Im wondering if the cooler of my old Abit IC7-max3 might be any good.
The dimensions for the clips are approx 4.7mm x 6.1mm to centers of holes so 7.7mm diagonally. The cooler only uses two wires diagonally so im thinking its only the diagonal dimension that is imprtant. The wires bend slightly so it may work..

@nealh Lol, I missed that Not quite used to this forum yet instant messaging don't seem 2 work so have been playinfg around elswhere. Have stopped ocing my rig having bottoomed things a while back so have not been so active on the st. I got a strange feeling reading some of the HG post re Rd600 where he 's almost talking pps out of board saying the new infinity can do as much. Would link to thread but the St seems to have gone down between mr starting this reply & getting a beer.

We have a long established soap here in the UK called coronation st. Seems that the goings on at DFI St are much more dramatic:eek:

What has come as a suprise is the insight hg has given into the state of play with DFI.
I take on board the points HG makes, but think the cost cutting has it's origins with the switch from amd to conroe to which DFI like many was slow to react to. DFI must have lost markert share/sales to asus year on year when looking at the stampede to conroe. I think that in 2005, which must rank as it's most successful year DFI didn't make a fortune in profit, so any dip in sales/market share means the bootom line looks bad - so cost cuts.
Even Nvidia have been caught out by this shif which is why it's pushing 680i which finally statrs to look like a decent nvidia chipset 4 intel, after a few false starts & issues I read this a while back which i think is spot on.

I just got in this morning after being away for the Christmas break and have had a chance to review this thread. It seems that the issue regarding the NB temps needs clarifying. A few of the people who have received the board to date have some early samples where the heatsink was not entirely machined flat. In effect an "arched dome" is being created under the heatsink and only partial contact is being made with the die. Obviously this will cause temps to skyrocket. To those who are having this issue, please request a "flat" heatsink from your sources at DFI if you want one. Once the heatsink is replaced the NB will idle at a stable 45-50 degrees in BIOS. This is one of the reasons why the board is not available in stores yet. We need to ensure that the correct heatsink is in place before releasing the product. I have been assured that when the board hits the stores this issue will not be present. If for some odd reason a user experiences absurdly high temps at BIOS idle contact your DFI branch office for a replacement. I will keep a number of "flat" heatsinks here at our Europe branch for this purpose. I suspect my counterparts in North America will do the same. I don't think that when you guys get the board that there will be any problems with NB temp, but I prefer to plan ahead:)

If i remember correctly Tony said 1.5v was giving around 50C and he had rigged a fan on. Do we know if Tony had a dodgy heatsink or not. I stall can't see any advantage in going for a non standard wire arrangement.Quote:
NB Core 1.2V 1.3 to 2.18V, this option has a profound effect on overclocking, increased voltage is needed for 500fsb, 2V is VERY high though so make sure you have very good cooling if you are pushing the voltage high. Around 1.5V will get you 450fsb.

Thats something you would have to ask Tony about, as he got his board directly from our HQ. I know that the ones I tested before sending out to European medias are OK. I changed the coolers myself.

since the thread regarding dfi-street has been deleted for some reason i'd like to say something about the admin there slating this board.
first he states this is a $300 board against a $150 975 infinity and therefor bad value.
he is WRONG!!!...on dfi's direct pricelist the RD600 is exactly 25% more than the 975 infinity...not 100% (the version without promise raid is only 15% more)
about it not being faster clock for clock in super-pi...granted that is the case but he tries to speak to the air/water market who according to him shouldn't care about a millisecond difference.
at this point in time this is not a 'pi benching board but i wouldn't write it off yet as it hasn't even left beta testing.
on the other hand this RD600 mobo is designed for crossfire with a chipset made by ATI who designed crossfire in the first place...
and supprise supprise at full tilt with high rez setting the crossfire performance is far superior to the i975 chipset....(check anandtech)
having driven the RD600 myself i can say that once one has been able to leave memory dividers behind in favour of pure asynchronous ram/fsb tweaking it will be difficult to go back.
frankly i'm sick of the intel based motherboards that behave strangely differently depending on the divider used and one always winds up with iether cpu or memory unoptimised due to the lack of freedom in choice of speeds to run.
the RD600 looks like a million bucks, has no vdroop, massive voltage on tap, crossfire + physics ability...and best of all complete freedom as to what ram/fsb speeds one can use....easily enough features to justify 25% extra cost over the infinity 975...
finally in one sentance: this board is insane and i mean in a good way
I can't wait to get my hands on my first conroe and DFI RD600

The 8800 works fine in single card mode, do not have "8800 SLI" drivers that work so 8800 SLI is an unknown, at least for me.Quote:
