It seems AMD i still having problems with the Propus cores. And that they decided to use Deneb cores. Not so smart if you ask me. It will cost them quite a lot of money. I really hope they will get real native non L3 cache cores out of those fabs. Those cores are like 30% smaller in die size. And now they are selling Deneb cores for the same price.... Same goes for The Phenom II X2 550. Deneb core on a dual core. If you are lucky you can unlock it to a 950 BE :S and that for just 90$.
Looking forward to see the OC results:-)
Thanks for the unlocking info
Hey it means there not losing money as they would have just thrown them out otherwise, personally I think it's a wise move, and with the ability to unlock etc.. makes it an even greater buy theres even people on this forum who have brought 5/6/7 550's just to try unlock them if they dont, they sell them on but not bad selling 5 chips etc.. that would have been thrown out :D
I wouldn't say they have problems, but they have piled up some quantity of Deneb dice with defects in L3 that can't be fixed so they decided to use those as Propus.I'm quite positive that in October or November we will see a "true" Propus based Athlon X4s.These will be more power savvy and probably OC just as good (if not better!).
Imagine Athlon II X4 with 3Ghz default clock and unlocked multiplier and voltage control - and costing 130$-AND it's uber cheap to make! That would be a superb deal! You'd have a great performing quad core chip,no matter if you work with single or multithreaded applications or even if you are gaming. Boards are already cheap, but DDR3 will go even lower in time. A win platform in my opinion.
AMD should've went with using two Regor dies in MCM if they have problem with the Propus core. Now they are just wasting a lot of die space it seems.
We don't know that the L3 is defective in any way on the "Deneb" based A2 x4's.
Could be something as simple as AMD being late with the "Propus" X4's and/or and happened to have a stock pile of the ""Deneb" ones (which they know won't sell as Phenoms),at the same time they need something VS the
Intel's P-55/i7-i5 offerings in September (now) so it all makes perfect sense: enter the AMD Athlon 2 X4 "limited edition".
or should we call it ""Chinook X4""
Christmas comes early in 2009 - thanks to Chinook (great find) and AMD.
If their marketing department has anything to do with this "ünlocking
magic" (X2/X3/L3) - they deserve a big year end bonus
Many will buy it just for that (unlocking/extra/free) reason alone.
BTW what's the deal on A2 X3 ? Possibly a core and L3 unlock?
Talk about good values: "full" QC for under $100 - can't say no to that.
Well if its the case that they stock them because people find a Phenom II to expensive. I would say they could better lower the price of the phenoms a little bit. So the competition against the I5 and te newer I7 8xx gets stronger.
But then they would loose money one people buying a "real" phenom II x4...
They have to lower the prices of the PHII X4 anyway. Now the I5 and cheaper I7 8xx are on the market for lower prices then the I7 920 and with the same performance the PHII X4 lost its price performance leadership :'(.
i7 920
279$

i7 860
299$

Go figure
We need to wait a few weeks for the prices to settle ( and for the DX11
cards to arrive) then see what is a better value.Seems like a mess right now,
on the Intel side anyway.
Well the i7 860 is faster then a i7 920. Do to its huge turbo boost. it gets upped to 3.2 GHz vs only 2833 for the i7 920. Its not strange it beats the 920. But intel is realy leaving the i7 9xx buyers in the cold right now.
Awesome
And I thought the X2 550 was a great value! Hopefully most that hit retail will have solid L3 and will unlock.
been waiting for AII X4 to come here in Indonesia, but apparently wont be in near time, as PII X2 550 stock pile is great in number.
the distributors here afraid that a hundred bucks AII X4 will hurt PII X2 550 sales
In Spain (www.alternate.es) now it's cheaper to buy a PII X2 550 (92,9€) than an AII X4 620 (94,9€).
Last week the PII X2 550 was 109,9€ (I bought one for my moms comp, unlocked to X4 with a Asrock 790GMH/128M). Looks like I chose the wrong week to buy it, I'd spent the 17€ somewhere else :D
So right now we have the same unlockable chip to X4 ~950BE, at the same price tag. But now you have to unlock the L3 instead of 2 cores.
I don't think the L3 is defective in many of the cases, just either a large batch of Denebs at AMD fabs or Propus a little late...
Add to that the possibility of OC they give, close to 4ghz on air (I got 3.8 1h stable with the stock AMD X2 cooler at 1.45v, 70ºC of course :p:) and you have yet again the AMD story of "buy the cheapest get the fastest" :ROTF: Opty 165 anyone?
I Bought a Athlon X4 620 for my Brother. He is gonna use it in his HTPC/Server. He had a Athlon 4x50E but it was to slow for HD 1080P content. A Phenom 1 9850 did the job but its using to much power and causing extra cooler noise.
It has a other code then the one listed above:
ADX620WFK42G1
CADAC AD 0932EPDW
The newest Phenom i ever had was a 0922 (95 watt 945)
That new Phenom was a:
HDX945WFK4DG1
CACYC AC 0922MPMW
I also have a 955:
HDZ955FBK4DG1
CACYC AC 0915FPMW
So there is a chance i really have a Propus version here.
^^ Have you tried to unlock it via ACC? Can you nake it? :D
Nope i have not tried ACC. With my DFi board i only have one bios that can unlock cores and stuff and that one is giving problems :(. I'm not gonna remove te spreader. To big risk of killing it + its not my cpu :) So there is no real way to know it for sure..... My Brother only has boards with SB650 and SB700 so no ACC there.
Maybe make some test to see if they're on par with chinook's results without L3?
I think i can do that. But i dont think you would see difference between a Propus and a Deneb core (deneb with L3 disabled that is)
You're right, if you cant try ACC it can still be a Deneb. I was right out of bed :hammer::hammer:
Is this processor only available in Europe? I haven't seen any stock in Canada yet.
