantly, I think I've been able to highlight some really good fans for XSers and also show which ones to avoid. I obviously didn't get to test EVERY fan on the market, but c'mon.
No worries, I didn't 'miss' any of my promised fans....just got through the last fan tonight (yes, I was confident that the last remaining two would neither beat the San Ace or lose to the craptastic Sunon when I posted that graph, I was right). But I'll be back at school and will be putting my focus there. Data will be up shortly....I want to do it a little differently this time....there will be many more graphs showing what people want to know (not that the data wasn't there before, but now it'll be easier to see the data compared that you want, IMO)
If the market changes enough by next summer, I may do another round, not sure yet. A possible job I may be taking could compromise any future fan testing as well....;) (not that I would lie about the data, but working for a company that makes fans as well as independently testing them would be somewhat of a no-no in my book, just on principle)

I do have one question. When undervolting the San Ace 1011 Fans, did you ever notice that if you use them as a pull on a radiator, no matter what you did, they are still audible? Just wondering....
I have no equipment other than my ears, but I can clearly hear them from 3 feet away, even though my case separates me from them. This sounds right or do I have a few fans that just aren't up to snuff? They are used btw.
At 3 feet away pulling through a rad? Yeah, they really move too much air to be truly silent, even at 4V. But the amount of noise on my fans is miniscule, just a touch louder than an S-Flex D. I doubt I could hear them over a non-Corsair PSU tbh.
Awesome job Eric. I appreciate all your hard work and question answering along the way of your testing. I anxiously await your results though have already got my mind set on the San Ace as well as that Zalman ZM-F3 since you mentioned it too was a good fan.

I was so close on buying those Noctua fans because of the SSO-Bearing that was supposed to be quite (well I guess it is.... but we DO need some CFM as well).
I too am waiting for a final conclusion, but until then, what would be the best fan/s for a Radiator?
San Ace 1011 (for a 120x38mm) and/or Golfball (for a 120x25mm) ???
P.s.: Last 120x38mm fan I bought was HORRIBLE, but this thread has already said that Sunon fans are bad fans :)

I threw in one Silverstone just for kicks. great deal. I have a DD gts360 rad waiting for the Yate Loons. You definately took some of the guess work out of buying fans.
The custom and squirrel-cage Sunons may be okay (both are what Apple uses)...but every KD series (what we can buy in retail) just blows. Though, from LOTS of personal experience, iMac's aren't exactly silent under load.
And yeah, Petra's Yates are GREAT, especially for the price.
Best fan for a radiator? I'd go with the San Ace, but the Zalman and S-Flex fans are close competitors if you want lower 12V RPMs. All of them beat the Sharkoon in my tests (IIRC....just going from memory at this point). Heck, direct-from-YL Yate Loons are very competitive too.
you can buy Yate Loons directly from them ??? I always wanted the yate loon ball bearing low speed fans. Why would you want to throw in a silverstone fan for kicks ? i own a silverstone casing and even i dislike their fans. Sad to hear from Quoc Ngo that Petra can't get anymore of those Panaflo Ultra High Speed fans.

From what i tested using the yate loon medium and the s-flex f series fan on a top exhaust you would get the same amount of air out of the MESH. the s-flex f series maybe better without the mesh in the way tho. I don't know that answer.
I have one Zalman already that I love. I though I'd try the Silverstone just to see how it stacks up at lower speeds. I have a feeling I'll end up with the 3 YL on my rad and 2 Zalman feeding the case with frash air.
You can't get them directly from Yate Loon, but Petras does (only retailer I know that does, in fact). They're distinctly different fans....the D12BL-12 from jabtech wasn't so great either :(Quote:

FM121 problem? It's rated at 110CFM and doesn't come anywhere close (87CFM IIRC). Heck, expecting more than 95CFM out of a 2400RPM is expecting A LOT (almost too much, you have to sacrifice a lot in your design to do that....and it's rated at nearly 16% above THAT).

