Just another sleepless night to get me to join this club. My chip needs lot of voltage to get it stable but well, my temps are ok so I guess that's all matter.

That's because Linpack is the only multi-threaded application that actually get worst results with more cores.

That explains also why AMD can turn more Gflops then Intel on the same speeds, but with less efficiency of course.

I think you lose up to 10 GFlops or so with Nehalem... But with Gulftown it's a ton more it seems, lol.

That's really exotic batch#, and I haven't seen any of them in real 24/7 action yet. It is really interesting to see how good they are.
This B-batch seams really promising for now. Have you seen any good F-batch 24/7 results?.

Well, imo... 1.45V should be totally safe, 1.5V should be safe also. I wouldn't use more than that 24/7.
For benching just watch your temps I guess... Voltage should be irrelevant.

Vi don't have much data on how much 24/7-torture these can take, yet. You are our laboratory rabbit, you know. ;)

What we know, Intel is recommending max 1.4v for these 32nm CPUs. Compare this to the 1.55v for 45nm, and you are running a ~1.6v relatively. It is interesting to see how long it can run without degradation. ;)

So, these 32nm may be as good as 45nm at taking torture for 24/7, and I really hope they do, but we don't know it yet.

Intel is increasing the max VVT from 1.35v to 1.4v, but decreasing the max vCore from 1.55v to 1.4v. So it is really interesting to see how much of a joke this new vCore is and how much these 32nm can take for 24/7.

Pretty sure Intel is playing it safe in any case.
And the reduction of vCore is due to the new tech process, vCore keeps decreasing as transistors get smaller and smaller.

I have not dealt with returning CPU's to Tigerdirect but I have returned a 920 to Compusa whom they own. I bought a 920 that took way to much vcore to hardly hit 4.2GHz, brought it back to Compusa and they let me swap it for a new one without asking a single question.

I suspect the retailers don't care because they return them to Intel and probably charge back Intel for the full cost. Intel probably test the chips and sells the working ones to OEM's in batches.

Thanks SteveRo, I'm running on normal watercooling no cold water applied.
Yeah the gflops looks broken here to, did a run without HT and got 94.xx gflops.

Not linx stable but almost as good - pcmark vantage stable at 4.75 but I needed 1.5 vcore to do it. -

I actually returned a 975 to them not to long ago and the staff were all pissed and claiming that the Classified board was my problem, end result: they took it and credited the cc for a full refund.

You got more guts than I taking your 980x pass 1.50v :shocked: , I can't do it.

I really feel like I'm in un-chartered waters with vcore.
UD7 mobo with ht off -
bios F4, qpi is 36x - 5.76ghz (2880mhz in cpuz)
dominator GT 3x2GB @ 8x - 1280 9-9-9 1T
bios uncore @ 17x 2720mhz

OCing the Uncore seams to be a whole new world on these chips.

The RAM and L3 performance is not good on this chip, (at least compared to good old 920), the read/write is down, and latencies is up. The Uncore seams to need a really good OC to follow the core, but (and it is a big butt :slapass: ) it is not easy to OC the Uncore with this HUGE 12M Cache (which is really slow with high latencies, relatively), without too much VVT.

I don't see anybody pushing the Uncore on these chips yet, but judging based on the locked x20 Uncore on my X5650, these chips may really need a highly OCed Uncore to perform at peak. Anybody has done any tests to share?

I can't recall seeing one, wonder why it handles HT so strangely.

I imagine you could get there with that chip, just give it moar uncore mhz and tighten your TRCD and timings a bit :up:

Maybe not 20 pass stable but I usually hit my best Gflops around pass 3 or 4 anyway.

Yep, 1.6 is what I was thinking.
Also yes - I was thinking of DICE also - i would need to go find a pot.

I had a feser quad in the loop for a time - it just heated up the subambient water.

What I'm suggesting is something not requiring a pot, though. No rads, just your chillers (or could do without), pumps and some DICE in a big water res.

