I set everything at 2200Mhz, save and reset. Get back in BIOS to change to 2400Mhz or 2600Mhz, reboot and it takes about 6-7 seconds before the PSU clicks everything off, then fans spin, and then hangs with the red LED by the memOK button on. Have to switch off PSU and wait a bit before trying to get it to post again, and it gets to "Overclock Failed, Press F1". I started with slightly tighter timings and less voltage, and slowy loosened them and increased voltage to this point.

1. Flashing LED will have to ask HQ. Leakage to 5VSB from PSU (USB etc), nothing can be done about that.


2. Put the board in S3 from Windows and see if it will power on from mouse/keyboard, EFI hands this all off to OS.

Max out all third timings to see if it will POST. Then tighten individually if it does.

To answer your question though; yes at this point I'm running 2 2x4GB kits (that wasn't what was going on with the Corsair 4x4GB failing, that was an actual 4 piece kit)

The ram posted and did Spi at 2600Mhz once, but cant get it to do it again. That was on a 3570K. Im now using a 3770K that I got from here that was able to do ~2800Mhz.



EDIT: Using the 22x multi and pushing the BCLK to 105+, I can run over 2300Mhz without issue. 10-11-11-25-1T with 1.65Vdimm. No other changes needed (though Im working on lower sub timings).

Pick one place and I will keep my responses there, too. In any case your issues might well be down to 4 dimm stability. Putting two kits together is always tricky to get stable on ICs that are capacitive.

Hi guys am getting a post code of 25 and voltage is not helping anytime I try ram at 2600 MHz. I read Rajas guide and it says Imc may not be capable. This is with the new gskill trident x 8 gb kit as well as a 4 gb kit of gskill flares.

I also need 1.280 to run 4.5 ghz stable. Any help? Any other voltages to play with to get this going or to get CPU vcore down?

I am in a similar boat any advice on trying to stabilize 4.5 at 1.2v?

I should have probably come in here and asked Raja in the first place about this I guess if anybody will know he will.

Raja all I have done is loaded asus optimal form EZ BIOS, then save and exit, then gone into advanced mode and upped the multi by x2 for a x43 4429Mhz.

Then fixed vcore at 1.2v

I have literally done nothing else, any advice?

I have great stability at 4229Mhz fixed 1.1v
AIDA64 runs perfectly @ 4429Mhz fixed 1.15v - but everything else plays up, this is also the case at 1.17 - in the end I am trying 1.2v :( which seems pretty high from what I have seen for only ~4.4Ghz


ANY tips about BIOS settings and voltages would be awesome, specially the ones which seem very obvious to you, I assure you they are not to me :D

My RAM is well within spec also.


EDIT: I have just seen the 'ASUS Z77 UEFI Tuning Guide for overclocking' you have there, this looks GREAT! I will get reading that as soon as I get back!

Hi,

Select the Samsung profile to start with. If still no POST, then use latency Boundary 14 and see if it will POST. If that does not work either then IMC is not good enough for it.

2400 with tight timings can be made faster than 2600 anyway. I will update the guides soon to help you guys out a bit.

As for Vcore, this is very much going to be CPU specific and to a certain extent is also fired up by DRAM frequency. Once you get the memory dialled in, tweak BCLK skew and see if it allows you to drop Vcore a bit.

My first change to Intel in 15 years and must say I am quite happy with it till now.

Give it some time, and work through things systematically and you should find an optimal OC.

Well that's a no go so looks like the imc is not very good on this chip. Btw what does the blck do? And how do we tune it?

Secondly:

1. I'm not talking about sporadic flashing, but about the Sleep feature where the Power LED just blinks to indicate that the PC is in sleep mode. The easiest solution to my issue is just disconnecting it completely, but I'd still like to know when my PC is on, since it's otherwise inaudible.

2. S3 works well, but I sometimes do need to turn the PC off, and reaching for the power button every time is a chore with some case placements.
The last Asus boards I owned, the P5W-DH Deluxe (a board from 2005!) and the P5Q Pro both had the option to turn the PC on with any USB device (mouse/keyboard/remote), and any of the other boards I've owned had the option to at least turn it on using a USB mouse/keyboard. The 8Z77-I Deluxe is the first Asus board I own that doesn't seem to have this functionality :(

Both of these things seem like things that could be easily implemented on the UEFI level, similarly to what ASRock did on some of its' boards (H61M-VS for example) where they seem to have replaced the "Turn Off" function of the board with with an S5 hybrid of sorts, making turning the PC back on after having it "Off" achievable by means of USB devices and shortened boot times by skipping much of the reglar POST in the process.

