Just because Microcenter sells the i7 for $200 doesn't mean that everyone else does. And once the i3 and i5 come out in September say goodbye to the i7 920. Sure the 955 costs that much now, but only because it's AMD's flagship processor. And my 550 is basically a 955 with a weaker IMC, and cost half.

With the 965 coming out it could even be a better overclocker than the 955, and should be a drop-in upgrade for many AM2/AM2+ users (as with all of AMD's AM3 processors). Can't say the same about the i7 if you have a LGA-775 system.

Problem with SMBus controller. Under MA790X-UD4P BIOS, I get SMBus cntrlr IRQ NA, but device manager doesn't show any problems. Don't find any AMD SMBus drivers for Vista nor at Gigabyte drivers package, nor at AMD game.com

Dunno if this has come up yet, but using F6A BIOS on MA790X-UD4P I found that Memtest86+ v2.11 shows my proccy to be an A64 3.1GHz, no L3, DDR1, 6-7-6 (or something way wrong) for timings.... yeah, it's just all wrong. Went to see why it was doing that and I got some sort of SMBus controller error or not found message. I have absolutely no idea what this means, and I didn't try Memtest on F5 before flashing. All I know is it was effing weird.

Can try to nab some screenies and revert to F5 after work if it helps.

I'm on the f6a. The fastest my XMS2 800 ram has been ever been reported to go from everywhere I can find to search is 922 5-5-5-18. I've never been able to hit 922 personally on any MB I have owned and this ram. On the f6a though, memtest passes at 940 but fails at 941. What might be more interesting is that this same ram will run at 800-4-4-4-15 and has on my other boards fine, memtest passes on the f6a at 800 4-4-4, but it fails at 801. Bottom line for me is that f6a seems to favor higher clocks than tighter timings.

Hmm ,Thats the SB driver i use .
It installs the ATI/AMD PCI IDE driver and ATI SATA driver package..
I believe it also updates the SMbus when it installs too.

I can't say, that I have problems with my board:) It's only a bit strange, that BIOS shows SMBus IRQ at NA. Maybe I should ask technical Gigabyte service about it.
Memtest86+ can't detect correct RAM speed/latency settings. It's program related problem, not BIOS.
After updating to F6a BIOS I manage to find a new AMD C1E support option under advanced BIOS settings. Don't know what it does.

You dont need the Raid driver if not using raid..


AHCI mode Make shure you Set the Bios to AHCI before Installing Vista or Windows (Fresh Install only)...

Vista is already installed and you are in Regular SATA mode,,
You Must change the Vista Driver to AHCI before you change the BIos setting to AHCI.

If yo get a AHCI error@ boot or cant find drive "shows no drive or AHCI support" its because the Windows/Vista driver was not enabled in OS before you set your Bios.

Also You do want to have the Lan driver installed...

** Do not update the Lan driver through windows update.**
Update will install a incorrect version and disable the LAN..

Use the Lan Driver from Gigabytes site or use the one off the CD.

i'm struggling with this board in the following setup: everything is new since friday:
GA-MA790XT-UD4P
sapphire 4890 vapor-x
4 gb dd3-ram (kingston value)
X4 945
corsair hx650 power supply

what happens is that after pressing the start button everything seems to power up but my monitor (tried 2 different ones on different cables and connectors) doens't get a video signal but everything seems to be running (graphics card lights and fan are running, cpu fan is running)
i've rechecked all the cables, the radeon has the two power cables properly connected; i've tried another video card (same thing) and have tried the 4890 in my old computer and there it works flawlessly so i have ruled out the graphics card
i've also mixed and move the 2 ramsticks around, tried it with one, ... so i don't think it's the ram either

so it's down to either the mobo, the cpu or the ram; cpu is seated properly (haven't got another one to test...) and so is the ram
the boards gives no beeps whatsoever at startup so i can't really diagnose what's wrong ...

any ideas? Could it be a bios-problem in that it doesn't support the cpu ? i don't have another one to flash it either :(
if this is the problem, is the only option to send it back to the supplier and ask them to flash it?

I've had possibly the same problem as described or just very similar.

