Heck I had a Hate/hate relationship with linux until I started using a proprietary shell based on darwin hehe, in my computers. then I just had to get into terminal in order to get things to work properly LOL. I'm thinking about asking a friend of mine to look at the firmware for this board, because he has done some amazing work modding bios'es for the os I just referenced. he may be able to fix the acpi bugs that are present in the firmware. Can someone tell me where the links to the newest firmware versions are.
BTW on another note, does anyone know what the pinout is on the two power plugs, and how do you guys get regular power supplies to work with it, I mean do you short the green pin to ground?
Also does this board take ddr2 ecc ram? and what speed? I'm gonna go on ebay and buy a bunch of small cheap sticks, how good is the memory handling with this setup, do I have to have at least 4 sticks present with 4 processors?

What OS/version are you using? 64 or 32bit?
I want to power two of these boards in one case, at first one will run 3x 8347he and one will run one 8437he then I will move that over when I have decided which processor I will go with for the second set. I can get the 8350's for 58 bucks, and the 8354's for 65 bucks each new from pricewatch, however I'll probably go with what I can afford from eBay and the completion costs later on.
all 8 cpu's will be water-cooled through one modified heater-core I got ready as well as maybe a cheap rad or two. Yes I know ghetto, but heck and a aqua-extreme z50 pump I have laying around, now the question is how much power will I need to power the following:
4 8347 he + one arima and one HD and one cheapo video card maybe an x800 +
One arima + 4 cpu's which could be the 8354's or 8360's if I can find some cheap, plus one usb flash drive
+ the aquaextreme z50 and four cheap 140 mm fans
What power supply will do this job :) or will I need two PSU's?:shrug:

Ya, they were crunching away. I came home from work for a second and they had Computation Error on about 386 WUs...I told them to update then left them alone. I came home just now and they are both crunching away. One was only crunching 9 WUs at a time, I updated it again to upload the ones that it completed this afternoon and it pulled down more. Weird anomaly. Just thought I'd post here just in case others had seen the same thing.
Make sure you take note of what units error'd out in case it happens again. It might help diagnose the issue.

AGESA is a special block of code, additional to CPU microcode, that is used to initialize post-Barcelona CPUs. If your guy can figure out a way to insert a newer version of AGESA, then I can provide one that is compatible with Shanghai. Myself and some much more clever people over at Rebel's Haven Forums have thus far failed trying to update the AGESA in any BIOS, however...

I looked at what you said and I was thinking how would that work since in order to support that you would need some power thing to go on as well, if I remember correctly, unless the chipset used could support it, i.e. the nvidia mcp 55 supports shanghai on other boards (btw that's where you should be looking) in some fashion I find it unlikely to be possible.
But maybe just maybe this bios can be modded to be acpi compliant maybe even in such a clean way that windows 2008 will work as well as a darwin based , that is with a patched kernel though.
Can one of you guys in ubuntu extract the dsdt.dst(decompiled) or the dsdt.aml (machine code) from this board, maybe it will give me and my friends some hints what is wrong with the acpi table in the bios. I don't have my boards yet and the procs I won in the giveaway are probably two weeks to a month off since there coming from japan, So can you guys extract the DSDT.aml and I'll look though it and with a little help from my friends maybe we can find the bugs that are causing the :bsod: (BSOD).

DDPM (split power planes) is required for Istanbul, but not Shanghai. The only limiting factor is microcode and AGESA, and AGESA is a binary blob provided by AMD that does not vary between boards (for the same version).. It does all the intialization magic including, I guess, therefore, detecting and enabling DDPM support if it is there. Nothing to do with 'chipset' - remember mcp55 is little more than a southbridge.
We can extract AGESA from one board's BIOS and insert it into another, but so far we have been unsuccessful in getting the new BIOS to go with the change. Forgive me for my cloudiness as it has been at least a year since I was working on this.
You may also want to speak to the Coreboot guys - they wrote, from scratch, their own initialization code for quad-cores - I assume because AGESA didn't meet their license criteria.
I am unsure how much things vary between EFI and BIOS but donating a board to Coreboot developers to get them to add support may be a way to get ACPI support, if hacking the current BIOS is unsuccessful.

Okies figured out two problems why peeps cannot load windows 2008 server!
#1 no 64 bit math support in the dsdt (acpi) table
#2 the highest windows OS supported in this bios is windows 2000.1 (I think that is the server version (32 bit albeit)
When they made this EFI they totally screwed-up and just pasted and scratched together what they could find, I suspect sparky you'll be able to load windows 2k server on this thing, however you may run into some problems unless you can find and load windows 2000 nvidia sata drivers (if there is an option to set it to ide in the bios you may be successful without having to load drivers otherwise you'll have to find some generic nForce drivers.
Dun even bother trying with raid those drivers are notoriously buggy for win 2k/xp I crashed a recent system based on an ion platform after only a month of usage and gave up and went to darwin on the atom 330 board.
Someone please try to load win 2k server and try ide mode first on sata before angering yourself with f6 and buggy nforce ahci or sata drivers.
this is based on the 10 version of the bios I just started analysing the dsdt.dsl

It's abandoned now you can still find it on torrent sites as part of windows 2000 4in1 that contains windows 2000 server and advanced server, however I don't know if windows 2000 server supports efi however sp4 might, neither does windows millenium but it's listed in the dsdt, so that dsdt is a total cut and paste job, no wonder they went belly up :S

BTW what methods did you try with newer versions? tried the usb flash drive install method? what settings did you have for the HD? did you even try ide mode? that might be the mode to work with on boards with these kind of problems.

Windows 2000 Advanced Server Limited Edition and Datacenter Server Limited Edition support EFI 1.10, but they're designed for Itanium, so I'm not sure whether they will work on these boards.
ehh what memory sticks have you guys had success with, I just need to know which ones to pick as cheap as possible, memory speed should not have much effect on the ppd with these things, so I just need to know what I am looking for exactly

I'm running some ECC registered DDR2-400 (PC2-3200). 4x2GB sticks. All in the CPU0 memory slots.
i know this will sound pretty nooooooobie of me but i want to make sure i got it right before i start the board up for the first time...
step 1: plug in power, video card, ram, and cpu0 -> check for post
step 2: add cpu1 -> check for post
step 3: add cpu2 -> check for post
step 4: add cpu3 -> check for post
step 5: add sata HDD, sata dvd, install linux
step 6: ???
step 7: profit!

I just did it all at once: put in CPUs, RAM, attach water blocks and finish loop, attach power, hard drive, optical drive, power on, screw around with trying to get Windows to work, give up, install Linux and call it a day :p:

Rise, make sure and pay close attention to the first post in this thread. I think the first boot is with the DVD drive on SATA20 [over by video card] and the hard drive can be plugged in anywhere else. Set your BIOS to boot from the DVD drive [it'll save time in waiting for PXE booting...] Then once the OS installs and wants to reboot, remove the power once it's in the BIOS POST portion and swap the hard drive over to SATA 20. DVD drive anywhere or disconnected. Go into the BIOS and make the hard drive your first bootable.
I have one stupid question for all of you, I keep reading and the one thing I see about you guys trying to install windows is that you seem to have a problem with acpi dvd boot support, any of you try to install windows 2008 or windows 2003 server, with a usb drive? there is a way to make a usb flash drive bootable it works with windows vista and 7 and with some hack with xp, so why can't you do that with windows 2003, or 2008 server?
and after that if the board lacks proper usb booting support you could always clone the usb drive onto a small hard drive. I just thought of that when I was reading this thread again.
well I'll have my board on the 3rd of january and let's see if the odds and ends end up coming at about the same time.
I'm curious because I am thinking that would be soo cool if we could get windows or even darwin (yeah I'm a hack fan boi) to work on this board :p

Never tried that. I never even tried installing Windows. I've heard that Linux is more efficient so I went with it. I have very little Linux knowledge and I was able to get up and running with the help of this AWESOME guide and a little Googling [because I went with Ubuntu Server 10.10 x64].
I come from a windows background [13 years IT exp!] but Linux has come a long way. I'm actually getting ready to move my work laptop over to Ubuntu exclusively. :up:

yeah but with 2008 it's tricky, you have to do it from a computer with vista or windows 7 and you need to transfer the nt60 block from the dvd, any other way to make it boot will kill the install, and you have to clean the partition table from with 7 or win vista command-line it will not work from win xp

Now just another favor can someone photograph a closeup of the 8 sata connectors make it a little wider but macro it and well also the bios chip we'll be in business in no time. There are so many ways to flash those chips and some of em are so cheap it's not even funny. I seem to remember about using a intel lan card to flash those chips:rofl::ROTF:, there are some other methods as well.

rintamarotta claimed he got the windows installer to load sucessfully but ran into some driver issues, he also said he did not have the obey thing going on, So now we just need to contact him somehow, I tried pm'ing him but no dice, maybe someone knows him, or someone else that has a decent version of the firmware :), or maybe a mod can e-mail him and see if he's willing to back-up the rom on that board.

