My advice is to get the RAM that requires the smallest amount of VDIMM to POST at the SPD frequencies/timings. My RAM wouldn't POST for the first boot with this board (or the P5K Deluxe....) so I had to buy some cheap DDR2-667 that requires the DDR2 standard 1.8V.
I have to replace my Ballistix with this every time I clear the CMOS. I am going to have to reprogram the SPD data using the SPD tool......because it's really annoying.
Another thing to consider is that the dividers aren't stable yet, so it would be unwise to spend extra money on DDR2-1066 and up memory....
My advice? Get these:

I'm running 0907 right now, and my RAM is stable at DDR2-1066 5-5-5-15, but this isn't stable with an FSB over 400. Let's hope they get a BIOS that allows stable dividers at a high FSB.....

so it seems more like a divider FSB: RAM prob huh with these boards, and 1:1 shoudnt be much trouble right? well I main goal is look for a nice max sweet 24/7 overclock then I am gonna bother with them RAM settings I ques.

Well, i flashed the bios as i normally do. Download the bios file, put it on an USB stick, entering Bios, going into Tools, starting Asus EZ Flash, flashing, reboot, loading Bios Defaults... and then reboot again to see if everything is ok. And then.... my CPU temp goes arround 8-10 degrees Celsius. What else can i do ? Shall i go back to an earlier bios or try to flash it again ? Thx.

Well I'm going to for max OC on 9x multi at first, but I would like to be able to run 475*8 or more so my memory can have the highest frequency as possible.... I may have to just tighten the timings though.

ait , well I like XP more then vista, but I plan on using the G.Skill 2x2GB, but XP wont reckon full 4GB, but would Prime Blend stress the ram enough, for doing some 24/7 tests? Or can I better use Vista 64 bits for that and onces attained a stable clock swap back to XP. I want to use Xp64 bit I dont have that OS, only XP/ Vista 64 ( genuine)

Hello all.Although I m new i have read almost all the posts in here.But i still have a prob.I dont have a mind blowing O/C on my Q6600 but im trying to learn through reading and testing.
My question to you is the following.I have managed to run @ 8x425 with 1.4v in bios (903) 1.38 in Win Cpu-z.This is Prime95 1+hour stable.Going to 8x426 at the same Volt and i get an error within 10 mins.So i guess this is the absolute Max for this Voltage.The problem is that i cant run Prime95 Blend test stable at all.i get an error within 5-7 min.I run my Crucial at 1020@5-5-5-15 through priming.I also have:

FSB Strap @ 333
Cpu PLL @ 1.54
NB Volt @ 1.49
DRAM Volt @ 2.06
FSB Term Volt @ 1.3
SB Volt @ 1.05
Loadline @ Enabled

You need more FSB Term. voltage. I'm suprised you're stable that high with so little.

I thought that NB Volt was the only responsible for the ram stability.I am gonna try what u said.Shall I increase by 1 step or i ll need more than that?Any voltage from what i posted above that can be lowered?To reduce heat that is.

Yes try more FSBT votage, Then try raising NB volts a bit. I'd run the small FFT's in prime to test stability of your CPU before moving onto blend, which stresses your RAM more.

If u check what i said in my first post is that with the current Volt i run i am 100% 1+hour of Prime95 small FFT stable.My only prob is the blend test.So yes i have a mem prob atm.

But I would also like to know what Core Voltage is considered 100% bullet proof for 24/7 use.And i mean for air-cooling.

I will make a pic of the burned part of the motherboard next days. It`s a very little black chip between sata ports and buttom of the board/Q-Connector. I didn`t see any other damages on the board or other components. Ram works fine after, made a quick test on a friend`s board.
No AS5 has touched the board. Put AS5 on cpu away from the board with cpu in my hand in this black plastic protection bottom. And for NB I put AS5 on the HR-05 IFX Sli and only in the middle of the cooler and the cooler doesn`t fill out the NB. On SB, I didn`t make any AS5 on the Enzotech cooler, only used the squared protection ring around the SB chip. SB has no heatspreader and I thought that would be best.
Don`t know excatly any more but there isn`t any pad between Asus pipe and SB, isn`t it!?

