If you're only benching, I guess it's ok ... but if you're looking for 24/7 stable 3.8Ghz ... lower your values ... you shouldn't need these high volts.

True ... NO GO with "Performance Mode" ... and I've tried that so many times already, I'm almost wondering everytime I try it if it's ruining the chip further. Did it work with you? I can't get into Vista no matter what setting I give the CME .... only way I boot into Vista is WITHOUT the CME.

That is what i just mean every chip is different, Atleast chip doesnt run whit same settings, and needs some little tweaking.

Wouldnt say that 1.4 is the overkill, but when it goes near 1.45V, That is what i use for superpi results :D

1.4 Whit LLC (1.38 LOAD) + Proper cooling should be okey! This is just my mind :rolleyes:

you've got the chip of my dreams. mine won't post at anything below 1.4 and won't run stable below 1.45. i added .0125 for ensured stability. good news is, runs 55C load on water.

Good Powerchips run well at very low voltage.

You're giving yours 1.88v roughly, which is more than enough for good speeds on good PSC RAM.

Nothing really shocking there...it's why i like PSC ICs so much vs. Micron...you don't need to fry your RAM with voltage for good results.

Wow :shocked: thats unlucky. No idea why it thats high! Anybody care to speculate? Or is it just an unruly chip?

55c on load is awesome though. Especially with a vcore like that. Supose water does have it's benefits :D Mine breaks 62c with IBT and 55c with P95. I shall look into water :up:

I guess there's a lot of variation in overclockability (we all know that, but we hope we are one of the lucky ones, but somebody has to lose CPU roulette)...I've got a dud Q9550...though not that bad. Then there's the guy in I was talking to above who does the same stable clocks as me (3.4 Ghz@1.32v) at 1.14v...geez!

Is it normal that every time I cut the power (i.e. unplug the PSU), the P5Q Deluxe loses bios settings and I need either F2 to load defaults or F1 to go into BIOS setup? Battery seems to be fine since date/time and OC profiles do survive power failure. It's kinda annoying to restore BIOS settings everytime mobo loses external power.

Sounds like bad flash or bad BIOS chip switch to your backup chip and see if it stops.

I did flash it through BIOS option after a few failed attempts to flash from DOS, however, as I recall, I think I had the same issue before the flash with the 704 bios it shipped with. I didn't know this mobo had a backup BIOS chip, how do you make the switch?

Well when you look inside your case, you see your mb and those chips are in right downcorner on ur board 2x little black box wich you can change by using ur fingers :D

I'm with these settings to 100000% stable system (3ghz Multi8). The problem is that i want more... 3.2ghz with multi 8x, but it always fail the Prime95 In Place Large FFTs test.

Any solution? I already tried to rise up the cpu vcore, FSB Termination Voltage and NB Voltage but without success.:(

But surely this defeats the puropse of buying a SATA drive.
If I want to use a Floppy do I need the SATA controllers from the ASUS site and double click the EXE file to extract the SATA controller drivers?
Please anyone out there help me! I never get a proper answer to this question :) Someone must have SATA in their systems and built systems.
All my parts will be here by Thursday and I just need a guy out there to tell me what I need to do, or my best options are. I know this SATA thing is going to trip me up some how :( .

I have seen a person say that the new 1406 took away his issue with the CME option. Luci5r you should give it a go and see if hes right man. Guy with the sata questions. If you are not running Raid you do not need the drivers at the f6 screen.. Set in BIOS ide mode for the controller and you will be fine.

Cool, I am on it right now with my Q6600 and everything seems ok , I still noticed my pullins "half of them" disapearing so this is not final.. I think my chipset is getting hot because I can't push the voltage on this thing very good on it. I can do up to like 1.36 then after that eveyrthing becomes unstable. I can't get this Q6600 past 3.6Ghz and it can do 4.13Ghz on my P35 board. I just tried a bunch of different settings and was not able to get into windows above 3.6Ghz but, it was booting fine @ 4.0GHZ into the BIOS.