Hi and Happy New Year to all XS community.
To make thing more "easy" looks like it is 2 revision of this board. Our boards from USA (yes I already have one) are blue PBC revision: 41-CMG020-D00G others are green and PBC revision: 41-CMG020-D01G. I think "rintamarotta" have newer (green) revision. Maybe HP was setting this newer ones for different customer? (yes HP was OEM supplier for Google).
Now I gotta say the boards should be identical in hardware right? if they are as long as we can get our hands on the (firmware/bios/efi) we should be able to at least test it and maybe just maybe load darwin :p

as of right now I have 2x512 pc3200 ECC REG HYS72T64001HR-5-A and one 1gb corsair PC2-5300-555 EEC REG that one 1 gb stick was an accidental buy that's been laying in my drawer for like 6 months, it was an auction where they said desktop memory and it wasn't worth sending back.
Question does this board require matching pairs to boot, or is that just necessary for dual channel?
I can always test these but I was wondering what else I should put on my shopping list
I'm still waiting for the eps adapters from hong-kong sad to say so right now it's a waiting game, cause my two arima F-3000 boards will be coming tonight, and well over the next few days all the other supplies I need should be trickling in, i.e. the tap and barbs for the bonnie heater-core, and a few other items, but one thing I have not figured out yet is what the heck I'm gonna put it in :S, I could build a sheet-metal case, or I could go with wood or plastic, catch is with plastic finding enough scrap plastic, With sheet finding the lowest price. Plastic that is sturdy enough sad to say is more expensive than aluminum these days. And well while wood looks nice and is easy to work with, it's expensive, wood really has gotten crazy even the cheap press kind go figure
Anyways any input on the memory issue would be appreciated.

Not sure if the memory needs to be in pairs or not... I'm running a mixed pair, matching specs but two different brands (Hynix and Samsung). I have one spare Hynix 2GB ECC reg PC2-3200 stick here if anyone needs one of those.

the more memory the merrier, well right now I got like those 3 stick I'd like to put them in one board if it's possible, like to run at least 2 gb of mem each board cause that is like the optimum for some projects (more a little better less a whole lot worse)

Most of the quads are TLB affected steppings, though... Around 50usd seems to be the going rate when they come up (I saw a few earlier yesterday, when I was considering upgrade options for the CPUs XD). RW-Everything every bootup resolves that for me. No issues so far after about 3 months of use.
TLB bug, affects B1 and B2 stepping Barcelonas (and Phenom I CPU). It's a cache accell lookup table that was incorrect in some way. It would cause systems to hang upon error. So AMD had a quick fix by disabling the TLB (l2/l3 cache lookup?) via the BIOS for B1 and B2 stepping. B3 stepping fixed this, and was not disabled.
Unfortuneately, disabling TLB tanks L2/L3 cache performance, and some apps that were memory heavy (and by relation, cache heavy) saw a sizeable performance hit. So to resolve this, a few users on XS and other forums found ways to disable the "TLB BIOS fix" that AMD used to turn off the buggy TLB B1/B2 CPU. Vista SP1 and onwards forced the same fix via the OS. Linux Kernal 2.6xx-something had another workaround that didn't cause as much of a performance deficit as disablign the TLB, while still being safe from any possibility of a system hang.
The easiest way around the TLB BIOS patch for Windows (Vista SP1 & +) users, was a peice of software called RW-Everything that could access the BIOS/CPU MSR, and disable the TLB fix, live (realtime). And RW-Everything supports external batch operations (can use a saved list of MSR commands :)), so it's the easiest to deal with. Since two MSR commands have to be done (well, 4) for ever core. And for 16 cores... that's a lot of typing :p

I do not think AMD's patch ever made it into the mainline kernel. No biggie, though, I doubt you'll have any problems even with the bug exposed - it only cropped up on certain virtualization workloads, iirc. And you'll be without the ~1% performance deficit - it all adds up :D
Yeah TLB only ever affected stuff with virtualization. I had a TLB-affected Phenom CPU a while back, my brother has one now, and neither I nor he have ever ran into issues with the TLB bug. He runs Windows 7, does video encoding, no problems.
And of course my Arima has TLB bugged CPUs but no issues with that either.