Now I am very afraid of making same with my non-se I ordered today. I don`t even know, if that has something to do with my alternativ mb-coolers and mounting or if I only had bad luck....

Along as your temps are ok you can raise your Vcore. I use 1.47v for 24/7 and my Prime temps are low 60's. I have the same RAM as you and I use 2.12v in BIOS which for me is closer to 2.22 actual.

I said when I was working on it "WTF, how is that possible" then i checked Via Core-Temp, Everest, and other programs and got the same readings.

My prime temps with current air cooling are like 69/69/66/66...so i guess i ll stick at my current 1.38v although no game/app will raise temps so high.One attempt i made with 1.4v was around 71C. (1.4v=3.49Ghz for me)

I also see in your sig that u run your mem @ 1:1 ratio.Does this give better performance?

1:1 would give you better stability, dividers on this board are sketchy

First thing off the bat that can be said is hat ACPI support is lacking something in this new beta BIOS. Not even in a 1:1 or low OC profile will it at the very least enter S3 "Sleep".

As for the volt thing, interestingly enough at my mild 500x7 the E6750 loads and runs fine in AUTO vcore but mobo still locks into TM1 mode so no support for reduced vcore w/ mult in C+P State Combined. I overclock for daily use so this lack of support is immediately prooving to be a problem.

Anybody else use this mobo in full or partial ACPI modes?

It turns out that this mobo does suport BIOS Flash 3 Recovery from ASUS DVD/CD or USB but I cant get the Flash Recovery menu to come up without a failed flash attemp. So booting to ASUS DVD and trying to flash to ROM file on DVD is no good, it is still date constraining. So if we can figure out how to safely change the ROM file date, then we can flash in EZ-Flash just the same.

Just do as I did. Start flash of 0907 bios, and during the "Writing Bios" power down. Then power up with the CD and you´re set to go.

Could anyone point me to some settings for 3.2 or 3.4?

Hmm.....that's strange.....what version of Everest? I run Ultimate Edition 4.20.1170 in Vista x64 and it reports my temps correctly.....


Update on my FSB testing:
I'm stable at 475 for the CPU only with 1.488V according to CPU-Z, but I think I can use less VCore....
My memory isn't stable at DDR2-950 4-4-4-12 and I refuse to overvolt the RAM.....so hopefully we can get this divider issue sorted out before long so I can go with a higher FSB.

O.K. back on BIOS v0802. Just to note, ASUS Live Update v06.10.02 is an X64 version and did work in XP X64 as long as Downgradable BIOS was checked in options first. I did change name of file to of "MAXIMUS_F~" to OLD_BIOS.ROM as have done in the past. Not sure if it is was a must, Ijust knew it was so in the past.

USB Moue Update: The only thing I noticed with this version as I did before and forgot to identify this. But in BIOS v0802, after resume from S3 "Sleep", and wired 5 button USB mouse, pointer may drop out after a few moments requiring to unplug and relpug USB for mouse to get it to load up again. Has anybody had this experience in 802. I only mention it as I did not get this in v0901. However, the randomness of fail to resume from S3 and failed S4 resume is already looking better, even on the same devider as I used in profile 2 in sig.

RE: BIOS v0907, I forgot to confirm if option for Pnp OS was Enabled in my recent 0907 test to know if it had any effect on ACPI support before I tested any further. So maybe current v0907 testers can confirm this for me and upcoming users. Test for ACPI support in S3 or S4 and weather or not Pnp OS is Enabled.

Is it just me or Maximus overvolts NB & SB like hell ? I mean, i just realised why my NB & SB are running so hot (61 and 54 degrees Celsius). Even i setup my NB & SB on Auto, i see in Everest i get 1.63V on NB)... Setting it manually to lowest setting resulted in some BSOD's... Can somebody tell me what's the default voltage for NB/SB/PLL ? Or maybe there is some page with the default settings written (as i don't trust my bios anymore... i mean, who could, when the CPU temperature would be shown as 20-25 degrees lower than room temperature.... crazy Asus).

