Looking to line out a dual hexie (Istanbul)

For the love of Bob, what have I done?

Sidenote: This will be multi-stage. Once everything is here I'll be able to see the BIOS chip personally and can then order a new one from BIOSMAN--the newest version should let the Istanbul chips work. At that time I'll also get to see if the board comes with mounting brackets or not. If not, I'll have to order those at the same time. They will enable me to use AM2 heatsinks.

I need some serious back pattage here to feel good about myself. :) I really hope the WCG team can appreciate this.

Looks like a ton of fun with some new toys. $1300 for dual hexies is pretty good too. Be sure to let us know how they do :up:

Good job not bloating the budget to $2,000. This way, even when the 2.2Ghz Hexies come down to $250 next January, you'll know you made an awesome investment either way :up:

At 3.0GHz versus my 2.2GHz, I really doubt it'll be much of a competition. heh Oh well, it'll be fun anyway. I'm also secretly hoping for 3GHz, but I'm also not holding my breath. Nobody knows how these 6-core chips clock yet. Server boards also have notoriously underengineered power supplies when it comes to overclocking. I guess they figure people will be using parts within spec. P-shah.

It'll be interesting to see how high you can OC... unfortunately I can't OC at all, due to board limitations. Known issue on ALL Dual LGA1366 mobos, they can't OC past 136-138Mhz BCLK :mad:
Otherwise this thing could do 3,5Ghz easy and REALLY start to fly :shakes:

I even have a beefy enough Vitec 6 phase analogue VRM that would cope pretty well with OCing :(

I should get my stuff Thursday. If the BIOS is new enough, I'll have enough gear to at least do a test fire, even if I don't have a permanent cooling setup.

If the bios isnt new enough, what would be the easiest way to get these new CPUs working? Buying a cheap older Shanghi and flash the bios, buy a new bios chip, etc?

Permanent cooling solutions are overrated - I modded a pair of standard Core i7 boxed coolers ghetto-style to fit on my Gainstowns to get the rig up and running :rofl:

If it isn't new enough, the cheapest and easiest way to get up to speed is to buy a new BIOS chip with the latest firmware already flashed to it. BIOSMAN will do it for $27. There are probably cheaper options out there, but it's still a lot cheaper than getting a CPU for a one-off event. I had to do this before with my dual Barcelona.

Oh, I hear ya. My tower is vertical, so while I can simply plop on some Phenom X4 retail box HSFs for test firing, things get trickier when I stand the case back up. I could probably rig up some kind of wire retention system, but I don't know if I'd want to risk $1000 worth of silicon on it.

Yes, Cinebench is gonna be interesting, even tho it doesn't represent the latest developments properly...

Here is a run I did earlier today :)

I'll run anything you guys want on any OS you want, provided it's either mainstream or you can tell me how to do it.

Chipset wise, there aren't any alternatives for the most part. It's just nVidia's "Pro" line and some Serverworks chipsets. They all suck. AMD's first multi-socket chipsets in ages will come out this fall.

Wait, they SENT $1000 worth of cpus in padded envelope? Envelope wasn't even in a box? I ordered athlon x2 2300 from NE for like $40 back in September 08 and it was in a box.

If that's true it comes close to neweggs, no bubble wrap half filled box of peanuts for hard drives.

That's exactly what I was thinking, McRuff. Yes, that's precisely what they did. Two OEM CPUs inside a padded envelope with a UPS sticker on it. What's next: Bare CPU with Newegg sticker on the IHS?