Are there diagnostic LED lights on the 4890? If there are and lit like [X][ ][X][X], that means there is something preventing the graphics card from displaying according to MSI. The mobo also produced one long beep.

I ended up RMA'ing it although the problem wasn't because of quality control. Lightening stuck the utilities pole across the street. Fried my modem, took mercy on my router and fried my LAN jack. Inspection of the mobo revealed a small dot of melted plastic on the ethernet chip. I tried installing a NIC afterward but that just killed the system :shrug:

Lightening also killed one of the LAN jacks on another computer (luckily it had two jacks).

well, nevermind, it turned out to be one of the pins on the cpu that got bended during install ... I feel silly since I have installed at least 15 other systems before; it was bound to happen :-) i've reinstalled everything and now it works like a charm!

I have 790x-ud4p with a brisbane and I also get memory speed increase with f6a bios.

I have cold boot post error with 1.35v and 1.45v cpu. I haven't tried 1.25v or 1.55v. Maybe this is just brisbane specific bug?

1.25v errors as well while 1.55v successfully booted.

I haven't had much luck below 1.55 either and even at 1.6, I don't gain any speed.

1: Once in a while does the games (only installed Crysis and Cod waw) loose connection with the graphic card (as told by ATI pop up). Tweaked or not tweaked - the same problem... Any ideas? I'm going to reinstall everything just in case.

3: I'm not sure about which drivers to use for the non AMD satas (Jmicron 36X chip). The cd got 1.17.43 but Jmicrons site got several vesions all the way up to 1.17.50. The problem is, that they have normal(?), no eSATA, eSATA, and eSATA with Write Cache Disabled versions. Which one do you use? eSATA is controlled by the Jmicron chip, not the 790X, isn't it? AMD or Jmicron chip control IDE dinosaurs?

Just updated. Finally CPU NBVID shows the actual voltage and i see that theres a new option called " AMD C1E Support"

Flashed to f6, no issues or performance increases on core or ram, but they "may" have fixed the NB multiplier. I have never been able to get this board to post above 2600 nb, now I'm a little over it at 2688.

i have been out of the oc-realm for a while and have read up on it yesterday and i know the basics of phenom II oc'ing; last night i started with 3600mhz (stock 3000) and it ran stable for 8h (prime95 with 4 cores running) which is not bad as a start
these were the settings i used / changed from stock settings:

15x240 = 3600
9x NB = 2250
9x HT = 2250
PCIE = 100
memory at 3/8 (so running just a little below spec @ 1280)
ram @ 7-7-7-20-27-2T (auto)
NB voltage = +0,1 (1,2 total)
SB voltage = unchanged
CPU NB VID = +0,075 (1,2750) (not quite sure what this does though)
CPU voltage = +0,150 (1,4)
cpu temp in de gigabyte monitor were around 53° (case 42°) at full load
idle temps = 39 / 43

any remarks or advice? I want to get good overall and stable performance (not that into benchmarking), especially for gaming. How can i push this a little higher ? What settings are too high / low or don't really matter. I'm ultimately aiming at 4ghz if possible but will sacrifice some mhz for absolute stability and silence :-)

It's now running at all the same settings as above but with 15x250 = 3750 but according to my gf, it has stopped rather quickly ... see below for screenshot of those settings (when still at idle)

Make sure your RAM timings are running at the OEM specs. And bump CPU NB VID and Vcore a bit - should stabilize things. I'm thinking +0.100V for NB and +0.250V for CPU.

haven't really paid much attention to the ram (was running auto) but i now only see the ram is running at 7-7-7-20 where specs are 9-9-9-24 (for 1333)
i'm guessing the performance difference between the two isn't that big and that the latter will be heaps more stable?
Also, the ram voltage is at 1,6 (on auto) so i'll lower that to 1.5 as well

Not especially. I'd just advise not jumping straight into high overclocks - work your way up slowly. Try finding your FSB max and at which points it will need more voltage to the NB chip (not the same as CPU NB). To do this, drop your CPU multi and RAM speed to below stock so that when you raise your FSB, neither of those two things will be responsible for causing instability. Isolate the one thing you're testing so that you know what's causing your system to crash.