That's interesting - I guess the real test comes in with a Q9450. What's the word on your chip? Is it still with ASUS?

Yeah it is still there. I told him to keep it as long as he needs it and the last I heard from his like I said was him saying he was going to flash to this 1406 and he hasn't gotten back yet. I emailed him earilier and asked how everything went and nothing but, I think he is realizing my issue isn't going away speaking from expierience at a helpdesk here mind you. He can keep it until the issue is resolved because I have this quad and I am buying a dualie because I just sold my system # 2 in my sig for $700 and will buy the dualie after he gives me $200 of it.

Concerning bios 1406, They did something that adjusted vdore under load according the OCCT. I ran a few runs with OCCT before I updated from 1402 to 1406 today. With 1402, after the initial 1 minute delay, my vcore was more a less a flat line. With 1406 it goes up with Load, ie when the cpu is tested, and down a tad when ram is being tested. Interesting.

My findings won't help you guys with the problem, as I do not have a C1, nor am I running Vista, but it is interesting nonetheless.

1406 WORKS!!

True ... It works!! I flashed to 1406 about half an hour ago - didn't give me any problems booting into Vista - and it's been about half an hour without any BSOD's, Crashes or Freezes of any kind. As far as I can see, the system is running stable & solid.

NOTE: I'm running Stock Defaults right now. I haven't overclocked. I wanted to see if I can Boot into Vista or not. But before, any BIOS > 0803 ... even on Stock Defaults I could NOT boot into Vista - so this is a Tremendous Sign! This is the First BIOS > 0803 which has boot into Vista and running stable.

I'll run a few operations and then shut it down, and Overclock back to my 3.8Ghz OC and see it if still holds.

This is good news ... this could be it!!!

Good to see its maybe going to pan out for you :) I find this bios so far to me a bit more stable than the 1402 I was running on. I'm able to drop the Vcore/FSB Termination And the NB voltage 1 notch down so far with this bios. Seems a bit snappier too but Everest gives me the same score as before. All in all, I like 1406!

At this point I would like to Request each every single P5Q Deluxe owner to immediately flash to the latest 1406 BIOS. Please remember that most of us Q9450 owners *Did Not* have problems with the BIOS > 0803 Immediately after flashing - the problems started over a period of time. Regardless of the Quad-Core CPU you are using - if you don't have any issues with any Prior BIOS does not mean you won't start having issues.

I have been running my system stable for over 16 hours now on 1406, and some other users (eg:- Lar) are also reporting better stability using 1406.

Please also note - There was Obviously something wrong with all the BIOS > 0803 since ASUS seems to have fixed it in 1406. If there was nothing wrong with them - there would be nothing to fix - and I would still not be able to Boot into Vista with 1406.

So again, I urge folks to flash to 1406.

I'll have to give it a go when I get home from work today. I've been stable on 1402 for a while now, but would love to dial my VCore down a notch or 2 and keep the stability. Either way, since it is the last official BIOS release and as long as it keeps my current OC, I'll definitely flashing it tonight.

Well it seems our joint efforts seem to be paying off. I know it's early yet, and Leeg pointed out, these are undoubtedly 'early results' .. but they are promising, and let's hope they hold out.

Let me know if you hear back from your contact - and once you get that chip back, I wouldn't trade it for the world. My Q9450 is still shining brilliance!

Really nice to hear that asus has finally started to fix their bioses :up:

I've been using 1406 for the last day or so, and it's as rock solid as 803. Previously my machine was very unstable with any of the 1xxx BIOSes and couldn't get through more than a few seconds/minutes of Prime95 Merge or IntelBurnTest. Apps were always crashing, and real memory abusers like MySQL were constantly failing.

Now it all just works the way it's supposed to with 1406, so I'd recommend anyone seeing these kinds of memory and stability problems should try the 1406.

Whats the auto voltages like with Bios 1406? still a mess like the previous bios's? i.e. dangerously high?

The BIOS EZFLASH Thingy. alt+f2 in beggining or it is in the BIOS options as well.

