Yes I do believe I read a while back it was slated for January, so it will be interesting to see if they come to market with it or not and do what Charlie has stated and let it die quietly. I can see where neither AMD nor Nvidia would want this chip, but since Intel is somewhat backing it I could see them hording it for their own integrated GPU design as a way of combining the integrated gpu with a dedicated gpu giving them a significant advantage over both AMD and Nvidia.

well the weird thing is that intel doesnt make a board with hydra on it... then again intel boards are close to non existent on the market, and they arent exactly very popular and regarded as highend mainboards... so hydra needs msi asus gigabyte or another big player to actually implement it...

i really have no idea what happened here... i just hope things are really just delayed and not cancelled...

i do believe this chip will be intel's justification for larrabee, the pitch line looking something like this: "sure larrabee isn't as good as the hd5870 or the gtx380 for games, but with the hydra chip it can still help out and do all of your encoding/crunching/physics without ever having to change drivers or cards. brand agnostic multi gpu tech is very good for intel's baby gfx business, now when that baby grows up we'll see how long they keep hydra around....

So if this does come out nvidia is inline to lose a lot of money from sli licenses. Shouldn't ati be backing this thing full force? they lose nothing by this thing working, in reality they gain by having better multi gpu performance. That is why I wonder if this thing really works, if it did do what it claims I would think ati would be doing cartwheels down the hall ways in their headquarters just thinking about how much nvidia stands to lose and they could gain by using this on thier x2 variant cards.

It could be good or bad for NV or AMD. Basically, depending on how strong the branding in at the time. The weaker name will typically get the worse end of this deal.

No longer do people have to buy the same model of card, when they go dual card. They can get whatever model they want from whatever company they want. Additionally, it changes how people upgrade which makes things alot more complicated.

This really doesn't benefit AMD as much as it hurt NV from get SLI licencing fees.

Yes it does benefit AMD directly by weakening their competitor by reducing their income. But in retrospect the Hydra chip will also correct NV's bad PR when it comes to SLi and I am sure AMD does not like someone coming in and correcting the ignorance of their competitor either. After all AMD can count on NV for acting like a 'bunch of dancing bananas'. :up: One thing about always acting like a bunch of dancing bananas is that it makes you predictable. If all this is true.. theres one hell of a strong grounds for a lawsuit. You wouldn't even need to be a big company with a crack team of lawyers to win it. I have detested nvidia for some time now due to their.. "business philosophy", if you can even call it that. I hope NV get spanked hard by AMD/ATi and intel in the coming months with Larrabee and the HD5k.

They had a Hydra chip on a RD890 reference board pictured a while back. Crossfire(X) is open so i agree AMD can only gain from this tech

who would sue them though? and yes, i think you would need an expensive team of lawyers, nvidia isnt just going to sit back... for sake of pr alone they would build up a strong defense...