Once you've got your FSB all figured out, then you can try messing with memory and CPU separately. When working on the memory, I'd advise trying to get the tightest timings you can as opposed to higher clock frequencies. Do this at your max CPU overclock.

thanks, you're absolutely right and that's also my normal approach, unfortunately right now, I haven't got much time to invest into this so i'm looking for a temporay quick and dirty overclock :-) , come september, i'll really venture into getting the best performance out of this baby; right now i'm already aiming for a 90% performance without "too much" of a hassle ;-)

Yeah Gigabyte is cranking em out...

I just loaded the F7 for 790X-UD4P and it Rocks..
F6A/F6 it seemed slow in comparison especially response at loading apps ..at the same settings.

I decided to flash with my OC enabled so i was shure i flashed @ the Same speed as Older Bios .. F7 really speeded this chip up..Even with low NB @ 2400+ my Everest is faster now with just under 1195ram instead of 1200mhz.. 1066divider works a treat still too...

They are really tweaking these Bioses good for the New Chips,,it shows indeed..We just need Ram drive strenths ADDed and well be set.

Have you tried a Lower Ram divider and lowering your HT to 9x or 8x:yepp:

If your chip is buggy in X4mode it usually wont like High HTT because of the IMC and 8gigs..


720's unlocked are hard to get up past the 3.7ghz barrier..Especially with lots of ram...Great cooling is a must with those..But think you have more left..Its just being Finicky

Ok , now I need to order more stuff for my reeftank..

I have to admit this is a very solid board. I have had VERY bad luck in the past with GB, mostly at the bios level and was hesitant to try another. I took out a perfectly stable M3a78 780g board to see if I could unlock my 4th core with the ud4p. Not only did this board unlock it, it's every bit as stable and possibly more. I think I've thrown every conceivable bios setting at this thing in the last week and after clearing CMOS, countless BSOD and no posts, it bounces right back good as new. Stability wise it reminds me of my never EVER die volt modded Abit Nf7-s.

The UD4p did get me a higher clock than the M3a78 but then I had the crippled bios (EM) version and only 1.45 vcore. I could do 3.6 there and 3.7 on the ud4p, the difference is not the board but vcore limit of the em.

What surprised me was how high I could get my ram on this board vs my Asus. I was at 833 5-5-5 on my m3a78-em, and this board does 940 with the exact same ram and settings and voltages. It was also interesting that I could do 800 at 4-4-4 but not 801 at 4-4-4 on either board, making me think GB is going for bandwidth not tight timings.

Anyway and after all that, I have to say I'm pleased and I think the reason I can't get past 3.7 is most likely a limitation of my CPU and ram and not this board. I didn't think I was going to say that when I bought the ud4p but the so far, it has been a very nice surprise.

Thats confirmed, on f6 i was getting page fault bsod's on win32k.sys on stock memory settings, with a .1 v bump..! Switch to f7, prime stable 5 hours, occt 2 so far so good :) and lower voltages across the board, down one notch for pretty much everything.

You can try bumping the NB up to 11x for it to be 2750MHz.

Still having an issue getting my NB to 2600.

there is no 11x for the NB ;-) so upping the fsb and lowering the multi is my only way to get a higher NB-speed
i'm fiddling with other settings (eg 14x268=also 3750 and 10x NB=2680) but can't get it stable yet... maybe i'll need the 1.3 v on NB ? i'm putting HT at 9x

also if i push my NB and/or cpu too high (still have to figure out which), one of the 4 cores craps out in prime95 after a few seconds while the rest seems to be going on ... is this normal ?

Yeah, one of the cores may be weaker than the others...which will probably be the deciding factor in your overclock. If I push my CPU too far, it's almost always Core #1 that fails.

yes, i thought it was always core 4 that failed on me, i'll try the ACC-thingy...
anyway, i'm still pretty happy with my 3 --> 3.75 ghz overclock (not as good as the E6600 running at 3600mhz percentage-wise though :-))

The built in network card have just did on my 790xt-ud4p i think... Had it running vista and after i got back home i wasnt connected to the internet anymore. Tried reinstalling drivers but it wont even detect the network card and tells me to insert it and try again -.- Any solution to this except a rma? Also reinstalled with XP and the same problem..