Pass that idea on to HQ perhaps (if it's not patented), I'm sure many would love this functionality on their Asus boards ;)

Any word on the bios fix for the 6950's flashed to 6970?

BCLK = reference clock which is supplied to the clock synthesizer in the CPU from which the operating frequency for the CPU, IMC and DRAM is derived.

BCLK skew, in your case just try moving in upwards in steps of 1 and checking if you can lower Vcore. After that try negative, too.

I do not know how to describe this , how can one stop the Mhz frequency from jumping up and down. one time is at 3.5 the other something else.
Where/what is the option in bios in order to have the frequency set to something.
if i do 100x 40 i expect 4000Mhz- i get anything from 3,5 up to 4.0.

You can set Windows to High performance mode in power options or disable SpeedStep in UEFI. TBH leaving it intact does not really hurt performance unless you are running competitive benchmarks so it is fine to leave it as is.

Tried to disable speedstep but no joy.
I read that might need to disable the Intel C"s
(from bit tech Intel Core i7-3770K CPU Review)

With a decent quality motherboard all you should need to do is disable the Intel C-states (or adjust the CPU power levels up) and then increase the core voltage and multiplier.

I also get some sound destortion in like YouTube clips, game+Skype which I think comes from the CPU when it's adjusting the frequency (up or down). Maybe this is a different issue.
However it's an issue to be looked later on.
I admit last time I tried to OC anything was on a q68xx CPU
So starting new again, in need of some help pls.

Hi,

Nobody has their boards setup this way, by default all of this is active and the paramaters have to be turned off if the user wants. Reason for that is because Intel have done a very good job of allowing low power modes to work, and they have no negative impact on overclocks. Many users are happy to utilize freqeuncy and power reduction when the system is not being taxed to save power and reduce heat output so we don't disable any of it automatcially but rather allow them to disable whatever does not suit them. Set the C states off also if you need to (it's in the same part of UEFI as SpeedStep) and or set Windows to high performance mode and the multi will not change (thats the easiest way really, and it is so simple to do).

Sound issue is likely something else. Without knowing what the setup is or the nature of the "distortions", it is difficult to say what the problem is. You may wish to contact support in your region for deeper help on debugging this if you are stuck or if there is some kind of compatibility issue.

Will double check the SpeedStep, It was turned off this morning. Will check as well the Win7 settings, the high performance mode was previously enabled, will check that as well.
Is there any relation between UEFI settings and asus ai suite in terms of the suite overriding any settings done in UEFI upon load?

If you are asking about voltages and such. Ai suite will use voltages from UEFI as base. If you adjust anything in the OS, once you reboot the system will revert to UEFI again.

Clari fication about crossfire setup.
On the p8z77 ws chapter 2-7 and 2-8 . It says that crossfire setup should use PCIe x16_1 and PCIe x16_2 for PCI express x16 graphics cards.
Just to confirm this is the case.
You see on page 2_7 it says that pcie x16_2 operates at x8 mode

EDIT: I might be misleading you good folks here.

Iam trying to confirm what the proper setup is for a crossfire configuration.
Is it
a) PCIe x16_1 and PCIe x16_2 for PCI express x16 graphics cards.
Or
b) PCIe x16_1 and PCIe x16_3 for PCI express x16 graphics cards.

I found a work-around for the 6950->6970 bug. I use onboard video as well as the 6950 and I noticed if i set in the bios for the 6950 to be the first initiated graphics then i have 2 issues:
1)All my additional options in CCC go away. The Power Settings in CCC disappear etc.
2)Wont boot with the 6950 on the 6970 bios

Fix/Workaround is to set it so the Integrated Graphics are the first/main initialized graphics in the bios. Effects:
1)the post screen is now only on my 2nd and 3rd smaller monitors. This is a small drawback but not a big deal
2)the Win7 splash screen shows up on only my 2nd and 3rd monitors since the Intel graphics is now the "main" graphics selected in the bios
3)Once i get to the Windows login then all my monitors kick on and everything is fine
4)With this method i can boot using the 6970 bios and i get all my CCC options back.