It throws a fit if aacenter's running. I actually can't seem to get any of the Asus utilities installed and functioning properly. Originally, I installed the suite wo/ UAC turned off and it hung when installing. Later, I'd disabled UAC and it ran, installed the ACPI (?) or whatever it's called, but loaded up a blank page. I've removed and added it a couple times w/ no success.

Hmmm......how do those OC? I may just buy those......only $100 afer MIR for 4Gb......only require 1.8V.....nice. The timings aren't very good though...I bet if I reprogram my current SPD to run 5-5-5-15 at DDR2-800 they can boot at 1.8V. I'll just mess around with it until I get a good setting most likely.

Has anyone had a problem with CPU level UP not showing up?

I have the top main menu for Ai Overclock tuner (auto, manual, cpu level up) and CPU Ratio Control. But I'm missing the CPU Level Up. I'm not sure it was ever there.... When I upgraded my bios to the newest 907 it still wasn't there. I cleared the CMOS to defaults before upgrading but still no luck.

Weird. Not too big a deal since I'll use manual mode anyway.

AS5 is non-conductive, but slightly capacitive.

You told me in previous posta that my problem regarding prime 95 blend test should be due to low (1.3v) FSBT Voltage.So i poped in Bios and changed it to 1.4v.The problem is that now after about 3-4 min instead of an error i got a reboot.What exactly is going on now???

Just checked Bios again...NB Volt @ 1.49 , FSBT Volt @ 1.4v.Next step on them is going on yellow and wouldnt like to go there i dont think i have the cooling for more voltage.
Do u think increasing CPU PLL Volt (currently @ 1.56v) wil help stability with blend test?

If I ever receive my NB block, and am able to put my PC back togeather, count on a follow up report.

can some1 explain me short what this strap is all about? Is lower or higher better? ( 266 -400)? this seems to cause some O/c problems right?

Well, i found out the problem related to incorect CPU temperature (below 10 degrees Celsius). I downgraded the bios from 0907 to 0903 and it's all reported ok now. So, if this happens to you too, you know what to do :)

Also, related to my temps on NB/SB, i found out on Auto the Maximus is overvolting too much the NB (and with the heatpipe linked to SB, it's also heating up SB). Setting the voltages manually on NB/SB, i get nicer temps (from 61 to 51 Celsius on NB and from 54 to 46 on SB). Hopefully i setup the right voltages for them :D

Could sb. perhaps tell what was wrong with my Board when I show the pic with the burned part? But I`m only able to, when new Board will arrive and I can use my own system again. No cardreader here or somewhere at this old pc.

I'm testing a new theory.

Either these board doesn't like anything above a 97% payload on the CPU when internal FSB is above 423.

These board takes a longtime to get stable. I've noticed these. Because when I run 420x9, every few days, i can bump down the voltage and it still be stable, where before when i first set 420x9 i would need about 1.4825 volts. where now I can run 1.4500 volts.

Anyways, got a Dtek Fuzion en route to replace this Stinger PGA Rev1. The Stinger block is good, but I want to see if the Dtek is better. The it will be time to upgrade these 2 Bonnie cores to a BIP 480 or the like.

Straps are where memory speed/FSB ratios change. Sometimes directly after a strap changes, performance can be reduced. So some straps will work better at different FSB's. If you have been raising your FSB but find that performance is worse than a slighlty lower FSB for the same multiple (eg the Asus P5B 400 Mhz FSB strap issue - google for plenty of examples) , then try changing the strap. So there isn't one thats really any better than another.0

Btw, how do you guys save your bios settings ? Written by hand and filled in that table, or is there a software or a bios tool that can extract your settings ?

Also, i was wondering why all AiSuite doesn't want to start on my Windows XP no matter what i do. I've tried even the last version (V1.03.15) and still get some errors when trying to start... Is there some option needed to be enabled in bios ?

hardly a big deal since the actual core times are stll in same area. The CPU IHS temp is not as important as the core tmps but yes, I did notice this too but hardly as frustrating and problematic as the lack of S3 funstion for ACPI supprot.

I flashed back to v0802 but now I hae issues with ACPI since the mishap in v0907 and not been the same since yesterday morning. Now it enters S3 but has issues when resuming. So far S4 enter and resume are OK.

couldn't care less if cpu temps were 500c, i only rely on core temps.

0907 is an ok bios for me just needed to work it out coming from 0901/0903 ....clock twister was not as tolerant for me in 0907 but now it's all good.

I monitor temps with Everest and Coretemp
No temp issues here using 907

Did set voltages on manual for a while:
CPU to 1.2
SB to 1.1
NB to 1.3
Dram to 1.8

Dram v showed 1.87 both in bios and probe
CPU temp 28c in bios and something like 18C ???????? in probe

Leads me to beleve that v. affects probe temp readings.

Also I notice when settings are in auto in bios, and I go to the OS and iniciate probe, for a split second the temp reading on the CPU read 32c same as bios, then inmediately change to 24c. Again I think probe is afected by voltage fluxes.

Just got back from vaca and tried 0907. Kept same settings from 0903, and did my standard 1st test of 5 min full CPUload under OCCT. Everest was monitoring all the temps. CPUtemp was way low. The 4 Core temps read same as in 0903. 0903 & 0907 are on ASUSs's website (&FTP) so I guess they passed QC?

IMHO Asus fixed the CPU temp issue in BIOS 907 as the temps now are much much much more believable on my Q6600 at 3.825GHz at 1.38V.

Secondly, I'm somewhat puzzled by why some of you have having high NB/SB temps. On mine it's 44C for the NB at most (priming) and say 33C for the SB. How on earth you guys get to 61C is puzzling. The only fact remaining would be to say the NB HS must not be making good contact with the NB IHS.

I had a similar incident on my Abit IP35 PRO, did the bolt mod and my temps dropped by around 10C (PWM).

I don't see anything out of whack with my temps on 0903 except the core temps may be reading *a little* high. From everything I've seen, the 0907 temps are good except the core temps are way low.

Core temps on mine with BIOS 907 are about 63/63/68/68 @ 3.825GHz @ 1.38V with a TRUE 120 Ex 2000rpm Scythe fan under Prime95 25.5 Small FFT.

They don't seem low to me, about right in fact, or above average even.

The newer BIOS's are supposed to enable the PECI (or what's it called) interface to read temps accurately, but on mine it doesn't seem to cause problems.

At 3.6GHz I get temps around 50/50/55/55 but that's at 1.27V.

Coretemps are the same like with Bios 0903 aren`t they!? Only cpu(overall) temp is much too low with 0907!

Or are there any guys, who have other core temps than with bios 0903? I have only seen too low cpu overall temp.

Mine are reading ~50 at load and I'm only running 1.35v on water so that seems a little high to me.

Do you know your core temps with 0903? How high have you clocked your cpu? The temperature not only gets higher because of higher voltage, it also gets higher with a higher cpu clock.

I'm at 7 x 450 so it's a pretty good clock over 7 x 333. Still seems a little high to me but maybe I need to reseat my block.

I'm getting my board today. Should i change the thermal paste before anything?

I bought the Maximus Formula SE and fired it up with a C2D 6850.
So here are my problems I've:

- I can only leave the Vcore setting on auto (or set it manually to a value 1,325 or less). All values above will lead to no boot. The auto value sets it to 1,325 (BIOS and CPUZ show this value)

- My NB temp is even idle at around 57 C and at full load even around 65C+.

I use default coolings (no watercooling installed) on NB. I've no problem with CPU temp. I use the Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme with a Scythe S-FLEX 1200, 120x120x25mm cooler. I also use 2 casecoolers (both 120 mm) and only top quality components (Enermax Infinity 650 Power supply, Corsair RAM, ...).


Concerned with my NB temp I searched Intel page for X38 specs. The official Intel NB max temp is over 90 C, so my temp is fine and I've no probs with stability (ran all kinds of tests over 48 hours with CPU overclocked 435x8 setting)
So I wonder how u guys get NB temps about 45 C loaded and all talk about unstability with temps over 50 C. T&#37;his isn't true, as my example and official Intel document proves.

Even without OCing my NB temp is in Idle far above 50C, and this in a well cooled room and 100% stable running....
someone confirms this NB temps and also have this strange behavier with only auto set vcore working?