Try unplug lan cable and plug it back in..Sometimes vista can drop the lan,, Especialy if Auto detect is used on Lan for the internet lan detection..

Does more so when using a hub and two Pcs in the same house ..

If you haven't already, try going into "Device Manager" and uninstaling the NIC. Then reboot and let Windows find the driver on it's own....
I've had this problem before on alot of boards and that usually fixes it.

If it doesn't, try powering down the Hub/Modem let them both sit down for around 30 seconds then power on the Modem first, let it settle down and sync, then power on the hub and try again.
Personally, I've never had an onboard NIC go bad (not saying it couldn't happen) but I'd try these steps before tearing my rig apart for RMA.... ;)

The MA790XT-UD4P seems to respond really well to this technique. :D

Maybe I just have a Golden 550, but this helped me tune it... :yepp:

I've had this problem before on alot of boards and that usually fixes it.

If it doesn't, try powering down the Hub/Modem let them both sit down for around 30 seconds then power on the Modem first, let it settle down and sync, then power on the hub and try again.
Personally, I've never had an onboard NIC go bad (not saying it couldn't happen) but I'd try these steps before tearing my rig apart for RMA.... ;)

Ive tried unplugging it and inserting it many times. The nic doesnt even show up in the device manager any more.. Tried on both Xp and vista:down: First time for me to that this happens. I think it happend after i inserted my 4890 :shrug:

Ive also removed the cable and used it in my laptop without any problems so its not anhything with the cable o router

I had issues too and I fixed mine. Make sure if running one Video card that it's in the one marked pci-e 100. I switched mine to that 100 slot and lan has worked fine ever since. I fought it for a week thinking it was something else and was less than an hour from RMA before I discovered this in the manual.

Im using te slot closest to the cpu. Is that right or? Ive been runningit like this for 1month, and yesterday the nic dissapeared

Nope, wrong one. My lan worked "sometimes" when my vid vard was in that slot, but works 99% of the time in the lower slot. It's worth a try anyway.

What? :S But the lower one is x8 isnt it? :S And you say is in the manual?

It doesn't say put in that slot but my manual shows one x16 pci-e 100 slot and the manual said nothing about the other slot. I had mine in the one closest to the cpu and had Lan issues, I moved the card to the lower slot and it fixed my issue.

Hey, thanks for the tip, I'm still tweaking acc, but I did go from 3696 to 3796 using different ACC options.

Snowman, if you haven't already, go to the NIC device properties and uncheck the box that allows windows to turn that device off to save power. Worked for my MA790X-UD4P as well as others'.

Well the problem is that it wont even find the nic. Its not even visible in the device manager :/

Is it me only, or does anyone else notice that the BIOS version F5 for XT mobos doesn't seem as stable with tighter memory timings?

I had a non-functioning LAN problem before. It working normally but then *poof* it stopped working. No signs of a NIC anywhere in Windows or even Smart LAN in BIOS. I got this reply from Gigabyte awhile back:

got my 790xt yesterday and my first impressions havent been the best tbh. first of all im using a phenomII 700e x3 energy efficiant with a really low VID obviously.( just having a play around with it till i can find a decent quad.) i had it on my old ma-770-ds3 rev2 and it was rock solid stable at 3.4ghz with 1.35 volts but its not the same story on this new board, i can only seem to get 3.33 with 1.4 stable (anything over 1.4 vcore this chip does not like) i havent managed to get an unlock with this F5 bios has anyone? and are the motherboard tempretures ussualy over 50C when stressed? the heatsink is very hot to the touch. ive only just got this board so im going to have a proper play around soon and see what it can really do nb, ht and ram wise

Something has been bugging me a lot recently about this mobo...my apologies if this has already been covered =(

First things first - I use a ps/2 keyboard. Not a USB.

Ok so here's the deal - I notice that my NumLock light stays on when I shutdown the computer using Windows 7 RC.

