alot of those questions are in this thread already but rest assured it will be more than worth the price. some of us will be not be putting it into a case because 1. it's huge 2. it cuts down cost. Don't be afraid of it being a server board, there are others that already have this set up and running so the info is there and when the time comes we'll all get it up and running no prob.
i'm in for one board to help all you guys! :cool:

i know that we have a way to power the board via a normal single rail PSU, so thats not a problem.
i wont be buying this, as i think it is too expensive, eventhough its a good deal. i was hopeing that the PSU that fits this board would be cheaper.
do anyone know if windows server 2008 will work on this board? i have access to the "en_windows_server_2008_datacenter_enterprise_stan dard_x64" via my school, and i dont realy like linux :)
these boards are PCI-E and PCI, so...PCI
another guy over on HWC built a techstation for a tyan SSI-MEB (same board I have the intentions of getting), I think his parts cost for his "case" was about 40 bucks for plywood, spacers, some scrap steel, and some angle alu

There's quite a few of us that are using Ubuntu based systems. All you have to do is ask. ;)
Ubuntu setup is very easy, you don't even have to go to a website.

I've tried KDE, Gnome and XFCE versions of Ubuntu (you can have all three desktop environments installed on one system and switch between them if you want to) and have pretty much settled on Gnome, but others have varying opinions. That's fine. There are more desktops than just those three if anyone wants to look, but those are the ones Ubuntu can come with pre-setup.
That's the beauty of Linux (or one of the things), you're not tied to a particular desktop environment. In fact, the desktop is really an application running on top of the Operating System, not an inseparable part of it. If you don't like your desktop, just pick another one and change.

Hi guys, just to help you out a little, here is a search that I use to hunt for cheap (eg. advertised in the wrong category, etc.) registered ECC DDR2 memory on eBay -
(pc2*,ddr2*,6400,5300,pc6400,pc5300) (ecc,reg*) -(non*,full*,fb*,pc2100*,pc2700*,pc233,pc266)
If you're wondering why I search for ECC or reg*, it's because I prefer to get a few false positives than to miss out on a deal because someone listed ECC reg. as plain ECC, which often happens. The search will unfortunately turn up a few FB-DIMMs aswell, even though I've tried to get rid of as many as I can, as you can see. Let me know if it works out for you!

adding up a bit ( sorry but I am way too tired and my way of writing is not very neat) : my lappie had the cable that goes from the PSU to the power jacket short circuited.. my main rig as mentioned before has the VGA FUBAR and parents rig is undergoing an upgrade ( I will be having 4 active cores by this week :) )

So, the socket 754 bracket doesn't seem to clear the F socket itself. The holes for backplate are there and spaced correctly, the plastic bracket just won't settle in solidly. I have at least one socket 940 cooler that will work but I'd prefer to use my much quieter AM2 coolers, ideas? I might just need to jiggle it some more....

4gigs, was that $25 dollar deal. This board is easy mode, it even fits and has proper screw holes to go into an old Chieftec Dragon case I had laying around. CPUs are still inbound so don't know what all works yet so fingers crossed.
Board was $70 shipped off ebay, sold as new and came in the original box.
so when the description says:

does that mean 2000 series dual core and 2000 series quad core or 2000 series dual core and any series quad core?
Should be the same CPUs as the quad board we want.

Just a heads up if you get any problems - people here reported stability sometimes (only on your particular board) when those 4 screws you removed weren't tightened, for some reason. Of course, there's no way you can tighten them now! Hopefully it should work fine for you though.Quote:

After checking that out some more, the bolts through the back plate mehtod doesn't look hard at all. Just have to hit the hardware store to get something the right size and drill a few holes.
wait why are you drilling holes and leaving out screws and this and that? i thought this was a straight forward install of retention -> heatsink..
The board comes with 4.1" backplates held on by 4 screws. Those 4 screws also lock down the metal frame of the CPU socket. You have to remove the screws to put in the 754/939 brackets. My plan is to replace the screws with some nuts/bolts threaded through the 754/939 back plate.Quote:
