why on Ramage extreme does not work metest 2.01
when you start with a black screen LITEON DVDRW
all I have time to nb 62 * C OC 74 to LC what is wrong?
Having a b1tch of a time trying to overclock on this board. Cpu Qx9650 and Memory OCZ 1066 Gold Micron D9GTNs.
Trying for 480x8.5 memory 1920mhz 8-8-8-25
Occasionally if I'm lucky I can boot into vista, which I've now just managed to corrupt. Spent the last 8 hours solidly making changes and trying to boot. You know messing with clock skews etc etc.
Slot B2 is more stable than A2 I've found. For A2 to boot at this FSB and memory setting I need to stick +.67mv into the DDRVrefA setting.
The above overclock was very easy for me on the 790i including 485x9 485x10, which I could run all the benches on. However on the Rampage it is eluding me. A lot to shell out on a board, then third part cooling on top, just for a moderate OC.
Anyone care to share setting for a similar quad overclock? I've looked at the 450x8 posted by Eternal I think it was, but 480 is very different.
Thanks

Nice one Eternal_Fantasy, thanks. Grabbed and Flashed. Let's hope I have a bit more joy with this bios:D

Changes?
Excellent news - cheers EF!!. Wonder what the changelog is ?.
My rig is out of action for the next 3 wks as I am changing to W/C I have bits distrubed across all of the bedrooms in my house and am on hols for 2 weeks so will have to wait to test this on. No doubt you guys would have said whether or not this is a keeper by the time I get back.
Just fitted the passive cooling sinks to my board over the w/e and found that it had also warped like 3oh6's to the tune of about 3mm at the top - a word of warning to people using large sinks like the TRUE120 I was using.
Not sure yet. I don't see any difference to the bios options. Need time to test it.Quote:

I won't copy quotes, but maybe I should have read this page first. I seem to have selectively missed the negative comments or warnings in this thread prior to purchase

Not sure if this is positive 480x8 boot first time. Nothing clever. No skews etc. memory in white slots. As I say too early to tell.

Well trying different straps and ratios and I'm back to the same problems. Doesn't want to boot to OS. This is far short of what I can easily achieve on the 790i.
I know it's easy to just give up and blame the hardware, a bad workman blames his tools, but I'm not convinced that patience and a week of tweaking is going to rectify these issues. Especially seeing other's experiencing similar issues.
The other real concern for me is temps. During a prime blend I've seen 72c on 2 of the cores. Not sure how accurate that is, but I would expect sub 60 especially for blend. Someone has mentioned that it's the 16 phase that's possibly behind this. Really can't afford to fry this chip.
As I need to be running a quad core for my 3d work, it's looking like I maybe getting rid of the board. My fault really, should have read up a bit more. Blinded by the fantastic results that the board achieves with 8600s and the right RAM.
Any recommendations or thoughts on this will be appreciated. I'm thinking P5E3 premium maybe? Or is that out of the frying pan into the fire?
RLM
I understand your frustration as I'm in the same boat. I've tried a myriad of different settings and the only thing that wants to work is AUTO.
It's definitely a RAM issue as far as I can see, but I'm not sure yet. I'm going to try the new bios and see where it gets me. I can't even get my memory to run at its rated speed so far, even on crazy relaxed timings.
The OCZ's are certainly an issue as other's have testified. Here in Thailand for DDR3 we have Gskill, Geil and OCZ. I have certainly thought about the Gskill HZs as an option.
However I've been down this road before. I'll end up spending a 1000 pounds on hardware and in the end probably gain very little. lol
I don't know if you've read this http://asusindependent.com/forums/in...pic=291&st=120
He's tried a whole range of memory with the quads, including Gskills and still runs into a brick wall.
Really don't know to be honest:confused: I'll be interested to see what you get out of 0601.
I think what I will do is put these bits back into the P5E3 Deluxe, just to see how I get on. I haven't really pushed that board at all.
RLM
Yes, like you I've tried relaxing all the timings. I have however achieved 1600-1700 at 7-7-7-25 reasonably easy. 266 seems to be the favourite strap.Quote:

After hours of getting no where, I tried one stick in the far slot (closest to the right) and managed to boot into OS. I then stuck the ram back in to slot A2 (Second along to the right) and had another go. The way I managed to get this slot to work in the end was to stick +50mv or +62mv in DDRVref A. I don't know if you have experimented with these settings.
I do have the 1600 platinums here as well. The 2 x 2GB sticks. Are they what you have got? They're in a build I'm doing for someone else. I'll give them a try
RLM
This isn't tested for stability. No fancy settings skews etc. No DDRVref adjustments either. Maybe you will get more luck with 0601.
These are the OCZ PC3 12800s 4gb 2x2 in the white slots. Voltage set to 1.92v for vdimm

Well, I'm waiting to get some more parts for my WC build. I'm on stock cooling right now, so I'm sure that's a factor. But with very mild OCs I'm not getting anywhere. I've even tried setting everything to stock voltages and timings manually and still get crashes.
Here's one more. A bump in a few of the voltages NB to 1.55 Cpu PLL to 1.6 Vdimm to 1.95. Again nothing really clever. Manually set TRFC to 82 and had to loosen Perf level to 8. The standard stuff like static read to disable, but twister is at moderate.
Wouldn't know how stable this is

As I say you may get better stability with this newer bios. It's still very limited for quads compared to other boards, but auto settings do seem to be working better.Quote:

I'm sure your Watercooling will be beneficial:D

Had a bit more a tinker. note my OS has been run ragged so isn't in great form.
The 450x9.5 1800mhz settings weren't very stable. I ran 3dmark06 and it crapped out at the cpu test. This in part was due to me not allowing enough for vdroop though.
Out of lazyness I then set vcore to 1.47v with LLC enabled. This time it ran all the way through. Scored 24,500, I opened CPU-Z for a screengrab the screen went blank and the machine froze.lol. Could be my OS in part, but more tinkering would be needed.
Went back and this time set 425x10 memory 1700mhz 7-7-7-25 Perf 7 Vcore to 1.456 LLC Enabled.
Not setting the world alight with these scores and not exactly prime tested, but maybe it will give you some light at the end of the tunnel:D
Again the PC3 12800s 425x10 1700mhz 7-7-7-25 1T.

Must put the sticks back in my mates rig now, before I do anything silly.

just a little single card GTX 280 shake down action. the setup is all but complete so hopefully
some time this week or weekend i can get the volt mods/insulation done and put up some fun
runs under cold.
100K at 5.3GHz with air cooling on the card was the goal for tonight...check

Hay peeps a little tip: ALWAYS manually set the GTL Ref Values in the BIOS to match the VTT you set. They have a tendency to change when left on AUTO on the RE, and cause random BSOD on Window startup and under load. You can set a VTT that's 4 hour prime stable, then on next reboot it BSOD when loading Windows. After manually setting the GTL Ref, it no longer randomly BSOD!
Set the GTL Ref according to this thread: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=202292
Good luck!!
Thanks EF.
Will definitely take that into account.
That's handy thanks. I know the 790i worked a bit differently, but for gtlrefs and the QX the default values of -50, -50 seemed to do the trick. I used to use a VTT of 1.35v.Quote:

Just a quick calculation based on 1.35v VTT, comes to -43 if I'm right, so not a million miles away.
I have tried experimenting with the GTLrefs on the RE, but nothing significant yet. Will try again. I'm guessing that like the 790i you only enter this into the first two GTLref settings? What about NB gtlref? Would be nice if the bios showed you what Auto settings were being picked.
Thanks again.

A question on cpu temperature. it crossed my mind as to whether realtemp or coretemp are reporting bogus values with this board. A possibility? I mean underwater with moderate volts, can a cpu jump form 30c to mid 60s in the blink of an eye?
I only say this, because if you have LCD Poster set to monitoring cpu temps you see a gradual climb in temps when a load is put on. That seems to make a bit more sense to me, but then I really don't know.
In addition to take prime blend as an example. With 1.45v on the qx and an overclock of 4ghz, I was seeing 63/64c on two cores and the other two were on 72c. This was during the 8k test (I think I'm right), which I'm guessing is closer to a small FTT test. I've never seen this sort of variation before, especially at load.
Just a thought or two.