I have tested with XP, and the NumLock light on my keyboard turns off fine when I shutdown the box. I have also tested with several Linux distro's and the NumLock light also turns off properly when I shutdown the box. I don't have a copy of vista so I can't test with that.

Searching on the web yields pretty much nothing. It seems most everyone has a USB keyboard these days. Does anyone out there still use PS/2 keyboards? And if so, are you using Windows 7? Does your NumLock light stay on when you shut the computer off from Windows 7?

there may be an option in the power management section of the bios but its perfectly normal, all my pc's have the numlock and mouse lights on all the time, if it bugs you the easy solution is to turn it off at the psu. have a route around in the bios if you feel the need

I'm still having problems when the system restarts. Once in a while does the machine die when restarting (never from a cold start). Nothing happens when pressing the power button and I'm forced to clear the bios settings. An old power button hanging out of the case from the rear is saving me a a lot of time. The machine could die on high settings as well as low settings - what's going on? For some resaon does the 1,9 volt mem setting not work at all.

Hi all, have a question regarding bios stability/overclockability, have bios F5 on ma790XT-UD4P w 720BE and cannot stabilise the cpu at anything above 3250 without passing 1.45V on CPU core, have increased NBvid/SB and pretty much tried everything with no success. Am coming to the conclusion that my CPU batch 0906B is to blame for not beeing able to OC it. Right now I am @ FSB overclock 230(default voltage) as this oc's the memory as well bringing it up to 1520@7-7-7-24-1T (Memtest stable, Prime stable). The other option I have is to up the multi to x16(default voltage) and set the memory 1333@6-6-6-20-1T but this disables C&Q.
Memory is OCZ platinum 1600@1.9V. The thing that frustrates me is that the cpu does not seem to scale very well with the voltage increase; there is that wall ~3200 that cannot be passed simply by providing a tad more volts to the Cpu and the components.
Any ideas welcome and keep this thread alive ....

I am planning to buy this mobo. Have all the problems been solved, or should I opt for something else?

I got a strange problem with MA790XT-UD4P and my MS Sidewinder X6 keyboard. It works nice until I enter BIOS (F4) when it stops working. :( I need to plug my good old PS2 keyboard to setup BIOS)
I used X6 (to setup BIOS) before without problems on 2 different motherboards (ASUS M3A32-MVP...) so I don't know what can cause this issue on MA790XT-UD4P.

Well cause I'm already posting here I would like to add that this mobo is a nice overclocker too despite that strange keyboard issue. :)

I have the same 'issue' with my 790X UD3P and my MS Natural 4000. The keyboard only seems to work on one of the two USB ports closest to the PS/2 port. Looking at the back I have to use the top-right USB port for the keyboard.

Thank you for the tip Dennet, I'll try to plug it in one of the USB ports just below PS2 ports. :)

Haven't had much time to test it at all.

Tried to flash F8 without sucess - error when checking file in update utility...
Tried several times to download it, changed usb-mem and went to GB site again. F7 and F8 removed now.
Flashing F6 now.

edit: mem volt problems still there - boot problems with voltage above 1,85v.

I just got this board, and have a weird issue with it. I tried installing win7 ultimate x64 on my x25-m with ahci enabled in the bios, and everytime, no matter what sata port I plug the ssd into, the installer tells me it cannot install to the drive and gives me an error 0x8030024. Tried googling that error but didnt find anything. I was only able to get it installed by setting it to IDE, then i reenabled ahci on the drive. Anyone know whats going on?

I'm on F8 right now. It hasn't given me any problems so far, all my previous settings for my bios work fine. I'll play around with the voltages and see if there's any major bugs. Right now, the best thing IMO that they fixed is that the northbridge actually shows the voltage in BIOS beside the place to change it, not what it did before.

Didn't change anything for me, going from F4I to F6. Max stable clocks unchanged. Not surprising, really, I didn't have any complaints about F4I.