Unfortunately i think this would not be a valid workaround for someone not using both Intel graphics and dedicated for multi monitors because they would not have another monitor to see the post screens etc like i do. Just thought you guys might like to know...

Formula should be soon.

Rampage is for Intel EE edition platforms only so no chance of that until Intel releases the next platform.

so formula is the way to go, as there's no EE in sight ...

hopefully it's out within the next couple of weeks. upgrade of my equipment is due. don't know how long i will be able to stand by especially as 680 and 670 are available for some time now. might consider a mv5g if it takes too long.

Going back to my question of why can i not disable throttling.

My theory of why one can not adjust to full load with out throttling is this.
There is some interaction between CPU ratio (manual page 3-14) and Enhanced Intel Speedstep as well as Turbo mode (manual page 3-15)
Cpu ration above 35 turns the following to enabled by default.
Therefore the base value x100 times the CPU ration will give you 3.5Ghz. The CPU will operate at 3.5Ghz.
Increasing the CPU ratio turns ON or Enables both Enhanced Intel Speedstep as well as Turbo mode, and there fore you have throttling.
One can disable Enhanced Intel Speedstep but not Turbo mode.
Now if this is by design i dont know. I would like however to be able to "lock" the CPU ratio to what ever speed i wish for what ever purpose that is.

So dont overclock using turbo mode, use base multiplier instead and disable turbo.

I am completely failing to understand why you would want to do this though. Why waste electric and stress your components when at idle? :shrug:

I have a problem with the P8z77 Deluxe, always the BIOS show me " CPU ERROR Over Voltage" I know but I need to use more than 1.55V and I can't I see all the BIOS and move some parameters but nothing happens.

Do what user Pilsy said or set Windows to High Performance Mode. Nobody else has the issues you cite if they wish to retain maximum frequency. The other poroblem here is that you are years out of date in terms of understanding just how good Intel's low power modes are. The impact of the power saving features is miniscule and has no bearing on 24/7 system performance whatsoever. The gains far outweigh the ramping delay.

I think your beliefs are affected by the fact that you have upgraded from an old system and are somehow caught in the mindset that C-States and SpeedStep hurt overclocking stability. Things have moved a long way since the conception of these technologies, both in terms of how most people understand the tech, and the technology itself (DVID for example).


Also don't confuse "throttling" with Speedstep functions. Throttling in modern terms relating to these platforms is modulation under full load. SpeedStep is for frequency reduction under idle-light load conditions.

If that's the case then the multiplier should stay fixed unless you are using an old installation of Windows.

One piece of bad news: I couldn't wait any longer for bios fix for Deluxe board for LSI cards and had to abandon it.
One piece of good news: I purchased Asus P8Z77 WS instead, whose compatibility with LSI cards has recently been fixed by bios 0703:)
Could you please clarify what neo_rtr asked before (I feel confused as well):

1) No it's not Gen 3, those lanes are route via PCH.
2) Because both of those are Gen 3.0 and tied to on die CPU PEG bus.
3) Yes slot _2 is X8 only, it takes 8 lanes from _1.

What will the best program to úse in order to get a proper CPU Temp Reading.
Is it the AI suite from ASUS , Real Temp, AIDA? I notice some differences in values among these three.
AI suite reports higher than AIDA for example.

In spec page it says that it supports 16+16, or 16+8+8, or 8+8+8+8. From this point of view it is supposed that all x16 slots are Gen3 and are coming from CPU via PLX, not PCH. But then page 2-7 says that bottom black is Gen2 only. Where is truth?

Okay from HQ, they say that is a typo in the manual, that slot should be gen 3. In which case mux is on 16 CPU PEG lanes, to each of those slots.

Currently iam doing what the manual is saying in page 2_8.

Check the manual for lane allocation under various loading conditions, it will tell you which slots stay at which bandwidth or should. Not all slots can do 16X and when more than one card is used, 8X is max to any slot.

