Separate Dies can do all of the exact same power management tricks that a single die can.
It is all about integration and production cost reduction.

GPU sitting next to memory controller communicates much faster with CPU and memory, too...consider how fast is dedicated VGA memory compared to the memory (=system RAM) which the integrated GPU core in northbridge has.

Just takethe example of side-port memory vs main memory vs dedicated vga memory.

Because multicore is the future, and GPUs have lots of cores in less die space ;-)