I had high NB temps untill I reseated the fuzion block with AS5, its really worth the time.
On full load (and my room is rather warm 25 celcius) my NB hits 45 celcius max.
There were claims made that above 47 you COULD experience instability at high FSB

Bandwidth isn't everything...tighter timings are sometimes better. However, THIS MAY HELP!

That's exactly what I was trying to say... CPUtemp is way low, when you compare to the other 4 cores, which obviously makes no sense.

Received my 2nd Maximus SE (first one had dead mem slots) and after a week of testing and oc'ing it, all i can say that it really deserves the asus name.

Haven't had a single prob for a week now and it's behavior while oc'ing is top notch. Highly recommended... :up:


Right now running on 802 bios, for specs see sig.

Chip isnt that strong max fsb around 450 with 8.5 multi. Mem is overclocking fine with 4x1024, vdimm 2.28v real because of the Cellshocks. Just starting with the cards but like them a lot. Game OS for now:

You have almost the same problem i did. It seems Auto is overvolting CPU/NB/etc.. specially when using an E6850. After setting them manually and setting up an 120mm fan to blow over NB and memory, i managed to get down arround 10 degrees Celsius, stable in Prime/Orthos. I'll post my settings later (not at home right now), maybe they help you with your E6850. Btw, i use now 0903 bios as the last one 0907 listed some very strange temperature readings on my E6850 (like 7-10 degrees Celsius even in Full Load). Take care !

Jeezuz, what a thread,.. matyrs, heros, masochists...lol, this thing at stock with bios 401 was bad, unstable graphics, hardware all wrong settings. These pages give me signs of a Holy Grail.

NOW THIS... yes, a kranky, delicate beast, obviously needs whipping into shape. I read most of this and done some whipping, now i believe in the common quest: Cranked Control.

Flashed from usb to bios 907, tried to set things manualy and had a failed OC.

So, set CPU Level Up to 6850, then RAM timings 5.5.5.15 2T, booted into a red DRAM 2.29v ....Ai OC Tuner to Manual, bios reset DRAM to 2.18 and got 2.06... wouldn't mind to get this ram speed optimal sometime. tried to set RAM in bios to 1066 and came back with like 800?

If i could get it up to 3.4GHz and get it sitting stable like it is at the moment... that will be just groovee. Also noticed with Everest and CPU-Z that the CPU backs down to 2003MHz 6x when idling.? Test it in Crysis and COD4 later today... yaay.

But hey... it seems orite pumping at:

So what kind of voltage are you guys running on your Q6600 G0s? I have this running for 3.8...........can't get 475x8 completely stable yet. OCCT craps out at 8 minutes or so. I really want 475 stable so my memory can run faster.....DDR2-846 4-4-4-12 isn't fast :p

I startet with the non beta version 8 BIOS (think 8.0.4 without looking), then I changed to 9.0.3 and now I run 9.0.7. I can confirm strange temp values, should be fixed with next official release.
I also had problems wirh all BIOS versions with multiple initial boots till boot went through to windows or even no boot staying at a black screen (fans running). The LCD showed there always detecting RAM, so I tryed to manually raise dram voltage. This helped (also tryed before to change RAM slots, but no change) and since this I have no problems with booting.

As you say it seems like auto settings overvoltage alot on this MB. The problem is to find the right default values, cause official Intel X38 Chipsetdocument specifies a big voltage range for NB and I really don't want to run 1000 prime tests to find the ideal value for all voltage settings...

All that said I have expected a bit more overclocking success with this MB thinking of it's price. But seems like my CPU can't get higher than 3500 MHz prime around the clock stable. I tried this with all possible values for FSB high/multi low and other way around and many voltage settings. RAM was never the limiting factor. Also disappointing that no vcore above 1,325 works, even if intel specifies it to 1,5v max...

Robin77: these are my settings (PCIE/MEM Spread Spectrum Disabled, and all CPU options Disabled). Sorry for the pics, but i was lazy to note them down (some guy said there is a tool to save the settings in bios, but i can't read the file it's creating. maybe some other tool is needed to open it).
They are for CPU running at 3.6Ghz and memory at 1200Mhz (but you can easely setup the memory at 1066Mhz or 800Mhz if you need them lower). Good luck !