I learned later that my Yate Loon was one of the many fakes. Using that as a baseline, both the FN121 and the stock Scythe seem mediocre at best.
I'm also starting to think there's a MAJOR quality control issue at Silverstone with their fans. Some people have gotten GREAT FN121s that never make a peep (mine is among this...the noise profile was the best of all my round 1 fans), others hate them. This would also explain the various hate I have for their other fans.
Round 2 fans really lay a smack down to the Round 1 fans though....so it's all okay now.
Out of curiosity, what was wrong with your FN121s?
(btw, no graphs today like I thought I would....bigger and more xtreme stuff to do :p: )
i just did the back hand check for the FM121-B compared to the panaflo 1BX (2.5K rpm--105 cfm)...obviously not scientific but the back of the hand is way more sensitive to air flow than most other parts of the body...Quote:

the FN121 is quiet but i was expecting better output...NOW...this is where the SilenX beats the FN121...both are relatively quiet but the Silenx puts out better cfm since it is turning out a higher rpm...silenX gets to about 1600+ RPM and FN121 gets to about 1200 RPM....there is a definite difference in flow between the two fans....BUT, a-ha, the price difference here is like 240% between a SilenX and a FN121.
the only issue that i have with silverstons so far is one of two purchased 92mm silverstone fans had a bad controller...other than that, i like the housing design...very strong and looks extremely durable....the only negative that i can really point out about silverstone fans is the "ribbed" design...i do not like that!Quote:

:down: for the Silverstone FN121 model.

Ehh, I've empirically tested the FM121, it's nothing near its specs nor should it be. A 120x25mm 2400RPM fan will not come anywhere close to 100CFM, let alone the rated 110.03CFM.
Airflow pattern should be (and is) different from a Panaflo, but cooling potential is mostly proportional to CFM through a radiator considering our radiators (both WC and aircooling) are even pattern type.
I've empirically tested the SilenX higher speed fans as well (both 38mm thick and the 25mm thick)....the FN121 beats them in terms of CFM v. dBA (they're really not good, lol). But yeah, at stock speeds (1500RPM and 1200RPM, there's no competition for airflow [or noise, heh]).
What Silverstone does with their ratings is worse than what SilenX does. Not only do they lie by a massive proportion (more than ~5% begs to ask a few questions...26% is just flat out lying), but they spec the dBA at something plausible and add a decimal point or two of accuracy and therefore everyone believes the specs. This makes them worse than SilenX, IMO.
If I told you I was going to give you a free HR-03+...you might believe me. (afterall, at only $50, it's PLAUSIBLE)...but if I told you I was going to give you a free QX6850...you'd have to be a SilenX fanboy to believe me.
Silverstone will not get another dollar from me after knowing what I know about their fans....
i know that it is what is for me and you know what it is for you...we differ on opinion, at least, with your tested and my subjective evaluation of the FM121-B fan model.
you tell me what fan puts out actual 110 cfm or within your 5% guideline and i will buy it to do a back hand comparison with the silverstone FM121-B...stick with one that is 120 x 25mm so the hub diameter is not in play with my evaluation.
on another note; why don't you write (email) silverstone headquarters with your results so they know of their blatant, misleading specifications since you did the technical testing on these fans....use your position as a long time Xtreme poster to show them that you are telling folks, like me, to avoid buying their fans....you have clout or standing here in Xtreme!.
i would bet that you get a rise out of them!...they will either write back to defend their specifications or avoid discussing the subject if they don't want to bring light upon their short fallings in their fan product line.
come on, take them on since you have strong convictions about your testing methods and results!

i have tested the FM122 vs the Panaflo H1BX and the Panaflo H1BX wins in my view. If the graphs in the first page are still true then i take it then my testing was right. I tried the backhand method and the Panaflo H1BX slide away from my hand...
Noise levels is too subjective without a meter so thats not what i'm going to say.
I'll consider writing Silverstone....
As for fans that push 110CFM +-5%:
San Ace 1011 (yes, it's rated at 103, all four of mine pulled between 112.1 and 114.5)
Panaflo U1A (rated for 114.7, one pulled 113.0 and the other 112.7)
anything that Delta rates at 110CFM +-5% (even their 220CFM beast got to within like 1CFM of rating....our data corroborates on every fan so far--I trust their CFM and dBA numbers completely)
anything else that NMB-MAT rates at 110CFM +-5% (the Scythe Minebea series was tested to within .5CFM on all models in my testing....and the Panaflo NMB-MAT fans are also within 3CFM on all 10 I've tested)