And that was with the TLB left on, since I forgot to remove it at boot... :(
I had a bad experience with changing the MSR under load, so I simply don't do it unless if the slate is clean...
As you guys might remember I got 4x8347he during the giveaway, now for the second board I just bought 4 8346he's made an offer for 25 bucks (total of 100 for 4) each, then after he made a counteroffer of 37.50 each (150), I offered 30 bucks each, so well I just got 4 cpu's for 120 bucks :)
They have the bug but I won't be doing virtualization, I told him about the bug and well I also advertised that these cpu's will be used for a good cause i.e. computing under distributed computing for research and well he took my offer of 120 bucks :):yepp::yepp::yepp:
originally I wanted to put like 54's or something in the second board, but heck this will save some electricity and well overall for the 54's I would have spent (piece meal) one at a time 65 bucks each, now hmmm I saved $140, albeit now I gotta figure out what I'm gonna sell to make-up for that, or I need to repair a few more computers :), well clients are few and far in-between even in Los angeles with the economy the way it is. LOL heat down :rofl: this monster is going to be water-cooled with TC-4 bottoms and well tops from Myself (black thick plexi, threaded (g1/4 and barbs from mc-carr master :p) I'm going to use brass bspt 3/8 barbs there like 13 bucks plus shipping and tax for 10, of course I need to add my own o-rings, it's kinda wierd but it works. 8 cpu's 4x 8347he + 4x 8346he one aquaextremez-50 pump and well add to that one bonnie rad, this is nuts but it will work.

well if you can fabricate all that wc stuff i'm sure you can build yourself a simple metal box with standoffs, an i/o back, and whatever else
Yes I can :yepp::yepp::yepp::rofl:, however folding sheet-metal is a pita, remember I'm making plexi tops that's easy, just cut, drill holes tap the g1/4 in the plexi and the 4mm in the tc-4 block (I have those handy whatever the original thread is I :shrug:) make it work, but sheet-metal folding always carries the risk of tearing unless you heat the folds and that's the biggest pain right there, also the thicker the sheet metal is the stabler it will be, but a frame would be better, that means riviting or welding, which adds to the cost. As for standoff's the catch with that is that you either need to use thicker backing prepunch and I dun have the punching materials.

But honestly I overextended myself financially, besides the arima boards which I bought with my x-mas money I bought another MB and a bunch of other things like HSS g1/4 taps (the ones I have are carbon steel HSS is better :D) memory for 1 of the arima's the cpu's for second arima etc. so I think I will have no money left after bills.

I put my TYAN into a cheap HAF 932 (used) case. Maybe the Arima can fit, too? I didn't do enough research into that sector...
Surely you can just get a bit of alu, punch out mounting holes and holes for IO ports, and bend it into an L shape. Might need a corner brace depending on the thickness of aluminium used. Stand offs can simply be attached with nuts.

To answer you all, yes i my board is Green, i havent been just in while in this forum, have had lots of work in my server farm where i host some gaming servers, 13 machines running and 8 left to setup.
Arima is atm running rock solid in Linux as Gaming Server, windows just were too buggy at end and sometimes giving BSOD's.
Ill throw DSDT.aml / DSDT.dsl dump's when i have time, also in next maintenance cycle i try to dump bios for you people if i have time and everything is going well in other parts of my server farm.

Really nice!! :D I thought you had a daughterboard for a split second there, lol. One question, are the 1207 mount holes the correct distance for the AM2 HSF conversion brackets? IIRC, there are two 1207 mount hole location types, and one of them is capable of being easily converted into an AM2 mount (like my TYAN board).

Also mountable in both orientations, but they appear not to have open fins at the side, so the 90mm varient wouldn't fit on these boards anyway. :(

Just remember to not go overboard on cooling these. The cpus don't run all that hot. A decent 92mm heatsink should be just fine.
Question on backplates? what is the thread of those backplates, Imma building water-blocks for the things right now And I could use that knowledge before I go trying out a bunch of screws, cool setup btw, my plan is a little different though same backplate for both arimas just flipped, use a steel door from old computer case it's 18x 16 or something like that so big enough :)