Sort of, yep. Just a big water res with some DICE floating there, + tubing, + pump(s). Rads don't help as they actually heat the water up. No idea about chillers, though.

If you want to do just a quick bench to take back your WR, why not try a large ice bath? Fill a 5 gallon pail w/ ice water and pump it through your system. Although you would still need do some insulating.

I will try first with just the 2x boreas - if that doesn't cut it I'll insulate and try the bucket of ice then the bucket/dry ice. If that doesn't work I'll buy a plane ticket and take everything to lowfat for SS! Just kidding on that last part!

The Corsair team have the advantage of unlimited number SSD, but you have the advantage of OCing the PCIe on your UD7.

Push the PCIe, and chill your CPU as suggested above, then go gete'm.

Last night - I did try to up the oc to 4.95 - went all the way to 1.63vcore.
I could boot into windows @ 4.95 but I was not even close to being stable for vantage.
Cpuz was showing 1.66v which was rather alarming - perhaps due to load line calibration set to level 2 (Gigabyte's name for vdroop compensation).
Temperatures at idle were actually not bad - high 20's to low 30's.
I suspect deep subzero is needed but I may yet try an ice or a dry ice reservoir.

Really nice work. Same batch CPU as mine. If yours is anything like mine it's insanely hot, so you have done remarkably well to keep it as cool as you have at those clocks and vcore.

I read about your geothermal loop, it's about as extreme as it gets :up:

Cascades basically consists of cooling the condenser of one system with another system.
There are 3 kinds of cascades
Autocascade
Cascade
Triple stage Cascade

Autocascade – Can Get you down to about -80
Double Stage Cascade – Can get you down to about -100
Triple Stage Cascade – Can get you to -120 often even colder still.

As I say I know little about cascades but will update when I get some more reading done. But can say now they ain’t cheap.

Something is weird here.. LinX doesn't seem to like my X5680. I always get an error after exatly 3 minutes of runtime, no matter the clocks & volts - even at stock lol.
I am primestable at 4,5Ghz with ~1,375V Vcore, BOINC Gaming etc is stable as well.
So it stands to reason that LinX has some kind of quarry with my chip? It has been very buggy on all hexas to begin with :shrug:

Try without "All" memory setting, mine does that sometimes.

I can usually tell when it will happen since I get a "Windows Media Player has stopped working" error about 30 seconds before :rofl:

Had another rethink about my settings and have managed to get another submission, although my temps and Vcore are now contributing to climate change. :rolleyes:

newhit - yeh, that's getting up there - good run! probably need to upgrade your cooling before you go any further.
I did this with an i7 965 - don't worry - the proc's temp self protection kicks in around 100 - maybe its 101.
Of course yu know to only do this for benching - don't run it 24/7 at these t's it will limit the life.

Cheers Steve. I was thinking about a chiller but then cost v perf started to bite. I have reasionable Vcore and HT on at 4.5 for everyday use.

Chiller's are better than water but most - mine included are only marginally better not a huge difference then standard water cooling.
For most xtreme types water cooling is as far as they will go.
Phase change cooling both single stage (SS) and cascade (multi stage phase change) is the next level up.
Lowfat is waiting on cascade to be finished - he is currently on a SS.
I'm a step behind him, I'm getting a SS made for me by sdumper.
Others who have this unit say the SS will hold an overvolted i7 at -40C (300W load).
I expect to take my 980x to 5+ghz and hopefully get competitive at pcmark vantage again.

Water cooled.

Batch 3003b396, it seems to need more voltage than other batches for 4.5, 4.5 24/7 might not be in my cards.

BUT, I wanted to go to sleep last night so I made the mistake of increasing 3 voltages at once, now I will have to start over to figure out what finally made linx stable.

At least I'm finally in the club!

Even then, check the OP :up: Yours isn't any worse than the ones listed (I'm aware there are some batches un-represented that are taking less to do 4.5 24/7)

You shouldn't need anything above stock IOH Core for those settings, not doing any harm at 1.28v but probably be perfectly stable at 1.1v.