AFAIK when any other slot is loaded, each slot will give a maximum of 8x. The only two slots that can do 16X are _1 and _3, but only if you are running ONE card only, dual cards or more and its 8x.

When I read the manual i can't really understand what it says, its so confusing and i think its something wrong, thats why i ask for your or asus help with that. Then the P8Z77-WS is advertised as a board that can do 2times 16x - see asus official specs for that board it says dual x16.

Hi, got my Sabertooth Z77 together today and on firing it up I get RED CPU LED and a constant beep. Disconnected nearly everything and still get the Red CPU LED, beep went away. From computer panel I only have the power switch wired. No Ram, no Cooler, no Vid Cards, no Drives etc.
Using a Corsair 750 Watt PSU which I've had for about a year.
Intel Core i7 3770
Sabertooth Z77.
Noctua NC14
Bios 1015

Would greatly appreciate any help. Saw a similar post on older motherboards and Raja mentioned trying one stick in 4th slot - that didn't do anything for me. Also - I updated to latest UEFI before I ever powered up. Seemed to go successfully.

Which DRAM are you using?

Check the CPU socket for any bent pins, clear CMOS with CPU removed, remount and try again with a single memory module.

The fix is implemented and undergoing validation, but we have two UEFI updates in the piepline that will come before it. So I don't have a firm ETA, just confirmation that a patch is going to be released.

Here are my screenshots.
My Archon doesn't allow me to install 7970 into PCI-Ex16_1 slot, so I had to use PCI-Ex16_2.
According to GPU-Z and HWiNFO64, PCI-Ex16_2 with 7970 installed is x8 Gen3 slot (even though PCI-Ex16_1 is left empty, PCI-E_2 is not given all 16 lanes).

LSI 9565 (native PCI-Ex8 2.0) is installed into PCI-Ex16_4 slot.

No. But I believe it is x16 as long as nothing is installed in Slot _4.
To sum up I conclude for myself:
1) Slot _4 (black) is Gen3 (there is a typo in manual saying it is Gen2);
2) Slots _1 and _3 are x16 Gen3 as long as no card is installed in the corresponding black slot (_2 and _4);
3) Black slots _2 and _4 are all the way x8 Gen3 even if the corresonding blue slot (_1 or _3) is not populated.
4) CPU cooler can interfere with Slot _1 on P8Z77 WS. Archon doesn't allow me to install videocard in Slot _1 (I can make it installed but Archon's fins will scratch it, so I gave up).

Maybe it's a matter of monitoring discrepancy of both boards and not hardware flaw, because AFAIK P8Z77 WS enjoys the same T-topology as all Asus Hi-end Z77 boards (Raja@Asus pls. confirm this).

Wait. I think you you messed everything.
There are two PLX chips which HWiNFO showed: PLX 8747 (located on WS, GEN3) and PLX 8647 (4870 X2, GEN2). These are different chips, and different generation (Gen3 and Gen2).
So you have 2 Radeon 4870 X2 cards, right? And you installed them into Slots _1 and _2? So the total number of RV770 chips is 4?
If so, your cards are given only x8 lanes each, not x16 when installed in slots _1 and _2. But each RV770 chip is given x16 lanes through PLX 8647 which is located on 4870 X2, not WS.
Honestly I don't think that your configuration is optimal, cause the latency isn't good there. See, RV770 -> PLX 8647 -> PLX 8747 -> CPU System Agent, that's how signal is routed, and latency is added at each interim silicon.
At least try to rearrange the cards, and use slots _1 and _3, not _1 and _2.

However.
As the rig is water cooled, the time and effort to remove the VGA cards and move them a slot is equivelant to, buying a new gtx 680 Hydro and be done with it.

I run a quick test with sanctuary 3 or 2 GPUs enabled. I got exact same results.
Did not looked at it any more. However i google it with out any hits.

If the iGPU is not connected and Virtu is not being used, it will be "off". A very small amount of power will be drawn from the IGP rail which is separate from CPU VCC. Other than that there is nothing really to worry about here. No need to stress. :)

You asked which ports are USB 2.0 only, I assumed you knew that vendors don't use external controllers for USB 2.0 only ports :)

I'll rephrase: Any ports that are not blue in color are Intel USB 2.0. We don't use additional USB 2.0 only controllers.