Yeah, the San Ace is similar to the Panaflo...different bearings and a MUCH weaker blade structure (really, they break way too easily). The design also has higher CFM/RPM efficiency (but takes a hit on radiator CFM because of this).
This leads me to my next point: the high-speed 120x120x25mm market is ripe for the taking. Why lie about it when you can just do it?
scythe japan just released their own 38mm thick "ultra" fans...
High speed 120x120x25mm fans would go to delta if i'm not wrong.
silverstone first used cooljag everflow now the newer series goes to some galemotor company... relabelling at its worse.
True. My FN122 is a Gale... I have tested the San Ace 1011 and the FM 121 side by side on my PA160 test rig and the San Ace far and away is a quieter and better performing fan at any speed. I probably have a half dozen FM 121 fans mounted to various heatsinks and at the time they were the most highly recommended fan for that use. However at anything over about 1300 rpm they make my ears ring after a short listen.
The San Ace I am using now have a lower pitched sound and when run around 7V are more than adequate and much less annoying than just about any fan I have used.
I have a fairly large collection of SilenX and frankly I think all the SilenX hate is a bit overdone. They are lightly constructed fans that look nice and produce reasonable airflow for most applications. They are expensive. The only downside I have to these fans is the oil in the bearing is contained merely by a self adhesive sticker--if the sticker fails the oil leaks out and makes a mess...this has only happened on two of the several dozen I have tested/ used in builds.
I think anyone concerned with how much a fan costs should be buying Yate Loons...if price is no option then San Ace 1011 are a fine choice.
Unfortunately the distributor for the San Ace linked by Vapor turned out to be very odd and refused me service after I questioned his shipping rates. So much for customer service. However you can still find these fans at subzeropc.com and a few other vendors. Expensive but I cannot se anyone complaining about their build or performance.

Well, getting better gas mileage costs (potentially) millions of dollars in R&D....making a fan spin faster is easy. I understand your point though....

I have a fairly large collection of SilenX and frankly I think all the SilenX hate is a bit overdone. They are lightly constructed fans that look nice and produce reasonable airflow for most applications. They are expensive. The only downside I have to these fans is the oil in the bearing is contained merely by a self adhesive sticker--if the sticker fails the oil leaks out and makes a mess...this has only happened on two of the several dozen I have tested/ used in builds.
i think the expensive feature and the possibility of the oil leaking is a big reason why not to buy them!

My experience with the SilenX is that they do perform very well in ideal conditions. Static presure and flow direction effect performance greatly. Alone they work well, give them any sort of obstruction or restriction and your better off with no fan at all. JMO
The 38mm versions might be different.

The delta fan on the Enzotech Ultra-X is really annoying at full speed. I'm going to change it to another Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000. I liked the last one so much that I'm getting another.
Vapor, should I wait for your results or would I be ok ordering another Sharkoon? I really liked the one I just used on an SI-128.
Do you have something better in store or is this still king in the medium speed/quiet fan category?
Fans that I've found to beat the Sharkoon:
Scythe S-Flex F
Zalman ZM-F3
One or two fans come close or tie, but those three are the best subjectively in the 1600-2000 stock RPM range.
I have to give credit where credit is due.
Those Scythe S-Flex F series are just about the quietest air-movers I've ever used.
Like an idiot I sold the 2 that I had because.......well, it's a long story.
Let's just say, "because I'm I'm an idiot".
That's interesting because the Zalman fans that I tested really blasted at full speed, and made more noise than the Sharkoon. I found them to be way too loud at normal speed. I should say that this is for cooling a heatsink and won't be used as a case fan.
The Zalmans were great though with the included resistor to slow them down, real quiet.

I have 2 Zalman now and I will say that they are loud when running full power. However, they push a ton of air full blast and is you slow them down be it through the resistor that comes with them or a controller, they are silent and still push a ton of air.
Yeah they really blast some air, but are too loud for me at full speed.
The Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000 on the other hand, is much quieter at its full speed of 2000rpm than the Zalman. Both run very close RPM wise.