Take the great advice other folks are giving you here - Stay Away from the ASUS Update application inside Windows. Use the EZFlash in the BIOS, or during boot up, press ALT+F2.

Hope this solve my pc's crashes :(

I had it all at stock values in bios and vista still crashed :(

I personally use afudos to flash, from a bootable USB flash drive.

Running 1406 here so far so good.

I just talked him and he is sending it back tomorrow for me. Apparently he has been stressing it for 48hrs and he hasn't had an issue yet so.. I asked him politely what the issue was and I am waiting for a response now.

1406 gets me closer to 500fsb, but still not stable. i'll leave it for now.

"Problem" is not a certainity using ASUS Update application ... it's a possibility. Using EZFlash is safer in the sense that you are 'not' relying on the Windows operating systems, DLL's, resources, the whole shiznit! You're basically using raw BIOS without anything to do with the Operating System or Software.

It's a better, preferred choice. But you don't need to go back & re-flash in case you used ASUS Update.

I just asked because i think we got to a point that we shouldnt spread rumors about methods of updating the bios that arent true.
I mean if 50%(random number) from the people in this thread would have problems with the Asus update utility then fine, but just saying dont use it because in the past there maybe were problems is not ok.
I also used the Windows utility from my socketA Epox board and that was also each time ok.

I understand what you're saying, but flashing BIOS, one of the most critical & sensitive updates you can do to your system, using BIOS tools rather then Windows Applications is not so much so a 'rumor' issue, it's more of a 'general consensus' thing.

I don't have statistics in front of me to throw any numbers at you, but I've been around Hardware for 15 years or so, and I'm sure a lot many people will vouch for what I'm saying - the amount of horror stories heard due to Windows Applications flashing BIOS is far greater and generally heard of then BIOS tools.

BIOS tools aren't infallible either, but it comes down to statistics.

There isn't such a thing as 'True' or 'False' when it comes to this method of preference. Like I said, it's generally proven to be 'safer' - whether you use EZFlash or AFUDOS. At the end of the day it is your choice - but this is just mine (and I do believe most of ours) opinion. Anyone is welcome to correct me here.

I agree about the not using windows thing. Use the ez flash or the other bios flashing tool Asus has.. I have had a chip get a bad flash by using that crap tool so, there you have a person.

true ... wanted to also update you on my system.
Been running 3.8GHZ (475FSB, 1:1, DDR2-951) for well over 24 hours with exhaustive operations. Absolutely no problems with 1406. In fact, as Larry had pointed out, even I was able to drop some of my volts a notch and still stable! Rock Solid, at that!

1406 is good, from what I can tell, real good.

Now you need to get your bad boy back and pop it in.
I'm going to attempt 3.9Ghz stable this weekend, although for 24/7 I think I might just stay at 3.8Ghz

I have 4gb of Corsair Dominator 1066 pc2-8500C5 ram for my P5Q-Deluxe. 0803 bios. Looking at the ram Voltage it states 2.1v. Can anyone please suggest what voltage I should be looking at setting in the BIOS taking overvolting into consideration.

Or should I set it to Auto and leave it?

id suggest just running 2.1v and verify 100% stability.
after that try and bring it down to 2.02v, or lower if at all possible.

2.02. I did get these same sticks to run at stock speeds with 1.8. Not tried bring the voltage down with them running @ 1081.

lowest volt set i got = bios 1306 ,but now can i run PL10 to the mem,whit 490x10,I have not with the other bioser from ASUS.

The biggest reasons of not using Windows to update a BIOS is not the Asus program, but Windows itself. Just bring up task manager and look at all the applications, processes, and services running. I have 51 and my brother-in-law has 90 my dad has over 120! There are too many possible programs to interfere or some other process to fail and crash the system plus any virus, adware, trojans, and malware in general. Not to mention if you are having issues with your BIOS to begin with, then the added stress of Windows will increase the chances of a crash than a very light load of dos or internal bios flash programs. Personally, I'd have to say I've had about 95% of BIOS flash failure being caused by using windows vs dos/internal BIOS flash programs.