So, one can use USB 2.0 only ports by ingoring/not using any ports that are blue, or by using the ports that are not blue :D In other words, use the black ones.


The reason nobody uses additional controllers to provide USB 2.0 only ports is because most chipsets have upwards of 10 native USB 2.0 ports as standard.

Update: After I connected additional Molex 4-pin power cable to WS, I found out that memory is OK to post/Prime95 at 1,5v, same as on Deluxe. Not sure if these two things are connected though.

@DEFLORATOR Now that you mention it, i have noticed a delay in the boot process.
I push the On button. It takes a few seconds before system boots up. I maybe connect a 4pin Molex.
Any one else noticed a delay at start up?

My M5G does that too. I live with it, no Molex power on this board so I cannot test that.

Have not done it yet as iam trying to see what kind of behavior it demonstrates. Foe example this morning. PC was cold over night. It would not come up. Pressed power button, nothing. On/Reset button on the M/B are on. After maybe 10seconds pressed /hold power button Then it worked.
Pressing onboad "on" button did not do anything. Seems it's warming up. Then kicks in. On the other hand what i just wrote has no real value. However this is how it feels for me.

I decided to try something yesterday after reading the manual, however because my IQ is only in the mid 100's I require some clarification.


I had 2x4GB RAM in A2 and B2 for dual channel.

I had a spare 2x2GB of slightly faster speed laying about and thought I would give something a go after reading the manual.

I put 2x2GB in A2 and B2
Then 2x4GB in A1 and B1

This will dual channel the 2x2GB and single channel the 2x4GB ?

It will be dual channel in flex mode. Not the best thing to do for overclocking as it will limit you, but if its all you have and the system is stable go ahead. :)

It is reported as dual channel in CPUID I do not know if my cache and memory bench numbers reflect this or not I did have some other programs running while I ran it, as it was only just to gain a ball park figure.

I am already limited with o/c anyway, I was only able to get my chip to 4.5, trying to reach 4.6 meant around 1.29 vcore for full stability and quite frankly I did not like that.

I settled for 4.5 at 1.24v for 24/7 specially as I have yet to work out offset.


I dunno, what do you think? would I be better just pulling out the extra and running the 2x4GB or leaving it in the current configuration and having 12GB RAM.

Both dual channel kits are pretty much the same speed with the 2x2GB having a SLIGHT edge.

Don't worry about what flex mode is (just the mode of operation for the chipset, nothing to worry about). If it is working fine and you are happy with it, leave it as is.

The problem with the Asus Maximus V Gene Motherboard

Today, I was glad to plant my new PC based on Asus Maximus V Gene motherboard and the Intel Core i5 3570k processor.
Everything was Ok, until I turned my PC on. The thing is, that it just hasn’t started. Button LEDs and “audio track” indicator were on, while the post-code indicator lights were off, coolers weren’t spinning and CPU was cool.

I tried to do this:
1. Disconnected everything from the motherboard and kept only the CPU and power supply (I also tried to remove and insert them back).

2. Tried it with another PSU (which was 100% working condition).

3. Dumped bios button on the rear panel (what’s typical - reset works .. but after the pressing indicators have started flashing). I updated BIOS to version 0813 with the help of USB Flashback. The upgrade process commits, but motherboard doesn’t boot anyway.

4. Connected motherboard to the laptop via the ROG connector. The PC sees the board, even monitors chipset’s and CPU’s voltage and temperature. It seems like everything is OK, but I really do not know how it should work on it’s best. That’s because it is the first time I’m using this function. I’ve tried to turn on the PC via ROG, but still the same, zero reaction.

5. Checked the board for the presence of mechanical damages, and I found nothing.

I clearly understand that the board is on warranty, but the situation is that i’ve bought it via online store. So, the exchange/repairment processes would waste lot’s of time (it should be sent to another city to wait for inspection and making a desicion to send it back for the new one)

If anyone has ideas, I would appreciate it a lot!

Do you have M5G and 3570K? or you just quoted other peeps?

I run/tested (3) M5Gs and (18)+ 3570Ks (malay/costa) on air/h2o/ln2 without problem.

Please give me a link to the BIOS 1205 for the v-Deluxe.