The only notable difference F6 made is that now I am able to run my OCZ 1600 mem @1600 7-7-7 1T stable. Was trying to achieve higher clocks but it does not seems possible; my 720 seems to hit a wall at 3.2 (default voltage) to pass this "wall" I have to go at 1.4V to reach 3.4, and with 1.45 I can reach 3.6 (tried everything with no success). My goal was to reach as high as I could without pushing the voltages too high. Hence my 24/7 overclock is 3.2 only by multi (16x) and using phenommsrtweaker to cool it down.

Was on F4 now running F6 no problems for me. Cpu seems to run a tad cooler. :)

I have not tried installing win7 x64 and vista x64 on my x25-m hdd, newly formatted, and set to active with diskpart, and I CANNOT install either when it is set to AHCI. I have tried loading drivers first from a usb drive, and still no go. Vista told me "windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation" and vista gave me some error code. As soon as I got and set the bios to IDE I can install to the drive no problem. Anyone have any idea whats going on?

Also, when i connect my external hard drive through esata windows will not recognize it until i reboot the computer, this happens weather the sata ports are set to ahci or ide. Any idea?

What Fan Controller program are you guys using? Cause in AMD Overdrive its only showing the cpu fan and once in awhile another fan will pop up.

Hello peoples, I'm quite curious, I have an MA790X-UD4 running with a 940BE.
I've had two kits of ram, OCZ Platinum PC8500 2x2gb, and OCZ Reaper HPC 2x2gb.
On both kits whenever i tried to set the ram voltage on 2.2 or higher it won't even post.
Nothing nada, I've set EPP to off, everything on manual, and it just won't boot on 2.2v or higher.
Even when I'm running stock, I only change the ram voltage to 2.2v, it still won't post.
I've tried bios versions f1 till f6, does anybody know a solution to this problem?

Careful with those voltages, my DS4 was overvolting (1.975V Bios set -> 2.06V DMM Measured). Some ram don't like high voltages also. Try lowering to the voltage that the ram kit's are spec'd.

Hey Folks,

I was trying to push my NB/IMC the other night and managed to get my main rig to a point where it won't even post... :(

I've tried all the usuall tricks, pull power cord/remove battery, all while resetting CMOS. I even removed all power (including Batt) and put a jumper on CMOS while I went to work,
No Luck....

Is there a way to FORCE the board to use the backup BIOS?

It always ran fine with the IMC @ 2700-2800 with 1.325v's. I was trying to get 2900 @ 1.375, seemed reasonable at the time. :rolleyes:

Hopefully I didn't POP anything, that 550 was a sweet chip!!

The gear in my sig is the machine I'm talking about....

FWIW, I figured out my problem, and all my gear is OK... :)

I tore the whole thing apart, changed CPUs, Video Cards, PSU's and switched from Water to Air, only to find out that my monitor somehow switched to Anolog input :wth:.....

Really weird problem, and I have NO idea how that happened!

Oh well, I really needed to clean up the Main Rig anyway...
Now I have a worthy project for this weekend. :D

The manual says .1v increments for the CPU_NB and RAM...my OCZ DDR2-1150 runs at 1.8v 5-5-5-15 but I would like to run between 1.8v and 1.9v and not just jump to 1.9v. :P It's probably a misprint, but I'd like to know before it's too late. I'd also like to run no more than 1.35v -ish on the NB, I'm not going to run 1.4v 24/7. Thanks.

When you set the System Voltage Control to Manual you can increase the DDR2 Voltage by .1v increments up to +.6v. From the image you can see the auto voltage was 1.8v so it could go up to 2.4v.

I don't know what the auto voltage is for northbridge but it can go up +.1 to +.3 volts. It's the same for the southbridge.

Alright, thanks. I'm fine with the northbridge incriments, just the .1v memory increments bothers me a bit. My memory is rated at 1.8v and 1.9v will damage them so I wished there was something in between. Oh well.

Beta BIOS F9A for the 790X-UD4P and F7B for the 790XT-UD4P have been posted on the Gigabyte site.

Seems that it adds a "CPU Core Control" option. I'm assuming this means you can now choose which cores you want to use on your multi-core chip similar to the ASUS boards. I'm not sure though as I haven't checked myself yet. Just thought I'd let you guys know.