I'd like to say I've been using 1406 for a couple of days now with no issues. I usually have 2-3 crashes a day from playing Civ 4 marathon games with 1102 and not 1 crash since the update keeping my 3.6GHz OC (450x8).

i have a Q6600 bought this September, but i think the third core of my CPU was not made so well as the others cores. Above 3.1Ghz i'm getting always 1 error in prime95 on the third core.

Is possible Intel to cut in quality (a looooot) to reduce the cost comparing 1year ago?

it's frustrating because i think core1,2 and 4, they all could easily work with low a vcore, much lower then Core3....

Anyone who flashes a BIOS through windows with more than .. lets say 25-30 processes.. deserves to be punished! :D
I am on Server 2003 which uses more than XP I'm told even though it's quicker ! :D , and I'm running 20 processes right now when I CTRL ALT DEL.
It's amazing that some 'knuckleheads' would not go 'bare-bones' when they flash a BIOS through windows. I know a guy that tried to flash his bios with a virus scanner on! well , what hope is there? :)
I run on a cut down Server 2003 .. and even then I cut out alot of stuff in the windows services.
If people don't know how\what to stop in their services .. well they woudn't be upgrading their BIOS anyway... Windows is full of BLOAT we all know that.
I've flashed many a BIOS through windows 'BARE BONES' and never had a problem.

Actually if you're in Vista ... it's not as easy to kill all relevant processes. Trust me, I've tried it - and it resulted in crashes & freezes. Kill the wrong process and it's a blood bath. I have no experience with Server 2003 so I can't comment on it - but killing processes (Not closing applications, mind you), is not everybody's game. Why bother when you can flash through BIOS?

Actually, yes. If the Application is supporter (i.e., it does not require any dynamic link library resources which are not active during safe mode), then the application will run & do it's job.

I have these same sticks and use 2.02v as someone earlier in the thread found out that the board overvolts by 0.08

I tried stock 2.1v too, earlier, but have not had any problems with the 2.02v

{I just Auto most ram timings}

most ppl use a USB drive/flash drive. (FAT32)
any FAT32 drive will do tho. ive even heard of ppl using their camera or MP3 players to host the bios file...

Well i flashed my board with the Asus Update on Vista and everything was ok. It is a matter of common sense to not have spyware and trojans and disable the antivirus software when doing an update.
As for the others that do it via usb driver, well you have to admit that with the Asus Update you get the latest bios available for your board, and there is also a point here because if you give the example with the guy that was updating the bios with antivirus software running i also can give an theoretical example of someone that downloaded the wrong bin file. So Asus Update pretty much solves the what bios file do i need question.

@Danny ... as ThugsRook pointed out, I don't think many people use Floppy anymore - you don't need to really. Using EZFlash you can use the BIOS stored on your hard drive, or better yet, USB Stick, which I think is what most people use these day, including myself.
Also - I think with the Safe Mode, it's just that generally nothing except Diagnostics/Troubleshoot is ever 'recommended' to be done in Safe Mode, therefore no one ever recommends flashing BIOS through the Safe Mode.

You also have to remember, Safe Mode is not universal across PC's. Safe Mode literally depends on the kind & amount of hardware installed & functioning in your system. Everyone's Safe Mode is not going to act & behave in the same fashion. There is a critical Drivers issue that goes hand-in-hand with Safe Mode.

BTW, the EZ-Flash in the 1402 and 1406 BIOS can access your NTFS Windows Drive. So you don't need any kind of external storage device to just flash BIOS's....though I suppose you need to flash BIOSs anymore, since this last one seems to be the final and it's good.

here is a new 06 ASUS P5Q Deluxe bios 1406

dang, I just had a failed boot on 1406. It started up saying no boot device found. Then I hit ctl+alt+del. On startup I hit del to enter bios and after it finishes all the posts screens and gets ready to go into the BIOS it resets itself and says press F2 to enter bios or F1 to load defaults and continue. I hit F2 to go into the BIOS and the whole thing was reset like I cleared CMOS.

I hope this was just a glitch.