Quieter than the Sharkoon 2000, but doesn't cool as well either.
I used both on a TTBT, Scythe Infinity, TRUE, and IFX-14 for a comparison of cooling abilities. :)

Rumor had it there was an S-Flex G coming out at 1900RPM....that would go toe-to-toe with the Sharkoon 2000, IMO

I would like to use two of the above fans for front intake and one in the back for exhaust on a Lian Li PC-A70B. If I use a 3pin to 4pin directly to the PSU what speed would the fans default too? Or do I need a fan controller.

Those fans look exactly like my evercool aluminum fans that are sub par at best. They push a ton of air (2000rpm) but are quite loud. Easily 36dba+.
They are so quiet that it's almost negligible. If you need the added cooling it's good to be able to turn it all the way up (and back down for silent cooling). I would just get the F as not to limit yourself.Quote:

Just an update on the Yate Loon-sl fans. I got 3 and have them on a gts 360 rad. They push air well enough but it seems that they suffer quite a bit from the increased fin density. I have a Thermochill rad on the way so we'll see what kind of differnce there is.
Also, as a nonscientific comparison to the Antec Tri-cool that come with the Antec cases. The YL-sl push much more air at low speeds and at full speed are barely as loud as the Antec are on low. Great buy the YL are.
One more thing. Not that I'm not completely happy with Vapors analysis, but I bet a lot of people would like the same thing done for the small fan market (40mm?)

I can say, I own 3 San Ace 1011 fans. They are amazing. I broke one, stupid me. So I just ordered 2 more. I can basically cool a Q6600 @ 3.8ghz @ 100% core usage w/ 2 of these fans on a triple rad. I will be using another and see if I can get my temps down. The other will be used to create pseudo-hurricanes for hurricane season. You never know when another one will pop up, cough Katrina cough.
Seriously, these fans are amazing. Undervolted, I can barely hear them from 3 feet away and they still move serious air through a rad.
I have 3 coming in as well, should be here any day now. Can't wait to replace my Panaflos with these to keep my Q6600 cool.

I agree, just finished ordering two more Sanyo Denki San Ace 109R1212H1011 Fans from Thermal FX there good fans but expensive.
Mojaveron, I almost want to get a mountain mods case w/ 9 120mm fan holes just to fill it with these and see what kind of temps I could get on air.
I really can't thank Vapor enough. Before his reviews, I knew nothing about fans in general. I thought there were good and bad fans. I didn't think that there was such a large range of fan quality. At least I'm now an informed consumer, THE WORST KIND!
Do you guys think that using 6 of these in a push pull config on a rad will add a noticeable (at least 3 or 4*C) decrease in temp over just 3 fans pulling?

I had 2 noctua,silence are good (front fan,back fan) but in my infinity i had a silenx pro leds 1200rpm 72cfm that was suposed to do 17dba.I'v seen this fans had problems because had to much cfm.

Im about to buy some Yate Loons from PTS, but I cant decide between the high speed and the medium speed.
Currently Im using the stock fans from my TT Tsunami, which flat out suck. A buddy is selling me his Sunbeam rheobus and a Yate medium for $15. I was thinking about putting the Yate medium as intake, buy 2 high speeds, one for exhaust and one for my CPU heatsink. I have a 92mm on the side as intake as well, which is why I would only put the medium in the front intake.
How well do Yate high speeds undervolt with a rheobus? Do they still move a decent amount of air? Noise isnt too much of a concern when gaming, I usually wear a headset unless my roommate and I are playing alongside each other.
The high speeds and medium speeds are the same price on PTS, so either is an option.
the Yate sl I have do really well at 5-7v. very quiet and still moving decent air. Not sure about the medium and high speed ones

I have a question that might fit in this thread...I suppose.
When wiring 3 fans together with solder to hook up to 1 fan controller. Should there be, or will there be any loss in performance for any of the fans? To me the answer seems obvious, which is no. Am I right to assume that?
Because I hooked 3 fans together and 1 fan is a bit stronger than the other 2. My thought is that the other 2 are just not as good....should have binned them eh.
